And I did the name Grantland Rice holds a special place in fact my father Dick chap was a Grantland Rice scholarship winner at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and I was practically forced a young age to memorize he's famous Notre Dame lead outlined against blue grass over sky the 4 Horsemen road again in dramatic lore they were known as stand in pestilence destruction and death these are only aliases their real names are still Dreyer Miller Crowley and Laden and I know it's not that impressive on radio because I could be reading it but trust me I'm not and we're joined by one of the great documentary filmmakers in the business whose new film is about the legendary Grantland Rice can be seen Tuesday night at 9 pm on the f.c.c. Network by Grantland Rice directed by Joe Levine who joins us now are you impressed Joe that I did I know the lead I mean it one time it seems like everybody in the business did know it by heart but it's not the same anymore yeah it was almost like required memorization everyone had to know the key video for a horseman article so yeah I haven't read thank you thank you and I didn't find out until much later although I'm sure you're aware of those that Elmer late in was Frank Layton's uncle Yeah you are you are not stuff along the way you know I did know that for people today I think it's almost impossible to convey especially in the age of the vanishing newspaper sports section some are hanging on but many of the jobs are vanishing over the course last 15 or 20 years almost impossible to convey the pallor and the ubiquity and the importance of Grantland Rice in the golden age of sports but I'm going to ask you to try to do so in this limited format show you know question 1st of all which I have to know and have to be able to digest is the fact that there was no radio at that time there was no television there was no other place that you were getting your information from radio does start in the 20. But it was you know fairly limited in the beginning of course television doesn't start till much later so there were these writers who were really the message Bringers I mean those were the guys that were telling the country about the Babe Ruth and the bill till the end and you know some of the other greats of that era that Dempsey v.o.a. You just mentioned the 4 horsemen So it was really coming from the newspapers and another thing that I found so interesting early on when you're learning about this is a city like like New York I don't know by the time Rice gets here 15 different newspapers so you know newspaper was the way that people found out about sports and of course all their news and it was people like Grantland Rice and Grantland Rice was one of the biggest because not only is he writing in New York at by this time of the golden era he becomes syndicated and that's what's so important and that's how he became so big was because though he was writing in New York City he was being read everywhere across the country so there there is how Grantland Rice explodes to become one of the biggest names and in turn because he's so big and everyone you know wants to get their name in the paper everyone from Ruth on down they're friendly with rice they're giving rice access so he really does have an inside look at all these great athletes of that era we're speaking with Joe Levine about his new film by Grantland Rice again he's debuting Tuesday night at 9 pm Eastern on the network and you know what I think of the Grantland Rice Europe and that prose which which is in some ways these days easily lampoon or parody but again there's a reason why it's undying why we're still quoting it almost 100 years after it was written as a craftsman as somebody on deadline writing in these. Amps press boxes on ancient typewriters Olo he probably dictated a lot he scratched how much how much work he put into perfecting that style and mastering that style Well I think he wrote an incredible amount he did would do 678 columns a week and that was in addition to at times covering the event so when he would go to a boxing match he would have to cover the event itself you know give you what happened in the fight and then that was what was called an overnight piece so there would be a companion piece that maybe would take a step back and give you a different perspective so he's writing so much that I just think he naturally kept haunting his craft that way he was turning out so much material and it's interesting to look at the the length of these pieces. I think the Notre Dame article I'm going to guess I'm going to say it's somewhere around 3000 words 324000 words which is a lot and you look at a USA Today article you know that I'll talk about a football game and it's probably 300 words so that that just goes to show you know how my how long these pieces were on and you know in having to do 2 and a night at I couldn't imagine having to turn out something like that and it was regular for him my name and some of the people that he was also writing with having to write that much with a great talent someone to whom just about everybody in the business owes a debt of gratitude to having as Joe Levy tells us created the sports journalism industry he's the subject Grantland Rice of July Viens new film by Grantland Rice which debuts Tuesday night at 9 o'clock Eastern time on the s.c.c. Network Joe's always to pleasure to have you here on the sporting life in Congratulations on the film Fank Year thanks for having me Jeremy. Coming on the sporting life. But you have done so why do you think you and so many others got it wrong well it's Listen I going back to that point in time and Jerry I don't know if you remember how many people. We doubted Belichick back then in 2000 when you look I remember 4 losing seasons out of 5 in Cleveland and I have to be honest I embraced and took on the role of the angry New Yorker when he walked out on the Jets the way he did I thought he was unworthy of doing that because if you remember Jeremy and I know you do the Jets in 99 at the start of that season were predicted by many to go to the Super Bowl 98 they almost got there and