From the headquarters of Ramsey solutions Bob guessing from a Dollar Car Rental studios Epstein Dave Ramsey Show that is cash is king of a dog park which has taken the place of the b.m.w. As the status something of shoulders I'm Dave Ramsey your host thank you for joining us America open phones at AAA 825-5225 that's AAA 825-5225 Joshua is starting off this hour in Virginia Joshua how are you I'm great how you doing man better than I deserve. Well Ok so. My girlfriend is moving in with me so and we haven't been dating super long so we're not ready to get married if. That's how you prefer to do the finance I would we do a budget together we have separate accounts. I'm 28 and she is 22. What you would want your daughter to do. I'm not entirely sure we thought a lot about it and it seems like the right decision. Well if you're going to go forward with it. Which I would advise against that there's all kinds of data points and statistical evidence that indicates it's not good for your future marriage. Although it seems logical that you know you would try on a pair of shoes for your bottom but this is not a pair of shoes as a wife and so are maybe I mean I've been dating that long but anyway so that would be against my advice in general but if you're going to do this you need to keep everything completely separate This is a roommate This is not a wife and I don't like and don't do don't make decisions financially based on anything together that is passed tomorrow I mean maybe you know a meal or something is fine or you can you can split the mustard or whatever I don't care and that's in the drawer the refrigerator but. But but for goodness sakes don't be buying houses together cars together don't be loaning her money giving her money or vice versa any of that kind of stuff because number want to screw up the relationship but number 2 it will screw up the relationship and then number 3 when everything goes split some day and it likely will based on what you're telling me then you're going to have this all this money problems tied into the heartbreak of the end of the romance and so it's a roommate. If it was your college buddy movie man and there was no sex involved. And you were just you just split the expenses and you run the finances exactly the same way Carrie is on the line in Tennessee hi Carrie how are you no good how are you there is better than I deserve what's up. Well my question is my husband and I had a loose bad struggle with trying to get I want to court combines on them because we've been there for 5 years counseling for the part of school or. House counseling are close. It's actually Ok. You know how liberal you feel Strobel What were you working on. Everything motional financial. You know a lobbyist very clear. All right well I hope you're making progress on some of those things there's not no shame in getting some coaching getting some counseling on how to do life because none of these kids don't come with a handbook and marriages don't either and sometimes if you didn't come from a background where there was something healthy it's hard to know what today you know you don't know what you know how to act with your kids what your parents did not may or may not have been a good model for different people right so you know if you're making progress on all those things then you're probably making progress on the money piece as well then if you're not making progress on the other things you're probably not making progress on the money piece that makes sense. You know that if you learn to work together on parenting you learn to work together on treating each other with respect and kindness compassion and forgiveness and you learn to work together and do relationships right then the money piece Kafala is that it seldom precedes it if you've got all these other things that are broken you know just learning to work together on the money it might open the door to learning the other things that be neat sometimes that happens but if the money thing is not the main problem. Sometimes it helps with the other stuff but it usually follows the other stuff getting healed and sought encourage you to lean in with that counselor and just say hey we really want to end with your husband and say we really want to make progress on the overall relationship and I think you'll see the money come together at that point the good news about money using money as a part of your marriage healing and counseling for that matter is that Jesus said your treasures where your heart is so where you spend your money says what you value and if you come into agreement on your spending where the money's going to go every month doing a budget together you're really agreeing on you're getting a unity a one on what we value and if we value getting out of debt or we value getting a different car or we value going on vacation or we value money in savings for an emergency or we value getting our nails done whatever it is you value your money flows towards it and so when you are in agreement on those things because you're trying to make your budget work it makes you discuss all the other areas in your life too and it can have a real positive be a real positive part of a marriage being healed so I really encourage you to continue to work on that and that's very very cool that you guys are doing that Congratulations. Well one thing about our company at Ramsey solutions as our team members do work that helps people change their lives these are real people with real problems and our real people here care about your real problems our team sharp they're excellent they care deeply about our mission and we're hiring about $250.00 people in the coming 12 months and so you know we're looking for like experienced web designers creative directors us designers because we're doing some home delivery of this transformational content digitally. