And you're off to a bad start once again this season Chip Kelly My oh my how you have been a failure ever since leaving Oregon betterments quick question for you by the way Mike Leach who they will play coming up later tonight at $1030.00 to see l.a. At Washington State won an epic grant this week talking about mascots in the Pac 12 and who would win in a fight just judging off the mascots because we don't Washington state should be you see alive but mascot wise do you go with Joe Bruin u.c.l.a. Mascot or do you go with Butch t. Cougar who is the Washington State mascot see the thing about what cougar is he could look so much more intimidating I agree you know it almost looks like he's on a vacation Yeah like a. Palm Tree Yeah but it was a little bit like he once was like this big intimidating force and then he like when and did slim fast or something. I don't know if I'm taking Pac 12 mascots or a big fan of Sparky the devil. I don't like going to states mascot Yeah I do like Oregon duck although I don't think he's beating anyone in a fight but I just like him but I think I'll go with Butch Krueger Ok let's get to number 10. Percent for you have any opinion on that by the way mascot wars got to be honest I don't hear it herself always said so much of the program I just found out because I just googled the other mascots that I wasn't sure of that Arizona has a tandem. They have Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat so that might be like one of those Debbie Debbie we handicap match set ups where you think you're just taking on Wilbur and then add a no where Wilma comes in tact and just yeah brings the Heat have at the Stanford trade. A member of the jury once got into a fight at a basketball game that was the legendary stuff only a number 2 they know holder since team in Euston was very close to getting to overtime against 2 lane 1st and 10 for Tulane at the $29.00 at Tulane funny than it is they did a fake kneel down in the next play to Lane throws a $53.00 are touchdown to win the game 38 to 31 here is a very frustrated 1st year head coach it used in coming over from West Virginia and Dayna Holder said I'm looking at the stats from our earth. And they were better than them at every every statistical category. Obviously except for the score I've never seen an ending like that in my life I've been coaching for 25 years I've never seen and I thought we thought the last drive off sensibly in which you can talk about struggles all you want to we had $533.00 yards we snap the ball a lot are referred down percentage was 50 percent which is really good our punt team was really good we didn't punt that much didn't turn the ball over and we didn't want but. You can say we played bad that's fine you can you can you know you can say I coach bad that's fine you can say I didn't have any you have time adjustments that's fine you can say I didn't have a rate of ready to go that's fine too I don't care that's all good comes down to the end where we had a chance to score and when we didn't and then it is just completely unacceptable on every single level to let them go 70 yards and 14 seconds I don't want to say I've got to do a better job of getting our guys ready to play I will assume the responsibility. We have not having enough of the time to be able to finish this game but we have an opportunity to be able to. Carry more questions. Ok answer about 5 of them right there. Well that's one way to end the press conference they know use and used and I was talking to 2 lane player the other night a friend of mine and they said they were running their fake the old them fly since fall camp practice makes perfect next not Notre Dame at Georgia coming up later this evening at 8 pm herby smart very complementary talking about Notre Dame Well they they get multiple formations they attempt they've got the ability to do a lot of things that a lot all fans and when you start looking at all the things they do this is hard to prepare for all of it you know in a week and weeks time and then you throw in the fact they got to hit with a quarterback that he can make you write every play in the coach could you call back call the kid a barely mouth and go scramble for him called Perfect call he takes care of that so it's nice when you've got a guy that can make somebody miss and you know whether it's over pressure whether it's a 3 man rush whether it's a 4 man rush I mean he can make you right and that's the thing you've got to be patient because they they accumulate yards they've got a vertical passing game this explosive they've got good runners and they use their personnel Very well I really hope Notre Dame gives this a game he's usually when Notre Dame plays a big time opponent they fail to do so by advocates of last year and then also what we saw. A bunch of years ago when Notre Dame got the national championship game of . And they got smoked by Alabama I like Georgia in this one I'm just hoping that all this you know all these words of complimentary. Statements about this Notre Dame team by Kirby smart we actually see them play up to the level that Kirby smart is talking about