Told of you know math anyway we're trying to figure out how to balance all that and what a great problem to have what an embarrassment of riches and with Tiger Woods it was such a great moment we'll get more into it it was such a great moment because Tiger Woods is known commodity in the world of sports right Tiger Woods is one of the few people that we can look at and say without a shadow of a doubt they're one of the greatest to ever do what they've done Tiger Woods. Tom Brady we've got these singular greats that we know we can count on but Tiger Woods had fallen down it'd been 800 days. And changed since he had gotten his last p.g.a. Win and we'd see them knocking on the door we'd seen 6 top 10 finishes through the season we'd seen all these things pop up but we hadn't quite gotten that moment and now we've got what we're looking for and now I wonder if we'll really be better for having it in the long run but we'll ask that question later because I have a more pressing question of the other thing we're talking about watching an n.f.l. Sunday yesterday and we're 3 weeks into the season now we've got Monday Night Football coming up tonight we'll get the cap on that one the Steelers and the Buccaneers as we see one of the most exciting often says in sports take the field and I'm not talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers that is the perfect summary of where we're at this n.f.l. Right now I feel like we got a bunch of Baltimore's like a bunch of teams that we didn't expect you know what actually the perfect team for this quite frankly is the Cincinnati Bengals we got a bunch of bangles we got teams the got names that we know we have a.j. Green We have Andy Dalton We have the emergence of Joe mix and we've got great defensive players a great deal line in that group Geno Adkins Carlos Dunlap you got a bunch of names that you know stuff you're familiar with the brand you can trust and Marvin Lewis is not going to win anything past the month of December. We know all that we see them doing well we see him starting to a one it feels like it's going well. We don't really trust it we had a budget since Baltimore's right now I mean how you look at what happened yesterday what went on yesterday and we got to ask the question I never thought I would hear of all the things you thought I was going to ask you this morning of all the things I thought I was going to come here and talk about this morning the one question I did not imagine was going to be asked was to Kirk Cousins and I didn't imagine the question was going to be what went wrong 1st as the Buffalo Bills what happened the other person or what happened I could be talking up here for a while but. What are we supposed to do with that we thought we knew what the Vikings were we were with this game was an afterthought on the weekend this game was about us roasting Buffalo Bills and their Twitter account for putting the wrong Minnesota on the map when they traveled which Bravo by the bills for coming back at all that's why people rock with the bills Mafia because they took it only beat the Vikings and then had the gall to tweet in the back and good thing we found the right Minnesota . All you can do is to pure cat but that's where we're at in this n.f.l. Season where there are very few brands you can trust like you even look on the top and right now you look at what we had happened yesterday the Patriots lost last night and Sunday Night Football to the Detroit Lions they're one and 2 and in a 3 way tie for last in the a.f.c. East right now of course and all that dough Bella Jack remains on stays unfazed and continues to spit cliches at us with an unrelenting force of so there's multiple times I'll say they're ready to do everything for. Their 1st ever that's a giver in all 3 phases of the game. So when you are ready it's the answers all the signs are there. So we've got that which is at least consistent if not troubling an unusual one into you at the n.f.c. South Thunderdome that's all gas no brakes defense is optional on that one we'll see that on display again let tonight speak of the a have seized the Dolphins or 3 you know does anyone feel good about that Ryan Tannehill comeback his record as a starter for the Dolphins seems staggering it seems all tied to this one guy to the point where I'm not sure we should be taking this more seriously but when you start the we season with wins over the Tennessee Titans the Jets and the Raiders you can understand why we're all kind of going to wait and see still they get the New England Patriots at New England next week and one that I think will be extremely telling for both sides through the early portion of the season I say all this is a means to say that there are really I think 2 teams right now that you can trust in the n f l. I think you can trust the Los Angeles Rams and what they've put on tape so far they get a big win yesterday in the battle for Los Angeles over the charge meant did anyone else kind of want the Chargers to get a win I just feel like they've been such the afterthought in this whole move back to Los Angeles everyone says they see just stayed in San Diego I Maybe it's because I like Philip Rivers and end up picking him for all my Philip Rivers is the one player every year that's on all my fantasy teams I just get to that point the draft and I'm like that's a value pick that guy's going to throw for a 1000000 yards every year Keenan Allen's finally healthy Mike Williams could be the comeback player of the year I don't think he technically missed all last season with injury