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. I got a call the other day and I thought it was worth talking about again it was from a wife looking for a life insurance for her family she asked why only recommend term life insurance instead of cash value plans like whole life I usually explain how you overpay for coverage on a horrible rate of interest and don't get your cash value when you die but this time I just had to go straight to Zander dot com and get a rate and then we compare that rate to the whole life plan. And she immediately saw the huge savings she realized all the things she could do with that money like paying down debt investing in a smarter way that made it real for her it makes no sense to buy or keep a cash value plan when there are smarter less expensive ways to protect your family that's why I suggest that everyone go to Sander dot com or call them at 803564282 get a free quote that's Zander dot com or 803564282 listen if it's time to select your benefits from your employer for next year take it seriously choosing a health savings account is the perfect way to manage the high cost of health care and you can use it like a 2nd for a one k. I say I'm good how are you better than I deserve what so. It's Ok by. A single mom single income I'm a homeowner I bought my house 2 years ago a little over 2 years ago Currently I owe one can. I call to my lender about maybe just lowering my interest rate and she let me know that after you know gone over numbers that it will look you know good if I did a conventional loan if I refinanced into a conventional loan I will be able to take some cash out she told me if I take out $30000.00 and just get the response I that my mortgage what they what it is or even go maybe $20.00 to $30.00 with that $30000.00 I plan on paying off my credit card debt which honestly I have been kind a living off of to maintain and that will free me up about 250 to $300.00 a month if I take the $30000.00 out pay $10000.00 of my credit card debt off and then do of course some home improvement with the remainder if I take out the whole 30. 40 Mikey or. What do you make a year I may I'm sorry I make about $35000.00 a year Ok And so you're not able to maintain your bills on the $35000.00 no not when it comes to emergencies I'm able to take care of my bills but there's no room for savings. And what is your house payment. I currently pay $740.00 for the only debt you have a credit card credit card I have a lease on my vehicle I pay $344.00 a month for it you know. But outside of that I'm happy to think like that Ok so here's the thing what you have mathematically now is not sustainable when you finish with this refinance what you have mathematically then is not sustainable you're going in the hole now and nothing's going to change after the refinance except a credit card that you don't have the payment on it but you've not been making it and you've been going into debt so we're not fixing your problem by doing this you're moving some stuff around you're not getting out of debt you're just move your refinancing the debt you're moving your overspending and the fact that you're not meeting your bills over on your mortgage you know when you go into next time that after this runs up. Yeah I don't know maybe that's not this is not a plan so your mortgage lender doesn't give a crap about you all they want is loan you money and that's their only goal so what is your current interest rate. I'm Or. Well. When you might save one percent on this which will save you a $1000.00 a year no I would not refinance I would sell your car and I would start looking for some extra work and I would look to see what else I can sell you a car you definitely can't afford that's what's killing you in this equation and you've got to get your you got to get your budget balanced by getting the credit card debt paid off and get rid of the car payment and that'll get your budget balanced and the interest rate on your mortgage is not really I mean you can save a little bit by refinancing but that's not really going to solve your overall problem you've got a cash flow problem we've got to get your income up short term buy some extra work and get your and go up long term by possible career changes or job changes so that we say Ok what do we got to do they were making $70000.00 a year 5 years from now one of the steps we've got to do that and that's overall work on your income side in the meantime this is a car that's completely on a line this car is killing you and then you know start when the that down if you about a $5000.00 car and pay cash for it or get it on a very small loan to get that paid off and get the credit card debt paid off by working extra and having a garage sale and beat beat beat beat beat on this and then when you don't have a car payment you know I mean credit cards now you've got a little bit of wiggle room in your budget plus your income is coming up this time with extra work and possible new career directions so here's we're going to we're going to help you with the whole thing. I'm not going to tell you what to do I'm going to walk with you while you do it because you're scared you're single mom the other trying to figure this out by yourself you're starving to death 135000 bucks I might help you I want you to go through Financial Peace University and I'm going to pay for it it's a one year membership and part of the membership is you go to the 9 week class called Financial Peace University and you get on every dollar budget which is tied to your bank and opens up everything and allows you to connect to your bank and get everything done and on top of the Financial Peace University in the us and you can Coleman's book on careers which is the proximity principle so you read the book and you get in Financial Peace University read the proximity principle book you get in Financial Peace University will help you walk through this get the car so get the credit cards paid off get the income up and then maybe someday if interest rates come down a little more which I doubt they will but if they do then maybe you look at refinancing but the benefit of you refinancing right now is interest rate wise is not enough to fool with it on your loan amount size and your