Destination radios thanks our sponsors Here's one of those who is helping make our journey possible. John Meyer vice president new trend where come and see us Fortuna McKinley bill and for St Eureka we're a locally owned company and that's very important to us because one it's not just the employees are here but we're here our tax dollars and all the things that go along with being a locally owned company but the most important one is you see our faces you can talk to us on the street we can help you get things resolved we work so hard to take care of everyone that they're happy they don't call customer service you call us instead work with us and we'll make sure things work out for you if you're having a problem with your other carrier please come talk to us we have a lot of ways to just make everything work well and we're working hard on that to get better every day we train our staff like nobody else does we have outside training to help everybody grow to become better and I mean better humans better people is working through issues and things like that we want them to be the best that they can be and if they don't stay with us for a long time they can also move on this is to help them for the rest of their lives and that's our our biggest drawing point we want to make sure that when somebody comes in a store they walk out going wow that was the best time I've had in the in the cellular industry issues come out and often it's a billing issue because there's something where they made a change in the middle of the month and they don't quite understand it because in cellular billing has always been hieroglyphics you know it's never understandable that way and so many ways and he my bill was was 80 dollars last month now it's 120 why and so it's about being able to understand that and work our way through it or helping them go back into the corporate billing system and say hey this isn't correct let's get this fixed we do a lot of that. The biggest thing we see is cracked phones that's a big issue and if they don't want to change it if they don't have insurance we will put a strain protector on it so it doesn't fall off so the glass stays there until they're ready for an upgrade we do a lot of things in working with the rewards programs and inside of the corporate entity that makes the decisions about how you get new phones and everything we're very talented at being able to call and say hey I know they don't have a renewal for a long time but let's talk about this and and let's get them something done we're really good at that I think the next thing that's coming is the predictive things so I quit with Siri I need milk Siri remind me when I drive past Safeway to pick up milk and it does and I think for a lot of us out here in the hinterlands that's kind of out there in many ways because we're so used to having to be so for liable but these things will actually help us do this stuff. And in most locations rather than true there were periods of time when settlement occurred in Del North County even though there were various visits from exploration parties settlements by European based settlers began in earnest in. 855 prior to this time there were Spanish explorers who arrived by ship in the 17th and 18th centuries but the 1st American overland Explorer was Jetta daya Smith who had the California state park named after him and 828 Smith and his party of fur trappers traded with Native Americans in the area came upon lake or old and camp to Crescent City the 2 tribes that they had contact with were the follow on the Iraq Major Pearson reading found gold in $848.00 on the Trinity River which triggered gold miners on the rivers throughout the region by $850.00 done or county was not immune to this the town of Crescent City was established by 853 by j.f. Wendell who settled the land parcel of 220 acres the town became a regional trade center and provided shipping opportunities in and out of the area to supply the miners needs there were gold discoveries on the Smith River as well as in the immediate vicinity of Crescent City it was in that time that people began looking for land routes into and out of the community the effort to do so pushed through the 1st road which was loosely defined as a road known as the Kelsey trail that went from Crescent City to y. Rica the road was completed in 800 $55.00 the next issue was making the harbor safer so an $856.00 Battery Point Lighthouse was built to aid in navigation they needed to be able to get larger amounts of supplies and larger items to the growing community in order to supply the mines as well as provide many of the items needed to build homes the lighthouse help significantly in this effort locally milled lumber also needed to get to market in San Francisco so the port grew with these demands and as the amount of shipping increased so did the need for those unfamiliar with the harbor and getting their ships in safely The lighthouse is available for public tours all summer long and continues to have full time like keepers the lighthouse has had a very interesting life so far including seeing the tsunami of 1964 and other memorable events as well but you'll get that information during the tour timber has also been a critical part in the history of Crescent. And Eleanore county's history as an humble County the 850 s. Is when the timber industry began all locally produced lumber was sent to San Francisco to help satisfy the need for material to build the homes in that town as it evolved the timber industry continued for nearly 75 years through post World War 2 as a demand continued and our area was able to feed the appetite for Redwood along the West Coast in the decade of the fifty's industry transformed from old growth redwoods into 2nd growth stands which at the time had been growing for 75 to 100 years there remain many grows of old growth trees but it became increasingly more expensive to get those trees to the mills which also facilitated the mills to retool for the smaller trees the Evolve industry continued to be active through the 1980 s. When it became more difficult and expensive to acquire the raw materials due to regulation lead set asides and changing forest management techniques by those larger governmental landholders another significant part of Del Norte County history involves the interaction of the community with Mother Nature sure the coastline is a rugged one with challenges of their own but there's also another issue that has peppered the history of don't