We have no debt. Houses paid for great roughly. $700.00 or so. Our main retirement accounts. For one K. That $155.00. Our property is worth 2 in a quarter on the high side maybe. Only $700.00 plus $155.00 or $700.00 including $155.00 no plus $155.00 OK. So you've got a lot worth of over a 1000000 congratulations and thank you. We've worked hard at it we actually. Live this way before I ever found you're on the radio Sure sure yeah it was before you got into the local radio station I bought a HAD NO to be heckled and bought on time 0 percent financing and still $500.00 a month and I said never again or no and paid it off in 3 years it was like you know and then soon after that you have any other pension coming and. I do that. I will have a pension from my job besides the 41 K. How much roughly 62000. Right now I'm about 33 an hour probably about 70000 misplay overtime at a high we were making around 125 then my wife retired Flex had 3 years ago after 30 years of her job yeah she would still. Have a pension as well. Yes it's it comes in on a monthly stipend how much is that that's just under $800.00. And then I've got another pension that. If I wait until I'm 65. Start calling it will be roughly in the 4th if they. Are any of any of these pensions have the ability to do a lump sum rollover Yes I have my employer now I do I haven't checked the other one out it was. Work that automaker spent off and when they closed us they took over our pension and so I'm set up for their heirs what I heard you tell me you're making it now with your income at 70 something as a household since. You're not in the mathematically 30000 a liquid in cash if you take a pension if I make the pension your income would drop from 70 to 60 to. Easily with it's income no brainer you know can supplement that other $10000.00 out of the investment income off $850.00. Yeah you're in great shape you've got no issues at all none whatsoever that. My my wife a little bit nervous about it and also we have known and unknown fixed retirement from her folks when the time comes here's what. You need to do some simple math with her. $800000.00. If we take 5 percent off of that and it's earning a lot more than that because we're in mutual for this if we take 5 percent off of that that's $40000.00 a year that gives us a $30000.00 a year. 40 plus 60 your pension over what you make man. So young my 60. 000000. 00 and I thought you said they were paying you $60000.00 a year pension no I'm sorry that's that's a lump sum I'm sorry then we roll that over so now we're not of a 55 now we're at 90900000 at 10 percent is $90000.00 a year at. 8 percent is $81000.00 a year and so on right and so you just you to show her those numbers sit down with a smart tester pro and lay out a game plan to draw enough also draw enough off the income only. Of the 100002 live well. And you won't have to touch your nest day this is basically what a financial advisors told us we have a sit down and specifically gone over numbers with I have found in these situations that even though I'm the expert it helps my wife to hear someone else say it you know. I don't know what that is it's wrong but it is the other way. Roger thank you for calling and man congratulations or another every day millionaire very well done Porsches with us in Dallas Texas I Portia How are you hi how are you better than I deserve what's up OK Dave I have an issue I am a single mother by as added by your book and I love the book for the money make over I have said almost total and about $68000.00 I have credit card debt in about 555-501-5450 cars that I pay for about $523.00 a month and all about $20000.00 on it. I am meetings and find out how I can actually start this process I do have the $1000.00 saved good but I don't know if I should be saving money when I will have been no where right now we're going to work on the debt that's the 1st thing you do what we need folks to do is Baby Step one is a $1000.00 and then Baby Step 2 is we list all our debts smallest to largest we stop saving and we stop investing and we pile up and we only tear into that smallest debt and get rid of it you need to cut up your credit cards tonight all of them. Oh home what is your income. And why now my income of about 47 when you and I had a job making more but I was recently laid off for about 2 months so I picked up you know the nearest yard where I could get adequately back and gave me and I wonder how much child support the upcoming you know oh it's about 1000 hour a year a year. So we're dealing with a 60000 Dollar household income a car is a very expensive car and it's not it's not where you have to sell it but it's where you need to think about possibly selling and moving down in car OK a $500.00 car payment in your situation is a huge ouchy. Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch it's going to hold you back from home so has somebody got a high interest rate on it to the. Point the only had it was my 1st car and I didn't know anything about mine so how I'd love for you to get about a $5000.00 car for a little while while you get this mess cleaned up and get no payments just for a little while but you're going to have to pull back on some stuff and lay into this and then you can get the so that you can get this moving it will work for you hold on the center copy the book The Total Money Makeover to show you exactly how to do what when to do it this is the Dave Ramsey Show. On the recall and got our one composite of black and the bill is a lot higher I was around $28000.00 not more than what I had been in the past and while I wasn't in the past well last year I was the round pick 1000 and well what happened is they want to allow us to break down the class code. For the ground workers and if you know the tree climbers or what not you know we don't want we've run into that you have to change companies because the people you're dealing with are morons OK I don't you know I had these idiots come in here and start classifying our people as all kinds of high risk things and they're sitting in a freakin desk I mean they're just absolute moron sometimes and so we're yeah we had to break our stuff down by class and had to break it down by. Some of the executive classes because our highly compensated people have orders comp on them too and it's just it's all of our guys fly a desk for God's sake you know what that's ridiculous as well you're in the broadcast industry yeah sitting at a desk you know so I just but I just they're. Really bunch of bureaucrats is what amounts to well you know and so yeah I get your and you have an independent agent that is your agent. We do there's been going up about forest disputing it up but my question is as. Far as the funds go to paying it so we had about 10000 saved we needed 16 you know. You want to have been ready for that. Well right now we have 14 in our business account and then we have 16 in our personal savings so should we take what's in our emergency fund you know for a baby start 6 hour work and pay off the house that we just got that. I get from our emergency fund pay it off one month dominant Starbuck or. Put it on a payment plan yeah I mean you can put on a monthly plan there's nothing wrong with that and just keep up with it but I'm not accepting the 28000 OK if you change agents change agents but let's get somebody to grow a brain here OK They almost doubled it yet based on reclassification alone just not based on experience rating right now but your claims no not one at all never you know it's no experience rating whatsoever here they just came in and some idiot in a and a cubicle 500 miles away decide to reclassify your workers. To exactly what happened and it. Pretty much simply was I mean we ran into that about 5 years ago and I just ripped everybody a new but I mean I'm not you know that's just these people that don't think don't get to charge me money OK. It just pisses me off man business is too hard without stupid people get involved you know I'm saying yes sir so yeah I get you. Tell your agent to grow a backbone and straighten this out get you a new provider or get you a new agent one of the OK and then let's put the thing on a monthly and then you've got to start to assess are you charging anough for your product line your service to cover the cost of labor which includes In your case by workers' comp a trial because whether it's $16.00 or whether it's 18 or whether it's 14 still high worker's comp is what you're saying because you've got guys out there swing and. You know. Sharp objects around Right that's correct yeah so it's got you're going to have a charge a per charge is going to be high because there is a legitimate risk there but. There's no justification for that shift just that's just somebody that got out of control and time to smack a bureaucrat it's smack about regret they. Leave a ball bruises where the support Walton Beach welcome that I Ramsey Show Bruce what's up oh yes thank you Dave. I mean baby steps 7 my wife and I am we have a network of 1100000. Investing it won 54 so I've had. Investing is not my forte savings is so this is kind of the area I've been almost dreading but here I am so you got me and your 1400000 What's it invested in 1100000 I'm sorry 10 on well how much of that is in your 401 K. . 340000 OK We have 368000 in cash in the bank with the wife about to shoot me over because she wants to invest in something good for her. 225 pounds worth 250000 we can sell them to 25 net for that and then we bought a piece of property. In a resort area with 132 and it's not 175 now after a couple years so you have done some real estate investing your home in that property and you have done some investment everything already one K. Yes everything's paid you're more of an investor than you think you are except for that 300 cash that needs to be moved OK how can I help. You know we make about $175.00 a year and also what we're looking at now is we would like to build a home in a resort area but it's going to cost by the time we're done we'd have about $600000.00 in a home which is half of our net worth we would have to sell our current home and use a large portion of that cash and and then we would we would be in an area where we want to live and I just don't know if that's a smart thing to do to have so much in one house or should we just say Arad or buy another home for about the same in a different area and then this keep buying houses or invest in other in other areas the data that we have found them millionaires that