lender was not doing you any favors they were getting rid of say they were saying stick your neck in this noose and we're going to tighten it for you that's what they were saying let's get you further in debt and not solve the cash flow problem that you have own you can even do some home repairs Isn't that glorious see how it sounds so wonderful until next Friday when all the payments are due and you didn't change your situation at all you're still in a freaking mess and that's what you got to avoid so I Thanks for the call Jonathan is with us in Texas hi Jonathan how are you Oh I'm great how you answer better than I deserve sorry what's up so during the spring during April my father. Back to the Iraq and he did not have the money and he didn't do. Thing where he takes me out of the paycheck however that works and so I've been working since I was 13 and he knew that I had a bunch of money in the bank so he went to me it was like Hey. You know can I borrow this if I borrow from hire as is going to be a bunch of interest but you know he convinced me and he said he'd pay me back but a $1000.00 a month to get back to about 6 months and I haven't seen a single penny of it stands. You know how real. Seventy's or how much money to draw on your father it's $1000.00. And so when you ask him why he isn't paying us agreed what does he say. That's what I want to ask you about there I wanted to know how to ask him that. I can find on this during the summer in June if you know he's working on ever you know getting getting it back to me and he said like half and Mark and I did my best do you live in a very high horses and I do yes. And you're on a senior in high school junior high school so what are your plans in Miami for every right to assume after you graduate way out of your life I plan on going to community college and then hopefully get a science degree and then living there while you're doing that yesterday. The reason I ask is the harder you push on this the more uncomfortable it's going to be to live there. So would you recommend I'm not a fan of your dad. Who borrows money from the 17 year old and then doesn't pay it back as agreed in his answer when asked about his life happens so I'm not a fan of that son but I don't know exactly how to tell you how to confront the guy when you live under his roof. I don't think you're really in much of a position to do that. So I think you just gently say dad you know that this is scaring me this is a lot of money to me and we really need to work this out because I need this money to go to college next fall and just keep asking that way and see if you can work this out. Getting you out of the business of paying tails This is Dave Ramsey again thirteen's in j.f.k. . Well for those with us in Arizona hi Cliff welcome to that I Ramsey Show. Thank you for taking my call my pleasure I don't know us you know I'm assuming partner People are 10 month old son take care of them all by myself make a lot of changes let me. I'm financially set for life and what I'm doing is I'm I'm thinking they were promised power going to 1500 a week and just put money into a savings account my son so that when he's ready now. It's 121 he can go in there and her you know her up by natural cushion to my questions and smart thing to do or should I invest in C.D.'s for him now and it's not keep but I'm not or you know I'm sort of in across won't say how old is he. Well I'm not he just turned 10 months 2 days ago Ok and so is a month in snow to go along that is when we have 20 years to invest in an account for him to have a financial pad right Ok what about college. I've got a college account set up to one put in the same amount $201500.00 a week and drink Yes So you're setting the $100000.00 a year aside for this kid yes I think this morning age so well you know that means you know that for 20 years this is going to be millions and millions of dollars. He's going to have when he's 21 years ago. What is he being 35 years old I may not be around you know. A super long time after he turns one thing isn't it so what happens to your state when he when you pass away if he's still a minor. They're going to trust another family member until he turns 21 to be yours and you're just called the sole heir Yes Ok well I don't think you have to put all this money in his name it's fine leave it in your name and if you want to give him some money when he turns 21 if you're still around that's easy I would make sure I challenged fund is funded and if you want to put some in but you're Jack in this where there are an incredible amount of money what is your income. Well I'm I'm I'm retired now I I got hit by a DUI attorney who was intoxicated so we sold out for a nice big 1000000 you know millions and millions of dollars So how many millions of dollars do you have. That close to 115 Now 115000000. Whole league Rolly What is that invested in. I went to 10 years ago I bought a 225 acre ranch north of Black Canyon City and I've got horses and stuff on the property just like I said there are a lot of. Community Services for we have for children and adults for the horses so the money all the whole $100.00 millions vested in the ranch I don't know Ok so well $100000000.00 invested in nothing it's just sitting it's sitting there. Even as I was right I wasn't run to believe in investing in stocks because well I'm selling invest in stocks that are making money off my money a chance I lose it all. Credit cards I got my credit cards a long time ago when I 1st started to show my credit cards well paid. Them got caught up. I'm not in debt to anybody don't want to be in that tiny body and so if you get even 10 percent on $100000000.00 a year that would be $10000000.00 a year and instead you're making less than a 1000000 on your $100000000.00 so you're losing about $9000000.00 a year by not having this money invested in the something conservative and was not higher I don't want to put you in high risk I lost everything I own that I don't I don't believe in high risk stuff but a good mutual fund that has a 60 or 70 