or county tsunamis is a term now used tidal waves is what many known the phenomenon as well tsunamis have peppered the West Coast for as long as there has been a West Coast the most significant damage causing have been in 1964 and in 2011. The 964 earthquake was triggered on Good Friday with a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in the Prince William Sound of Alaska that triggered the tsunami coming down the coast the quake was felt for 4 minutes and was so powerful that a local island moved nearly 50 feet the open bay in harbor at Crescent City offers left it open to the impact of Southern traveling waves caused by this event and they hit hard 4 distinct waves buffeted the shore and inundated Crescent City with a height of 20 to 21 feet hundreds of buildings were destroyed a 3 day fire was caused by a gasoline truck being slammed into electrical wires and a dozen people died the wave run up caused millions of dollars of damage and covered all of Front Street and in all 30 city blocks were impacted more recently the $9.00 earthquake in Tokyo Japan caused extensive damage to the harbor and docks resulting in the construction of the new harbor you see today in Crescent City a discussion of don't or county wouldn't be complete without talking about the 1st white settlements at Smith River the area is currently one of the world's largest producer of Easter lilies you know these fields because every once in a while you'll see the early Boomers popping up the 1st white families where the dominant is Davis and heights who arrived in 853 the 1st big homestead was a Westbrook ranch known for some time as a reservation ranch after some of it was offered up to 1500 Klamath Indians to live after a flood of washed away many of their homes along the Smith River the original 160 acre ranch was added to over the years making it one of the largest in the area there's also quite a fishing operation along this myth ever by the community it was primarily based on King Salmon harvested salted put in barrels and shipped to San Francisco and was operated by German immigrant August already who migrated to the area in 1976. To. See. Let's hear about another great destination on Destination radio. For this. Community of Brookings began in 1013 it was formed by the California and Oregon lumber company known as the scieno with the town being named after one of the firms founders John Burke ings Johnson brother Robert by the way used his fortune to form the Brookings Institute in Washington d.c. John insisted on having a unifying architectural theme throughout Brookings which still can be seen in the center of town the central building built in 1914 was the office building for the Brookings landed townsite company through 1920 c. An old saw mill produce lumber from the redwood forests of the lower Smith River area the log. They were brought north by way of the company's railroad at this time the population of the Brookings area was only about $1000.00 the community because of its isolation continued to be dependent on supply ships coming to the port with mail groceries and other supplies the storms that Buffet the region during certain times of the year made this reliance on the ships a tenuous at best location for the ships was not in the area of harbor in the port as it is today that was beach at the time the port was at Checco cove and is the reason for wharf street being called Worth Street the wharf that was constructed went out 1200 feet to the point where at low tide the depth was 25 feet at one time there were 5 lumber schooners that were taking the milled lumber to market a Fortunately in $19191.00 of those crashed at Cedar Point To gorda in southern Humboldt County. To allow for quick loading of the ships or unloading of supplies the wharf had a double rail track for the 1st 800 feet and for track the rest of the way out and once the rail cars made it up to the bluff they went along railroad street on single pairs of rails from the lumber kept up the checked out to the mill and then along the bluff the tracks converge near the Checco uncrossed of on a high and winding trestle passing through the area known as Harbor south of Brookings due to the isolation of the community of Brookings Smith River and Crescent City there often would be Saturday night dances in Smith River that brought all the communities together also led to many marriages between the girls from Crescent City and the young men from Brookings by 921 the town had a full 12 grade school for hotels a moving picture theatre a church as well as a meeting hall population at that time eh grown to $1200.00 people with the closing of the scieno mill in 1925 though Brookings fell on hard times in fact the community almost ceased to exist population filleted just $250.00 there was a small fishing fleet that was in existence and a little bit of aquaculture from the east a little a growing field south of the town. In 1038 Bill Ward a former employee of Mr Perkins purchased the c. In the lumber company and in 1031 he hired Elmer bankets who was a land developer in Portland bankets relocated to Brookings as a partner of Ward's word then died 5 years later and bank it's carried on he was known for his support of the community for example he gave the widow of his former partner a roll of houses so she could have a home for herself and her children and study rental income the football field at Brookings Harbor High school is named in his honor following the extension of the Roosevelt highway that's what we call now Highway 101 down the coast from Coos Bay as a way to get products to market and roads being cut into the forests so raw materials could get to the mills large mills once again were active in the community tourism also began to become an industry in town after roads connected Brookings to Crescent City and the south as well as the highway construction of Highway 1990 Grants Pass after World War 2 the dock at the Brookings 4 to fail then falling apart road bridge crossing the Chucko it caught fire and burned the Brookings mercantile store a company store the scieno company had fallen into disrepair but it was opened by the Kerr family and operated to this day it's a hardware store Brookings King national attention the 1962 when the as a festival organizers invited a former Japanese Naval pilot to be the parade's grand marshal what made that so unique is that new ball for jihad had flown from the deck of a submarine and flown over the town in 1902 on a flight to