The more one moment. The European Green New Deal would seek to have Europe become the 1st climate neutral continent by 2050 it would also seek to have greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 European leaders are discussing the emissions goals at a summit in Brussels today environmentalists here at cop $25.00 in Madrid Spain welcomed the plan but said it doesn't go far enough in cutting greenhouse gas emissions this is Greenpeace campaigner Martin Kaiser. The new green dude proposed by the commission today is not the adequate answer to a climate emergency we see already in Europe. Back in the United States Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday where he reiterated his report's key finding at the f.b.i. Is opening of an investigation into President Trump's 10016 campaign aides was not politically motivated during the hearing Republican lawmakers slammed the f.b.i. Over the myriad errors the report revealed about the F.B.I.'s process of seeking approval to surveil former Trump campaign advisor quarter page these applications were filed to the secret 5 the court created by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Civil Liberty experts have long warned of the court's unaccountable and secretive nature for approving domestic surveillance especially against Muslims this is Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz we found and as we outlined here are deeply concerned that so many basic and fundamental errors were made by 3 separate hand-picked investigative teams and one of the most sensitive f.b.i. Investigations after the matter had been briefed to the highest levels within the f.b.i. Even though the information sought through the use of fuzz authority related so closely to. And I'm going presidential campaign and even though those in fault with the investigation knew that their reactions would likely be subjected to close scrutiny. Address the plenary on Wednesday she spoke just a few hours before being named Time magazine's Person of the year. Ago I didn't speak to anyone unless I really had to but then I found a recent to speak. Since then I've given many speeches and learned that when you talk in public you should start with something personal or emotional to get everyone's attention to say things like our house is on a fire I want you to panic or how dare you. But today I will not do that. Because then those faces are all that people focus on. They don't remember the facts the very reason why I say those things in the 1st place. We no longer have time to leave out the science. For about a year I have been constantly talking about our rapidly declining carbon budgets over and over again. But since that is still being ignored I will just keep repeating it. In Chapter 2 on page $108.00 in the s.r. $1.00 i.p.c.c. Report that came out last year it says that if we ought to have a 67 percent chance of limiting the global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius we had on January 1st 201-8420 gigatons of c o 2 left 2 minutes in that budgets. And of course that number is much lower today as we emits about $42.00 gigatons of c o 2 every year including land use. With today's emissions levels the remaining budgets will be gone within about 8 years. These numbers aren't anyone's opinions or political views this is the current best available science. Though many scientists suggest these figures are to moderates these are the ones that have been accepted through the i.p.c.c. . And please note that these figures are global and therefore do not say anything about the aspect of equity which is absolutely essential to make the Paris Agreement work on a global scale. That means that richer countries need to do their fair share and get down to real 0 emissions much faster and then. Help poorer countries do the same so people in less fortunate pulse of the world can raise their living standards. These numbers also don't include most feedback loops non-linear tipping points or additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution. Most models assume however that future generations will somehow be able to suck hundreds of billions of tons of c o 2 out of the air with technologies that do not exist in the scale required and maybe never will. The approximate 67 percent chance budget is the one with the highest odds given by the i.p.c.c. . And now we have less than $340.00 get tons of c o 2 left to meet in that budget to share fairly. And why you see it's so important to stay below 1.5 degrees. Because even a one degree people are dying from the climate crisis. Because that is what the United science calls for to avoid destabilizing the climates so that we have the best possible chance to avoid setting of irreversible chain reactions such as melting glaciers polarize and thawing come a frost. Every fraction of a degree matters. So there it is again. This is my message. This is what I want you to focus on. So please tell me how do you react to these numbers without feeling at least some level of panic. How do you respond to the fact that basically nothing is being done about this without feeling the slightest bit of anger. And how do you communicate this without sounding alarmist I would really like to know. Since the Paris agreements global banks have invested $1.00 trillion new Was dollars in fossil fuels. $100.00 companies are responsible for 71 percent of global emissions. The g 20 countries account for almost 80 percent of total emissions. The richest 10 percent of the world's population produce whole of of our c o 2 emissions while the poorest 50 percent account for just 110th. We indeed have some work to do but some of more than others. Recently a handful of rich countries pledged to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by so on so many percent by this or that date or should become climate neutral or net 0 in so in so many years. This may sound impressive at 1st glance but even though the intentions may be good this is not leadership. This is not leading this is misleading. Because most of these pledges do not include aviation shipping and imported and export goods and consumption They do however include the possibility of countries to offset their emissions elsewhere. These pledges don't include the immediate yearly reduction in rates needed for wealthy countries which is necessary to stay within the remaining tiny budget. 