then Vinny Testaverde blows out his Achilles in week one and that was that but pelleted was walking away from a really good team that Parcells was going to leave and by contract he was supposed to take over he had taken a $1000000.00 only on has as a bonus to stay in. Listen I thought time I just did not see him as a worthy candidate for the job in New England obviously and I can tell you in talking to people in the Giants high and I thought of him as one of their greatest all time assistance they loved him as an assistant they thought he was right there with Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry is the greatest assistance they ever had but nobody in that organization believed in Bill Belichick as a head coach in the future they did not think he was going to succeed it's one of the reasons he didn't get the job after Parr cells stepped down and of course everyone in Cleveland felt the same way but part of that column was really just being a New Yorker and saying Are you kidding me pal or you really kid me walking out on this after not only not only the losing Jeremy in Cleveland but the personality and the way he treated many people in my profession I just didn't like that so I was never so wrong in my life I admit that maybe I've written 35024000 columns and that is the worst one when you talk about the opinion expressed and the prediction expressed versus the reality of what happened and I'll live with it I'll own it I'll take it to my grave and I was as wrong as you can be simple as that again makes you my. Better men than I for admitting it we're speaking with the whole Connor of e.s.p.n. About his new biography Bella check the making of the greatest football coach of all time and for New Yorkers of a certain age and you know I or within a few years of each other you know what you're saying rings true you know he was the prototype great assistant coach who when he got his chance in Cleveland couldn't get it done went back to working for Bill Parcells he was the defensive secondary coach on the Patriots team that went to the Super Bowl last Super Bowl 31 against the Packers and then he comes back to the Jets with Parcells and it seems like he'd never be able to emerge from the shadow that enormous shadow of Bill Parr sells and yet he did what do you think it was that did Robert Kraft saw that so few others saw That's a great question Jeremy and I know some of the players that Belichick had on defense under par cells that you know they went to the Super Bowl and lost really went to bat for fellow chick to craft personally and said they believed in him and so that was part of it in Kraft had such a bad relationship with Paar selves that a lot of times he ended up talking to Bela check whether be on team flights or elsewhere when he was feuding with Parcells That was a combustible mix Kraft and Parcells I remember Jim fossil you met the old Giants coach say telling his story that after Parcells ended up with the Jets the stormy departure from the way when Parcells and Bella to end up with the Jets that 1st year fossil with the Giants wins coach of the year he sees Kraft at the owners meeting Kraft comes up gives him a big hug and says and I'm paraphrasing I am so happy that you won coach of the year with Parcells in the same market as you. That year so that's how much Kraft really despised Parcells and the way he walked out. On the New England Patriots but along the way he really because of that relationship with Parcells established a bond with Belichick and I think even though everyone not everyone but a lot of people the league office George Young among them were telling an Art Modell the owner of the Browns telling Kraft this is going to be the biggest mistake of your life don't do it other people sending him clips of Belichick and press conses gone awry in Cleveland don't do it Robert you're going to really regret it then columnist like myself I don't that it had any impact on him obviously it didn't because he made the hire but you have to give Robert Kraft a lot of credit for going forward now I'll say this and I was there that day Jeremy after 911 the 1st n.f.l. Sunday after 911 when the Jets played up there in 2001 Jets win that game Bledsoe gets knocked out by most Lewis Tom Brady trots in at that point my column looked as good as gold Belichick was 5 and 13 in his 1st 18 games in New England and people up there including Robert Kraft were worried that there he was going to have to fire bill after that 2nd season Tom Brady comes into his life at the perfect time and the rest is history of course but if that hadn't happened they were worried up there trust me not only Bill Belichick but his distance people that organization $511.00 that 1st year in 2000 Owen to to start that 2nd year and then the 100000000 dollars quarterback Bledsoe was out so they were very concerned that this was not going to last we're speaking even O'Connor about his new biography of as he calls him Bill Belichick and he's the authority Sullivan said Bell a check for 30 years I'm going to go with Bella Chickie and it's a delicate cheek the making of the greatest football coach of all time we could spend an hour just talking about that 2001 season and what check did that year in making the decision which was far from a foregone conclusion that he would continue playing Tom Brady who Drew Bledsoe got healthy that he would continue. Playing Tom Brady after Brady was hurt for the a.f.c. Title game in the Super Bowl there were so many make or break decisions that he made and you can argue about a lot of things when it comes to Bill Bell of checks career but he certainly did the gutsier things you could argue in 2001 by going with Brady It so happens I was talking to Drew Bledsoe last we could do a story about him pre 60 of course he jokes that you know if they'd chosen him they would have won 8 Super Bowls instead of 5 but. It and I think he's joking at the time when Bell check makes that fateful decision what was the sense around New England that everything was at stake at that moment in time yeah he actually I don't think he was a big fan of Robert Kraft doing the 