It has driven many people from their homes. Haiti is the poorest country in the americas and many people live in houses unable to dan tstorms. Withstand these storms. The full force of the storm hit the western tip of haiti on tuesday. Even before that, gusting winds pummeled the country. Up to a meter of rain is expected along with flash floods and mudslides. As the storm moves inward, people are especially in danger. Some residents are reluctant to leave their homes. The problem i have with leaving is that the authorities came with a truck and asked everyone to evacuate the area. We agree with the Evacuation Order but what about our things . If our possessions are stolen then we will not get them back. I am already in a financial storm. With this storm, i will be in even more misery. Squalid Living Conditions make haiti very vulnerable. The poorest nation in the americas is still recovering from a massive earthquake six years ago. Many believe that the government cannot deal with natural disasters. Hurricane matthew is likely to make it even worse. Christopher our correspondent has been talking from the capital. He tells us what conditions are right. We still have rain and big wins winds. We know 11 cities in the south are flooded. At least a bridge that connects to cities have collapsed. More than 10,000 people have been displaced in a few cities. They have been impacted by the hurricane. It is important for people to reach their family members in the south. It will be hard to help with the Little Information they have. When we reach them, they tell us it is a difficult situation they are in right now. Obviously it is still a developing situation. The authorities did urge people to evacuate vulnerable areas. Do you think those cautions were adequate . They need it. Those precautions are adequate but i dont know if it will have an impact. At least more than 10,000 people have been displaced in a few cities in the south of the country. That is next to the ocean. People have been evacuated by force. This is what the minister said in the letters. Just briefly, depending on how widespread the destruction is, will haiti have the resources to cope . We dont have a final assessment of the hurricane yet. It will be hard for them struggling. It has been six years since the earthquake but we have programs. The Prime Minister is being vigilant. We know the haitian government is struggling with the economic crisis. I dont know if the government will be calling for help on other states or ngos but for now i dont know what the position is. Three of the soldiers have been killed and seven wounded in the fight. It fell to the taliban last year in the militants first capture. They spent the last day trying to clear out pockets of the resistance by american airstrikes and special forces. The sources we have talked to describe sporadic fighting. Taliban fighters held out some kind of barricade. That fighting has continued and is expected to continue for some time. The fact that there is still fighting and taliban militants was able to come through the defenses, what does that tell us about the strength of the taliban . It indicates that the taliban is not going anywhere anytime soon. It also raises questions about the capacity of the Government Troops which are obviously trained and backed by the nato coalition. It raises questions about their capacity to not only defeat the taliban but even protect these major cities. Josh, we have been hearing about witnesses on Police Officers abandoning checkpoints without firing a shot. Does the taliban have supporters within . That is one of those suggestions. There are also a lot of reasons put forward for the failure of police to be able to stand and hold those positions. Among those are many regional and ethnic divisions that appear to be dividing the leadership there and making it much more difficult to her present a united front. They are almost completely dependent on western economic monetary aid to fund those security forces. Also nato advisers and aircraft have been pivotal in preventing taliban gains. They are trying to keep the country of flow. The Human Rights OrganizationAmnesty International has warned against making those pledges conditional taking back refugees. Eu nations including germany are planning to send exiles back home to what may be an unsafe welcome. We are deeply worried about the intention of the German Government to return asylum seekers. The situation has become extremely worrisome. The last year was the bloodiest year since the taliban began. It especially affects civilians and children a lot. The number of displaced peoples has doubled. There are 1. 2 million displaced people within afghanistan. It is not a safe country for everyone. The recognition rates of afghans seeking for asylum has dropped massively. This is very a very worrying trend. We see that the numbers are dropping but also the main countries, the situations have not improved but have deteriorated. We are worried that the decisions are taking on a wrong legal basis or that they are misjudging the situation. One must say that since the changes in our loss in march which prohibit for two years can reunite with the families in germany. There may be a political interest with those numbers dropping. Totally unprovoked. Students and other south African Universities have entered the fray to protest an 8 increase in tuition. That is despite a pledge by the government to freeze education these after similar unrest last year. Our University System has failed us. We must highlight that the structural bias of the system will not adjust for the students who fight for Free Education. We have been peaceful the entire time. The South African president called for a halt to further demonstrations. What is happening on our campuses at present has the potential to destroy our universities. But we have the power to change it. No swift solution is on the horizon. Administrators say Free Education would be a light on teaching while protesters see it is as an instrument of discrimination on poor families.
