I'm Lisa Anderson thanks for listening to the ballet show each week on this station . Everyone this is Lisa Anderson with the boundless show and welcome to this week's show going to give you a little heads up later on we're going to answer a question about communicating with your parents what do you do when you're trying to have meaningful conversations with your parents but they're on willing to get real with you they're on willing to go deep or maybe they just don't even know how one of our counselors is going to join us to hopefully help us break the ice and have meaningful conversations with our own parents well for our roundtable today we're actually going to be talking about a heavy subject many of you know and you've seen in the news specifically the rash of teen suicides that are going on in our nation and the tragedies related to that in fact here in Colorado Springs home of the boundless show we have actually been named as one of if not the highest prevalence the location with the highest prevalence of teen suicide and so it's been very close to home for us well it got us to thinking about tragedy and loss in general and when you are walking through whether it's a friend or a family member suicide whether you have lost a relationship maybe because of lifestyle choices or just someone who has drifted away or you've lost someone to death in another way we're going to actually talk about that here we're going to we're going to jump into this conversation in fact it's also as this show releases Are you Ok day which is encouraging people to kind of step into the lives of our friends who may be really struggling with thoughts of self harm or other issues going on in their lives and we should be there as specially as the church especially as believers to be willing to answer those questions so along that same theme we're actually going to break it down here on the round table with a few folks I have Alice Melinda and Caleb here hey. You guys Ok All right we're going to talk about experiencing a loss and this could be on any level we have different experiences represented here I just want to open it up by kind of talking generally around if you look you know back maybe. Ok well Caleb's kind of young I was going to say look back 20 years. Now but I mean look back to some point in your life when you felt you know you had definite ideas of like how life was going to play out what this was like you know related to relationships related to family future all of that did you have would you say you were idealistic I mean do you think that where you are now in your understanding of the realities of life has truly shifted or been informed by experiences you've had talk about the van and then now a little bit. Yeah so I guess looking back in life. I guess not 20 years one of my go back like 10. Thinking like you know there's hard stuff in my gut experiencing loss in that sense I was taught you know ticks experience like one quick thing and like one hard thing in life we're going to be good but then as you keep going on there's more and more difficult things that keep building up and there's always going to be that suffering and that was. And it feels like it ever really stops so you I guess younger me would think oh yeah there's going to be one big thing and then you know you're kind of going to keep moving on but one and you're through that and God's going to reward you by ease and comfort Yeah Ok so yeah but never happens so Ok now we know. How about you 20 years ago I was looking for that fairy tale. I just wanted to be married have a family you know be heavily involved in our church have the white picket fence I did have a white picket fence but. It was short lived due to my husband's suicide. And how long had you been married we had been we had just celebrated 10 years Wow Ok and that was how long ago now it was 7 years June 3rd this year Ok 7 years ago which is like nothing I mean that's sometimes it seems like it was just a few weeks ago Yeah yeah exactly Alice about you 20 years ago I was busy right well raising. 2 children my son had just died 3 years prior and we were just getting ready for. We were a few years away from my daughter coming out as homosexual so 2 great losses but. Very unique in each one and being a new believer I didn't know what to expect as. Far as one and done so for me it's a little different than Caleb and I felt that my past brought this on because I hadn't really much heard yet in my relationship with God and to speak to Melinda's point 23 years of one loss it can stop you like a dime and you are back there how in light of that talk a little bit about how those losses affected you and how were they the same and how were they different How did you have to walk through those and then talk a little bit about those because I think that is very real those feelings of being to blame for that no god must be punishing me other people I know aren't going through this definitely when my son died I had been a believer 3 months and so I thought Ok this is how life goes I was cynical and because of things in my past I figured God had to hurt me break me and then we were even and I could move on. And. With my daughter that just caught me out of left field it actually came via text message and then it was compounded with I had was further along in my walk she knew how strong I was in my relationship with God but I was the bad person because I was a Christian therefore I must hate her so we immediately became. Just adversaries and our relationship which