but hell we knew what was going on is that guy's a stud I kind of want of this for the charge but the Rams went out there and did what they did which is being the most balanced team in professional football Jared Goff who last year everyone's talk was always good and Sean that vein is headset for the entire game going up to the line they've got this defense they've got it all Jared Goff is making legitimately impressive throws That's an office that Holmes in every direction and has a defense that was able to match yesterday the only thing that could stop the Los Angeles Rams yesterday was someone apparently playing funny visit with the fire alarm for us we've really got 5 up on game day so those guys are forced into it like counties has some position flex and hopefully that's not a real fire alarm force right there so. The heat of the Los Angeles Rams performance clearly driving everyone out of that building but Sean McVeigh right there gets to sort of laugh about that this team damn good and they know it all the Aussies a move that they made pushing into the center of the table and keep believing Marcus Peters both left the game early with small injuries that they don't believe are going to be serious long term. Number one the Browns said they were going to try to trade Josh Gordon into they didn't say but it was reported they wanted to trade him to the n.f.c. Well the tenor changed if he can't get a good offer right you get the best model for your team but there is a certain do not trade list if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers you can imagine you trade him to a team in the a.f.c. North or one that you might view as a legitimate competition in let's just say that like that the Jaguars could afford you know turning to Jack right if the Patriots could be cast based on the trade for Libya you don't trade him to the Patriots or the Chiefs if they said that we don't have enough evidence of horsepower let's add even Let's average 50 points a game as opposed to $38.00 points again but it's a fantastic our it's a phonetic fascinating story in I think it sort of reflective of where Pittsburgh field is going with the lady on Belle 1st and last Michael Jr here on e.s.p.n. Feels all that up and said levy on his due 11980000 for the rest of the season as things currently stand the teams that have 12 plus 1000000 in cap space for the Browns the Colts the Texans the Titans the Cowboys the Niners the Jets and the Jaguars Now you look at that list that say right off the bat there are 3 teams that absolutely should push for this and one probably more than most probably the Colts the Niners and the Jets because when you look at teams for the Colts in the 40 niners that are trying to continue surround their young quarterbacks with weapons I know you just signed Jarrett McCann in San Francisco but understand when you can make an upgrade when you've got the dollars to do it and when you should do it that seems like an obvious answer for jets and really maybe you could throw the Browns in that situation although the Browns and the Jets I think have the benefit of time in these spots because you've got Ricky quarterbacks on rookie deals. Which affords you the ability to sign players like this but also gives you time to develop them and in Cleveland you've drafted young running backs you brought Carlos Hyde over certainly but you also got Nick Charles Young running back also want to Ricky contract we know how valuable youth is at those position potentially could watch it together the Jets are interesting but I think the Colts because you understand the clock is still ticking with Andrew Luck in all of this and so this leads to the bigger point which is when you look at this in totality with what happened with Callil Mack this offseason with Aaron Donald holding out and getting his money OTOH back in Junior getting his money what we're seeing with Earl Thomas right now and the weird trade not trade not tampering talks maybe or maybe not happening after the game with coaches but Earl Thomas not practicing twice this week because he said he wants his body to be healthy he's not being invested in by this team and so he's going to do what he believes is right for him and still show up and have 2 interceptions and visit all coming off the heels of Kirk Cousins betting on himself for multiple years and getting the 1st fully guaranteed contract in the n.f.l. Are we watching players finally realize on the top and how much power they have to create change to say if I'm not going to be valued and respected in this spot I'm not going to step back on the field I'm going to dictate the terms until my needs are met and is this something that in the midst of all these rule changes and everything else that management the n.f.l. Should be the most worried about as we get towards another c b a having to be discussed in a couple of years is this the most pressing issue for that side the players finally realizing there are spots that we have power. Certainly we can talk about erasures who's the driving force behind his rule change and what have won him at the bar last year. But yesterday we got the reminder and we shouldn't need it but we got it when Jimmy grew up a low fail to get out of bounds yesterday turned back and planted on that me in a way that now the 40 niners fears lead to a torn a.c.l. You're reminded why we protect the quarterbacks because I saw that happen and in my head I felt 2 things that one I felt bad for Jimmy Gropple And number 2 I felt like now I can put the 40 niners away for the season like now