but I don't have a lot of confidence in ordered and I hope it's a close one would be fun to watch. Prime time college football game between Notre Dame and Georgia go down to the wire it's not like Georgia in this one and when it shocked me they do so going away moving on now the top 25 match up all burn at Texas a and m. Jimbo Fisher very impressed by the freshman quarterback of all vote next you have to play they're going to do what they do as their core backbone x. Is an outstanding young man I know I know both for a long time again his father played for me and was one heck of a football player and now the way that is a competitor and as a football man with the best I've ever been associated with. For me he's a great coach and coach in college goes in high school so he'll have a lot of intangibles in his blood that you know some other freshman may not from just the experiences of being around those things so I mean it's obviously a tough test we have to prepare like you know no matter what who that's what they do with but he's an outstanding player he can be Chip you know he has a great army great legs and he's a very tough competitor and so again hopefully we can play well against him I know everyone is raving about Bowe next after their victory to open up the season again so are again however he was not that impressive in the game b. Sides that last throw late in the game to win it but they won the game. This game comes down to which quarterback turns over the football less in my opinion and I know you don't need a Ph d. In football for that analysis though next in Kalam on Mon I haven't been that greatly impressed by Stockton Tiva said his face of adversity Let's see what happens the rest of the way though he's encouraged by Callum on the end I'm quarterback and for next even is that all right this year but I need to see more I think it comes down to which quarterbacks more composed and which quarterback is able to take the reins not turn over the football and is able to go on a drive late in the given it is a close game to good coaches and I think it's coming down to the quarterback play and finally Michigan has not gone to Wisconsin and want to game since 2001 how about that Wisconsin off to a 2 a no start. Jonathan Taylor has 8 total touchdowns in those 2 games and for Michigan it's been sloppy down early to middle Tennessee had to win in overtime against Army Let's take a listen to Michigan's head football coach Jim Harbaugh about the difficult moments and the difficult times the Michigan program has had flying in Wisconsin playing camp Randall's a. Tough venue you know it's a tough tough one to get. We haven't had. More work than every one in 4 or 5 tries so. The game for us. And we'll see if Jim Harbaugh is going to show up in the big game ever Sconce in Penn State Iowa Notre Dame Michigan State and I was there on the schedule I know most circled Michigan State and then especially Ohio State every big game that he loses this year it's going to be the same old same old things improve the program back in coach Harbaugh when the big one. Should be a fun one coming up later today at noon Eastern Michigan trying to get their 1st victory in Wisconsin since few 1000 a month that's college football but back on c.b.s. Upset ng you top 10 to the country and then Boise State beating Air Force will start with Boise State beating Air Force Air Force they beat Colorado last week Colorado had the big win. Then they were disappointing up against Air Force Boise State though off to a 4 no start and people are thinking perfection for Boise State before our state 3631 beat Marshall 14 to 7 the Portland State blue now 45 to 10 and then Air Force they defeated on 30 to 98 and just a reminder Colorado beat the brassica and then Colorado lost the Air Force and Boise State takes care of 30 to 19 the rest of the way for Boise State top 25 team the country number 20 overall and maybe they will get that. It's going to be most likely between them and you c.f. For that non-power 5 spot the g 5 spot in the college football playoff unless there's some other team that is able to assert the dominance of the table maybe Boise State or you see have dropped one but you never know you have u.n.l. Day at u.n.l. The Hawaii at b.y.u. Should be a very good game show from Kalani said Takei a few moments ago on the show said it was a state university Wyoming University of New Mexico Utah State and Colorado State So definitely a path for perfection maybe for Boise State now they get to USA the talk with u.s.c. The last 2 months now and Swann is out he resigned it's all been clay Elton's not going to last fired. Eventually Urban Meyer will get the job and will come out of his retirement Urban Meyer was in the building last night at the Coliseum work in the game for Fox and us saying I had Yuta who led by Cal when I hammer enter in the game as the top 10 team in the country USA was already on their 2nd string quarterback they lose cadence woven and the next thing you know with the 3rd string quarterback they find the way independent of not having paid and saw this I couldn't love 6 years me and