or 50 year track record that does go up and down and there's no guarantee on it but right now you have guaranteed 1000000 I'll take a possible 10000000. Over a guaranteed 1000000 every time when the possibility is based on a 60 year or 50 year track record you bought the ranch and you weren't scared to buy it and there's no guarantee with it you know there's no guarantee right I mean right and so that's the point I think you're I think you need to do some get some advice not to turn your money over to someone blindly but to start learning about investing gradually over the next few years and you need to start moving some of this money into some real estate that makes money and maybe if you like real estate and maybe some of this money in the mutual funds that's what my money Zan and both of those things and I have a net worth far exceeding $100000000.00 So the one building I'm sitting in there were $70000000.00 and so on and it's paid for so we know I have more than that right and so the but the that's the process that you've got but it's just a matter the reason I'm comfortable with all of those things is because I've learned about them not because I blindly trusted some guy on the radio or some guy with a nice suit in an office who had sounded slick So I think you need to probably know you need to learn more about investing get a comfort level and gradually over time I mean take 5000000 of the 100000000 and invest it see how it does and fool with that for 4 or 5 years and then invest some more and invest some more if it works and buy a few pieces of real estate here or there that are creating income not just the ranch and all of that and then in the process of that in terms of taking care of your child all of that is going to take care your child if you pass away because it's all going to be invested and it's all going to be there to take care of them in that trust and you don't have to set aside. $100000.00 a year for the kid. Because if they are and you've got the money and if you need if you're alive you can simply give them some money if you want to send them social tool or if you want to get them set up and certainly if you die then it's being left to them anyway so. No I would not be setting aside $100000.00 in a savings account for a 10 month old I would be investing some for college and I would be investing all the rest of it for you as long as you live and for him in the state by learning a little bit more if you want to learn just go to smart Vester quick smart restaurant Dave Ramsey dot com one of the most at the click you decide so I'm talking when I'm if you feel like you know you know you're being misled or you feel slimy get out of there but I think you'll find someone this kind in common wise with the heart of a teacher and that will show you as a beginning investor how to invest gradually and that's what you're looking for I Let's go to Miranda in Arizona hi Miranda Welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show I do you suppose you did speak with you your to let some I'm not being developed and about paying off debts the last 15 months of being offered 22000 in that time. I paid off all the credit card debt medical bills and I just got a little bit left to go on my husband didn't will. However I discovered some messages between him and his younger brothers. Of him saying Don't tell my wife about that credit card she doesn't know and then the brother asked if you could be on the cards and he could quote rock the miles for him and. Yeah I just don't really know what to say about it to them how old are you married to me I'm 25 and 26 you can marry for 5 and a half years are you in a good church I am yes is he. Well. I didn't go to church Yeah. Well I think what you just discovered is that your husband has been a lying to you regardless of what the subject he's lying about is that says we need marriage counseling because trust has been violated it's hard to trust anything he says when you know he's lying right. Now it's running through your head what else is he lying about isn't it. Now so I think you need to sit down telling me you learned this and that you're unbelievably upset and that we need to go to marriage counseling and I'm going to try to save our marriage to see a marriage counselor the pastors in a line that up if you don't want to go in that says what you think about me and our marriage but I'm going to go to a marriage counselor by myself with you because this is a lying is not Ok. Our scripture of the day Hebrews 12 to let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith before the joy set before him endured the cross warning it shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God Rene Brown said nothing has transformed my life more than realizing it's a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands good line I Cali is next up and Kelly is in Kansas hi Kelly how are you know trying to render your better than I deserve what's up. So I have a vehicle question I mean baby steps you and they're trying to do because I know in times like artists I think I have about $45000.00 in debt and I make about 65000 a year and I only. 9200 on my vehicle it's in a 2014 Twitter out 4 and I was just wondering I've been looking at early 2000 like Honda Accord been to the Camry's that I could probably buy with trash in about a month or 2 and I was wondering if I should sell my car it's worth about 5000 and buy a car with cash to help a woman a that or if I should just take it out and pay off the car that I have because that's a good question and the fact that you're willing to do that is a good indicator that you'll get out of debt so the rule of them I use is if your car or cars or vehicles of any kind all added up worth more than half your annual income if this is your only car and that's your income and it isn't so that doesn't violate that rule the 2nd rule is can you be debt free other than your house car and everything in 2 years or less and so 40000 is what we need to pay off in 2 years making 60 did understand that right yes