bomb the redwood forests with an incendiary device in an attempt to cause a fire in that forested area one device did land on Mt Emily the other east of sixes north of Brookings by an hour or so these 2 instances are the only known enemy aerial bombings ever on the u.s. Mainland. What's our next destination let's find out now on Destination radio. There are many to choose to ride their bicycles along the Oregon coast on Highway $101.00 we've all seen them in town as they come through during the summer and dry months some choose to go for a day ride while others elect to go for much further distances along the west coast regardless of the distance traveled the goals are often the same get a little exercise see some amazing views and perspectives and get home safely this destination radio segment is intended for the casual biker to get their blood stirring not for the biking enthusiast who already knows what and where they're headed summer on the Curry County coast brings the perfect weather for bikers to hit the streets and highways Celso happens to be the time the motoring public starts vacations with peak volume and traffic arriving in June through September as a general reminder be sure if you're in the area of motorists that you make yourself clearly seen so no one surprised in Gold Beach there's a wonderful bike ride that can start in the Portugal beach the old coast road is still in use from the northern end of the Patterson bridge over the Rogue River that's the direction you'll want to go out of the port it's a simple hill up from the port along Highway one a one I'll take it to the bridge enjoy the historic nature of the bridge and some of the great views you may wish to use the walk areas on the sides of the deck of the bridge to cross there isn't much room if 2 vehicles are using the traffic lanes . At the north end of the bridge you'll want to take a right turn a road that is north bank Rogue River Road this is also the old coast road you'll parallel the north bank of the Rogue river till you get close to Doyle point and then the road curves to the north you'll travel north along the road which will provide you see the views of the Pacific as you pedal toward Autor point the road ties back into Highway 101 just south of Otter point state recreation area where you could leave one of your vehicles as a pick up car or truck where you can simply backtrack on the route as it's less than a 4 mile ride the area you'll be going through is the site of the miners fort that was occupied by local residents during the Indian wars of the $150.00 s. While the fort is a loose term for what existed that's the phrase that's used this route is known as the what a burn loop section since what are burned was a community in the area in the late 880 s. Lasting for a few years and the route provides you access to the beach the north jetty of the Rogue River in the Rogue River reef another scenic ride in the county it's the Brookings harbor area the route can start pretty much anywhere but a natural place to start is Harris Beach State Park you'll find a campground and several parking lot so if you just want to spend a few hours or if you want to linger a few days you have options from the park you can take Highway want to one South there's an adequate shoulder area along with the fact that the speed limit has shrunk from 55 to 35 By that time the flow is easy to travel with. Coming through the city of Brookings there are number of signal lights which break up the traffic flow however on street parking is permitted so there's not an awful lot of maneuverable area short of merging with the traffic in the 4 lanes of Jeffco Avenue but again the traffic is traveling at a comfortably slow pace so you should know how much concern once you cross the checker River bridge you'll want to take the exit down to the port and will provide you the opportunity to ride past the harbor and if you like to ride out to sport Haven beach it's a public beach but also has an r.v. Park it's a feature a paved road way allowed for touring bikers to ride through with out any concerns you're going to to New South going up the bluff and then turn south along Ocean View Drive it's an easy road way to hear through neighborhoods of houses that overlook the ocean but also give you a chance to see up close views of the lily fields that the region is renowned for Ocean View Drive continues along and bring you back to highway I want to one just north of the winch up river in the California Oregon State line once you rejoin highway want to want you can travel north as there is an ample shoulder apron back into Brookings the stretch gives you a much broader view of the agriculture fields take you past residential and commercial developments and very I catch in part of the community for the entire 3 mile ride back on this part of the ride you'll have a constant view of the Pacific or you could go south for a half mile and visit the Crissy Field Information Center enjoy the views from the sea run facility there's a nice easy slope trail to the beach you'll enjoy the views the center's open 95 daily as a great source for travel information and if you go only a few 100 yards south of Chrissy field you'll find the signs for the state of Oregon and the state of California the pending on the side you can take those pictures of entering or leaving each state or both this little extra bits about another mile on your tires you may also be able to experience 1st hand the check to effect visitors often comment about why the. North side of the Checco feels warmer than the southern end that's the effect it has to do with the topography and he just keeping from Illinois Valley through drainage is to the coast there are times when the thermometer actually will drop 5 degrees from one end of the bridge to the other total ride from Paris Beach the park to the wind Chuck and then returning is about 7 miles while you wouldn't want to take youngsters on this ride for adults it's a comfortable afternoon of cycling and the beauty of this ride in addition to the scenery is that if you need to refresh yourself or grab a bite to eat along the way you'll have ample opportunities to do so if you plan on taking either of these rides and leaving early in the morning you may want to take along a windbreaker the fog is often present while the afternoon temperatures can touch into the high eighty's at times many mornings that starts out in the mid fifty's enjoy your time out bicycling in Curry County.
