When you've blown it when you've made a huge mistake and you're living with regret what you truly need is someone to lift you up dust you off and help you recover but sometimes instead of loyal friends coming to our rescue we often find a few vultures circling overhead pointing out our mistakes and celebrating our demise but today on Insight for living shucks one dog presents another message in the classic series called What If we are opening the Bible to 2nd Samuel to answer the relevant question what if someone kicks you when you're down. Some sims are followed by consequence is though there is forgiveness for any sin. And these consequences are bitter and difficult verse 5 chapter 16 is King David Kay Nuba who Rima man came out of the village cursing then. He threw stones at the King and the king's officers in the by the Warriors Genoa here you murderer he screams from the hold up you get out of here you murderer you scoundrel he shouted at David the Lord's praying you back for all of the bloodshed in Saul of clan. You stole this throne and now the Lord has given it to your son Absalom at last you a taste some of your own medicine now in the group is a man named Abishai you've not met Abishai before quite likely not a well known name in the scriptures though he is introduced back in the 2nd chapter you read of him and his brothers all acquaint you in a moment but Abishai is standing nearby. Look at what I said is verse 9 let me go over and cut off his head. They've his response is a magnanimous some of you heard it read and you probably are still wondering how you could say that so if I can help you. Know the king said don't put the put the NAACP up. And I like his response who ask your opinion you sons of their I. Verse 11 hang on you're going to hear some incredible words from a man who's already low. But at least he's humble David said Abishai and all his servants my own son is trying to kill me meaning Absalom. Done this relative of Saul have even more reason to do so what he means by that is the man is broken his family's been killed in battle they've gone through all kinds of of grievous situations the man is reacting leave him alone let him curse now look at the next line the Lord told him to do it. Perhaps the Lord will see I'm being wrong he knows he's being wronged. And maybe the Lord will bless me because of these curses today. Let me pause here and analyze this a little bit. As I look at David's response. Let me share with you 4 things that I think may be helpful as we think about David versus 10 to 12 1st of all he silenced and restrained any kind of violent retaliation learn to do the same thing we talk about the love of God we talk about the value of loving each other and we get an opportunity to do it and we blow it why. Because we don't have to take this come of stuff actually you do I do there are times we definitely need to take it. But what if it's unfair what if it's unfair so his silence isn't restrained to any kind of violent retaliation 2nd if you're making notes he took the high road. He reminded this out of control loyalist that God is still in control Abishai am a shot how long are we known each other and you still don't realize that God's in control of all of this I'm going through a time of enormous consequences because of Monro knowing. Mother man's method may leave a lot to be desired he wouldn't be there if the Lord didn't permit his being there 3rd David refuses to defend himself. And finally he left justice with the one who could always imperfectly deal injustice and that's God Himself. So David believes that with the Lord. And we read you know you might think because he did that shimmy I finally shot no. David in his man continued down the road shimmy I kept pace with them on a nearby hillside still cursing as it went and throwing stones at David tossing dust into the air I love it would be read he it is me and continued down the road wasn't wearisome look at the last verse the king and all who were with him grew weary along the way of course that's where reason I know you're tired I know it's not clear but when it's time and when the time is right. He'll take charge and not until. So. Let's do a little analysis that I think is worth our consideration a couple of observations Biblically and then for practical suggestions and I'm through here the observations Here's the 1st success and popularity can make you proud. Or it can keep your home. Success and popularity can make you proud or it can keep your humble choose the latter how how powerful was David the most powerful man in the land. How famous he was a house holding everybody knew King David by the way to this day the Israelites no king david they named the flag after it in a Jerusalem after city of David. The star of d.p. We refer to. When you are that famous. You have to deal with a lot of stuff think of the proper Razzi that feed on the celebrities. Member seeing scenes they can't even take a walk they can't even have a private big cation that Katie take their baby out for a stroll without 1015 impudent photographers with their cameras flashing you right in their faces over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. We watch it on the news and we think one just be nice to the photographers never put yourself into celebrity shoes you see that can make you really really mean spirited or in David's case humble George