The following program was recorded earlier for rebroadcast at this time on 7 10 am the word. Show for you Eric Metaxas trivia buffs out there canary Secret Service code name is sure to go. Down the man will deny it but it's true anyway here's. My friend Eric you know that's just not right that is just not right I'm not going to deny it because you said I would but I write and leave it at focus but it doesn't work because Spanish in your Greek you know John you just you've just let the audience know that you're here that was my job man this is my show folks I'm sitting here with my friend the Reverend John Rankin John you're one of those friends that you know the the more I know people the the less appropriately I introduce them because instead of mentioning all of your accolades I just say Hey How you doing. You've written so many books and in so many things people have listened to this program who heard you they they know more about you than I'd be able to tell right now but for the those folks who are tuning in who know nothing about the Reverend John Rankin what what should we tell them to introduce them for to this conversation. I grew up an agnostic Unitarian and I come from a long line of abolitionists Presbyterian ministers I won't give the details on that right now I'm at the Lord by divine Pippen age 14 you met the Lord by divine appear Phinney another words you became a Christian he showed up supernaturally when I was a 14 year old when I was seeking the one true creator seeking to understand my place and the universe right and. Undergraduate degree in history adenosine University in Ohio. Gordon Kohn Well Theological Seminary in Massachusetts started that exactly 40 years ago teach him an Ethics and Public Policy at Harvard which was taking my theological training and investing in Ethics and Public Policy and now my advancing years I am working on a Ph d. At the Oxford center for Mission studies on Hebrew covenant and political freedom and so in all these years I have taught. In quite a number of churches across the country I've done forums you've moderated several of them on all the Ivy Leagues and well beyond where the goal has been to enter into conversation and mutual questions among people who really disagree with me theologically politically or in some capacity where the goal is to share a love of hard questions where you are the Image of God and people equally and having done 100 well actually more than $200.00 of these events in one shape or another public events I would say in all but maybe 2 cases the people I've hosted I have seen the Holy Spirit humanize them which is the whole goal walk out feeling more human than they walked in and maybe only 2 cases that I run into people who really were just bent on hell you know they just did not like be humanized that's interesting because I've as you said I've been to a number of them I've helped. Moderated some of them and what you really bring is the love of God. To people who are your ideological or theological. Political enemies you show them the love of God and you show them are the respect that we are all commanded when we're commanded to love it means we're committed to respect people as image bearers of God whether they know it or not God knows it and he commands us to to live it so that something really beautiful you've done and those are you call the Mars Hill or I'm going to now let me have a little bit of fun with you Ok. Every command in the Hebrew Bible has no force to make us so bad it is all our informed choice to say yes or no to it Ok so that's the 1st observation Secondly if we know that we're all made in God's image and that's how we treat people then they will either rise to it or they will fall away from it and most people will rise to it those who won't are these self appointed leaders bent on power over other people and so what happens is that you and I in Christ have no enemies who are human beings they may view us as enemies but if you really grasp that the book a story of light it's because of the demonic principalities behind it's not you that rejects a Jesus it's me that reject And so when you go through the entire Hebrew Bible it's the demons behind the pagan nations that are invested in sorcery sacred prostitution and child sacrifice and trying to kill the messianic line that's what that's all about so once we grasp the whole biblical story line we love and we are willing to lay our lives down for the sec about love and but we war in prayer and our character and being sacrified we war against of men the demonic powers and principalities the want to kill and destroy Ok so you are the announcements that you made recently you said that the t.-e. R. I which people can find it t. I dot org that you are launching an international leadership school that's obviously doing this in high. But I can sign up they can get it online there's all kinds of stuff and. The larger question I guess is how well do we know the whole Bible and then the subquestion in the face of a hostile culture right and there are number of questions that you throw out should we just go down the line with these questions we can do that in a minute but let me give a little background 1st church I have been teaching. Biblical theology you want to one and political theology want to one in churches for 35 years. But by the same token I've been a risk taker in terms of trying to reach out to a. Hostile culture and it's only now that I have reached. I'm old enough so that I get all the Medicaid mail So what happens is I finally organize pulled all together in a disciplined capacity and so with my team of advisers we've decided to do this in Hartford and yes those who joined the cohorts if you go to t. I dot org The 1st bullet point will give you all these details all