0 in 2050 means nothing if high emission. News even for a few years then the remaining budget will be gone in without seeing the full picture we will not solve this crisis. Finding holistic solutions is what the cop should be all about. But instead it seems to have turned into some kind of opportunity for countries to negotiate loopholes and to avoid raising their ambition. A. Countries are finding clever ways around having to take real action. Like double counting emissions reduction and moving their emissions overseas and walking back on their promises to increase ambition were refusing to pay for solutions or loss and damage. This has to stop. What we need is real drastic emission cuts at the source. But of course just reducing emissions is not enough our greenhouse gas emissions has to stop. To stay below 1.5 degrees we need to keep the carbon in the ground. Only sitting up distant and saying things which give the impression of the action is on the way will most likely do more harm than good because the changes we call it are still nowhere in sight the politics needed does not exist today despite what you might hear from world leaders. And I still believe that the biggest danger is not in action the real danger is when politicians and C.E.O.'s are making it look like real action is happening when in fact. Almost nothing is being done apart from clever accounting and creative p.r. . To it . I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel around the world. And my experience is that the lack of awareness is the same everywhere. Not the least amongst those elected to lead us. There is no sense of urgency whatsoever although he does on not behaving as if we were in an emergency in an emergency you change your behavior. If there's a child standing in the middle of the road and cars are coming at full speed you don't look away because it's too uncomfortable you immediately run out and rescue that child. And without that sense of urgency how can we the people understand that we are facing a real crisis. And if the people are not fully aware of what is going on then they will not put pressure on the people in power to do to act. And without pressure from the people although he does can get away with basically not doing anything well which is where we are now and around and around it goes. In just 3 weeks we will and a new decade. A decade that will define our future. Right now we are desperate for any sign of hope. Well I'm telling you there is hope I have seen it. But it does not come from the government or corporations it comes from the people. The people who have been unaware but are now starting to wake up. And once we become aware we change people can change people are ready for change and that is the hope because we have democracy and democracy is happening all the time not just on Election Day but every 2nd and every hour. It is public opinion that runs the free world. In fact every great change throughout history has come from the people. We do not have to wait. We can start the change right now we the people. Think. And local not clear who the security was and who rushed the stage after graphic to marry spoken solidarity with her but addressing world leaders with their trance shame and keep the oil in the soil the nest and not the tea is with us she was Uganda is 1st Fridays for future climate striker it's great to have you with us thanks so much for joining us when did you get involved with the whole climate issue in this off to my school unless there is there is a period before graduation I wanted to do something that would cause changes to the lives of the people in my community and my country. There are 4 I started coming to such above the main problems that are faced by the people of my country and I Phone number of problems but what strikes me the most was the climate change being a problem because it is not really taught in schools so we don't really know that it is a challenge to us so I decided to read more about it and thus time courses and profits that are making it a threat to humanity and to the lives of the people of my community so when I realized that it was such a big threat I phoned out ways to bring it to public awareness in my country and that's how I found out about the Fridays for future strikes and they decided to start the climate strikes and what was the response in Uganda where did you 1st strike my for a strike I actually had 4 locations because I really wanted everyone to know about it I think it was excitement so I went to force 4 stages one was inched Intel it was a stage then the other was in bigger Lovi then I also had one I tell more it's called Village Mall it's the big mall in Uganda income problem yes in Kampala then I had another one. And how did people respond well people found it very weird that I was in the streets and some of them through some negative comments like I was west in my time and the government will not listen to anything that I have to say but I just go and talk about the effects of climate the climate crisis specifically in Uganda specifically in Uganda we've talked to torrential rainfall that has destroyed a number of things in my country it has been raining since September up to now every day it does it doesn't miss a chance and each time we train this rains are so heavy that they cause that to kill people every time. You watch news you have to expect to see the someone died as a result of the slide you will have to see that people's homes have been destroyed as a result of floods you have to see that fund has been destroyed as a result as a result of a flood and this is a crisis to the people in Uganda so you have extreme weather you have the children chill rains every day and then you have the drought yes. Areas that experienced extreme drought and this is affecting the crop production in those areas in my country most people depend on their funds and crops for survival but with all these droughts and floods people are left with no hope for the future you know we're at the u.n. And there's a lot of u.n. Speak and one of the not it's been around for a long time an overt un speak or a way to dilute the feeling we talk about food insecurity but when a kid is hungry they don't say Mom I feel food and secure they say I'm hungry can you talk about how hunger relates to the climate crisis I will stick with the example of My Country My Country heavily depends on agriculture for most of the people depend on agriculture so if our funds are destroyed by floods if the fans a destroyed