100000000 dollar deal with Bledsoe in after the 2000 season I mean Belichick never really believed all that much in blood so and I know from talking to people around him back then they were almost looking for now they didn't want him to get hurt certainly his life was in danger after that hit by my louis in that game so it wasn't as if the coaching staff and people the front office were rooting for anything like that but they were trying to get Tom Brady under center how do we do that without offending and creating a real problem with the owner who just gave one $100000000.00 to Drew Bledsoe as the franchise player new stadium in the making and that was the franchise player in the face of the New England Patriots but they really like Brady and when he got a chance to play and Bill felt that there was something there that Brady had that it factor that he was not going to go away from that when Bledsoe got healthy and if you look back at it Jeremy it wasn't as if Tom Brady's stats were mind boggling they weren't but he just saw something special in him in the way he saw the field and the decisions he made he thought Brady process things quicker made better decisions. And even though the numbers weren't great he just that I'm not going away from this until I have a real reason to do so to Bledsoe's credit if you recall he comes back and wins the a.f.c. Champs again when Brady gets hurt against Pittsburgh and so without that without Brett's Bledsoe staying ready to play the Patriots don't even get to the Super Bowl so he made some mistakes in that game against Pittsburgh but he got away with them but at the end of the day he helped get to that 1st Super Bowl and he deserves a lot of credit for that and has a Super Bowl ring you know Turner's new book is Bill Belichick the making of the greatest football coach of all time we'll be back in our next segment with more of our conversation with the. To the Ford Center. For example to the Sports Center every day on e.s.p.n. . Coming up on Monday will preview the Steelers but some football breakdown a 1st year head coaches bout with his old team and the return of Carson once and . Disporting like speaking again with my colleague even O'Connor about his new biography Belichick the making of the greatest football coach of all time when we left off the last segment in we were talking bat 1st Super Bowl season for the Patriots the 1st in franchise history and. Bill Bell chick's 1st of 5 so far Super Bowl wins with the Patriots you know end the controversy at the time about who they were going to go with the quarterback and before that the controversy that brought Bill Belichick to New England in the 1st place but now nearly 2 decades later he is cemented on the Mount Rushmore of coaches and it's remarkable considering where he was 20 years ago. If you had to pinpoint a few qualities that had made it possible for Belichick to create a dynasty in each in which they are increasingly rare What have they did it's funny to even say he's the greatest football coach of all time which obviously I do in this book I went to St Cecilia high school in Englewood New Jersey Vince Lombardi coached there Ok so the priests and nuns It's a facility if they heard me would not be very How many of them are regular listeners to the show and so absolutely and the only 2 places that Lombardi ever coached where the green as the head coach were the Green Bay Packers and Saints is a high school and so he had a dynasty there and also was the basketball coach and and so it was easy for me to say those words but I think when you look at the hours put in the details the attention to detail the extreme attention to that. But I think it comes down to beyond that and also Bill treating special teams with the same urgency and significance that he treats often defense not every coach in the league does that even though they say they do it comes down to player development and he's had his misses in the draft there's no question about that we've seen that over time but how often has he taken some cast off from another team who really didn't contribute much at all and made that person a significant role player with the Patriots I mean we've seen that time and time again and there's a great that Jeremy that I go back to and I. Mentioned this before but against Atlanta in the Super Bowl the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history right that tying drive or even the 2 drives the end of regulation the tie and then to win over time you're looking at drives that were 10 plays 91 yards in regulation I believe in overtime 8 plays 75 yards so we're looking at 166 yards there and 18 plays 7 people touch the football 7 Patriots not counting the flexion on an incomplete pass none of those 7 players were among the top $100.00 players in his draft class David Andrews the center under after them and Dolan Hogan receivers undrafted Tom Brady the quarterback 199th pick Julian Edelman 232nd pick James White 130 of pick Malcolm Mitchell 112th that is Bill Belichick right there player development it's amazing that better than anybody and it separates him looking needed her I mean I did a story most people you know he had her you know all pro special teams player we talked about them for the special teams to Bill Belichick here's a guy you know who did not start in Ohio State who got more snaps his defensive player I think is 1st game as a patriot than he did in his entire career to Ohio State who's mostly a rugby player up to that point look at kind of career he's had for Bill Belichick That's right and he's taking a wrestler college wrestler and made him a starting off fence of lineman on some of his better teams and he's done so many things like that we take a guy even like Heath Evans back in the day we're talking about a 1011 years ago where he thought Evans had played for Mike Holmgren who would want to Super Bowl he played for Nick Saban with the dolphins Nick Saban the greatest college football coach of all time Saban and Holmgren got absolutely nothing out of Heath Evans he goes the balance that Belichick makes him a significant role player on a very good team