Sports radio filling in for Jim Rome Ok Billy Ray today is Tom Brady's 40th birthday Tom Brady is 40 years old today happy birthday Tom you know I used to hate Tom Brady Why would you Hey Tom Brady because Tom Brady is the guy that if you could change lives with any guy I used to want to change lives with Derek Jeter right his Derek Jeter is a world champion and he's a New York Yankee and he's good looking he could have any chicks he wants and he's a superstar he's loaded I would want to be Derek Jeter. But then just be the best Scott Kaplan you can be not being the best not nearly enough I want to be Tom Brady I mean come on Wouldn't you love to trade lives with Tom Brady for just one day no Billy Ray I know you've got a great life I did I know you got a great wife right I know you got a great daughter Indeed life is good yeah Tom's is better. I'm tellin ya Tom's is better listen to me if I could have Tom Brady's life for a day you're 40 years old you're a 5 time Super Bowl champion you're still in the best shape your life the only problem in life that Tom Brady has gorgeous wife kids money wealth for generations only problem and Tom Brady's life right now is that America still sees that terrible picture of him from the scouting combine when he was coming out of Michigan the tall milky skinny Tom Brady that no one ever thought could play in the n.f.l. Is now the greatest player in the history of the National Football League Yes So the other stuff shouldn't bother him very much read it right it's like. I got a few $100000000.00 in a bank I'm married to a supermodel by the way she makes money than me has fun I got houses all over the world I ever had but he loves me I'm the greatest player of all time so what there's the skinny milky disgusting kid that nobody thought could ever play in the n.f.l. That was then I'm 40. I'm a freakin man dude Bodhi I'm a man on 40. I am a man I'm 40 I'm freakin Tom Brady Happy Birthday To Me Happy Birthday town is what I'm saying yes you know what it is it's football season you can feel it now write it you can feel it I hear the theme you know I can hear it oh yeah there it is hello friends and welcome to Los Angeles where along with my partner longtime n.f.l. Star quarterback didn't really win very much but he was good Tony Romo Hello friends I'm Jim Nance. You can hear the music is full. Of all season starts tonight can you believe it it's great Callen time coming to cowboys in Cardinals Let's go tonight Hall of Fame game. That kind of snuck up on me and I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'm so desperate for football I'll watch the Hall of Fame game on Thursday night yes you will Al Michaels Chris Collins worth Michel to foil on the call to Al Michaels will be with us later great how Michael's will be on the Jim Rome show later Scott Kaplan Billy Ray Smith filling in for roaming and we're going to talk to Al Michaels later 1st game of the season and he's got the call and talk to Big Al uncle Big Al as he likes to be called Coming up later on and you know that everybody's at the in the Hall of Fame inductions biller and Canton and for us guys from San Diego this should be. Specially for a guy like yourself who played for the Chargers for 10 years when they were in their rightful home San Diego. And a guy who I can recall when Jr say own had his memorial not he but when there was a memorial service at the stadium formerly known as Qualcomm for junior seo after he had committed suicide there you were Billy Ray on stage fright right next to Le Dainian Tomlinson Yeah very very dramatic day both of you. A big part of the junior sales story you were the mentor to junior when he 1st entered the league and Levine Ian Tomlinson was the men toward as Junior was leaving. This should be for us a great event the Hall of Fame inductions in Canton Ohio this weekend as le Dainian Tomlinson the greatest charger of our era the modern era as the Dainian Tomlinson goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Why is it that I have this like sick disgusted. Not having not got I don't I don't have the pleasure and the feelings that I want to have for our friendly Dainian Tomlinson who we got to watch his entire career from draft day till the day he was unceremoniously booted out of town and went to the Jets we got to see the whole thing and it was a great show and a great player great man great friend but why then don't I have this great feeling for l.t. Going into the Hall of Fame if I know why I mean it's the fact that my team left my city to go to the rival town makes me not even love the leaning Tomlinson going into the Hall of Fame Wow that's tough. I mean you're shifting basically your emotions from the team to l.t. And you're putting it all it on l.t. This is very good yeah this is very very good I'm trying to help this is therapy really helping this is a therapy say I am taking my feelings and my anger and just. I don't show dumping it on Ellen saying on him you know what you know what let me tell you something as you're psycho analyzing this I'm going to tell you this it's his fault . Those fault not my fault what do you mean if you know you're hearing some of the note you have to take ownership of your feelings they're your feelings. They're Nama they're not his They're your this is a therapy session with