More than 300 tons of contaminated water leaked out of a storage tank in august, and theyve been dealing with the effects ever since. Some of the water may have flowed out through a ditch, and into the pacific ocean. Workers dug a well about 10 meters from the tank to monitor the impact. On thursday, they detected 400,000 becquerels of strontium and other radioactive substances in the well. Thats 6,500 times higher than readings taken the day before. Fishermen worry about what the leaks might mean for them. The accident two years ago forced crews up and down the coast to stop working. Starting in june of last year, those in northern fukushima headed back out on to the water to carry out test catches. And now fisherman from the port city of iwaki have headed out for test catches of their own. Translator we are 30 hopeful and 70 worried about the contaminated water. Reporter the fishermen have to stay at least 40 kilometers away from the Nuclear Plant, and they can only catch 16 kinds of seafood, including octopus, hairy crab, and the local specialty, round green eyes. Fishing cooperatives test for radioactivity. Theyve set their own safety limit, twice as strict as the government standard. If a sample does not meet their criteria, all of the species caught that day will be thrown out. Fishermen on friday hauled in more than 1 ton of marine products. They were tested for radioactivity, but no tainted samples were found. The fishermen will ship their catch to markets around the prefecture on saturday morning. Nhk world. More rescue workers are headed to the scene of a disaster on an island south of tokyo. 25 people have been confirmed dead after a powerful storm hit izu oshima on wednesday. Teams are searching for 22 others who are missing. The crew of a maritime selfdefense transporter has made its way to the island. The ship is carrying about 50 trucks and heavy machinery that will be used to remove mud, driftwood and debris. Record rainfall soaked a mountainside, sending part of it sliding down toward a community. Selfdefense force commanders have also sent in an additional 130 personnel to help with the rescue and recovery effort. About 1,000 police, firefighters, and sdf personnel are searching for the missing. The work has been tough and time consuming. Another storm is expected to hit the island on saturday. The site honors japanese who have died in wars and also enshrined there are leaders convicted of war crimes after world war ii. The lawmakers offered prayers at the shrines main hall. They belong to a crossparty group that promotes visits to yasukuni. The Group Gathers each year in the spring and autumn and on august 15th, the day japan commemorates the end of world war ii. A spokesperson says the number of lawmakers taking part this time was the second highest since 1989. The legislators included some deputy cabinet members. The internal Affairs Members visited separately. Prime minister shinzo abe said he would not attend the autumn festival. Winds actually gusting up to about 250 Kilometers Per Hour right in that center of circulation here, right where the eye is developing, you can see it pop up on the satellite imagery just to the west of guam. Tropical strength winds were noted here. Believe it or not, its actually expected to continue to intensify through the next 72 hours, becoming a violent typhoon out over open ocean. The good news is that before it starts to impact japan here going into next week, we are expecting a decrease in the intensity. Where exactly is this going to be going . This is bringing rain showers with it, and much of the northeast youre going to feel the effects of that. Also a separate stationary boundary lingering around the gulf coast. The problem here is that youre not going to be seeing very heavy showers, but its rain falling on already saturated ground, so there is some risk of flooding out here. As the fronts drift to the east, theyre dragging in cold air from the north. Across everyone of the eastern seaboard, youve actually been seeing aboveaverage temperatures the last couple of weeks.