the links those who join will have online access anytime they want to and then also those who would like to live stream beginning September 26th and thereafter just contact the team and we'll let you know how to do that and so but the idea for the school was actually given to me years ago in Uganda I was there teaching a bunch of clergy and I got a call from the sponsor saying listen listen we need you to do a leadership school and I never thought of leadership school I thought of school and I something realized and my team of advisers is confirm this Yes John you need to find the people in all walks of life which is why I'm not a seminary professor which is why I was interested in teaching in the churches you need to find people in all walks of life who want to become biblically literate so my promises anyone who does all these 7 classes so therefore Wednesday nights each in live in the Bay online and in live streamed and this goes the next year in all 7 classes and we have a certificate program where you can get it for and you'll be tested you'll get online tested and you mentioned earlier about teaching how to think the way that we can do these online questions you better know the material if you're going to pass because I'm looking not for what you can regurgitate but how well you think as an image bearer of God which is the real goal so that's available to people you know you'll see that when you click on my website so what happens is that I'm convinced that when you complete this curriculum you will be Biblically literate one o one. With utter confidence in the bible its truth its beauty will recommend to you a resource library as well so you can answer 99 percent of the questions you have about the tech also written some books that hopefully are helpful and so that you could be a risk taker for the love of God in a hostile culture and so the way I like to sum it up this way going back to Genesis 2 is that God gives an aggressive hospitality to the toughest questions and that's what the Garden of Eden is that's the garden gets seminary and everything in between and also what a great phrase and aggressive hospitality we go into the presence we don't say come into our church we go into the presence and we hospitable let me tell you a story I was meeting with a a rabbi years ago at Beth Israel the largest synagogue in doing little blocks from where I grew up in West Hartford and we were having a delightful conversation and and till Somehow the subject of Jews for Jesus came up and he got very nervous I said No I said don't don't worry about that I said listen most people who go to Messianic some of God's half of them are Gentiles and they're learning their Jewish heritage all that much more right I said but let me tell you that I as as a Christian and deeply indebted to the Jewish people for how I conduct myself because really how I said look you know that the Temple of Zion is actually no way this is too hot to try to do when we come back folks we're going to get the rest of this Texas show talking my friend the Reverend John Rankin go to Metaxas Talk dot com Thank you. But. I'm so fearful I feel like my world is about to come crashing down around me. Keith's brain that he is was amazing I'm sitting here talking to a friend of mine the Reverend John Rankin John you were just in the middle of talking about a conversation you had some years ago with a rabbi until you start talking about Jews for Jesus he got a little bit uncomfortable and then you really were explaining the link the debt that we Christians oh it to Jews and there's so many people who don't know that so I love it when you talk about this so what happened was I said you understand Psalm 48 you understand other places where design is a city Southern a hill to be a light to the Gentiles you're saying this to the rabbi now by the way when was this roughly about 25 years Ok 23 years ago and so what happens is that and that's why the Queen of Sheba came once to tell me I was done and so as to be a light to the Gentiles So what happens is that and that you have to court the gentiles with the Jim Thompson come on the outer parts of the court seeking the God of Israel and so I said that light is a light an invitation he says Yes I said well wait the light of Zion on yes the light of the Jews and my light as invitation to those of the yawned Israel its beauty its law everything is the invitation and the Queen of Sheba is the grade. Example of a woman who took up that invitation and so what happens is its character and its beauty and slight commends itself and yes yes yes I said well the difference between a Jew in a Christian is the you have a physical temple we are portable temples and I said the Holy Spirit dwells us there's a kind of glory upon the temple solemn and the Holy Spirit dwells us so that we are portable temples to go out into the world this is the aggressive holiday so what are so you're describing. Just for people who maybe aren't tracking it was this idea that people when we think about. In Jerusalem obviously as Christians we believe that God says now we are temples of the Holy Spirit yes God has come to live not in a temple made by human hands but in each of us who receives him who receive Jesus and so we can walk around and bring the glory of God anywhere and here's the key the ethics are the same the Temple in Jerusalem never imposed itself theologically or politically upon the enemies of Israel we do not impose the gospel on anyone so if we grasp the light and whatever darkness is. Over light is darkness dissipates so what happened that we as Christians if we understand this Biblical history as a Holy Spirit dwells us we go out in the presence of the pagan world and people can see the light and the us and the imitation is there but we