Carried out the attack were killed in a shootout with police. Tonight we are learning more about the male shooter, syed farook, and whether he held radicalized beliefs, potentially contributing to his motives. Paul vercammen has the latest. As the nation mourns another mass shooting. Authorities in San Bernardino are tasked with figuring out what was behind wednesdays massacre. Investigators have spent hours inside this home where syed farook and his wife lived. They have found an arsenal of weapons. Thousands of rounds of ammunition and material to make pipe bombs. We did locate the one pipe bomb. That was actually three pipe bombs combined into one that had a Remote Control, car type of Remote Control device that appears to have not worked in this case. Farook was a 28yearold us citizen, with no criminal record, and an employee of the county health department. He abruptly left a workplace Holiday Gathering wednesday reportedly angry and came back with his 27yearold wife, Tashfeen Malik and opened fire. The fbi and other Law Enforcement officials are attemping to trace who farrok had been in touch with, where he traveled, and what may have prompted his actions. Law enforcement Officials Say farook had been in toucwh more thanrson on the fbi dar for rrorism reasonsthough ngh priority via phone and cial media. Officals also said the mmunications werent frequent. Ere was obviously a mission here, we know that. We do not y. The des moines man accused of a his first appearance in court today. Michael wanchanic is charged with two counts of first degree murder. Hes accused killing Heather Belieu and bryon howard. They were found dead on monday inside a home in des moines. Two children were also found in the home. They were unharmed. Wanchanic was arrested on tuesday night after a four hour standoff on highway 141 in dallas county. His next Court Appearance is scheduled for december 14th. Wanchanic was also wanted on a probation violation. Two weeks ago he plead guilty to first degree harassment after threatening to burn down a womans house with her and her children inside. That women was wanchaneics ex girlfriend. She filed a report from her home in Melcher Dallas in june of this year. According to a Police Report the threats and harassment lasted for weeks. Police say wanchanic would call and text his ex hundreds of times a day, show up at her work and even damage her property. Marion county sheriff Jason Sandholdt says wanchanic is a 494800 its a serious issue. Its a Mental Health issue, the subject is not stable. If its a repetitive nature type thing its obvious good he is not on the street besides his harassment charges. Online Court Records shows several other charges like theft and solicitation to commit a felony two other homicides in des moines remain unsolved. Police say the recent uptick in Violent Crime is so far not related to an increase in Gang Activity. 35 5336 02 we are not ignoring that there is a gang presence in this city. Weve trained all of our officers as so we are effectively addressing it. Police spokesperson, Sergeant Paul parizek says Gang Activity peaked in the mid 1990s. But started to slow down in the 2000s. Thats about when the gang unit spread to other areas in the department. Now all officers are trained to Sergeant Parizek says. Not all drivebys or shootings are gang related and they are not seeing connections to gangs in recent cases. He said the Department Takes a prevention approach when it comes to gangs. Through youth prevention programs. Women in military combat. Until today it had never been a possibility. Recruiting of women for combat positions will begin as soon as january 1st and must be in place by april. We are not noing anything differently except actually approaching and recruiting people that we couldnt before for certain jobs. Countries such as canada and sweden in 1989 along with germany and new zealand in 2001 have already allowed women in combat. Colonel hapgood says its one of the most groundbreaking military decisions in over 6 decades. It is the deadliest mass shooting incident in this country since sandy hook. President obama ordered flags at half staff in honor of the San Bernardino victims and issued a statement in the oval office, surrounded by his national reassuring, but full of with uncertainty after briefings the San Bernardino attorney general and fbi director at this stage we do not know why. And thats the key question still unanswered what was the motive . It is possible that this is know. Its also possible this was workplace that dead suspect syed farook was radicalized, and in touch with overseas terror contacts, the administration, like Law Enforcement, is Still Holding out the possibility that other factors were in play. There may be mixed motives in all this, which makes the investigation more complicated. But rest assured, we will get to the bottom of this. But even with that, cautions from across the administration against a rush to judgment. He was specifically had in mind that people should not jump to conclusions.