Whitfield was a very well known evangelist in his day matter of fact were ever he when his popularity was the Mets get this jail's will Sanders writes in his book Spiritual Leadership which Whitfield live to grow tired of his popularity. He often envy the man who could enter were restaurant and take his choice of food with no one to think of his presence people who are really well known could rarely eat a meal without being interrupted would feel wearied of being interrupted. But later in his life following is a lustrous career as a whirl renowned evangelist he made the statement I've seen enough of popularity to be sick of it please do not have is one of your goals in life to become known it's not all it's cracked up to be according to authorities like this Charles had the courage and. Writes the dangers of popularity and success were constantly before me. To looking in his work encounters with spurge and includes these words from Spurgeon. Success exposes a man to the pressure of people and tempt him to hold on to his gains by means of fleshly methods and practices success can go to my head and it will unless I remember it is God who accomplishes the work and he can continue to do so without my help he will be able to make out with other means when every cuts me down to size here the humility in that. To one who warned him to be aware of the evils of popularity Spurgeon replied thank you heartily thank you May God reward you for watching over my soul and as to what my enemy say against hit me I know worse things of myself than they could ever say about me I love that response. David could say that I have a shy There are worse things about me than shimmy as even mentioning you see when your humble heart you don't fight back. You learn from it. You submit to the Lord's hand it please notice never once have I used the word easy. It isn't easy the Spirit filled life is a real challenging life. Takes humility and it doesn't run easy for us who are independent by nature. Americans rarely breed to people like that and we are guilty of a lot of American Christianity not Biblical Christianity and no one loves this nation more than I do but we don't get our theology from our nation we get it from our Bibles. Our Bibles never forget that. Secondly I want to observe. Being kicked when you're down can paralyze you or prompt you to keep going. David chose the latter and they continued on to their destination. When you're being kicked. The tendency is to just give it up I am pleased to read the King and all who were with him though they grew weary along the way. They continued on. Me arrested when they got to the destination they didn't allow the harassment is out of control drama on the hillside to deter them or paralyze them and me I mean has you and don't answer out loud obviously you've been kicked you've been stabbed in the back you've been shot if you will by someone who has taken advantage of you and if you're not careful you have to admit you become paralyzed by it. Believe me I've had that happen as well and being paralyzed helps nobody. Continuing on to the place of rest what a model that is you've got to go on so in case I speak to some today who are being kicked while you're down the worst thing you could decide on doing is simply. Taking a. Vacation from life you're still needed you're still filling a role you still have responsibilities you still have appointments along the way you still have your family to to encourage and they also were down because of what you're going through your continuing on is commendable. It may surprise you to know that's the reason a number of ministers leave the ministry my friend David Roper writes in a fine book a burden shared about that Roker writes I often ponder the plight of my friends who were out of the ministry not because of God's call but because of people's criticism disapproval vented from their congregations fell on them like acid rain eroding their will to serve I can understand why they gave up I grieve for them. Sometimes criticism is unfair right Rupert. Were set upon by men and women who have unrealistic expectations of us who do not realize that we too are failures in need of forgiveness or perhaps they have a personal axe to grind and they want to deflect blame away from themselves or they may represent a power block in the church and resent our leadership they criticize us because it makes them feel better about themselves then it gives for comments about criticism that I thought were worth repeating I think this is helpful number one criticism always comes when we least need it isn't interesting how that happens. Second criticism comes when we least deserve it. Often 3rd criticism comes when from people who are least qualified to give it. And Forth that criticism frequently comes in a form that is least helpful to us good word. You can be paralyzed by the attack or you can let it fuel your journey and you continue on walking humbly with your God choose that path now for practical suggestion ask remember realize and find here they are 1st ask God to give you a tougher high. Dr ever 100 in an area where there were thorns you never do that with flip flops. Never saw Hunter wearing flip flops or going barefoot in a 40 area you wear the ficus boots with the heaviest so and even then forwards will come through the so. When you're dealing with Forney people you need a thick high and