Things and find out about the new book that he's got coming out New York Times best seller because of Brady versus Manning and if the Hall of Fame voter and again current author is new book How bout them Cowboys comes out on October 9th our buddy Gary Myers joins us here on c.b.s. Sports radio I Gary last time we talked to you gave me some insight on how bout them Cowboys It was a work in progress as how to finish up there I think it's been a strong community. And we'll see how the other cowboys start the season if they can strong but yeah I really like this book a lot is coming out like you said October 9th it's a really good look I think inside you know that your family empire and just. A look inside. Just a lot of different things in Cowboys history that I think I was able to give a new. Insight to different spend and I think whether people want the Cowboys or hate the cowboys like to like my book so I looked at it and there's a lot of each of those there are a lot of cowboy devil days and there are a lot of cowboy haters so I think you're playing to a pretty good audience I know that that was the whole idea yes I've impressed you this question for authors I just like asking the question in general genesis of the idea for the book because you have to decide to write it before you write it down as to be something do you think you can sink your teeth into what made you think a book about the Dallas Cowboys was something that you could garner enough good information on and put together a really nice dome that's a really good question and a lot of it had to do with the fact that I worked in Dallas for the Dallas Morning News for 8 years maybe want to $89.00 so obviously I'm extremely familiar with that period of time which was in the Tom Landry era and I've always enjoyed writing a lot about the Cowboys and I just felt there was something there that this is a team that hasn't won the Super Bowl or been even been in the Super Bowl more in 20 years now but it's still the most popular team in the world it's totally has the highest valuation almost $5000000000.00 of any team in the world so I really want to dig into why is that how does this franchise run with interaction and in the Jones family the last chapter I'll give you a little tease on this it's titled who's got next and I really explore what happens . On the day that is if Jerry Jones steps down or passes away and how what's going to happen to the franchise and he was pretty open talking about that was kind of weird rephrasing the question to him Jody. He was very honest and and forthcoming in talking about how he set the franchise for the future but. And one of my favorite chapters in the book also I I really get into the relationship between Tony Romo and Jason Witten that went far beyond the football field and it's kind of interesting to me that. 13 month period or 12 month period they leave football when they still have something left especially when and walk right in is a Number One analyst on their respective networks so I get into that whole relationship so I really think that's something for everybody in this book I take care of all the different eras of the cowboys and I think there's a lot of information and nobody's ever ready for very cool composed to reading it one last question on the Cowboys and I got to move it all again with yes sure. I don't know if you touchdown is Don't know if you research it don't know if it was during the time you could get that kind of access how close was Donald Trump to ever buying the Dallas Cowboys. I don't think that. It ever was because I mean I was in some people write that prior to Jerry Jones buying a cab Trump investigated it and was involved don't know if there was ever an actual offer out of a lot of conversation went but I've seen at least 2 were reported say that they've found out that Trump at least inquired about the Dallas Cowboys I can tell you this it would be talking about. And the city u.s.f.l. Sued the n.f.l. But it was really trump and there's not a chance in the world I'm Singh's 0 percent that the n.f.l. Owners were approved the sales of Donald Trump. 3 years after. He sued them for $1690000000.00 that if he had got his got his way and got that award it would have been troubled to close to $6000000000.00 So. There's no way that would have happened I know that everybody knows came close to buying the bills and he said if you had won the bidding for that team he wouldn't run for president and without giving away any my political leanings and you know perhaps better for the country you. Bought the bills but I'm not going to cry it out and say that I understood. Well valve my friend I don't know who did better for the n.f.l. But perhaps. You know he did he didn't have to get the Patriots one point and I think the Colts a long time ago but. Again even if he had gotten the bills franchise I'm still. Families left from the 86 us to fill 12 and I'm still not sure that it was the best that the league would have approved him as an owner stole a lot of hard feelings towards trying to get past understood he would decide t.b.s. I mean I don't remember word for word what he said but I think that his point is that we're not. Following the guidelines of the whole thing is not in alignment with the mission and core values of the Hall of Fame how exactly are you supposed to know when were you given are you updated on what the mission of the all of fame in the values of a hall of fame in the core of the Hall of Fame is about did I