by drought and crop production is left that that means that the price of food is going to go high so it will only be the most privileged who will be able to buy food and the biggest emitters in our country that fans who will be able to survive the crisis of food whereas most of the people who live in villages and rural communities they have trouble getting food because of the high prices and this leads to civil division and death literally in my country I love all very mean starvation and death with a list to village. Minister not. Can you talk about. The climate crisis what did the guard. Newspaper How did they put it a headline why climate change is creating a new generation of child brides. I'll speak about Uganda and Africa. Most most of these things happen with the rural communities because as they depend on funds they really don't have any other hope so if their only hope is destroyed that means they're left in total poverty and it's the god child who suffers the most because when the family has no hope for the future that means they will have to give away their daughters or marriage young edges like 15 years old 15 years old it is really terrific to see parents give out their children it is not because they want to it is because it is the only will survive will and of course the children do not agree to this they cry because of that No no child not 15 year old once he gets married one old man because it is visit all men who gets married today and this all points to the climate crisis when their only hope that is the funds and the crops that they have destroyed they are only left with giving out their daughters for marriage to get something in exchange. Chaka found the media coverage of your climate activists. The media is. So biased by the climate crisis. It focuses and selling news. Hour have to appreciate a few media that has been that has tried their best to try and cover the activism of people from the global south but then there is media especially the much bigger media there so biased they they want more selling news instead of telling the stories that really matter to people they keep talking about climate change being a matter of the future but they forget that people the global self is a matter of now and they have to help us report this simply because. If they don't support these things our leaders want to understand the importance of these strikes that we are holding and can you talk about the strike even yesterday as hundreds of you gathered right here in front of the u.n. Climate the Summit of the plenary session you were pushed out ejaculated by the u.n. Fossil fuel polluter possible I still can't believe that's we will keep telling because when you listen to them these they keep saying that they're very supportive of our actions and they're glad that we broke out when it's to them about the climate crisis but it doesn't make sense for them to support to say that this opposing us and then throw us out and leave the very poor Utah's in the beauty they were left in the building to the protecting them instead of protesting Gus We have a children in this and that the adults in this school it was really they really contradicted been sold by saying that they support options and then they School us out and to call it a budget bill I want to thank you so much for being here and I'm glad that you got your badge back today to be on the show being able to be inside the summit as well as outside in the streets and as you head back to Uganda to continue your climate strike the nets and not to take climate activist Uganda is 1st Fridays for future climate striker when we come back we look at ground 0 of the climate crisis the Marshall Islands Stay with us. Climate change conference here in Madrid Spain we turn now to ground 0 of the climate crisis the Marshall Islands one of the lowest lying island nations in the world located in the Central Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the Philippines the Marshall Islands declared a national climate crisis emergency in October earlier this week Marshall Islands youth activist Carl on that cross addressed global climate negotiators and the youth form here at the u.n. Summit. From the Marshall Islands before it came to my Exactly 2 weeks ago I experienced 60 foot flows that forced 200 people from their homes not only do we have inundations but we also have. The flu and I know just recently. The neighbors and some are fighting the measles that took 70 lives there you know which children under the age of 4. Linked to. Climate change. We've been told that if we want to stay in our islands we'd have to adapt and elevate. And with migration as the only plan b. We're having to deal with these issues. That we in the 1st place did not create And may I remind you the Marshall Islands contribution to climate change is only 0.00001 percent of the world's emissions and this is why our country is pushing for social media campaign called mad person viable and we encourage everyone to join in my home is only 2 metres above water with the threats of climate change. We'd lose 2 meters of our culture our young way our money our beat our language 2 meters of our legends and this is why we created a youth leaders coalition that has the youth create innovative ways to fight climate change and lobby them towards our leaders. A team of students came up with the news sustainable design for a seawall that our minister of environment David Paul has shown interest towards This is why our you should be more involved when you are in trouble you find new solutions to face it. And our youth has proven to do so this is why I'm here to represent them and their ideas to be a part of the generation that's going to end the fight against climate change to voice out the reality of the future that the Marshall Islands is facing. To tell you that we don't want to lose our only 2 metres. Stick to that 2 track of this car and Zacharias For more on the Marshall Islands we're joined now by Kathy Jack Kitchener. Climate envoy for the Marshall Islands here at the climate summit also daughter of the president of the Marshall Islands we welcome you to Democracy Now. Ground 0 for the climate crisis or catastrophe and you in the Marshall Islands have declared a climate emergency to explain so we declared a climate crisis this past September before the September climate summit and this really shows that on a national level we're recognizing how serious of an