Dr Bill where we're coming to grips with this let me tell you something you're going to have we're going to make you feel better you're right here I am taking my anger for the team and the ownership and the league and I'm dumping it all on learning how to say can we get a couple of Margarita's. Things like. This should be seriously this should be like the greatest Hall of Fame induction for guys like us and I say guys like us and I know that there's probably a lot of guys driving around out there I know you clones are driving around going now a lot of guys like you out there I mean this is an abnormal crew we've got going on yes but for guys like us that love football and for guys like us that look at this trip this class going into the whole thing this should be such a great class think about it Jerry Jones is Jerry Jones not a part of the last 25 years of your life huge and right I mean isn't Jerry Jones such a big part of your football life in the last 25 years yeah Callaways fan or not you know when he bought the team you know when he hired Jimmy Johnson you know when he put together you know Troy Aikman and Smith and Michael Irvin and you know about their Super Bowl run and you know about firing Jimmy Johnson and hiring Barry Switzer and everything that's happened since in the new stadium Jerry Jones is a Hall of Famer he's been part of your football life for the last 25 years oh even earlier for me he's a Razorback old Arkansas Razorbacks dad right yeah old school Jerry Jones would pig Yeah your dad play with him no you play with Jonesy No No Ok I'm good yeah but you're a much bigger Arkansas legend than he is tell you that right now then who then Jerry Jones whole no I'm not a no you credit on the football field you in Arkansas a little bit of history and total package as you know absolutely as you write you're a nobody and you're an absolute nothing and I am a no would you rather switch lives a Jerry Jones or is your life better than his to oh yeah of course you. Jerry Jones has been a part of your football life for 25 years Kurt Warner. Kurt Warner. I freaking love her or her who doesn't I love Kurt Warner just a little teeny tiny bit less than I love Drew Brees and everybody who tunes into our hero in Southern California knows about the man crush I've had on Drew Brees Have you talked to Drew about this because you know he's going to hear Drew Drew look all I can tell you is that I love you baby right Ok but but Kurt Warner is a close 2nd is there a greater story in the history of the Super Bowl they incur or are people will always tell you historians Joe Nemeth number one running off the field sorry Billy Ray I know your dad was on the receiving end of the Boston so I got that I'm over you are you're still you're over it I'm over it because I heard you complain a lot that because my dad never got over it but I'm over it but when the Colts lost that game right to the Jets and you didn't get a new bike because your dad didn't win the Super Bowl you're now over that I am over it Ok I have a car oh. She need a dyke you don't really need to leave the house really. Current Warner in my opinion is the greatest Super Bowl story in the history of the Super Bowl I agree Joe name it's guarantee and running off the field with the number one great story but the guy who goes from the small school kid who can't get the shot who gets through the Arena League and the n.f.l. Europe league and his as the story goes bagging groceries and then the next thing you know through an injury to Trent Green he becomes the starter and becomes a Super Bowl champion and m.v.p. And Kurt Warner is a Hall of Famer and he's been part of your football life for the last 25 years like the story from when it started to where we are the Super Bowls where he went to other teams. Guy's a legend Yes he is Davis Terrelle Davis is a guy that remember John Elway couldn't win a Super Bowl John Elway needed a running game in the latter part of his career to ultimately win a Super Bowl and it was to rel Davis No matter how long he played no matter what kind of numbers he put up he was so impactful for the time that he played for the Denver Broncos and delivered championships guy superstar Yes he is I think if you go a little more old school and you're looking can easily Seattle Seahawks fans I mean this is the original leader of this is what you want when you when you draft to safety when you bring a safety in a guy that I mean has has no no problems just letting guys up all over the field he was fantastic old school King Dome Yeah Seattle Seahawks old school a.f.c. West Seattle Seahawks That's right young people that's right try to Seattle Seahawks used to play in the a.f.c. West Yeah and that stadium is the best in the n.f.l. As far as I'm concerned there's no better place in the National Football League to see a game then right there in Seattle but the old school King Dome indoors not like that that stadium today Century Link. Place is amazing I close listen it's football season let's get down. 180-636-8686 that's the phone number 180-636-8686. I think Jim is already on it have you ever heard Jim say the name Spamhaus on his show. Jim with his connections to the city of San Diego Jim knows the Chargers belong in San Diego which is why they will forever be called the San Diego Chargers of