was good as good as a teenage daughter can be with the mom just stopped and everything was my fault in her life and I have now lost a 2nd child if you will and then also the dreams that I had for being a mom of a daughter the white wedding if you will of the grandchildren and we can talk about all that because there's so much and even Facebook is another component watching your friends celebrate these milestones as with other losses that happen in your life anniversaries you know for Melinda and others Yeah you know well and it seems like now I mean it when more. And more people have access to our lives whether that's in what I would consider legit ways like you know if you're inside a whole group at church where we are to be the Body of Christ one another being community but by nature of that if you're going to get something out of it you've got to be vulnerable and you've got to be willing to say you know yeah things aren't always that great but by having other people in our lives and I know Caleb you've walked through even with friends in your own community and stuff you've had to walk through hard stuff being younger yeah it's like the net is spread further and you're kind of walking through other stuff with other people yeah so I guess I'll give a little background. Back home I was a youth group high school youth group leader and this is in February 1 of our students we were in a very close knit community only like 3040 students and but one of our students got really sick unexpectedly and suddenly had passed away within a matter like a week and a half and so that was really really interesting to see just my grieving process of how I handle that but seeing all the students in our entire community and like all the high schoolers just how they handled grieving and how it's different for everybody and like even seeing a lot of our students felt guilty that they weren't grieving the same way of others and so that was a really interesting feel that saying interesting way but it was just really interesting to see. People as different grieving process it is yeah well and how weird to be in a spot where kind of you're in leadership Yeah trying to grieve on your own but also help others and do you guys think that it's so true that as Christians we feel that way like oh my god this expectation of us like we should hand handle grief differently or not have I mean get the whole Well clearly you just need to trust the Lord or or grieve grieve healthfully It's Ok read the books you need to do go to some counselling but then you need to be over this you need to walk forward. Victory or whatever how is that played out for you what has been the expectation or how people treat you for good or for bad once having revealed that you've now had to walk through the situation. Well for me people expect me to get over it and to rejoice because I and my son he was just shy of 3 years old to we know he's in heaven that does not stop the loss the pain that you feel and with my daughter Christians there is that view of well did you not raise her right. If she knew God she wouldn't go this way if you were a better mother but I am blessed to have friends who come alongside and say look we all have free will and we do what we want so there there is an interesting world that I'm caught in with both of them. If you turn it back on them and just be like God is your response of over heart wise you know I'm doing Ok you know whatever I mean it's kind of like clearly God knows what he has the power to do something about it I don't know did you find hollow words or what he has within a couple of months I had a a well meaning friend approach me and he no you need to move on and. I just I just tried to even in my shock I was just trying to extend grace and let them talk they they don't know what to say to you so they will just be flippant with their words and I mean they're well meaning people. But it was it took me by surprise that someone but there's no timeframe there's no timeframe on great grief and you know you need to to walk it out each losses so unique and different and I cannot put my loss and Alice I you know we just walk this journey. And it's so new We've never done it before each relationship is so unique . So yeah yeah. What are some wondered just a follow up on this what are some of the questions you ask yourself when you are one of the things you wrestled with when you knew I mean your husband had taken his life I mean. What did that and not what did that feel like but just what questions did that put in your mind as far as what you had to wrestle with personally Well I will say that besides the loss of my husband I I was grieving the loss of a marriage right from the beginning I realized it was going to be a turbulent relationship it was it was a difficult marriage to the point where I had. People from or. People from my church say that you have every reason to leave this marriage there's no physical abuse it was just more emotional and. But I was committed I was committed to my vow to my husband and to the Lord and so I I just needed to buck up and. So anyway I there was a lot of guilt after he had taken his life but went through counseling went through a program called grief share and that helped helped a great deal I do not take responsibility for his decision and what he has done so but it was a process to get to that point and to not put it on myself blame myself I didn't know like I could be I could have been more attentive to him you know there's always hindsight in every