never play games we never are coercive he loved it and why does Rabbi love he loved it and he also loved a lot of my midrash emerge storytelling from Genesis one through 3. And the reason he loved it was he knew I got it in terms of Hebrew nature Ok And he was a wired to love hard questions they're wired not to impose themselves and others that's been true through all the history of his sense of the folly of King Saul So what happens is that that's the. Yes of hospitality to hard questions that we as Christians are equipped to do it's just such a great concept and it's funny because I really do feel like a big part of the the tragedy of the Christian church over the centuries is that we haven't been Jewish enough we haven't been Hebrew enough we haven't really understood things the way Jesus and the earliest Christians would have understood them all of them of course being Jewish Eric you've just hit something huge absolutely huge. When Constantine stopped in the 4th century the 4th century when Constantine a Roman general stopped the persecution the church that's good he then made the church the state religion and he gave freedom for Jews and Pagans but he still made it the state religion and put state money into it to protect them from the prior persecutions but give that a little bit further to the days of Theodosius he turns around and starts as as the Emperor to persecute the Jews in the Christians the way the Jews and the Christians had the Jews in the pagans at you thank you now this is interesting because when ever we all know this right as as Americans we love freedom and we know that power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely so it's in human nature that as soon as we even Christians right we say Ok Luther for example says we are going to we want to be Protestants we want to be free we want to do these things and of course then he and other Protestants then begin persecuting the Catholics and it has to work its way out through the centuries because it every level it's a reactionary freedom right freedom from and you boomerang even less you know the freedom for in Genesis to this my whole ph d. Work you don't know how to be proactive but before freedom for as opposed to freedom from so we don't prohibit good as opposed to freedom from the evil right Ok but and that's what that's what my leadership schools all about right is teaching those foundations to begin with but back to Constantine and I'll be brief here but so what happens is that you that the Roman church at the time it's not really fully the universal church until a few centuries later but the church in Rome they lost sight of everything Hebrew in covenantal they were in Greek and Latin and the Greek was losing flavor the Latin was overtaking the Latin Vulgate made a lot of bad translations from the Greek and from the Hebrew and so from Constantine all the way through just before the Reformation there's almost no Hebrew. To within the Roman Catholic church at all the Hebrew revival begins maybe 50 years or so before he before Luther Luther and Calvin and others begin to study the Hebrew and then that's the basis for Reform Theology and Covenant covenantal theology you know it's fast and covenant is checks and balances on power to preserve freedom so you take Hebrew covenant to 3 viable the reformation to the decorous going to penance the u.s. Constitution and that's why we have freed in this country today now make that link for us you know when people talk about the American Constitution and the American uniform form of government basically how is that covenantal How is that related to the Hebrew to the biblical view thing I'll give you a short answer entire Presbyterian polity. Is checks and balances on power among elders It's like the Kahala we talked about that's just the Presbyterian Church but the Presbyterian is the most fully developed covenantal theology that came out of the Reformation they have strengths and weaknesses but they've got covenant very very well this is John Knox well. If John Calvin before John Knox John Knox was a reactionary to me levels it's hard for me to go there with him. At the deep reactionary Calvin not so much but the point is that covenant rose because Hebrew literacy Rose Ok now I just want to this is something I know a tiny bit about but in the course of writing my book on Luther I saw that this trend which was renaissance humanism suddenly there was an interest in Hebrew and Greek and Latin all these original languages and so about 500 little bit over 500 years ago things began to change you just touched on it people I mean there are people that there were friends of Luther's that were accused of being too Jewish I mean it's just fascinating that they they they had become pro Jewish 500 plus years ago in the church began to read the covenant they knew a new covenant without knowing the 1st cover that you know and they could talk about the Law of Moses but they didn't know the whole covenantal history and to make it very simple what it meant was covenant is the opposite of tyranny. In a nutshell this would Daniela's are the great you can argue is the one I'm what I'm working on is the because it has checks and balances on power so we just keep that simple idea as it's gained by the time you get to the declaration of the $56.00 signatories half of them had formed theological education and so the very polity now you've jumped to the Constitution is checks and balances on power that's completely Presbyterian completely covered that all completely Jewish and now and of beauty about covenantal politics going back to the Hebrew bible is it doesn't prescribe a form it prescribes a substance so you can do it in a constitutional monarchy you can do it and in a democratic socialist The theoretically