are between one and 4000000 most of them have about a 3rd in their house and between between one and 4000000 and so if you go to 600 and you're at half which is about where you'll be I agree with you you make really good money you've still got a lot of years to earn that and so you know you you're going to have to the. If I did that I think you're kind of on the bubble I don't think it's if you tell me is 8800 I'd say no OK that's too much if you tell me is 400 I'd say it's a no brainer do it OK so you're caught on the bubble in all you're right there where it's good to be a little nervous but not anything to freak out about I would probably do it but the way Sharon and I would do it would be we would then in turn say OK now we got to really plow into some good mutual fund investing or some real estate of some kind to where your net worth shoots own past this and quickly this becomes a 3rd of our net worth OK let's get let's get in a yeah and if we have no debt so that's not really an issue yeah it's just a matter of it's a matter of diversification you're going to have a large chunk of who you are money wise and one thing is so resort area makes me a little nervous because that's volatile real estate what kind of resort area. Near the beach OK well again but it happens on the beach beach probably if it's based IF it is the value is based on the beach resort property is the 1st thing to go up when the economy's good in the 1st thing to go down when the economy is bad. So that the Beach Boys mountain houses for skiing beachfront condos like ours I got a lake house more like house when I often value when the market went down and my house in town dropped off hardly at all. Now and I like houses almost tripled since the and goes the economy came back right it always it's always make and you know not that I'm going to sell it I'm going to keep it but you know anything around water it seems are a mountain is going to give you a fit so that makes me a little more nervous here but if you still think you're paying cash you make good money you don't have any issue here but you might have to hold your breath if the economy shot down. You might see your value drop or if you have a $600000.00 house and. It might not drop at all and you might just have to kind of emotionally ride that thing down and ride it back up I don't think it'll kill you it's not a college Go Pro going to college among the wealthy so your college any of those things it just might take your breath away and you just kind of need to be ready for that brace yourself of the economy sure but it's a temporary thing it'll come right now like this is that over and she should. You deserve a C. Almost screen your debt free congratulations thank you so much if you paid off. $91032.19 love and how long did this take you. Months and your range of income during that time 132140 OK And what kind of debt was the 91000. Everything except the I'm smart enough to have student loans. We had a lawnmower 1st about 600 furniture for 6 credit cards about 4500 all our cell phones the mother 1400 the Harley Davidson that I had to have was 10 grand. A Cadillac 434000 I truck 441000 well over your vehicle poor home love vehicle I can tell me too but they were killing your this so how much or how many of those things did you sell. The Cadillac and the Harley OK all right and we cash flow out of the rest we did OK Wow How long have you 2 been married next month will be 25 years Wow So a quarter of a century and yet 14 or 12 months ago something big happened what happened. Well for me I was I see driving up the table in North Carolina PL or listening to one of your shows and you know I'm listening to these people who have a good income and have no money at the end of the month apple pie and that's us you know we're we're really good it finding an extra $300.00 and then finding something we can pay you $300.00 a month for that we had to have. This living paycheck to payment paycheck to payment that was exactly it Wow OK So Wendy John comes home and he spent too much time in the car apparently because he has these crazy ideas Right exactly. So what did you say oh it's kind of hesitant at 1st but once we got into the whole thing I . Got kind of excited. It was nice to be unable to instead of stressing about money and have all to use it really but he sold your car right he did that so much are. Helping my car he called me at work and told me to come pick him up because he had just. That's when I knew it was serious. Even talk about it John it is called My car why we had a brief conversation. After or before work or. How amazing so the radio show got you started did you do anything else or just listen on the radio show and go do the stuff. You know we listen to the show and listen to the podcast as well as travel on the Total Money Makeover Home audio version because just not a big reader and then probably 2 or 3 months and we went through it that you with the church show your local church was doing it good good very cool fun guys why did it go so 25 years have you ever been dead for a day and 25 years of marriage until now absolutely not I'll never even consider the possibility Wow And you did it in one year but I'm just like that if you do you went all in and I mean