thing then. You know I look at relationships different and just trying to extend Mark Grace and more. This more compassion in the relationship I guess you know. Any other any other thoughts just on how like for people that. Are kind of walking through a season like this right now or maybe you know I I was just talking with with coworkers here and I'm sure all of you know this just the Colorado Springs has been labeled as one of the largest suicide cities especially among teenagers and it's just weird it's like you want to be able to say you know any pattern of of loss or or whether it's destructive behavior self destructive whatever you want to be able to say if you do this this and this or this is what this looks like and then all of a sudden it's just turned on your head oh my goodness no it is white affluent teenagers that are coming in so you just can't you can't put something on it but what what would you say as far as people who are walking through this what are encourage minutes for them as far as what was helpful for you in just grappling with both with God and with others. Feelings of Ok this is not Ok this may never be Ok but I have got to there's something solid here that I'm going to have to hold on to what does that look like. I think for me. There is a sermon by John Piper where he's talking about suffering and loss and. He said some of the effect like it's all purposeful like and it's hard to believe that but I do believe that there is purpose in this super hard time going on in your life like God has a purpose for and you might not see it appears down the road but like there is something in place because God is sovereign and he knows you know what he's doing pretty much you know in my question at the time I can still be sad I can still grief grieve but. You know just holding on to hope that. There is a purpose throughout this time. That there's a reason behind it her example he was within a few months after. The loss I had a friend come up to me her husband had recently. Had lost his his job and he was actually contemplating suicide. But he. He noticed what I was walking through and he did not want that for his wife so the verse. As a man lays down his life for others I have repeatedly you know I think that when I can go in that mindset because even 7 years later there are moments where gosh I wish I could have done this better what if I would have done this on that one particular day or. So the whole purpose behind Yeah there's a reason God is you know he knew it was going to happen so. For me it was trusting God I spent years being angry at him. For my children and one day I was sitting in church recently as a matter of fact and I realized that he trusted me though with this he knew that this was going to happen now how my going to respond to this I call myself a believer I say I want to follow you Jesus thought Ok I never and I flippantly I'm a college membership in a club I never asked for but you know what there are other people who are hurting and I want my promise to God from all of this is to be vulnerable and transparent. Let them see the weakness the pain but also and it took years to get there I could have joy again that I could go to friends daughters weddings that I could go to children's birthday parties but I want them to be encouraged to know that God never stops loving us and before each one of us was born he knew the days just as with my son he knew what was going to happen with my daughter and have hope and if you need to just cried let go and embrace a new normal and that was the best thing for me and I understand that people cannot put me in a box and if I'm we're good with God It's Ok. And to reach out to friends and lean on them and I encourage other people just be there you don't have to say anything just come alongside let me talk about my kids let me grieve what I'm going through and let me just get it out and just let me through it you know. Well I think it's been huge that the 3 of you have been willing to come and talk into microphones on this and I know we have a bus box of Kleenex sitting here we didn't know where this would go but you guys all did just really well and it's their time is so short you know and but it's just for those of you out there we wanted to just put this out there and say you know we are here for you we want to walk with you here at boundless in prayer obviously you know others have gone before you are experiencing loss around you those in your community in your church seek them out and if you are in a situation whether you have gone through a loss whether you are walking through something really hard right now you don't maybe don't even know what it is. You can do a couple of things one pop over to focus on the Family dot com We have got resources there we have referrals we have a number of different questions answered you can start hunting around there but also you can call our number 1800 the letter a and the word family 1800 a family tell the person on the other side of the line exactly what you're going through and they will get you to the right person we have counsellors here we have chaplains here folks who can pray with you and who can get you started even with a an approved unvetted counselor in your area who can kind of really start walking this road with you if you need to get some healing and some help right away so we want you to know that here a focus on the family and on the stud org We're very passionate about that so you guys thank you so much for sharing thanks thank you