you can do it with a parliament you could do with the us but the us. Checks and balances the best for several reasons but the key is you have a separation between the executive the digital and the legislative and it's all based on the informed choice of all the people so this these are the the this in a choir not without which you don't have covenant and they're all the way to the wood Bible so we are the best inheritors of that worldwide the Swiss of inherited it the Dutch of inherited and other elements influenced by the Reformation but the United States inherited it the most so when it comes to freedom and its very nature the Roman Catholic Church lost sight of that entire thing you've got obedience obedience the church leadership and so forth and yet these are all people who are made in God's image seeking a living God that's what produced the reformation so the Reformation is ekal c.e.o. Reformation to separate from on to the church reform and always you forming the whole church as to what we're dedicated Ok folks we're talking to John Rankin and wonderful to do so stick around we'll be right back. The 936-5496 the word fun 7 10 am And any time anywhere under smartphone. App. It's. To show I can remember John Rankin is my guest Reverend John Rankin Edirne we're talking about many things but I love this idea of really seeing the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith and how. It's kind of funny the more we learn about these kinds of things that the more we get excited about learning more it's kind of like your eyes are open to to really how things work and there's just no question that some of our best leaders I think of Abraham Lincoln understood some of these things he really knew the Bible rather well people forget that and he he called us just chosen nation he understood that this idea of American exceptionalism and he understood that it wasn't rooted. Pitch in anything really other than what we are talking about there is something extraordinary and at the heart of it all I said this many times because I think it's at the heart of what it means to be an American we're blessed to be a blessing we are not Anytime God blesses anything whether it is Israel whether it's America what it whatever whether it's you or me or and we are blessed to be a blessing it's the way God works and he doesn't force us to be a blessing he. Less is us but then it's up to us if we want to use the blessing to bless others that's what he gave it to us for but he doesn't force so it's a it's an a responsibility that should make us tremble really and therefore God's definition of power is a power to give and to bless not to take an trample So when you talk about political power we're talking about those who generally want to take an trample and we are to have the godly power Abraham Lincoln taught and the Bible was his best self teacher and that's why he could never land inside the institutional church he was too biblically literate Wow that's a very interesting and I read this iconography or his Gettysburg Address her or whatnot it's just it's extraordinary what he grasped by getting inside the story line of the Bible when you say American exceptionalism do you know what is exceptional about the United States we have based in checks and balances on power it's not because we're a people not because we are race not because we're religious right it's checks and balances on power so if you want the healthiest possible government it's checks and balances on power and that is what his mitigated sin top down power so that we rebuilt Europe and Japan after World War 2 could not have happened apart from the thinkings of Abraham Lincoln and now you know where do you get that never was I've never I've sometimes you leap in I can't fall right there where did you go just there when you talk about 1st lady going to checks and balances Ok I get that but then you talk about that's why we rebuilt Europe after World because who you are right I made I made a jump there because of Hebrew covenant. From the Hebrews who reformers through the preaching of Whitfield to the signers the declaration to those who constructed the constitution they were all rooted in the Hebrew coven and the idea of checks and balances on power and as Madison said we can't have this constitution without religious people and he meant a biblically literate people at the time he said it so that so infused our culture and this is the real thing over multiple generations that after the war was over and Europe was in ruins and Japan was in ruins and therefore the economy it took Germany the late 1980 s. To recover economically from that So what happens is that we and the United States having defend ourselves against military encroachment of 2 tyrannies turned around and rebuilt them to give to others to rebuild the whole world economy where else do you have any church history it's if you see it in history so I'm saying that that is a fruit of Hebrew covenant and checks and balances of power and therefore the true definition of freedom I guess I'm a little surprised I've not heard that before I mean I understood it viscerally I mean the idea of America as a good nation that has blessed those who have previously harmed us I mean when you think about rebuilding Germany when you think about rebuilding Japan Wow I mean that's extraordinary is the power to give in the face of those who take exactly what she's a sudden look 7 Ok so what happens is that when cultures have enough salt in them of the gospel. Then and it goes from generation to generation it could become instinctive it could become such where people don't know why they behave in certain ways but the Biblical ethic the Hebrew ethic that underscores the New Testament where Jesus comes to fulfill as the Messiah is so