The oldfashioned feelgood movie la la land leads nominations for the oscars. You cant leave so fast as the ruling today from the u. K. Supreme court on Prime Minister theresa may toss brexit plans. The Supreme Court says the government must get Parliament Approval before beginning brexit proceedings to take the country out of the eu. This will put additional strain on an already tight schedule. May wants to trigger brexit by the end of march. Parliament is expected to give approval but proeu lawmakers may win some concessions first. It was a landmark ruling in uncharted territory. The 11 justices siding against the government which, in its haste to break with the eu, had hoped to avoid parliamentary vote. A source of u. K. Law will be cut off when they withdraw from the eu treaties. Certain rights enjoyed by u. K. Citizens will be changed. The government cannot trigger article 50. The ruling is a blow for Prime Minister theresa may who is intending to invoke article 50. The governments top lawyers seem to take the courts decision in stride. The government is disappointed with the outcome. That we have the fortune to live in a country where every individual, every organization, even government, is subject to the rule of law. The government will comply with the judgment of the court and do all that is necessary to implement. The government says it will introduce draft legislation to start the brexit podcast. The secretary warned against any attempts to try to block brexit. I trust no one will seek to make it a vehicle to frustrate or delay the process. The decision may not stop brexit in its tracks but delays will likely heat up the rhetoric and give lawmakers pause to consider the ramifications of the decision to break with the European Union. Brent yes, those ramifications. He is a researcher at the university of warwick. With talk of the Supreme Court today. How significant, how big of a blow is it . Guest it is not as big a bluish you might have anticipated a few months ago. I think the government has been aware that this is likely to be the outcome, at least for the past couple of months. I think they resign themselves to some degree. And in the u. K. , there is a sense that it couldve been a lot worse. They did say the parliament has to be sorted and to vote for article 50 to be implemented. It also said it excluded devolved governments of scotland, wales, and Northern Ireland. If the court ruled in that direction, it wouldve been bad. It is a setback but not the devastating blow it mightve been. Brent it is not what the people in scotland or Northern Ireland wanted to hear. How is this going to work . If not, we are going to go for another independence referendum . Guest i think that is the situation in british politics at the moment. We try to deal with the problems we face in the moment. The Scottish National party today has already said the government will try to word this legislation very tightly to make some of those inadmissible. This is going to legitimize political separation. There is still a majority in favor. The political situation is not great at the moment. Brent in her general election, her Junior Coalition partners have chosen the foreign european parliament. Martin scholz, the announcement has just been made by the man many expected to run for the social democrats themselves. The party says it plans to publish its decision on sunday. Lets listen to what it says. Martin scholes will also take over as the new party leader of the spd. I propose this jointly to the committee which accepted it unanimously. Lets pull in melinda crane. It good evening to you, melinda. For our audience, we should explain the vice chancellor would normally had been the expected candidate to contest angela merkel. But hes not going to do that. Melinda after what we hear, Martin Schultz is the better and stronger candidate. And the candidate who can really lead the party to victory. Because the party needs to stand completely united. Both need to be in the hands of mr. Scholz. He is clearing the way. Brent lets talk about martin scholz, the candidate for the social democrats. Melinda his Approval Ratings are quite high. German say they will give 36 of the vote to mr. Schulz. That is a gap, but certainly not as bad as the gap wouldve in. Would have been. Brent if you look at what we are going to see in germany and compare that to the elections across other european countries, angela merkel, the chancellor, she is a committed european and defender of the eu. So is Martin Schulz. You have these two defenders running from the same office in germany. Is that a good move in this era of skepticism . Melinda Martin Schulz said the social Democratic Party has done the work against populism and rightwing nationalism. And he intends to make it run in the selection. In this election. I will be doing it without bashing the eu because europe is the absolute fundament of foundation. Doing the ordinary telling the ordinary man, the working man. It looks to be an unstoppable force. 14 nominations, a Record Number, and it looks like it could have a Record Number of wins. If any film can beat la la land, there are two possibilities. Moonlight is a comingofage story about a gay black man in miami. And manchester by the sea, a very different story the stars Casey Affleck as a man trying to deal with tremendous grief. La la land is a loud and flashy film. Moonlight and manchester by the sea are different. They are quiet. They are slow. They are introspective movies. I think the la la land locomotive will roll over all competitors. Maybe one of these two films has a chance of an upset. Brent what about foreign films . Best foreign film . The german film debuted last year in cannes. It was beaten at the Golden Globes a little while ago, but is nominated for an oscar. I think it has a pretty good chance of winning. The only thing against it is that it is a german comedy. If im being really nasty, a german film without nazis doesnt usually have a good chance at the oscars but if any film can do it, it will be this one. Brent we cant let you go without talking about the goddess herself, meryl streep. Her 20th nomination . Is completely insane.