the world's full of 40 folks. By the way I found a great verse recently that you will love some 119165 Write it down take it by faith you'll love it it's it is shall long wrong great piece of value love by law and nothing will fitted that the Hebrew means nothing will cause them to stumble when you really love the book is yours should it's amazing how thick that'll make your hide stay in this book it'll toughen you up. Don't be sensitive. What do you mean by. The watch inside. Gonna Hurt for oh really. We've all been shot. And I've got to give you a tougher hide Number 2 remember that God. Is fully aware and engaged you even though he's silent at the moment David says The Lord has told the Lord has is involved in this the Lord is there he's very aware of the Lord's presence it's easy to forget that when you're being attacked and people taking advantage of you remember this by the way God is not almost sovereign. There's no such thing God isn't Gage because he's sovereign number 3 rely. Rely on God's Grace to make things right perhaps the Lord will will look at what's happening and we will bring relief remember they've its words I'm being wronged and perhaps the Lord will bless me because of the curses today that's a that's thinking with Greece. Rely on God's grace when you deal with people like this. There with him and grace. Reach out and grace the storm increases increase the grace. And here's the flipside Number 4 find comfort by resting in God's mercy God's mercy. Grace is reaching out to someone who doesn't deserve it and giving them what they don't deserve mercy is God's ministry to the miserable you take mercy. Did you realize that in the scriptures there was a reference to the mercy seat sit there. When David got to his destination. He rested how. Mercy. You need mercy when you're dealing with the flack. Years and years ago when I was just a teenager my older brother Orville whom most of you have never met unfortunately was going through a very difficult painful time I can't remember what the difficulty was. But it was with tears that he said down at the piano which he played beautifully. And he said to be Charles I want you to hear the words of a song a hidden written a long time ago I want you to hear it enough to where you and I sing it together it's like it happened yesterday so I listen. Come you just consulate where you languish come to the mercy seat for event Li needle. Here bring your wounded heart to hear tell your anguish. Earth has no sorrow. That Heaven cannot heal but you lot. Are there's no sorrow that heaven cannot heal. David set down and rested and was healed from the mercy of God we have our with me peace. Today I invite all of you who are disconsolately and it's an old word for depressed. All of you who languish all of you who are being beaten up. Hurt by some shitty I. And bite you to the mercy seat. Fervently needle bring your wounded heart tell God all your anguish and remember Earth has no sorrow Heaven cannot heal. Father. We are all it needed but healing. Some carry deep scars others are still lacerated and bleeding. Some are doing their best to go on they can't seem to find a place of rest some can even sleep. Remind us Father that you have a place forests for every stormy wind that blows from every swelling tide. Of woes there is a calm assured retreat to sound beneath the mercy seat and so today Lord do we come. In we rest with you we leave our case with you we lay down our arms. We silence all the Abishai is in our life. And we step back and wait on you to work in your way. At your time. In the name of Jesus we caught. Everyone's. A bit. You see sometimes we look at forgiveness as a gentle and mild gesture of charity it's a sweet little thing we do for reprobates because the Bible commands us to do that but that my friend is a shallow and twisted misunderstanding of biblical forgiveness listen carefully forgiveness requires far more than offering our offender a pious pat on the head now listen even more carefully when we withhold mercy from someone else when we insist on licking our wounds when we allow our self righteous anger to simmer beneath the surface we actually do damage to our own soul now how do I know that's true over in Matthew Chapter 18 Jesus said that those who fail to forgive are actually and I quote turned over to the torturers in this one dollar vernacular let me put it this way indulging our resentment yields a hellish outcome in a moment we'll describe how you could receive 2 messages I have delivered on this very important topic and I'm urging you to listen to these studies in Matthew because Jesus' teaching will liberate you from the bondage of bitterness and in the 2nd message you will hear my wife Cynthia share the biblical principle of forgiveness that brought healing to a broken relationship in her own life that healing forgiveness can be yours as well are you ready to make peace and restore your soul. In 1st Corinthians chapter 11 the Apostle Paul writes that every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head. How are we to understand that passage today was this command relevant because of the cultural context of the ancient church or does it still carry weight for us that's the question we'll address today on truth for life with Allister beg. Why does Paul want women to adorn themselves in a ceratin way why is he so concerned about this covering. And