the game they find a way to win 30 to 23. Or 4 games this year us see the feat in Fresno State they beat up on David Stanford squad they lose b.y.u. In overtime and they bounce back by defeating a top 10 team and you tough I can root for Clay helps and because everyone's counting him out everyone's already trying to turn the page. And get to the future of possibly Urban Meyer and after every loss or every poor performance even if they win ugly it's going to be Urban Urban Urban and u.s.c. Could have a good year this year and it still might not be enough I'm really poem for us see him over a lot about that program the next 2 weeks at Washington currently a top 25 team Washington has b.y.u. Later today like you mentioned and then there at Notre Dame so too tough road games in Seattle Washington at Notre Dame coming up for us. And the Pac 12 you always know they beat up on each other that is such a classic Pac 12 game where u.s.c. Beats you to when you is a top 10 team and that's why we're not going to see a Pac 12 team in the college football playoff once again because when one team goes momentum the Pac 12 another team in the Pac 12 finds a way to get in their way. Last night a feel good story for play helps and with everybody counting him out every single person counting him out. Down are the laws j.t. Daniels for the year you're in your 3rd string quarterback nationally televised game on fs one Urban Meyer in the building along with Matt Weiner and Reggie Bush is there part of that fs one crew and you'd be the very good a very very good team and Cal winning him has been at you for a very long time and that is an impressive performance by Clay healthy he's going to go down swinging. Even if he punches extremely hard it may not be enough because you're going to get a new agey in there and whoever that new agey is is probably going to want to hire their own guy it's a good thing to see a guy like that get a victory and put the blame off just a little bit longer for us probably for the inevitable firing at the end of the season and talent Huntley's a pretty good quarterback and you're able to hold them to 210 yards and only a touchdown about USA Matt Fink coming into the game 21 of 3351 yards 3 touchdowns an interception and u.s.c. Wins the game and they were only able to get her teen total team rushing yards Michael Pittman Jr goes 10 receptions to $32.00 and a touchdown How about that for the u.s.c. Trojans 855-2124 c.b.s. Sports radio we'll spend some time right now with a national championship winning head coach formerly of Oklahoma and that's Bob Stoops he has a book out right now along with Gene was a housekeeper and it's titled No excuses the making of a head coach Bob Stoops Thanks for making a few minutes Congratulations on the book and how you've been doing great thank you good to be on here today but we appreciate you coming on so let's start off with your former team that you coach the sidelines on for many years and that is. Many things to attack how about the quarterback Jaylen hurts he's been unbelievable and it's so good to see him having success especially with some of the ups and downs some things that are out of his control that happened at Alabama it's good to see a kid like that get rewarded now in Oklahoma absolutely he's a great person going a great job at Oklahoma credibly. Meeting on the field and you know he's got great talent throws a great football great passer you know strong running the football So anyway you know he's got a great job it's got a great start to the season and I think it's all we can get better it's been amazing to see what Oklahoma has been able to do in the last 3 years winning the Heisman trophy with 2 quarterbacks and Baker Mayfield and then also Kyle or Mary Lincoln Riley takes over for you and now you may have a 3rd Heisman Trophy winner this year in jail and hurts another trip to the college football playoff I know you were very confident in Lincoln Riley taking over for you when you retired but is this success at all surprise you to the level that we've seen over the last 3 years. Not really hasn't you know I knew Lincoln was the right guy it's part of the reason I stepped away because I knew the right guy would continue to push the program forward and we would take a step back. You know Link non-elected to bright guy I knew that you know these you know what been with me I knew. You know the emails how to relate to the players say they play for him motivate some so he's got all the attributes. Well for you know to continue to have a great career and I think believe me will show it doesn't surprise me that when I left I knew had I had a very mature or experienced team that would be able to handle the transition and that was part of my thinking too. In fact I was in a team meeting and I said look guys this is all good there isn't anything wrong here you know because kids always worry they think there's such a matter. When I said look this is what my choice and I said Look I said all where you are the ones that women lose your. Look around all you guys are still here all your coaches are still here so I said you know