Lisa. Books as we finish out the show we get to answer one of your questions we have a great one today about a relationship with parents and fortunately we have Marina from our counseling department here a marina Hi Lisa great to have you thanks for weighing in with some wisdom here this is why we're grateful for our counsellors folks All right well this listener says my sister and I are both in our early twenty's and we both have a tough time holding decent conversations with our parents we feel like it's impossible to connect with them at a meaningful level even though we know they care about us and would do anything for us when I call them we talk about the same few things each week work pets and random events I've had deeper conversations with strangers at the airport than I've ever had with my parents it's almost like they're on guard and don't want to share about their personal lives what's a way we could begin to lower that wall initiate more significant meaningful conversation. Well Lisa 1st of all I think it's RINGBACK important to understand the dynamics that have created this problem so think about perhaps culture. You know the generation that the parents are in their personalities or even their life stage that can all play a part in this. Chew ation So a 20 year old adult as your question had mentioned it was 20 year old adult they might be eager to have adult conversations discussing adult subjects their parents however may have a more difficult time relating to their child as an adult they could feel uncomfortable discussing issues such as their personal problems finances or life concerns with their adult child let's talk about maybe what we can do to increase a deeper level of communication a great place to start would be to maybe seek God 1st as Matthew 633 mentions to help with the situation. You also might have heard of Stephen Covey's communication technique of 1st seek 1st to understand and then to be understood so think about what do your parents want to discuss try to ask them maybe a question that would stimulate a deeper level of conversation on a topic of interest to them hear them out before you share how you feel or what you think on the topic. Another technique is self disclosure start with a situation of concern then you can say something like mom was there ever a time when you struggled with this what happened what did you do and then another technique is setting an example so perhaps bring up a topic that you would like to discuss and try to share from your heart not just your head so think about it most communication is what we would call head talk it's impersonal when we start to share our feelings our goals opinions or desires we're moving into heart talk so heart talk conversations tend to lower that wall and initiate more meaningful significant conversations so if you try all this and you still feel like you're not reached. The level of communication that you'd like recognize that you might have to accept that although you wish and pray that it would be better maybe you've done all you can do and now you just need to let go and put it in God's hands also Lisa just to let listeners know that they are welcome to call our focus on the family counsellors if they have a particular situation to discuss for free consultation at 1800 the letter a and the word family. Call Yeah that's really helpful I mean I know I have come into the realization recently that my family also deals at a very surface level and I remember one year being home at Christmas and trying to go deep with my family and I asked the mall's Let's all just go around and share a goal for the new year and it was like people couldn't even answer for several tried to change the subject entirely Finally my sister because she felt bad for me just weighed in with well I'd like to get a new stove but neither are there enough money when a goal is a ridiculous year or so I've realized that all those examples are so great tip for me to lead in it for me to not have huge expectations and to proceed slowly and see what I can do to be a good example and thanks so much for weighing and Oh you're very welcome All right folks well that's it for this week's show we do want to hear from you at editor at Dallas dot org And do remember that our counseling department is available as Marina said at 1800 the letter a and the word family but we will see around at the site and on the blog hopefully this week but until next week I'm Lisa Anderson for the boundless show on the show was a question I will start or goes with. The minor prophets they say big gifts often come in small packages and that certainly is the case with the 12 minor prophets they're called minor because they wrote less but the pack a big punch and the challenge is to live out our faith in everyday life one of the main emphasis of the minor prophets is practical godliness they remind us that faith in God must translate into a life of kindness goodness and righteousness the 1st of the minor profits is Hosea his name means salvation or deliverance he minister to at a time of material peace and prosperity in Israel but spiritually the nation needed salvation his message was his life as he was called to be an illustrated sermon of God's unconditional and undeserved love for people the story of those a it takes place in Chapters $12.00 and $3.00 it is an illustrated sermon of God's love for us Chapters 4 through 14 the balance of the book our commentary one this story of an conditional in undeserved love that takes place at the beginning