Negotiations to begin leaving the eu will begin next monday as scheduled. And Real Madrid Soccer star faces tax charges. Brent i am brent goff. It is good to have you with us. Tonight, in an eagerly awaited appearance before a u. S. Senate committee, u. S. Attorney general Jeff Sessions has denied any knowledge of collusion between the Trump Campaign and russian government officials. The Senate Hearing is still going on but at the start of his testimony, sessions was emphatic about the russian connection. Let me state this clearly, colleagues. I have never met with or had any conversation with any russians are any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in United States. Further, i have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump Campaign. I was your colleague and his body for 20 years, at least some of you. And the suggestion that i participated in any collusion, that i was aware of any collusion with the russian government to hurt this country, which i have served with honor for 35 years, or to undermine the integrity of our democratic process, is an appalling and detestable lie. Brent strong words from the u. S. Attorney general. Lets go to washington for our correspondent. You heard it yourself. You attorney general appearing hot under the collar. What is the tenor so far . As we just saw, the attorney general Jeff Sessions got emotional at some points, especially when he felt his honor was questions. During the question and answer session, also some Democratic Senators got emotional when they felt that sessions was not answering all of his questions, particularly in regard to conversations he had with the president. But generally it was quite simple. Just sessions had been on the senate for many years and clearly senators treated him as a former colleague at a certain degree of respect. Didnt always follow up as aggressively as they might have had if this had been an outside witness. Brent the attorney general was also asked about his role in the firing of fbi director james comey. What did he have to say there . Carsten first of all he recused himself from the Russian Investigation because he was a member of the campaign it was under investigation. But he claims that doesnt mean that he cannot deal with management issues, leadership issues at the head of the fbi. So he didnt see any problem and any violation of his recusal of being involved in the firing of mr. Comey. Of course, that line of argumentation is a bit weak as the president of the United States himself said in a tv interview that the firing of mr. Comey was due to the Russian Investigation. He even bragged about firing mr. Comey in front of the Russian Foreign minister. But still, mr. Sessions insisted this was all about the fbi in disarray, a leadership proble, also the handling of the clinton email affair. Basically said the fbi needed a fresh start. But clearly, again, that is quite weak because he had to admit that he didnt even talk to the head of the fbi about those alleged problems within the organization. And again, the president said it was all about the russian thing. Brent he was also asked to comment about the special prosecutor, robert mueller. Why was he asked to talk about that at all . Carsten this has been the big story in washington dc for the past 24 hours. There are rumors that the president is contemplating now firing also the special counselor, robert mueller, who was just named a few weeks ago. That, of course, is a big story. It started with a lot of people questioning the credibility and impartiality of robert mueller. Now allegedly trump is considering filing firing him in the white house does not tonight. Most people and watch it and say it would be a very, very bad idea. It would make the white house look very, very bad. Brent our correspondent in washington on another exciting day in the u. S. Capital. Thank you very much. Now to britains Prime Minister theresa may. Today she held talks with the leader of a Northern IslandPolitical Party that she hopes will shore up our government. Then she flew to paris to meet president emmanuel macron. He told her that britain could still stay in the European Union if it wants to. But the Prime Minister has been advised not to reach a deal. She was warned that the British Government could be seen as partial and risky return to violence in northern ireland. I think there has been a lot of commentary around the issues that we are talking about and it wouldnt surprise anyone we were talking about matters pertaining to the nation generally. From stability to the u. K. Government, brexit. Reporter tough challenges lie ahead for the british Prime Minister ahead at home and abroad. Brent i want to bring in a Research Fellow from newcastle, england. Good evening. Start with Prime Minister may and arlene foster. They talked today much longer than people were expecting. And we understand that theyre going to talk again tomorrow. Is that a sign that it is not that easy to get the planned support deal that may needs . Guest yes, absolutely. Partly this is also a reflection of the fact that coalitions are quite rare in british politics. Between 2010 and 2015 has only this record. But it is a reflection that arlene fosters party, what they are doing to use the situation at their end and extract the maximum possible benefit from this. They are seasoned, hardened negotiators. The former chief aide to tony blair said it took them years to drag out a deal from the dup, and they got a very good deal out of that. They know it is their moment in the sun and theyre going to use it to extract the utmost that they possibly can. Brent so what is that going to look like . What does the dup get for their support . Connal first and foremost, a lot of financial invtments and creasing ofunds frothe u. K. , especially the more wealthier taxpayers in london and the south east. Also they will get guarantees that they will not be a vote on irish unity, which the dup feels as divisive and unnecessary. But the most important things in terms of the european negotiations is what theup willo and whathey want is for there to be a soft brexit. This is important because this will affect the entire brexit negotiations. They dont want a hard border. They want to ease trade with eu Member States. Northern ireland needs the situation and they will bring this to bear in those negotiations. Brent connal on these difficult negotiations for theresa may joining us from newcastle, england. President trumps top Law Enforcement officer Jeff Sessions has told us that it Committee Told a Senate Committee that he had no knowledge of collusion between the Trump Campaign manager russia officials. He said any suggestion that he had was, quote, an appalling and detestable live. Javier is here now with a decision on a key brexit dispute. Javier there are many of them. One of them seems to have progressed. Gibraltar has been considered a british territory for centuries, although spain also claims sovereignty. Spain has been given the right of veto or the relationship