there's nothing interesting there at this point that's not a knock c.j. Better is going to take over the back of quarterback I'm sure this isn't the way he drew it up but now he gets an opportunity for the rest of us that team was already going to be average at best this season had a chance to markedly improved from last year but we still knew that was going to go as far as Jimmy Gropple went and now we don't get that the season so that's why you're protecting the quarterback because you go from talked about with a young star quarterback who has been as hot as any in the league over the last 2 years based on that 6 game stretch where he didn't lose a game last season. To now the 40 niners being an afterthought in a division that already seems like it's one above the rest of the fray and that one the Rams were above the fray in the rest of the n.f.l. . Now you've got to deal with on one side so that's why you do it but it's gone too far and if the n.f.l. Doesn't do something to change this soon they're going to have a problem that's going to not only drive their players against them and when you have the players and when you have former players in the media who end up being vocally opposed to what's going on invites everyone else your fan base to criticize is a fan base who already wants big hits that you're taking away and for good reason in these spots and that's why you've got to give wins. And this is one of those spots Clay Matthews yesterday when asked to get it you can hear the frustration mounting for Clay Matthews about what he's supposed to do in situations like the one where he gets a hit on Alex Smith yesterday that he believes is well within his right as a defensive player that gets flagged yet again when you have a football player in. The game you know. Differently because. You know. Somebody without any hands. But you know I think we're looking for the hits you know. You know that. I wanted to hurt him. But you know that's football. You know. I think a lot of people don't like you know. First of last year on e.s.p.n. Radio. Everyone tries to avoid in sports right the last thing you want to have challenged is that to be called soft The last thing you want on earth. But with the n.f.l. And this is what I'm saying your problem is when you invite this sort of criticism from within because I think for the most part you had players receptive We heard Dan Miller talking earlier this season saying he understands why this rule is in place we've heard coaches that have been understanding of working through the process of fine tuning the lowering the helmet rule you had people on the inside willing to be n.f.l. Team here and gave us the presentation here at e.s.p.n. Gave it to other outlets the same presentation that the players were getting on these roles to try and offer and foster some understanding but when you go out in instances where we all look at this a lot like the can't truly you just revisit it and fixed to give us more of all right we know a catch when we see it we also know hits that are meant to be destructive play Matthew said it at one point if he had wanted to try and hurt him on that play he could of any one of but they're not and we've seen all these instances where guys are already pulling up you've got a reward that you've got to reward guys who are trying to do the right thing in all this because that's what the n.f.l. Is trying to do is the right thing by protecting players' heads by protecting quarterbacks they're trying to do right by the product but when you do this when you hold on to something that I think we can all look at and agree isn't the problem you're trying to address you invite players like Clay Matthews to get upset quarterbacks like Alex Smith to agree with them and pundits like my dad my Gold senior who here on golden window a former n.f.l. Defensive lineman a guy who helps drive the conversation around your league and when you've got the people inside in this obsession these guys are listening to you and f.l. They're listening they're putting their hands out they're not driving into the guy they're following your stinking rules and you're still fall in this thing confined . The average fan who's listening and I have to imagine all of us feel this way because I'm a fan of the n.f.l. Like everyone else when you're a fan sitting there and you're already feeling kind of sour about this it's already taking some of the big hits you away but well I'm trying to be understanding and say you know what I want play I want safety for these players I want to treat these guys not just as commodities but it people understand that their bodies are going through a lot of the stress but when you see that and players are the ones getting angry and former players and members of the media are the ones doing that it invites the rest of us to all criticize it invites everyone else to be critical of the n.f.l. Brand of the product and that's the last thing you want in a time where everything else seems to be going so well that for the 1st time in years for the n.f.l. The conversation is around football almost soly there's no lawsuit hanging over well I should say there's no lawsuit there is a collusion lawsuit out there but one that has been much less prominently measured there's been much less conversation surrounding protest in the n.f.l. Right now if you're the league looking at this vantage point there hasn't been a dispute with a Tom Brady within his eagle Elliot hanging over you this season don't let this be the thing when from everyone's vantage point it seems so avoidable.