of the book in summary Hosea was instructed by God to marry an unfaithful wife his marriage their children her infidelity his forgiveness and their reconciliation became a picture of Jehovah's unconditional love grace and mercy toward sinners. Hosea chapter one vs 2 and 3. The Lord said Hosea Israel has betrayed me like an unfaithful wife marry such a woman and have children by her so I married go mare the daughter blame and we had a son. Hosea was to become a picture of the power of love in the tenderness of grace God instructed Hosea to love and marry a prostitute there was Chapter one Verse 2 they did get married and had 3 children versus 3 through 9 of chapter one tells us the 1st son was called Jess Rielle which means God scatters the 2nd was named Lo rule who among meaning no mercy the 3rd was called Law Lo on me meaning not my people. These names are important because the meaning of the names are very significant Indus book we have already seen that Jose is namings salvation or deliverance now after marrying going there their children are named God scatters no mercy and not my people Hosea represents God gold their his immoral wife is a picture of gods and faithful people their 3 children represent the natural consequences of unfaithfulness towards God. Jeffrey else speaks of judgement low rom a speaks of no mercy absence of mercy and not my people. Represents rejection the rejection that results from sin the Bible reminds us the wages of sin is death Romans 623 the names of Hosea in gold marriage children point to this very death. Go mayor betrayed Jose. But God instructed him to lover again Hosea chapter 3 verse one then the Lord said to me go again love a woman who is loved by a lover in his committing adultery just like the love of the Lord for the children of Israel who talk to other gods and love the Rays and cakes of the pagans. Go Mer at this point had broken her vow towards Hosea and yet God told Hosea to love her again imagine his pain imagine the shock of the people who know him and her the law gave Hosea the right to divorce her in fact he could bring charges against her against her and have her stone yet God said Love Again 1st Corinthians 13 tells us that love is patient and kind it bares all things and believes all things and hopes all things it endures all things that section ends with these words Love never fails so God says Hosea love again. And through this love we would see a reversal. The power of love would bring about a reversal because of love the name of the children of this union would be reversed Hosea chapter one verse is 11 through verse one of chapter 2 then the children of Judah and the children of Israel Shelby gather together says the Lord and appoint for themselves one head and they shall come up out of the land for great will be the day of Jazz Rielle say to your brethren my people and your sisters mercy is shown because of love Jeffrey l. Which meant God scatters would become Jeffrey o. God so love God's love with churn low on me. Not my people into my people and the grace and mercy of God which earned law a low Vama no mercy into simply mercy you see the word low in Hebrew l o. Negates whatever comes after and in it means no and it cancels out anything that comes out for it so low who Alma. Me means respectively No no mercy and my people God says I want to change that because of grace because of love I'm going to remove the no and I will make you my people and I will show mercy to you and Jeffrey I'll which is a Hebrew word which means to scatter it can also mean to so you may recall in Matthew 13 about what to do in the parable of the Sower the Bible says that the so are when out sowing seed and the word used there is just scatter scattering seed this is how they win so at that time so God says I'm going to reverse the meaning of the name Jess rail and it will no longer stand for judgment but it will stand for sowing sawing towards a great harvest and mercy no mercy will become mercy and not my people will become my people. Now the ballasts of the book will comment on this powerful story of redemption through love Hosea chapter 4 verses $1.00 and $6.00 hear the word of the Lord you children of Israel for the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land there is no truth of mercy or knowledge of God in the land verse 6 my people are the short for lack of knowledge because you have rejected knowledge I also will reject you from being priests for me because you have forgotten the law of your God I also will forget your children . You know the words God. Tells us here this is the next real consequence of immortality the cause of immorality destruction will follow being forgotten by God will follow naturally but here is my heart the Lord says Hosea Chapter 6 verses 5 through 6 Therefore I have healing for them by the profits I have slain them by the words of my mouth and your judgments are like light that goes forth for I desire mercy and not sacrifice in the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings God is saying because of your conduct you deserve isolation from me and ultimate destruction but that's not what I want I desire mercy and not sacrifice I want knowledge of God and not burnt offerings so I sent prophets and I gave you my word to protect you to direct you to correct you God is merciful he offers mercy he desires mercy he delights in mercy His words are corrective not merely punitive In other words he chest eyes is to restore not to punish his judgments are light that dispel darkness