Los Angeles lost in via Orange County if this is a team that wanted to move to l.a. And moved to freaking coast I'm a so it's the same line out of swingers every time in my head dude you don't know what it's like man you don't grow up out here man I grew up in l.a. No dude Anaheim Well whatever no not what our Anaheim in l.a. Are 2 completely different places Ok but as mentioned it is football season Billy Ray how you feel he gives you the kind of oh no the question is how you feel I feel great but I know the way you are when it gets the football season old linebacker you start to have that like it's it's just it's training camp this is what I'm supposed to your whole mentality sorts sort of changes yeah you know what I'm I'm not starting to get back out on the field I haven't had any offers so I'm not going to go that there do you like the college campus. There's no offers no but it's been fun we cover and I pay that listen let me tell you something everybody still for whatever reason college Capron it is still a buzz term in this country right now where you know should he get a contract should somebody sign him is he can he play is he too controversial this is breaking news here today but Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffers what they're calling a leg injury during a fall at practice according to n.f.l. Insider Adam Schefter. Schefter. Says the team is quote concerned Tannehill fell awkwardly on the sideline while scrambling and didn't get a trainer's look at his left knee which did have a brace on it before taking him inside he had a sprained a.c.l. Mc on the same the last season did not require surgery and he's coming off of his best year of face of the Billy Ray Ryan Tannehill. I never really thought I never really thought this guy was any good and what I mean by that is that I had a game a couple years ago it was a c.b.s. T.v. Game it was Chargers when they were in their rightful home and dolphins and we sat in those production meetings and a lot of times you feel like in a production meeting like you get to know a guy you think this guy's going to be a star I can feel it this guy is lame so he had to come in the Ryan Tannehill comes in and I had to do the interviews I think it was Kevin Harlan and and Rich Gannon myself the producers etc Ken Mack and Marc Grant producer director and we get them at this meeting with Ryan Tannehill and I'm like dude that guy he don't have it he does not have a quarterback leadership personality doesn't have it and man I got to say last year. I was kind of eating some crow you know now the same moron by the way that I well I have to admit this I mean I really must admit that he was talking to a television group it wasn't like he was leaving the locker room out on the field to to have a great comeback and win a game but when Peyton Manning would walk into a production meeting when Philip Rivers walks into a production meeting when Alex Smith walks into a production meeting you get the sense from those kinds of guys that they are the leaders Ryan Tannehill did not project that I have and that's my own judgment you know that that's maybe why I know what I know you know well you know I could be around of Lenny on the sideline chick. But I gotta say I also really felt that same way although way too early I judge his guy way too early. Derek Carr his 1st game when when they fired Dennis Allen a few years ago and to and Tony Sparano took over as coach that he was so shell shocked I remember being in a production meeting when I go and this guy doesn't have it and rich dad was like dude you're you don't know what you're talking about this guy's going to be a star and get it was right of course I was wrong so Miami Dolphins fans take the opinion for what it's worth a legitimate thing to do that I've been wrong a couple of times just a couple of dogs if Ryan Tannehill is out for the Dolphins if the backup quarterback for the Dolphins is a guy named Matt Moore I actually like Matt more now again I've just qualified for that I was wrong about Tannehill I was wrong about Carr I like that more that more was a good player at Oregon State that Moore was a good backup quarterback in Carolina guy's been in the league for 9 years has been with the dolphins for 6 years has a winning record as a starter it's only 15 and 13 it's not that much of a sample size but I think that more is a good player but to the Dolphins now all of a sudden decide to go in on the Collin capper next story what would you do Billy Ray would you touch Collin capper Nick No I just wouldn't I mean it's it's too much on the team going into a season and it's it's just not worth the bother. If you don't need it. What if I told you that Matt Moore could be the starter Ryan Tannehill is out for the year hypothetical and there's no backup that you've ever heard of there's no back up that has any experience whatsoever you're the Dolphins you go into the season with more a bunch of nobodies overcalling Caton I don't think that that particular scenario can actually exist I mean there's enough quarterbacks out there you're going to be able to find somebody and somebody that you're going to be happy as far as just being a backup I want to talk more about this is a day goes on no doubt because this column capturing story it's amazes me how we're all still