you got real serious and you went wide open most definitely So what do you tell people the key to getting out of debt is this is a very impressive story. For me I mean we talked about I think it was you know the budget I think is one we have never done a budget in our lives and I think it was looking at your money and you know giving each dollar a job to do I had no idea how much money we brought the end and just went away and have no idea where it went on or nothing to show for it. So when the on our You Tube channel they're showing the chart with the dollar amounts and how you guys paid off everything I did who did the chart. We all did the chart every time we paid something off our son colored then all right it was paid off and we all kind of chipped in on making that chart weren't so this was a family affair or and that's got to be this could be part of the way you get out of that is everybody's in oh you know we were all in you know we're joking around about him selling your car but but it was it was a game changer and you all made the decision and then he executed it at rapid speed rather. Instant we want to do anything our son would tell us he would like what would they say about that you know he got he got hard coordinate you know he didn't always. So 25 years and how does it feel now to have no humans and still very it is amazing and we are able to after 25 years have a nice anniversary trip and make a porn cast where we go on air over about oh nice day Dean good anniversary Oh yeah well you've lived like no one else announced on the live and give like no one else that's exactly what you should you know to celebrate this sign very very well done you guys very funny or very proud of you what do you tell people what was the hardest part of this for you guys. For me I think it was you know looking at the money we make and go on why can't I have this or that or whatever I mean obviously I love vehicles you know woodworking So I want to lose all the time guns all that stuff that I need and all that I've got to have it work and I have a Right now they are natural partners there really are need yeah yeah like hardly ever. And there's no other all of buying some once but when you buy them to the point that you can't breathe and it's it's no fun you make 140 grand and you're broke so I'm not anymore not anymore you want the Financial Peace University listen the podcast way to go you guys we're going to copy a Chris Hogans book for you retire inspired number one best selling book and of course that's the next chapter in your story we want you to be millionaires now you are on your way and be outrageously generous as you go along very very well done proud of you guys thank you John and Wendy Athens Georgia 91000 dollars paid off in 12 months my good $13140.00 countdown Let's hear a debt free scream. Really. Why why are you. Just legalese. Now what about what about their young son the colors in the blocks he challenges them what would Dave Ramsey do you think he has changed see there are several elements to changing your family tree some people think that if you just get enough money that it changes your family tree it won't because idiots can lose it in one generation and it'll run their life if they're idiots those are just well financed idiots then so you have to in order to change a generation to change your family tree in order to change the next generation you have to not only leave them money but also leave them the wisdom on where money comes from and how you control it and where it goes from here and making good decisions with money and placing a value on a dollar and you can do that if you're wealthy you don't have to spoil your children when you're wealthy and. Can promise you the REMS kids were not spoiled. They were not lacking but they were not spoiled you can ask them about the work ethic that was drilled into them. They're all man is a is a taskmaster because we're not going to raise kids don't want to work because you know what all else fails in a lot of work you can work your way through a whole lot of stuff that's the one skill you got a half you got a half and you can do it I know you can. Well done well. This is the Dave Ramsey Show. One question I get asked all the time is do I need life insurance listen the whole point of life insurance is to replace your income for someone who counts on you so if you have a spouse or you have kids yes you need term life insurance it's the only way to protect them until you're out of debt in a build up your wealth your only digging a deeper hole if you waste money on cash value plans since it robs you of the ability to make real progress and that's why I send you to Zander insurance and I have for 20 years that's where I get all my insurance and they only offer the plans I recommend it is not expensive it's not complicated and Zander will be there as your guide every step of the way visit Zander dot com or call 803564282 you need to get this taken care of I can give you the advice and I can tell you where to go but it's really up to you to take that important step to get your family protected that's Zander dot com or 803564282. The thought of my sons growing up without me inspired me to quit smoking I talked to my doctors and then I threw