anticipating our next question is there really any use bending time thinking about it tonight when it is so far away from Cleveland and so long ago in history. When I think you'll agree before we conclude the answer is yes question where does the dishonor occur every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. Now we've just been told that the head of Christ is God and the head of every man is Christ so when it says that if he prays in this way he dishonors his head does it mean that he dishonors Christ or does it mean that he dishonors himself. And when a woman does it wrongly and it says that does she dishonors her head does it mean that she dishonors man and specifically her husband or that she dishonor self Well we can argue all night about that I think that perhaps we could say that in the same way as the Book of Proverbs tells us that when a child rebels against his parents he brings grief both on himself and on his parents that when men and women get this wrong the dishonor themselves and inevitably the dishonor Christ and the one under whom they live in submission now something that we haven't mentioned yet is very important the context of this has to do with the praying and the prophesied every man who prays or prophesies and then every woman who prays or prophesied us. And we've got a bit of a problem here don't we. What are these women doing praying and prophesied. Because after all we're going to find out in chapter 14 and verse 34. That as in all the congregations of the saints women should remain silent in the churches they are not allowed to speak but must be in submission as the law says if they want to inquire about something they should ask their own husbands at home for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. So what do we know. One the Holy Spirit does not contradict himself. To Paul is not about to contradict himself in the space of 3 chapters. So there's got to be an explanation. Possible explanation that what he's referring to here in terms of praying and prophesied is different from the kind of speaking to which he's referring in chapter 14. I don't really particularly like that one. Perhaps what he's referring to in Chapter 11 is a different context and that this has to do as a number of commentators says that what he's referring to here is what happens when a woman is out in the public 3rd affairs of life what she's doing when she's witnessing what she's doing in a different context but not what she's doing within the church so that the reason he says this year and 11 and says something different in 14 is because he's referring to 2 very different contexts. 3rd possibility is this that he's taking one thing at a time. That at the moment what he's clearing up is a problem about authority in relationship to a woman's disregard for the jurisdiction of man over her he takes it for granted that in the context that he's addressing men are praying improv a sign women are praying and prophesying he's going to get to that but at the moment what he's dealing with is the way in which a woman's submission to authority is manifest in the context of her day. Now you can choose whichever interpretation you like. We can say with certainty the only thing we can say with certainty is that he meant what he said in Chapter 11 he meant what he said in chapter 14 we can play fast and loose with either of them and the Holy Spirit never contradicts himself. Ok that is in some ways an aside but we've got to deal with it so let's understand why the head covering business is so crucial. The man does honor to his head he says by declaring his independence under Christ and the woman does honor by showing that she's under subjection. That's why the the issue is important it's not so much what goes on her head as what's going on inside her head. Is not so much the physical dimension of it as it is expressive of a whole response to a god or deigned pattern of authority it hits at the very root of what a woman is and what a man has been programmed to be and when a woman react unfavorably as they were doing to core in Corinth to the responsibilities expressed in her day of making it clear before the church and before the watching world that she understood God's pattern God is over Christ Christ is over man and man is over woman and whether she wore something on her head or not was expressive of whether she believed that and was prepared to live it out that's why it's so important and that's why he drives it home now having made that so very very clear in verses 3 to 10 in verse 11 and 12 he slips these in in much the same way as we find in 1st Peter 37 where he speaks about man and women being joined errors of the great salvation that is ours in Christ after Peter has just taken 6 verses to establish the primacy and authority over of a man over his wife he then says in verse 7 but don't forget the fact that this man . This woman are joint heirs with Christ but their union in that way in no way negates the the separation that God is intended within the structure of the home and Paul does the same thing. He says listen in the Lord it over man is not independent woman is not independent of man nor for that matter this man independent of woman for his woman came from man he says in creation so also man is born of woman and everything comes from God The males have a peculiar role to play in headship and they