so you go up and down the roster across the years and Bill Belichick has done that time and time. Again he has had his misses and personnel in the draft no question about it but when it comes to taking players from other organizations in the n.f.l. Castoff veteran free agents nobody has more hits rather than misses than him and I think again the stat I gave you in the Super Bowl against Atlanta says it all for speaking with Ian O'Connor's new book is Belichick the making of the greatest football coach of all time and in addition to finding diamonds in the rough and developing them guys that nobody else wanted developing them he's also over the years found guys who'd worn out their welcomes for one reason or another in other places and revive them and now we're talking about Josh Gordon joining the Patriots How does that fit into the pattern of Bill Bell chicks career Well 1st off when you look at Josh Gordon's physical ability he's the he's the most talented receiver Bill's ever had not named Randy Moss right to Randy Moss was to some degree allegedly a troubled asset when he arrives physically Josh Gordon is better than anyone he's had other than Randy Moss who when he arrives he had a lot of baggage was a high maintenance guy played great great in 2007 and then ultimately after some time in the England where he started maybe acting like the old Randy Moss again and Bill cut his losses and that was it he moved him out and that's what he'll do if Josh Gordon does not get with the program right away he'll be out of there and Bill will cut his losses he does not wait Jeremy I think you know that so we'll see how this plays out what's more important to me we've seen Belichick take chances on a lot of guys over the years whether it's Randy Moss Corey Dillon back in the day yeah right now some of those guys are right and help them win a chance at some of those guys work out but some don't now tragically the most conspicuous member of the don't group is Zone Hernandez he was a very troubled person at the University of Florida and we saw what happened there and that is an extreme extreme example but what I. I hope for with Josh Gordon is just as a human being and those of us who seeing addiction and alcoholism in our families just that he can he can be fat for the rest of his life or remain clean and sober in the football part of it if he does that will take care of itself but the Patriot way will have no impact on on that part of his life that he has to win but as a football player if he can't make it work in this culture I don't know where he's going to make it work but Belichick has always been willing to take chances on people and believing that his culture and philosophy will win out we'll see how it plays out which I scored We're speaking with you know kind of batters new biography of Bill Belichick and before I let you go eat I need there's so much ground to cover with disguise and I need that with tremendous Metta respect for what he's accomplished as the preeminent coach of his time certainly in pro football you know we talk about the lack of sentimentality getting rid of guys a year early rather than a year late and how that has been one of the keystones of success but to me one of those remarkable things is that somehow along the way sustaining this dynasty for so long ego never got in the way and it could have been a clash of egos and there had been clashes of egos you know. You know you've got these 3 guys at the top you've got craft and you've got Belichick and you've got Brady How have they managed to keep a partnership alive and fruitful for so long when we see it happen so often in sports where the egos tear something down right and I wrote quite a bit about the Jordan bowls and that dynasty 6 championships and along the way Jordan Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson weren't even speaking with Jerry Kraus who the g.m. Who put that whole thing together there was a lot of friction there and yet they won 6 championships so it can happen you can survive friction and creative tension within the organization is sometimes even a good thing as you know but with this group it's amazing that it took 1718 years before there was a fracture seen in. In public view among Kraft Brady and Belichick and specifically Belichick and Brady Seth Wickersham did a great job detailing not for e.s.p.n. Dot com other people in Boston in that marketplace as well and to me I'm just amazed it sucks so long for that to. Basically unfold in public view but what you saw there this was inevitable that they were going there was going to be some friction after Belichick draft Jimmy Gropple 0 in 2014 and that night sights Tom Brady's agent contract status and says I'd rather be early than late at this position this was going to happen it was just a matter of time and it did Tom Brady out plays the machine in the system and forces Belichick to trade his successor Belichick was looking forward to the day where he could win a championship with Jimmy Gras Plone never got that chance because Tom Brady just played at too high a level so he had control the relationship at that point Belichick maybe regains control when he marginalizes Alex Guerrero Brady's fitness coach and life coaching business partner Brady sort of regained control the relationship in the offseason by not reporting. He was the only starting quarterback out of 32 did not report and then Belichick regains control when Brady does report and there was a time this offseason German I have this in the book where Tom Brady was really conflicted about playing one more season for the only head coach he's ever had and he did obviously finally get to that place but I think it was inevitable and really it is remarkable it took so long for this to happen we have only scratched the surface the life and legend in career of a singular figure in pro football in the 21st century Bill Belichick is the subject of the new book from the one and only you know Connor Belichick the making of the greatest football coach of all time it is always a pleasure and congratulations on another one well done Sir Jeremy I'm very proud of.