the only thing I'll change is Coach Riley be the head coach I'm not there and that's so good this is what I want and once they realized it was fine and then I go through all this in the book they stand up give me a standing ovation start coming out of their seats and given me you know given the hugs and it was all good and so no I knew I knew like What 'd would continue to do great you know how this works with the success that Lincoln Riley has been going through the last few years the n.f.l. Will always come calling especially with the trend of young innovative on fence of mines you had situations where n.f.l. Jobs came calling also considered as you said in the book 2 times maybe going back to Florida and leaving Oklahoma I look at Oklahoma and for Lincoln Riley you have a job right now where you're king I think it's a great job for him right now I think it would be very tough to leave how difficult of a decision is that since you've gone through something similar and you elected to stay . Yeah you know 'd what I had great support from my president maybe they were the same people that hired me there with me for 18 years so I never had a good reason to leave and they were treated me so well they continue to push the program forward and we have a great fan base that's great so I think Lincoln realizes the same thing there on the grass isn't isn't always greener somewhere else or on the other side so at the end of the day you know when you've got something going so well continue to push it forward and that was my thinking I I guess have loyalty to the people who hired me a great fan base and then I never had a good reason to leave and so for that reason and fortunately my children grew up in one place you know they know one place as home and you know Lincoln smart that way to you know work you know he's done a great job Oklahoma's a great it's a great job you know so the bottom line is you know he's got he's not finished you know continuing to push forward and he'll continue to chase those championships and I think he's going to continue to do a great job there Bob Stoops is here with us on c.b.s. Sports Radio know it's use is the name of the book The Making of a head coach authored by Bob and of course Gene was a house key at that the about one of your former quarterbacks and Baker Mayfield he has the task and I know it's a team game but you know how much of an emphasis is placed on the coach and the quarterback he has the the task of trying to turn that Cleveland Browns organization around had a successful year one now we'll see what happens in year 2 you got to coach him what can you tell us about him that makes him the right guy to not only be a big time quarterback but be the face of the franchise that changes the attitude in Cleveland Well what you see he's a genuine. Genuine guy he's ultimate competitor tough hard nose guy a. Great leader great to. And he's what you want. He's your favorite guy and feeds your if he's part of your fan base and then usually when you're going against something you don't. That's Ok you don't care and that's how it should be you know the only people people really like when they go against your people usually you know so the end of the day he can't help it he's just a great leader and a great competitor and he's the guy you want on your team Why did you decide to join the Dallas running Gates as their head football coach in the x f l You know I believe. That there's a market for this kind of. March and April people want to watch more football there's a lot of great football players out there that are on the fringes of the n.f.l. You know you think the last 10 I've cut from every football team in the n.f.l. Those are good football players that need a platform to play. Dallas is relatively close to Oklahoma. So it's. Very manageable for my family and I believe in the leadership you know all of our luck they are commissioner was a very successful guy and of course our owner since McMahon all oh very accomplished. We've got great t.v. Contracts. National t.v. Game all Fox So anyway I just think it or so it's like well you know absent or at least how much is that decision that in 20172018 just had that edge to coach again and maybe you missed it more than you thought you would. Oh I miss it I know I would know it now or when I thought it would I knew it would be incredibly hard and I just didn't but you know at the end of the day it's just you know yeah maybe after 2 years not being on the sideline it just. You know I had a little too much time on my hands a little too much when I stepped away I said I wanted more time myself but they said you know the old adage be careful what you wish for you might just get it so I heard him want to fight through the famine of our affiliates they asked about the Auburn reports and I know you responded with saying it's ridiculous and you would never talk to anybody that has an existing head coach as there was a report that surfaced they could target you if you moved on from Gusmao Zhan So I want to ask you about that because I already heard your answer but since you're joining the access fell to me