away all my cigarettes and asked trays and lighters I started exercising and sort of smoking staying away from alcohol when I was 1st quitting whisky I kept on trying learn something each time do whatever it takes no matter how many times it takes we did it. For free help called 1800 quit now a message from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and C.D.C. Let's face it weakens on the radio can sometimes be. Anything. But Saturday mornings on K F K are informational get a college education get a good job and you'll be successful all the way to retirement that's not necessarily true entertaining I think you get a sense of who you're playing against on that 1st or 2nd tee box and if they're taking a little bit too serious like in the Masters then might not trash talk too much but if it's your buddy. You know who the club. Packed with perhaps this will be interesting this year's They jump up to 5 a maybe they're going to do just as well as they did in 4 am in Lightning your son or daughter is 8 right now playing a 10 they're playing on the youth league game why can't they enjoy the experience well it's because the adults who have to win they've got to be we've got to be number one weekend radio doesn't have to be a waste of time for the street smart because in retirement show. And the sports psychology our only on 13. I play for. Awfully high school basketball for every level playing a pickup game on a playground because we. Possibly can. In theory remake I play high school basketball to put my hometown of Colorado on the map plan the state championship. Only one half of one percent of high schools play basketball in college football 100 percent of them. That's why playing basketball in their high school team is so important high school athletes learn life lessons that help them grow up lessons that can't be taught in the classroom and often aren't taught at home high school basketball because performing in front of a capacity crowd town sent this message presented by the Colorado high school activities Association and the Colorado athletic director says each. Patient in affliction faithful and prayer. Richard Branson said treat failure as a lesson on how not to approach achieving a goal and then use that learning to improve your chances of success when you try again Failure is only the end if you decide to stop. Josh is with us in Roanoke Virginia hi Josh welcome to the Dave Ramsey Show. Dave how are you better than I deserve what's up. I don't know if I just wonder which you know that I've been following your program now for the past few months and this one to fade I'm on a solid 2 and a half your plane is. Very And I'm very excited about it good for you. Basically my question it's a I've been trying to follow through more principles of the Bible not only just about why but also about money as well and also what you can teach and basically my question is how can I work on getting out of debt and also be generous and give back to others at the same time. Well it obviously they obviously both both pull at the same checkbook without a doubt and scripture breaks giving in for those of us that are Christians into 2 categories tithing which is a 10th of your income and all for tithes and offerings. There's not an instance that I've been able to find in scripture that an offering was given except from surplus meaning extra money after you've got yourself out of debt and you're building some wealth and that even includes the example the widow's mite we can discuss that another time to go through the legacy journey you'll see some different renderings on that scripture and look at it but anyway even if you set that in there if you said the widow's mite is one time then that's the only time in scripture that anybody gave. From anything except Sir plus other than the tide now every time the tide has mentioned a 10th of your income it's called 1st fruits which means off the top. The 1st fruits that come out of the harvest go to the Lord's house before you do anything else and so the baseline that I've used is this 1st and foremost God's not mad at you and the way he's your daddy your heavenly father he loves you he thinks you're awesome he thinks you're smart he's not going to be mad at you you're not going to wait to give you good things until you do exactly perfect according to him it's not all that freaked out OK so let's not get legal istic about performance based Christianity OK we're not going to do that so we're going to well we're going to walk in grace and in the light and with a lot of love and we're just everything's going to be OK and we're going to say so the tie that is a principle it is not a sin issue OK and people get that people get them confused they make them very very legalistic I don't I'm very diligent about it but I'm not legal istic about it so because I'm very sure that my dad who loves me put his arm around me and says Son the best way to live is with your money the 1st thing you do is you give 10 percent to your local church then here's some other stuff you do with money if you want to win with money but he's going to love me whether I do it or not you follow me. Totally OK so the tide is your baseline you start there no matter how broke you are 10 percent but