talking about this and here I am still talking about it we are in for Jim Rome today it's got Kaplan Billy Ray Smith at Scott and we are on Twitter make sure you're tagging Jim at Jim Rome on Twitter coming up one of our favorites one of Jim's favorites. Love this guy San Francisco 49 er general manager John Lynch Jr will join us what's his quarterback situation in San Francisco in the post. You talk to John Lynch Jr 49 er g.m. Preventive maintenance yes to ensure a safe journey during the summer months ahead O'Reilly auto parts better parts better prices we can all say it together every 3 days they were a one of our favorites one of Jim's favorites is John Lynch Jr The general manager of the San Francisco 49 er's he is standing by and he is on the air Johnny Good afternoon Scotty are you guys doing doing great John how about you don't often have training camp time and it's it's a great time because football is here Football is right around the corner and be our training camp and what it used to be. I came out on my deck and look at out of the field right now I came out on my deck Tuesday and I look out our off day after 4 days of practice when there were you know about a little different I think it was 14 days before us but they had our players are doing yoga on the field we got you over here we got it you know that's the n.f.l. These days well John you remember the days of doing yoga right. I do I do I just use Yeah which is a form of yoga and a lot of it's good stuff you know you're making it sound like hey these players get days off and they're doing yoga and they're getting massages like as if they're soft today but I saw that Jay Glazer put out and he's in your bathroom in your office do it and he sees that you have embroidered in your bathroom is that a 49 er thing or is that a John Lynch thing I didn't even know I had those I just walked by him every day this is a bathroom thing plays with you better that's what he had today he was in there doing an interview and next that you know he video with some foul language talking about my minute minute washcloths So we learned every day you know if somebody was in my bathroom in my office and then asked me to come into the bathroom after. I would have to then determine how long were they in there what did they do and why are they trying to bring me encourage I think that about her that's a good point I never let them in your bathroom. John Lynch Jr is the general manager the 40 niners he's on with Scott me are filling in for Jim Rome on c.b.s. Sports radio tell us what the quarterback situation is with your team the 40 niners Yeah so we have you know we went out in free agency and acquired Brian Hoyer and Brian or is is our starter we got a map Barkley and we drafted a kid from I was c.j. Beth there who were very high on in his progress in nicely but Brian Hoyer has really there's an opportunity here and a lot of people because Kyle and I have been Shanahan and I have been very vocal about you know understanding that you need a franchise quarterback in this league if you want to compete year in year out for championships in and that's that's where we want to get and so we're going to pursue that until we find that and so a lot of people have just felt like Hoyer is a bridge to that and you know our response has been eased got a chance to make make that. Ok so he's doing a great job embracing the opportunity he's been with Kyle before so there's a comfort in the in the system that we're running and he's been a really really playing well in camp and we're looking forward to sitting Brian out there along with Matt Barkley and not c.j. Better than this pre-season you know John I don't know what's going to happen to Brian Hoyer but he's one of those guys I feel like that if everybody would just not make him feel like his next interception is going to get him to the bench if he just if people could just lay off of him a little bit you know what I mean take it easy that maybe he could be good I always felt like he was just like an interception away in Cleveland cause he was supposed to be a Band-Aid there and then he got booed out of the stadium I remember work on the sidelines of the game between Houston and Kansas City in the playoffs he got booed out of the stadium has he threw a bunch of picks in that game. Are you guys committed to him being your starting quarterback or is he an interception away from being benched and give Barkley a chance he's the guy right now you clearly a separated himself with his play in the offseason and in these 1st 1st week of camp these he's playing really well and you know you go back to that time in Cleveland. Browns we're going call Shanahan was the office a coordinator or was a quarterback and they were a top 10 office in the league they succumb to pressure to play got him Johnny Manziel and that was the end of his of his reign there and things went downhill from there for Brian in Cleveland so he's played good football you think back to Chicago last year he was playing at eye level you got injured and so we've got to keep him healthy and we think he can really flourish in this in this office tell us a little bit about she's a bastard and I'm working with him and how he's coming along yeah my hardest challenge with him is not calling him Bobby. Grandpa you guys have. So every