issue that is for our country and we're trying to signal that to the international community by declaring. Explaining how climate change effects the Marshall Islands and how large is this archipelago of violence well it's tiny I mean we're a coral atoll nation so we're one of the smallest nations on earth we're only 2 metres above sea level there's no mountains and right now how many islands over 60 coral atolls Yeah the last I checked about I don't have the exact number there's quite a few It's spread across a lot of ocean but it's impacting us in a lot of different ways 1st. Just 2 weeks ago before I came here we had 16 foot swells of inundations that displaced over 200 people were having disease and health outbreaks where we had over a 1000 cases of dengue Aylesbury related to the kind of well apparently mosquito related illnesses mosquito borne illnesses increase with climate change and so these kinds of disease outbreaks are going to increase as climate change worsens and so these are kind of the some of the impacts that we're seeing but we're also developing our national adaptation plan and this is the national that we're calling in our survival plan so we're not just looking at mitigation you know lowering our use. Emissions in solar panels we're looking at actually changing the entire physical landscape of our island so that we can stay above water Happy 2 years ago at the climate summit in Bonn Germany that was actually hosted by. We were joined by you and your mother president Marshall Islands. I asked her about the legacy of nuclear testing in the South Pacific and the Marshall Islands. Yes Yeah. The legacy of the nuclear testing program. Brings back. All issue of colonialism and how the colonized the come on the Marshall Islands to this day we're still struggling with the legacy of you know what you call jelly. Babies we have people this is babies. That were born by women who lived in the islands that were up and to me needed and we still have people who have not returned to their homeland sets the 50 years of being displaced from their homelands we have islands there will. Be a nuclear testing program of course these people and those can never be recovered so we're still seeking nuclear just this for the people of the Marshall Islands this is one of the legacy of the u.s. Presence in our country and it seems like we're repeating with the climate change issue come. Also same. Force from. Being brought to. Influence or to impact the livelihood of Marshallese that Marshall Islands president. We're joined by her daughter. Kitchener today we're together on Democracy Now 2 years ago in Bonn at the summit crappiest part of the climate delegation. Poet she is a climate envoy you are because you are a poet share a poem with us yes so this poem is actually my latest poem and it's about that national adaptation planning told you about you know as indigenous people were really rooted to the land and so having to go about these negotiations and represent our nation it can be really disheartening and so it's about that but it's also about a cultural tradition called the game in which is the 1st birthday where we celebrate our 1st birth is the biggest one so it's about how our cultural traditions really kind of bring us give us hope and nourishes and so this is the piece. I should say that came ims is significant because children used to die at a high mortality rate so it's a home survival. When my daughter whines I tell her say what she wants in a nice voice my nice voice is reserved for meetings with a view my palm outstretched saying here are our problems legacies rolling out like multicolored marbles don't focus so much on the doom and gloom they keep saying we don't want to depress everyone this is only our survival we rely heavily on foreign aid I'm instructed say I'm instructed to point out the need for funds to build islands move families from where those who weathered my mouth a shovel to spade the concrete with but I'm just pointing out neediness so needy these small underdeveloped countries I feel myself shrinking in the back of the taxi when a diplomat compliments me how brave for admitting it so openly the lure of global negotiations dulls like the back of a war in school I lose myself easily in a game in a game in defined as a feast a celebration a baby's breath endures their 1st years so we pack hundreds of bodies under tents lined up for plates i Pads and my cousin assembly line style are gloved hands pluck out barbecue chicken fried fish scoop potato salad do like droplets of book in Max someone yells for another container judging me the speaker Warbles a keyboard song a child cries mine dances in the middle the mc shouts baby I didn't even mind your children are starting to view someone wheels the grandma into the dance floor the dancers begin now here is a nice so liberation of survival. Kathy Jo. In the Marshall Islands as we wrap up the solutions that Marshall Islands disengagement Yes Yes So I wanted to make it clear that you know we're not just victims of this kind of process of what's happening Marshall Islands is doing a lot in the forefront we're one of the 1st countries to enhance or and d.c.s. We have a really ambitious 2050 renewable energy plan that we have solar eyes most of our outer islands and we've also where the leading the climate vulnerable forum where the chair of this alliance of $48.00 nations of the most vulnerable nations were heading the high ambition coalition and we even started a mad for survival social media campaign while here the Madrid ambition drive for survival and we've been going around getting as many countries as they can to join on to say that their hand and sing there in d.c. And g. Hold this for volatility through 3 layers of British courts asserting that a Pringle is not a potato chip but a savory snack you see potato chips are taxed in England but savory snacks are not to dogs the potato tax p. And g. He tried to deny the very essence of its own product the litigious corporation conceded that Pringles are about 40 percent potato flour but argued that this does not give the product a taxable level of potato Yes potato nys Lord Justice Jacobs was not moved declaring that her Pringle is quote made from potato flour in the sense that one cannot say that it is not made from potato flour he added pointedly that the question was quote not one calling for over elaborate almost mind numbing legal analysis pay the tax he.