along with the women are to be bound together in mutual goodwill because one can get on without the other and I think this is Calvin says let them be tied to each other by this bond of mutual service. So if we're tempted and some people do this to us to take verses 3 to 10 and to use them in and out of balance kind of way to teach some kind of broad beating male domination we should avoid that very carefully in fight vehemently. But by the same token if somebody wants to take Vera says 11 and 12 to set aside the instruction of Varus is 3 to 10. We should oppose that with equal vehemence because verses 3 to 10 taken with arses 11 and 12 provide the beautiful combination. Of equality. And the responsibilities of role relationships between men and women. Now it's appropriate that when we come to verse 13 Paul calls for his readers to think these things out Judge for yourselves he says Think it out but that brings us to our final question How then does this apply to our situation today. What is verse 14 saying. Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long here it is a disgrace to him but that if a woman has long here it is her glory. His Paul simply seeing that human tradition and customs throughout all of history have made a distinction between the hair length of men and women. In fact I think of the King James Version is it does not nature itself which. I like this translation does not the very nature of things teach the Fuscus the essential elements of sexuality he says Do not the things that God has marked into men and women from the very order of creation do not these elements of sexuality teach you the very in assessing the of distinguishing between the sexes doesn't it teach you that in light of that we must be very very careful. About embracing anything that would obscure the distinctions that God is intended in the very nature of his creative order I think what he's referring to here is what he refers to in the opening chapter of Romans in verse 26 because of this God give them over to shameful lusts and even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones the very nature of humanity says that it is on natural by God's creative order for women to be involved as husband and wife within a same sex relationship the very nature of God's creative handiwork says the same about men involved in homosexual relationships and so a policy is by the very nature of things it ought to be clear to us that we have instincts within us that we have if you like psychological perceptions the bear testimony to our masculinity and to our femininity these psychological perceptions these basic instincts will express themselves in different cultures in different ways but they are true for all of time and in every culture it is God's purpose from all of time that as surely as God rules over Christ in terms of Christ submission and as surely as Christ rules over man that man has a role of edge ship above. Women and one of the ways in which this psychological basic essential natural element of our lives will reveal itself is for women to of long hair and for men to have short hair now the the length of their hair and watch long and what short and glory almost what not we can discuss for a long long time what are you seeing again and the main thing the plain thing is this you're not supposed to display before the church a rebellious anti chewed towards your husband and you are not supposed to display before the church I coude telling attitude towards your wife and the way in which that was expressed in the Corinthian context had all to do with this issue of what was being worn on their heads. Now we've already said that we don't know if it was here or we don't know if it was shown us but that's not even that significant it was significant for them because they're here indicated something or the covering indicated something and what it indicated was that this woman was happy to abide by the law of nature. And so in vs 13 to 15 Paul declares that by the wearing of a head covering the woman shorter self to be in keeping with the God given distinctives between the sexes. Now he says if anyone wants to be contentious about this we don't have any other practice nor do the churches of God we don't do this any different in any other place he says Well then what is the application here we are tonight in Cleveland where a long way historically in geographically from Corinth. Is the application of this to teach that women ought to return to wearing coverings or veils. No. No. Because we need to distinguish between the principle which is timeless and the application in a specific culture which will vary. You only need to think about this in kind of missionary terms to realize how absurd a preoccupation with a head covering things would be think of missionary work and some of the aspects of the African continent where women don't even wear any clothes at all except a tiny little something or another every so often are we going to go in there and teach 1st Corinthians 11 and tell them that there's a voice to walk around nude with their head with their hair piled up on top of their head or they're supposed to wear I schall over their heads it's an absurd idea what would we teach them we would teach them the principle that is being taught here the headship of God over Christ of Christ over man and of man over woman we would teach them that