time I'm talkin interview I want to call him Bobby for some reason but. He's a really really good kid and he's a guy that we really just grew to appreciate throughout the draft process Kyle Shanahan has really a specific criteria of what he's looking for in a quarterback in and c.j. Seemed to be the guy in the draft that really best fit that and we kept coming back to him you know I always it's it's pro style they run the football a lot which is a rarity in college football these days so he didn't have the got the numbers that a lot of people his office of line really struggled his senior year but we went back and really studied his junior year we think he's got a lot of game and he's kind of has that those intangibles the natural leadership the quick process and all the things that we look for in a quarterback we think he has those traits and he's going to have a really good opportunity to play a lot this preseason and go show us what. He's all about were very high on teaching Yeah just considering I'm of the Father in the bloodlines I mean the football i.q. Has got to be through the roof it really is yeah and you know it's it's you know obviously talked a lot of football with his grandfather he's been around it a lot his dad is a big time country music writer and there's dad through music. Like cool stuff about him or he did You can write a song or you know not. Going to John Lynch the general manager of the San Francisco 49 or Scott capital or a smith in for Jim Rome on the c.b.s. Sports radio network John how how different is it for you this time of year you might be visiting a camp here or there as a broadcaster for Fox but now they handed you the keys to their franchise and for anybody that's ever been to Santa Clara and seen the 40 niners facilities the stadium I mean it is world class in my opinion how is it going is a 1st time general manager. You know it's going well it's got it's it really is we you know one of the things that I knew would be important just with the lack of experience in this particular role would be to go put a great team around me and I was able to do that Adam Peters is a guy I got from the Denver Broncos He's our Director of Player Personnel and then Mark Mayhew a guy I played with. He came on board and he sat in the seat that I've. Had And now before and so I've got great resources to rely on there were a lot of great people in the building Kyle and I have really good communication and so there's there's good. There's a good feel and a good vibe between the scouting staff and the coaching staff were on the same page I thought the draft really well and you know the difference I guess than being a broadcaster the hours. Here early and I don't leave till late but you know I think that's probably what drew me to this place the Niners meant a lot to me I played for Bill Walsh in college I played for Dennis Green I played for Jon Gruden who all had ties Mike Shanahan all had ties to this place and you know when I was growing up this was one of the franchises and so the opportunity that came along with a head coach that I believed in and knew we just really jived Well in terms of our thoughts on what makes a championship football team it was an opportunity that that I felt like I couldn't pass up and you know it's it is different for sure and but but I'm fully invested and I'm enjoying that I believe that John Jr is the general manager the 49 ers are you making more money now as a g.m. Or when you were in your last contract player come on. Now. One more time in this role. I'm right you make a more modern art was very good for saying that box may have paid similarly and plan for the Buccaneers the Broncos may have paid you well but dude being a g.m. Is real money nowadays. See it's only a question so yes I'm ready next question you're right I'm coming right back to money just so you know as a general manager are you seriously involved in negotiations yet you know we have a tremendous. Kepala just here. They and he's been here and he's done a great job but. I let Prague do most of the work but there's times in each negotiation not not every single one but on the bigger ones that that I'll get involved just from. You know trying to push the thing across the finish line and you know a big part of that Scott has been educating myself so that I can get on these calls and it's been like you know salary cap 101 but yeah it's been awesome and jumping and I feel like I'm a student again and you know learning as much as I can and you know that that's really working well it's you know that was Solomon Thomas That's where I want to go I want to ask you so you're 1st round draft choice is a defensive end from your alma mater Stanford and the story goes that when you went back to school you and him had a class together so you've known this kid for a long time. I'm curious to know what is it like you're on one side of the table he's on the other side of the table you're Stanford Alonzo you guys were classmates you worked on a project together and there's a real relationship here what is it like to be negotiating with this guy. Well you know that's I guess the thing we're both a little insulated from that but you know part of part of the deal I think from our stance was I know this kid he's not going to hold that. And he took us right out of