and show the path toward healing and restoration. Here's God's promise in Jose Chapter 10 verse 12. Plough your fields scatter seeds of justice and to have harvest faithfulness worship me the Lord and I will send my saving power down like rain Here's my paraphrase of Hosea 1012 work do it is right cheery see what is good who walk with God to experience His blessings that's what he's saying to them he's calling them back to redemption and reconciliation God. Includes in Hosea chapter 14 verse for the 1st part of the verse he says I will heal their backsliding and I will love them freely color lujah God wants to love you freely that is to love you without boundaries or limitations an ending and unconditional love that's his heart in this love is free because someone already paid the price for it his name is Jesus Christ Jesus satisfied the righteousness of God by taking the wages of my sin and yours on himself he who knew no sin Jesus Christ became sin for us you and me that we might become the right just miss of God in Christ Fallujah now you and I can experience God's boundless love because Jesus paid the price for our sin our failure to live our lives correctly would you accept this offer today would you embrace the love of God and allow Jesus Christ to wash away your sin again Hosea chapter 14 now verse 9. Hoes wise the Lord asks let him understand these things who is prudent let him know them for the ways of the Lord are right the righteous walk in them but transgressors stumble in them. Are you wise or you foolish. Will you accept the ways of the Lord today would you be instructed by the word and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you or will you stumble because of the words I invite each day to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior to accept the forgiveness that is found only in Him interests see the grace and the love of God in you would you pray this prayer with me dear god. Thank you for loving me and thank you for using the story of Hosea who loved a prostitute in forgave her unfaithfulness thank you for using that point of story to help me see the consequences of my own faithfulness. I confessed my sins to you. And I received your love and your grace in the forgiveness and that is found in Jesus Christ I surrender my life to you today and all nice in the name of Jesus Christ and. Charlie Craig and David Moore Phillips explained that baking such a cake would violate his religious convictions against same sex marriage Craig immoral and sued rather the City sued Philips under the Colorado anti discrimination act Philip argues that baking a cake specially for for a professional baker such as himself is a self-expression and he ought not to be forced to express himself in a way that violates his religious conscious his 1st Amendment right of freedom of expression and freedom of religion under other hand Craigan Mullens argued that refusing to bake a cake for them is a form of discrimination the case is called masterpiece cake shop the Colorado civil rights commission similar cases are working their way through the courts involving For instance florists wedding invitation companies and others so the u.s. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case in Settle it none of this so far is new news what is new is the position of the federal government last Thursday the Trump administration filed a Namak is brief a friend of the court opinion siding with the Baker this is a 180 degree turn from the Obama administration in their brief the office of the attorney general in the person of acting Solicitor General Geoffrey b. Walsh wrote quote forcing Phillips to create expression for and participate in a ceremony to violate his sincerely held religious beliefs invades his 1st Amendment rights the a.c.l.u. Is up in arms in this upcoming Scottish term we will see how the Supreme Court decides this issue as for my opinion. I do not think a worker or a private business should be forced by the government to participate in something they find morally objectionable if same sex marriage must be allowed as a form of self-expression then by the same logic in the same rule objectors should be allowed to express their view by not participating in it I'm not implying that every Christian has to come to the same conclusion as the baker but I am saying that the government should not be making up his mind for him I'm Flavio Carvalho and that's my take on this gutless. And this is life in Christ with Pastor Flavio Carvalho not only is it a delight to spend time with Pastor Flavio and God's word but it's also a joy knowing that somebody who can rightly handle the Word of God also rightly handles the land not only is he our pastor here life in Christ Ministry and Elser Ito He is also a lawyer who can handle legal issues as well from a biblical perspective now if you'd like information on either or both we would love to hear from you and we have several ways that you can contact us you can either phone us at 512333383 again that's 512333383 or stop by our website for further information and details at life in Christ Ministry dot au argy You can also write to us Post Office Box 626 else or read oh California the zip code is 94530 now whether it's what we're studying or you have a legal question maybe it's a prayer request or a question totally unrelated to what we're studying but still related to God's word again we would love to hear from you in fact you can either call 512333383 or plan on visiting us especially if you're not involved in.