deeply in our culture other cultures don't have this pagan called the militaristically. We are nation founded by people seeking religious political economic liberty sin nature is full but what happens is that when you have checks and balances against power it mitigates lessens the sin nature and allows the goodness every deemed Gooden's to happen so what happens is we don't do because we're smarter or nicer or better but rather because Hebrew covenant and as fulfilled in Jesus and ethically put into our Constitution has constructed the people of their own volition over the decades so that that was the instinct in 1906 Well it is interesting because it's one of these things that you don't need to be a Christian to do this I mean I think about the fact that in this country we're always worried about taking care of the poor in fact we do this in the end it's so funny because you know there are many atheists they get that it's become part of our cultural d.n.a. You know and I know that it comes out of the Bible that and to some extent it was Wilberforce that brought this instinct into public life in the West in England and then it leaps over to Lyman Beecher's church in here in Brooklyn Heights right across the river from where we're sitting and it becomes part of our d.n.a. a Lot of people don't know where it comes from they just think that hey we're great Americans We'll be right back folks more with John Rankin is the heir to Texas show . Their books here for Texas show that's the Bee Gees' And of course the biggies always reminds me of Hillsdale College you weren't expecting that were you yes Hillsdale College before I continue my conversation with Dr Julie flattery about a new book Rethinking sexuality I want to remind you there's a website Metaxas for Hillsdale dot com if you get a tax for Hillsdale dot com you will see that there are things just for you the listeners to this program they recently put up a free online course that you can register for all about Congress how it's supposed to work this is a kind of thing you can use in home schooling whatever it is the point is that if we don't understand how our government works it's supposed to work and by the way a big part of understand. That is understanding the fact that if you the people don't understand it it doesn't work so I want to always congratulate Hillsdale on their great work and you can find out more at Metaxas for Hillsdale dot com We're going to return to our conversation with Dr Julie Slattery there is so much here in your book Rethinking sexuality when you think you needed to write a book on this subject well I think this book is probably worth maybe 3 years ago again just with my work with women in churches seeing that essentially we've been sexually discipled by the world but when you say the world you mean the the secular culture so so the secular culture is telling us what to think about sex and it's all wrong it's all screwed up it's all broken and you've got the facts I mean there's there's studies as you said that show that multiple sexual partners are messing you up I mean I say this to young women I don't know who you're dating but make sure that this person wants to spend the rest of his life with you in every way and if this person isn't interested in that run because we're living in a culture that says no you can try this one and try that one and it's going to work against you even more than it works against him but it's going to work against him to yeah I heard someone say something that really clicked for me we can make cigarettes legal but we can never make them healthy and the same issue with sexuality we can legalize anything we want and give each each other freedom like sleep with whoever you want we can never make that healthy and the science is proving that in the physical science of you know about 50 percent of Americans have sexually transmitted diseases right now you look at the emotional health the psychological health and by the way nobody ever talks about that anymore Have you noticed that nobody talks about s.t.d. That there are people out there dealing with this they never hear it talked about on t.v. Or anything because it's doesn't fit the narrative you have half of Americans that's incredible. That's epidemic that's a that's epidemic Wow And you never hear it because it works against the narrative the narrative says oh have sex don't worry about it it's like sneezing it's just it's got nothing to do with your soul or your life or it's just you know whatever and people are having their lives ruined in all kinds. Of ways I mean you know what you just said about how the the world what we Christians call the world the secular culture is telling us what to think about sexuality and we now more and more and more and more have the facts to say it's wrong yeah yeah you look at what's happening with pornography you know it's just it's it's so ubiquitous it's everywhere and it's been and it's been obviously it's everywhere now because the Internet but the point is that we've all been told on some level like what's the big deal it's just it's nothing it's just nothing and yet we're finding that it's ruining actual relationships that young men don't have the capacity for a genuine relationship with another person it's too costly they'd rather have the cheap drug of pornography and he thinks it's messing up the whole culture it is messing up men's lives and women's lives the number one question we get right now there at our organization is young wives who are saying My husband is not interested in sex we hardly ever saw that 20 years ago oh yeah baby how sick is that yes like I mean ladies and gentlemen if you listen to his program if you care about nothing else. Than Than the issue of marriage you want young men and women to