I make $65.00 and I just got a 2nd job but I'm hoping to bring in an extra $9000.00 a year Ok And so how fast do you pay off $40000.00 if you keep the car and I'm estimating about 15 months yeah I'd keep the car. Do you like Ok I do like it I need but new tires on it and things like that yeah but besides that it's a great car but I was just wondering you know I could eliminate the 9000 dollars and got get there faster but yeah if you did I would get there faster but here's the thing Ok if you if you get there if you're going to have 40015 months then this car would be one 4th of that would be knocked off Ok just making sense so it's going to knock off about 4 months yeah and here's the thing what are you going to do after you're dead free 4 months early one of the 1st orders of business is going to be to save up and move back up in car right so I mean it's a 4 month difference on a 15 month schedule if you like the car I think you've made it I think you work your way through Ok that makes sense to me Yes yes it does I was just you know it was good not really you know if you got 40000 dollars for the debt and you had a $40000.00 car for more than half your annual income I'd sell it and shout of that but you know 2000 on that and we would get on the business of saving up and moving up to 10000 our car lighter right but but it's not it's not going to make your get out of that plan dance. So thank you so much that you might appreciate it thank you open phones at AAA to 552 to 5 ambers and Kentucky hi Amber how are you. There how are you better than I deserve what's up. Well. My husband just started your plan this last week we just find that for after you got your book Wow And I've been on my husband for the last year when you decide to do this with you maybe maybe not on and off all year and we went through one of your videos the 1st step and he was like 5 well we'll do it my hands up. Live in this way and through the last year we saved up a $1000.03 different times. And this morning my husband was married. And we have is a Ok yes yes yes all right across for not what I would say it's Dan it's in his work Ok but we're planning on finishing this $30000.00 with the next check now that came in you know why can't you and whether there's a car operational Yes and the other has got my story right see that's something that the other guy ran off I was a hit and run Yes Ok So I mean it could well the car run can you drive it to work yes don't worry about driving keep going so don't worry about. It In Your Car 5000 or about a dent your car oh yes you can point. Your car you'll fix it after you get out of the mess Ok You know here's what happens Ok And this is what's happened to you in the past and it's changed as of this last week when you guys made the decision together that we're not only going to get out of that we're going to go to Financial Peace University and we're going to learn how to handle money but what happened to me and this is happening to you too I can tell by the way you're telling the story it seems like when you're broke and you have no money everything that can go wrong will go wrong. It seems like when you're broken you have no money your whole freakin life looks like a country song you know and that's what this feels like right here and you know we finally get started and he gets hit in the back oh my gosh well thank goodness nobody's heard it's just a dentist who could go right but it just feels like we can't get ahead you know if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all you know. That's how it feels when you're broke Yeah and so you know what every time we get you know. Back Yeah exactly and so here's what happens the thing that breaks the back of that negative momentum is your commitment to a new life and the written budget with a plan. So now the written budget with a plan and your commitment to a new life says. This is this is really bad I have a dent in my car this is inconvenient it's not going to take me off track though because by God we're on a plan now I'm a mother dollars We're going to get out of debt and we're going on we're going to end up with $25000.00 an arm urgency fun and no debt and then when stuff like this happens we're just going to lie and get a cup of coffee and go get the car fixed. That's where you're going because you the way you break the back of it you know one step forward 2 steps back feeling because I know how you feel I've been right there I know exactly how they feel is frustrating is crap and it's depressing and all of that I get I get you understand but the thing that breaks the back of that is your resolve to change your life your commitment to a new plan and then get on that every dollar budget and you want him lay this out and go hey we're never going to be here again. Poor is a state of mind broke is I'm just passing through. And you've been poor but now you're just broke. Yeah you are getting out. And thank you you're about to change your family tree what your household income 37000 right both of you work and 40 I know he works and I'm a stay at home mom I think Sarah and I bank on the money scene and yeah well not anymore I bring home now anyway work on a plan and we're going get rich and he's you know look he's gone how old is he he is 42 What's he do for a living he's you know extension Ok so you need you know what's gonna start happening the more you all work on this he's go start think about how you make more money. Yeah where we're already Yeah you know what can we do can we say why are can we you know actually can't get well and can you do sod work or can't cannot get maybe I'm a need to be electricians somewhere else where they pay $60037.00 I don't know I don't know what the deal is but but he's going start thinking that way you're going start thinking that way we're going to start thinking that way this is changing you have the power to make these decisions I'm so proud you know you're going to do this and as you get into these messes and you're fight your way through you call me that's what I'm here for.