the Levit so. It gives us gives you a little bit of knowledge on Am I knew exactly what we were getting in terms of the makeup of the kid in the family but in all honesty you know when you're when you're when you're charged with an opportunity like this you don't do it because you you really like someone and he went to your school you do it because you turn on the film and you think this guy can be a game changer and that's exactly what we saw with Solomon Thomas now it's helpful that he checks every box because he's an unbelievable kid he's he's a leader he's a he's just a passionate football player and so everything that was important to us you know for a guy you're picking that high we felt like we could have missed with him and he's off to a great start in camp and I think he's going to be a really really special player for us we're talking to John Jr He's a 49 er general manager 1st year from the broadcast booth right into the n.f.l. General Ok real quick couple a couple of things where you think is going to be a challenge for Tony Romo doing the opposite going from the field to the booth and stepping into the limelight the way he is what do you think. Oh man how you know I think the biggest challenge it's hard enough let me step in in. You know I stepped into the 7th grade and I know a lot of people were watching those games at Fox when I 1st stepped in and he stepped into the number one crew at c.b.s. But I think the biggest challenge as I look at not only doing that he's doing 2 games that we have a lot of we other data back and yeah. I think he's going to be floored to flourish in that role the amount of work that it takes you know I've been trying to help Jay Cutler. A little bit he kind of stepped into my role at Fox and just you know just making sure that these guys understand to be good at this. You've got to you've got to study at times more than you did as a player because you're studying every facet of of the game each each team every facet you got to know you know when I played I can honestly tell you I knew every 3rd string player well as a broadcaster you better because if they come in and you don't know anything about them you're in trouble so the hours of preparation that detail and then for Tony I think it's going to be hard enough because I think it's just to me there's I think there's some exceptions but it really is just a rep is nice where your eyes should be looking it's not going to be the same as when he played so how he's going to handle those things knowing Tony he's a guy who really takes pride in his preparation so he's gone through a lot of these things but you can't really do it until you do it so now what helps him is he steps in with one of the great pros to ever do it and Jim Nantz and so I think he's got a big ad start there and he's got the best producers at c.b.s. The best directors but it's still going to be a challenge I think the enormity of work and it gets tiring and you know you're traveling constantly you can be going do 2 games a week I you know so I'm telling you it's not. Real quick we got we got a minute left Real quick bill or am I going to ask all of our guests this today because the other day when I when I texted Johnson to come on to the show I sent him a picture of his all mater his high school football modern That's where my son plays high school ball and not only is it football season where you're at training camp it's high school football season so real quick if you can John Lynch his greatest high school football memory we're going to ask everybody the same question today. Yeah gosh there's so many of them the only one minute grade you can do. My greatest nice high school memory you know I think is unfortunately a negative one and it was you know I my 1st game of my senior year I'm being recruited I was a quarterback and we're playing in that stadium and it was in the 1st year that stadium and we're lighting people up we're running a version of the run and shoot and I go to throw a screen pass 3 guys follow my lead. And I break my leg and so here I think you know all my dreams are shattered but it was really a formative. You know situation for me in that you know I could sit there and sulk I was fortunate that some schools stayed with me Notre Dame stayed with me once they did everybody stayed with me and. Everything you know but that unfortunately when I walk in that stadium that's what I think about more than anything because we were going to have a special year so it's not a real great but it but I think I think just all the great times with all your buddies that's when football is special and it's always special but your high school memories that those are special and Johnny thank you so much for doing this for us that we do appreciate the time I know you're busy man but we do and good luck to the seasonal top many times Thanks John always great coming on with you guys thank you and even better to come on with us on Jim show there you go challenge junior Let's move on here let's go yes I make more money as a general manager than I did as a player let's let you go I know what you want to know how much how much after taxes how much you have to pay your agent how much is like spending I know what you want to know this is the Jim Rome show Scott Campbell to Billy Ray Smith filling in on c.b.s.