between it and the eu. Now the year in court of justice has ruled that gibraltar and the u. K. Can also be treated as a single economic unit for certain aspects of eu law, in particular , to read. The court said its ruling should not be understood as undermining the current status of gibraltar but it could seriously harm the territorys profitable gambling. Reporter the rock. A metaphor for gibraltars strength. Her of the European Union, at least part of the European Union, at least for now. But attempts by spain have been rejected. They are british. But they are also anxious. There will be a downturn in the gibraltar economy. As a result, the economy that we have worked so hard to build over the past 30 years will suffer. The uncertainty, not knowing how we move forward, the attitude from spain towards gibraltar will change dramatically. It could be very detrimental to business, generally. The confidence is down. Reporter the eu exit will impact the gambling firms here, as gibraltars future as a tax haven remains uncertain. Gibraltar and britain are a single unit under eu law, meaning while the online betting firms have so far only had a 1 tax rate, being bundled with the u. K. Means they will have to shell out as much as 15 . Gambling companies generated 30 billion euros making gibraltar one of the richest places on earth relative to size. But that soon could be gambled away. Javier that ruling should clear up one question surrounding brexit. But there are many more. Theresa may has been widely criticized for not saying clearly how brexit is going to look like. Now it seems like members of her party are Holding Secret talks with the labour party to secure support for socalled soft brexit. That means staying inside the eu Single Market in exchange for keeping the freedom of movement for the citizens. Opponents of a soft brexit say it will benefit businesses, but may famously said brexit means brexit. Hardliners accuse her of selling out. Two options, two camps but which will it be . We asked for an opinion. I think we have to put to bed this distinction between hard brexit and soft brexit. For me, there is hard brexit or no brexit. There is no in between a muscular looking at some form of options. For example there is no in between. The norway option includes membership of the customs union. That in effect would allow the u. K. To implement its own trade deals in the future. Javier two corporate news, once your preferred search engine, yahoo is now officially part of the digital history after verizon finished its close of 4. 9 billion acquisition of the internet company. Thats the thing about Tech Companies they can come and go quicker than we think. Lets bring in jens korte. Good to see you. Yahoo aside, the Tech Companies have been in the headlines the last few days. It seems like the selloff is over, at least for now. Jens yes. There has been concern that the selloff in Technology Shares could also marked the end of the bull market overall for wall street. But after two weekdays, we now saw a rebound in tech stocks. Tuesday gained 2. 7 . Fundamentally, nothing really has changed. Some of those tech names are still pretty expensive. The ministry of finance came out with a 149page paper, how to reform the financial reform of barack obama, that might have given an extra push. Javier that is as investors prepare for the next decision of the u. S. Federal reserve which started its twoday meeting this tuesday. What can we expect there . Jens well, it is pretty clear that the federal is going to increase Interest Rates for a second time this year. At would also mark the third increase in the past seven months. There is no doubt about that. The big question is, when will the next rate increase happen . Will we see one more or two more this year . Then what happens to all the treasuries that the Federal Reserve is holding . 4 trillion. But we wont get any answers on those pressing questions. Javier thank you very much. And that is it from the business desk for now. But we keep talking about money, in a way. Brent thats right. Dirty money, or someone that or money that someone didnt want the government to know about. Spanish prosecutors have filed a tax Fraud Lawsuit against real madrid football star Cristiano Ronaldo. They had accused him he joins a growing list of spainbased footballers who have fallen afoul of the countrys tax man. Reporter two weeks ago he was on top of european football. Tuesday was different for Cristiano Ronaldo. He found out spanish prosecutors had charged him with tax evasion. The allegations stem from information brought to light last year by the anonymously sourced Football League platform. Cristiano ronaldo is alleged to have sold his image rights, a hugely valuable asset for an advertising icon two Shell Companies in the caribbean and ireland where taxes are far lower than in spain. He reported 150 Million Euros from his image rights over the past four years, helping them become the best paid athlete in the world. If he evaded taxes, the bill will be large. Thus far, he does not seem worried. His last week shows him enjoy the sunshine by a swimming pool. Some of his biggest fans on the streets of madrid see things differently. If it is true, this gives a bad impression. If you steal you have to give a correct. Give it back. It doesnt matter if you are Cristiano Ronaldo. If he did it, he has to pay. The truth is they have to investigate. Im sure that these guys earn so much money they cannot control all that. Maybe they leave it to they managers and they are not really sure what is going on. Reporter Cristiano Ronaldo now has something extra visit extra to think about. Brent probably not something he wants to be thinking about. For more on his troubles were joined by max from the sports decks. Hoping aside, how serious are these allegations . All kidding aside, how serious are these allegations . Max very serious. They say he intentionally did not declare image rights income to the tune of 28 Million Euros in a three year period he declared just 11. 5 million. They say its four times that. Prosecutors say Cristiano Ronaldo manipulated his tax rate by saying his income came from real estate, which they say it did not. He adjusted his tax rate three years ago, but they want more. He is the highestpaid sportsperson in the world. Last year he is reported to have made over 80 Million Euros in salary, bonus and sponsorships. Brent amazing. The Tax Authority is saying this looks like it was intentional and not an accident. He is not the first player who has been called into court for unpaid taxes in spain. However the other cases played out . Max the last highprofile one was in july of last year. They were sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud and similar to this case, a little more money in this case. Then it was 4 Million Euros. Because the sentence was less than two years and they had no, no record, they escaped jail sentence. His club was also blamed for tax fraud. It is a common trend. Brent max, thank you for much.