psychologically instinctively basically in them is an understanding of femininity and of masculinity and we would then in relationship to their culture make sure that no woman understanding this would do anything within her culture which would lead her culture to assume that she rejected either her femininity or her submission under God to her husband and actually to. Understand So the principle is timeless and the instinctive element within us is timeless and the cultural accretion or application were very Secondly where such signs are lacking in our culture we should be boldly distinctive in upholding distinctive elements of the difference between masculinity and femininity in other words where our culture has blended the genders as has ours where a kind of a drug and his approach to things is expressed so that you're left saying what is this. The Christian must never be found in that department if the wearing of earrings by a man is an indication of femininity then they should not be war whatever it might be if a special kind of here is this explosive of masculinity Then the lady ought to set it aside. Now the reason that Paul was concerned about all of this and the reason we should be concerned tonight is because head coverings or the absence of head coverings send a message see so you come to the congregation and here's Fred and he's got a shawl on his head you say to yourself What in the world happened to him when and where are shawls on their heads. What's frets problem. Or you come into the context and here's a lady with her hair swaying in the breeze instead of up in the Bonn or are it sure until they did to the Sinead O'Connor style and she's got nothing overhead we're seeing what happened to her doesn't she believe that she came from Matt doesn't she believe that she has a subordinate role. Now you see the Caird coverings said something in that culture today what you've got on your head says precious little of anything I mean I really make comments about whether we like your hairstyle but beyond that we can see much so for me to say to you now what you're supposed to do is you go out and get all but go buy a bunch of shawls and pull them over your head what no world would be the point of the day. It would miss the point. But the principle is timeless the instinctive psychological element is timeless of masculinity and femininity and the cultural expression varies. Let me say this in conclusion I believe this is remarkably appropriate for our generation 1st of all in relationship to the whole question of role relationships between men and women let the whole culture say what it likes this is what God says we are then to make sure that we dress our children in such a way as to uphold the distinction between the sexes. There is little doubt that there is a direct link between femininity and the proper submission of women to men. Masculine women. Do not submit readily to men. And feminine men who rarely if ever express adequate headship over women. The women in Corinth who prophesied without coverings were sending a signal and they knew it. We no longer submit to male authority that's what they were saying and that's why it was so important the issue was not what was on their head the issue was what they were seeing by leaving it off their head. And so we speak to a culture today where the advance of women to on biblical positions of leadership and the absence of man from true leadership simply paves the way to chaos. I don't the is any accident the Paul addresses the issues of feminine adornment and submission to male leadership in the same passage. I recognise how revolutionary this sounds I can hear myself with my own ears it flies in the face of our culture a surely as it did in the face of the Corinthian context. By loved ones the makers instructions are perfect. And the road that has led to the embracing and indorsing and baptising into orthodoxy of homo sexual lifestyles. Began with a tiny tributary high up in a mountainside. Where people began to say that's not really significant. It doesn't matter if boys play baseball and girls play baseball. And in that tributary and from that tree. The theory and from the tributaries we're creating tonight in this church will flow. The next generation. It's a crisis of a b.d.s. It's a crisis of authority. The authority is God's versus ours. It must be God who rule us the principle is timeless The natural instinct is timeless and the cultural expression is variable therefore what should we do we should seek to ensure that in our homes and in our offices and in our church. The principle that is taught from all of creation. Should be affirmed for the glory of God. For the glory of man. And for the glory of woman there can be no glory attached to any part of that Trinity except by a ruthless careful obedience to the principles of this book. Government after nearly 6 months in office they could decide to pivot from health care to racking up small victories and awaiting reinforcements from the $2800.00 or they could go for a big deal with Democrats it's a tough choice for Ryan McConnell but I'm hoping for the latter putting off fixing the disaster that is Obamacare is risky No not impossible if Republicans score enough small victories between now and November 28th and it may be possible to hold both houses of the Congress much when 18 prospects look bad for both parties the g.o.p.