do that once a month once a year once every 10 years when does that memo come out that you guys have just completely discarded. Yeah I'd like to know when he got the memo that even told him what the core values. And this is all about being insulted that he didn't get in on the 1st ballot or the 2nd and then blaming the voters for Jodi all I can tell you is it is probably the most thorough process each year that I've ever taken part in and we sit there and debate candidates for the better part of 7 hours and I don't have I can just speak for myself I do not have an agenda when it comes to any player I'm very open minded . Certainly you know I have my feelings about each go each guy going in but then I'm completely open minded listening to the arguments and if the something that comes up that I wasn't aware of that I think put somebody over the top and then certainly I'm going to I'm going to lead in that direction I had nothing against to Rowland's when the whole frame directors told us that unlike a rest off the field such as drug arrested you w.y. Or anything that is not part of a guy's resume but and this is a big but here the locker room can be you can consider the extension of the field and thus can be taken into consideration when deciding how to vote. The reason he didn't get in the 1st 2 years were not because numbers certainly deserved to get into constant numbers it was because he was considered to cancel the cancer in the locker room who stabbed his quarterbacks in the back from Jeff Garcia to Donovan McNabb to Tony Romo and the 1st 3 teams could not wait to get rid of him and and that was the reason he didn't get in the 1st 2 years whether you want to sit there and say that should not be taken into consideration you know I can understand that part of the argument but what we were doing in reality was following the guidelines. Of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in taking that a consideration but I also want to say before you ask any of the questions if I voted for him the 1st 2 years under question 15 to 10 and then he did not make the cut. To 10 he years so I had made up my mind on the cuts in 10 to 5 while whether I would vote for him or not because I want you know it up when you make a judgment on who else is left but people said I've campaigned against him which is entirely incorrect I voted for him. You know my peers in the room they did it in a war not of votes to keep him alive past a cut to 10 in Soviets year when he made it and I appreciate your telling us your specific voting pattern thank you for that you mentioned Hall of Fame directors again how often who are the Hall of Fame directors when you and how do you get these directives from the Hall of Fame directors that off the field off to away from the stadium violations to society the law whatever else not what we consider part of judging an n.f.l. Player for Hall of Fame status but locker room things not necessarily on the field of play but directly tied to the team and relationship without the players and the like is who gives you these directives how often you get them when you get them. I can say I don't know because. I know I've been on the committee for 8 or 9 years now and. I'm short some point Joe Hardin probably explained it to me. But I already knew it going in and if you cover the n.f.l. And you're right about the Hall of Fame voting every year even if you know the committee you know what the standards are the the part about owners in the locker room was a unique situation that came up. In the meeting room today that we discussed them for the 1st time in 2016 and we that's what we were told that you may consider the. You may consider the locker room as an extension of the field if you want to I mean some people do some people don't it was the 1st time I had heard that and like I said it certainly entered my mind it ultimately it didn't impact my vote in the 15 to 10 but I mean I can tell you unequivocally that that was the reason that he didn't make it past 10 the 1st 2 years the interesting thing that we had going this year with Randy Moss who whose resume was very similar to owners both on the field and in the locker room I mean in Minnesota he says you know I play when I want to play he totally shut it down and that chip into dam against the Giants in 2001 was in $41.00 nothing in fact and he stopped playing about the middle of the 1st quarter he goes to Oakland and he completely quit on that team. And and only didn't make it until the 3rd where a lot of the locker stuff although not identical It was fairly similar so it's also it's a matter of timing on who you're up against in a particular year and then people have their own prejudices or agendas you know it's not supposed to be that way but you know everybody's shoe in and. It just is what it is and do you think that the mosque going in this year that there was enough support for me is going to get the vote is going before is about that that actually helped Owens because as you say they are considered in some people's eyes similar and that Moss is getting and how we hold him to yell out do you think more of his appearance on the ballot actually helped get Owens in this time. You know it could be because it might even hard to justify putting Mawson without putting always in so they might have gone 10. Most of the way carried always across the finish line I mean these are all things that you can't know for sure unless you poll each of the 48 voters but. You know it certainly.