have healthy marriages you need to see pornography as the enemy it is the enemy it is destroying lives and you know we're only beginning to talk about it I mean I've heard some people talk about it a little bit the last couple years but it for for decades people were not talking about the printed affects of pornography Yeah so we could talk a. You know all these things sleeping around as T.V.'s pornography sex trafficking me to movement but the big picture is these are all ways that Satan has distorted holy sexuality and unless we reclaim the narrative of why this matters why it's important that God can bring healing that his design works we're just watching at problems. That's it's interesting because I often say too that we we've created this idea that sexuality can exist apart from marriage and when you really think about it all sex outside of marriage is a kind of onanism or pornography in other words it's this thing that was meant for 2 people united for their lifetimes and whenever you take it out of that context it becomes a weird thing it's kind of like eating cotton candy and saying That was dinner that's not even close to dinner it's not even in the category of food it's something you do you know to get like a sugar rush but it has nothing to do with nourishment and digestion it's just a totally separate thing and sexuality has kind of become that and you're here to say that that's not what it was designed for you know yeah it's time it's time to take diggin you know I see this says a tremendous opportunity for faith communities to reach people that are really in pain and hurting because they walked away from God's design and yesterday's est he ministered to the women at the well by by talking about her sex life because that's how he got to her heart and I think in our culture with all the brokenness we can look at this is an opportunity to introduce people not just to God season for sex but more importantly God's design for redemption let's just think about that for a minute people say well just in a very much to say about sex total nonsense the woman at the well you just said it it's one of the most beautiful encounters one of the most human grace filled forgiving loving encounters with the loving God of eternity speaking with this woman this broken woman who has been searching for love in all the wrong places 2000 years ago and he speaks to her with this tenderness this love and he goes right to the issue which you said she's had all of these partners he doesn't say partners but it's just it's amazing when we come back folks we've got a few more minutes left with Dr Julie Slattery the book is. Their folks just a few minutes left with Dr Julie Slattery new book Rethinking sexuality Julie you were just talking between the on the break here about love and truth. When we. Talk about issues of sexuality I think particularly with issues but really any sexual issue people feel this tension that they can either be someone who stands on truth or someone who's loving and we see entire families or even church denominations feeling like they have to choose between the 2 like I want to be loving like Jesus or I want to stand on biblical truth and you can't do both and when we look at scripture we see that not only can you do both we are absolutely called to do both in fact you can't do one without doing the other because the great irony love without truth is not love so if you want to be loving and you're ignoring truth you're actually not being loving and vice versa so yeah this is that's that's really important to say. Because we're again we're living in a culture that gives us a 1000000 false choices and it says you've got to be loving or harsh and truthful it's like right to lie Yeah it really is and you know Jesus our example of how to live was described as a man full of both grace and truth and so he did both 100 percent he never compromised being loving with people because he spoke the truth and he never compromised truth out of his grace and so you know in this ministry of dealing with sexual issues I began asking Lord how can we be people like you that were full of grace and truth you know how can that be true of us and you know the one thing that I noticed was in flip in Chapter 2 Paul says that most we are should emulate Jesus is humility and it was humility that kept him full of truth and grace because if I'm a humble person before God It means I don't have the right to 2nd guess God I can't edit him I can't make him more marketable it keeps me it keeps me rooted in truth and if I'm humble towards other people I can't be self-righteous I can't be Judge Mental I can't be harsh with a. And so I've really learned like like anything if we if we have a puzzle to solve the best way to do it is to ask him how did Jesus live what was his character and I really believe that we can be people because of who Jesus is that are humble rooted in both the truth of Scripture and love towards people I'm so glad you're you're saying all of these things and I'm so glad you reminded us of that beautiful interaction Jesus had. With the woman at the well and how that was about sexuality and love and also the woman taken in adultery again people say Jesus had very little to say about sex my God these are 2 encounters with women not typical for a rabbi to speak to women 2000 years ago and dealing with this very central issue and doing it so beautifully soul lovingly so full of grace and yet very clear on what he believed and didn't believe Julie Slattery were out of time thank you so much for coming to the studio God bless you thank you folks the book is really thinking sexuality God's design and why it matters I hope you will get it read it and use it to glorify God in your life in the lives of those around you very important.