I wouldn't give a dime more than that and I didn't I tie that though all the way into bankruptcy court all the way out and so I mean my whole Christian life ever since I got saved and met God and so I. I believe you give a 10th of your income and evangelicals have taught that for hundreds and hundreds of years but our grasp of the scripture is that. We give a 10th of our income to our local church because it's the New Testament representation of the Old Testament storehouse the storehouse took care of the widows and the orphans and fed the priests the Levites So the local churches job is to take care of the widows and orphans and pay the pastor that's their primary job so be it be active in the community taking care of single moms loving all widows and children and you know that kind of stuff and I mean if your church is doing that you're attending that church you trust that church that in that you shouldn't and there you don't trust them and you give them a 10th and then other giving I would wait to do until I got my self out of debt got my mergence refund in place and at that point when I'm doing baby steps $45.00 and $6.00 I would increase some of my generosity at that point and of course going to really increase it when you get to baby step 7 above 10 percent but I kind of break them into those 2 buckets. Not kind of I do not again you can do whatever you want but that's how I have interpreted scripture. Really that helps out tremendously I was really Pardon me you know really president but all that cool thank you for calling him and appreciate your listening open phones a triple 882552255 the way a lot of you that are listening are are not people of faith understand that that guy was asking me from that perspective from answering from that perspective if you're not used to a lot of apply the principle is the principle will still work for you the principle is give something 10 percent is not a bad guideline and give you know give 10 percent and then do your budget with the other 90 percent you'll make it you'll make it and something is activated in you when you're giving that says OK I'm not it's not all about me I'm not going to try to. Squeeze every penny until it's Graeme's I'm going to hold this with an open hand this is not all about some weirdness but you can't great your teeth enough and there's something that happens when you when you learn to give of that it moves you along the selfishness spectrum from selfish to less selfish and for those of us that are believers that's why God tells you do that he's trying to teach you a lesson not because you need your money you need your money if you want your money he take it no big reason spot where you're certain you don't need your money he's got money he's got OK So and if his church needed money he get it from somebody other than you don't worry about it that's not the problem the problem is he's trying to teach you how to win and how to be a better person and how to grow and in our case again people of faith be more like Christ more Christ like more like God and so become better grow in your spiritual walk and that's that's where giving comes in and that's why we say Live like no one else so later you can live and give of like no one else because giving is the most fun you will ever have with money by far nothing comes close not you can go out and have a 3 $100.00 dinner at a fine dining establishment with some of the world's best food and wine and you should I want you to get the point that you can do that but you can also have more fun than that with a $300.00 giving it away finding someone that you learn a little bit about their situation so you're not giving a drunk a drink we're not going to be an enabler but we find a situation and you know 3 you're been a situation where $3.00 a change your life I have been that broke up in that scared and you just catch somebody just as they're leaning over just as are about to fall over. And you have to throw in a bunch of changes everything it's that stands right back up it's so amazing and it's my friend Chris Brown says that generosity works like this if you do not position yourself for your intentions you cannot do your intentions you can intend to be helpful you can intend to be giving but when you get yourself in good shape financially than your position and for your intentions and you can be generous then and that's a that's a beautiful thing intending that a lot of people intend to do stuff but if you intend to send your wife flowers on your anniversary but you don't you don't get points for your intention you only get points if you sent the freakin flowers OK. Care what you intend to do or what your heart says or how you feel about something what you actually do is what you get points for right she she she not I know you meant to do that it's OK now that and how that works are the flowers actually need to hit the table because they've got to show up at the front door with the little man from the florist that's how that works in tension doesn't matter you got to do what I intended to do I care what you did. That's how you measure that So put yourself in a position to be outrageously generous and quit talking about it and quit talking about her by also being generous when you're not.