just as a college football fan n.f.l. Fan and this is nothing against the act of Bob Stoops is going to be on the sideline I would like to see him on a college football sideline So how do you approach the question of maybe returning to college one that. Well I don't know what are you going to do next year you don't know how big you know everyone. Don't know that you know who knows what the. Next year so at the end of the day everybody wants you to define your life and what you're going to do and you don't know what's coming or what your opportunities are so it's senseless to talk about it like I said there's no way I'd ever even enter. The. If they already had an existing head coach that's not happening that's too much respect for our profession and all these other coaches out there working and so on to ever be one of those guys that would do that so in the. You never know I don't know what I'll be doing here. At the end of the day I'm excited about the opportunities in front of me right now if you aren't a football coach What profession do you think you would have pursued be a coach. That's hard to do right I was if I wasn't in college football at maybe most school basketball I don't know I love my basketball teams through the years and my basketball coaches through the years I've always said when I retire when I have time here I'm going to I want to be a middle school 9th great basketball coach that's all over happens no excuses the book The Making of the head coach Bob Stoops and Gene was housekeeper Bob Stoops the national championship winning head coach is here with us on c.b.s. Sports radio let me ask you about 2 people that you respect greatly Steve Spurrier and then Mike Leach who in the book you said that was the greatest decision you made when you 1st got to Oklahoma to bring Mike on staff speak to me a little bit about the impact Steve Spurrier Mike Leach made on your coaching career Yeah 1st Spurrier you know everything I brought to Oklahoma I emulated from what we were doing at Florida you know I tried to copy all of that just our yearly schedule everything that we did. Coach Spurrier just just a great competitor and so anyway been a great mentor and friend to me still is. And then Mike Leach You know he was Kentucky was the hardest team I had to defend when I was at Florida and they didn't have the best personnel but they were the hardest artists to defend and I knew I couldn't hire how love me who was the head coach calling the plays and was the off chance you know he was calling the Often it's but Mike Leach was scored major. So I called Hal and said hey can Mike Leach do the same thing from a here at Oklahoma that your don't want to Kentucky he said Oh absolutely it be great and so I got to talking to Mike and hired Mike in sure enough you know that air raid off and she know even though how money you know is the originator of it all of course Mike was what them all those years that I will Leslie and on and on but you know Mike we kind of made it popular at Oklahoma and then they hired Mike at Texas Tech after one year with break after the $99.00 season and now it's everywhere you know so so anyway that was 'd a great hire and you know that that air raid office you know to this day continues to spread and anyhow it was it's always been really good for us since says a lot of reflection in this book when you look back at it what is the moment that you say that's my best coaching moment and then what was the toughest decision maybe you had to make in your long coaching career. There's so many probably one of my favorite. Teams was the 2006 team where we ended up losing to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl but we started the year. Dismissing our quarterback from the football team the day we were starting camp and had to move a receiver Paul Thompson back to quarterback to play quarterback and lose Adrian Peterson about 56 games into the season and we still and winning. The Big 12 Championship and Arrowhead Stadium dating are you know our big rival in the past so you know everyone goes to the Boise State game and sure I get one of the best games of Iverson sure but by the at the end of the day the main that whole year was one of our not many but our whole staffs coaching you know moments to dismiss your quarterback at the start of the year and then bring the receiver back to play quarterback when the Big 12 championship your arch rival you know it was great it was a it was a great year and even though the Boise game doesn't take away from it because heck that game wasn't a championship game the end of the day you know you end up 3rd or anything the country does it doesn't really matter you know so so anyhow that was that was one of our best. Coaching years I think with the whole staff and anyhow there's a lot of hard times you go through it just you know you know it's. It's a tough business I know you got it wrong because you got about a 1000 other interviews to do today so last one was Bob Stoops and real when you look at coaches they're able to point out Lincoln Riley in dabbas Sweeney and Nick Saban now in terms of under-rated coaches who are the coaches that really catch your eye and I know you have to be proud of your brother Mark at AK Kentucky because what he's doing right now is very special I can talk. Oh there's no question marks doing an awesome job at Kentucky you know every job different in the challenges you know and so that's why I think it's always difficult to rate coaches you know. So anyhow but yeah Mark's got a you know he's had a cup job of Kentucky that he's done and also job and they continue to grow and get better and other guy you know I've always respected. The way coaches Mark Antonio Michigan State has done and also John up through the years and for a long time you know anyhow. There's a lot of jobs out there that are tough but these guys do a great job with the men and how those are just a couple good luck on the book No Excuses the making of a head coach we appreciate the conversation thanks great to be with you today thank you we appreciate it Bob Stoops joining us right here on c.b.s. Sports radio it is the Zach really did enjoy that conversation and I said it when he would retire I'll say it again I don't think we've seen the last of him on a college football sideline if I don't want to touch that 2 years out now coaching our bull soon because he may accept fell a big time college football job becomes available to games they need to be looking for a new head football coach that's just my feeling the situation. For c.b.s. 852124027 at Zach yelled on Twitter. When we come back missed the big chests missed the big Don't Antonio Brown. Steelers out of not 2nd by raiders that now segued bye and then the Patriots are the latest to follow suit. We talk about a b. And is that f l future next on c.b.s. Sports radio. You know like you know about an current day and then you were to Wyoming in South Dakota state that felt like we needed. Producers that focus the physically on the range cow and held every other year and now ever since I can you know and it was Ok and so every other year and one of those extension program they so it was a 17 it was in Wyoming and we will be hosting it in. November 20th and it's on the flat and. I don't know the end I don't think we'll have it at that minute but you mentioned that the of any cheers hosted by the rules for universities jointly any sponsors of the event this year that you want to make mention of before we get into what this year's been all about there are a lot of songs there that that too. Has been quite a bit and we didn't have then there's. That attend this event and that's what really makes it a vamp to put a face because not only people can come and they can talk to that presentation and it is the presentation that let me go and then we circle. Might be from a producer who is incorporated something on their ranch that works for them but additionally we have a lot as we say have about $55.00 vendors that come in and come out to the van and set up a booth they're supposed kind of a one stop shop so they can time Piers vendors about Whitman. Medical cattle vaccine and of Audix pharmaceuticals I guess this is the thing they can talk to loan officers they can talk to the company. They can talk to a seaman representative either friends like Cyrus Navy or you put up there and so there's a lot of opportunity for pretty sure to to get some one on one conversation on products and services that they need as well as research based information or true information from a producer who is then what they've done on their ranch What is the theme of the 26 range. And what does that say about this year's top issues are not the same as moving science into practice and so we feel like there are some technologies that just have not made it on to the ranch quite to the degree that they probably could and we feel like maybe that our From a research point that we present a new technology that we don't always really talk about where and how it's an operation so we can open for health care the state going to kind of give a full opening talk about underutilized technology but some of the types of things that will bring in. The was going to come from I don't talk about if I'm free trade to choose can add to maybe like a black ink if they target as 3 complementarity so that we're not just saying well you should cross breed Well Ok but how what what are the goals that and what we could actually get you would. Though And we've we've maybe not done a good job of presenting the how behind some of the technology that people were going to have a talk on Ai ng and when it hey like how big a herd you have to have or should you do it yourself is a pay to have somebody can work for a commercial operation and it's just the pure bred that have their number head for work and things like that and we're going to have. It done now and Kelly Brown is going to come in and talk about there are a balance for taxes and how they kept that in the family the early 1900 in the changes they made in the business to keep the ranch in the family Stephanie Johnston is a ranch changes in Task Manager for the rest grazing coalition and she's got a staff there talk up and she can talk.
