And this is from Kristy What's the best way to soundproof your home from loud neighbors Yeah that's a well of course you could always go over and knock on the door and ask them to please keep it down but you know people that are so thoughtless and selfish that they don't mind making noise probably wouldn't respond to that but it might be worth a try Kristie but short of that neighbor's noise or of street noise I get a lot of complaints from people who live on a busy side street lot of traffic the noise usually can be lessened and softened a little by fiddling with the windows what I mean by that is the walls themselves are insulated and there's a lot a lot more you can do with the walls anyway you could add a layer of new siding outside with some styrofoam sheeting underneath that will well ahead will help a tiny bit though it's very expensive Who wants to resize their house right so the windows of what we need to pay attention here to here and there are some choices you can get you could replace the window on that side of the house with a triple glazed window that's a that's a window as it sounds just like it sounds with 3 panes of glass so you get to thick air spaces to ameliorate that noise you could also buy some cellular shades or heavy drapes can also help or storm window the cheapest thing of all triple glazing of course is available the problem is you've got to replace the window and you're looking probably at the better part of a 1000 bucks to do that but you can add a storm window on the outside of your existing window fairly inexpensively. A storm window on the outside will create an airspace between it and your existing window of 2 you know 2 inches or so 2 and a half inches plus you'll have the the double glazing of the window itself and that will really help lessen that noise so I think that's really the answer here is to is to soften the noise by fiddling with the window drapes cellular shades. Or triple glazing or the I like the idea of the storm window because not only will it help with the noise Kristie it will also help with energy loss of depends on what you can say what side which wall is was but if it's on the north side where the cold air comes from that storm window will help keep the bedroom warmer and it will save energy for sure so that's the kind of the answer I mean you could add a layer of insulation and she rock on the inside but again we're talking thousands of dollars and disruption to your lifestyle siting on the outside with some styrofoam would help a little but not enough that would be worth the expense and sometimes you know you just have to bite the bullet and and run over to the neighbors or if they're you know there are noise ordinances in most cities usually from 11 pm to 7 am against making noise that's why trash trucks don't come around before about 7 or 8 in the morning that kind of thing so if they're violating a noise ordinance by being extra loud after what would be the normal curfew time you could always check in with the police or. Maybe you have an h o a or some neighbors you could help you deal with them but going over and talking them sometimes neighbors aren't aware of how loud they are and you know many times they are but it just was worth a try before you get the get those gendarmes involve the police that's kind of a last resort kind of thing so there's some ideas about softening up the noise from . Noisy neighbors and as I say if you have a busy side street same thing I've noticed I'm noticing that it just seems more and more that of young guys mostly are getting more and more cars without mufflers or the loud echoing amplification on their mufflers you know those those mufflers that actually. If you have a regular asphalt shingles roof 5 inch gutters are great there seamless I like the aluminum extruded gutters that just come out of a machine there spit out to a custom length and they come in many many colors to match or exterior trim to harmonize with in your siding and and your trim paint but I do like them because they are seamless nothing you know unless leaks a good rule of thumb for downspouts is every 25 feet or so. Of course the more you have the more easily the gutters can handle big big downpours that we get in the summer time downspout locations though that's the way just when you can put in put new gutters on your house downspout locations are important you wouldn't want a downspout for instance right in the middle of your patio or dumping into a flat spot or next to a window well and you wouldn't want one on the uphill side of the house so using the rule of thumb of the 25 feet or so per downspout try to pick locations where the drainage makes the most sense and that means on the downhill gravity side and many of you have a backyard that's a little tipped and so the downspouts on the tip and on the low end make the most. Most sense you want to get that water carried away down the hill over to the city street and just get away from your house and of course downspout extensions are a big deal we like to put on a flex pipe and bury it so that we have water discharging at least 12 feet or so or more away from your foundation especially away from window wells big deal so about 80 percent of the water that have affects your house. Greasing and Scott scuff sand everything a little bit and just a little bit just a d. Gloss them a little bit and then the secret as we have said so many times is a good primer sealer like bull's eye 123 which is becoming my new favorite or kills k o z and follow that with a good satin gloss acrylic latex paint so vinegar and water a little just a little scuff sanding very lightly Now don't get into the surface of the dry wall which will make another different kind of mess and then a couple of coats of kills or bull's eye will be fine once you preparing the surface but when you're going to paint over an unusual surface like this is a big deal and then you can pick any topcoat you want I like you know you can semi gloss would be a little too glossy for a wall but a nice satin or egg shell would be would be the way to do that. Lissie here with us we have Laura this is an interesting one the front of my house has a 30 inch overhang we call those candle leavers builders use cantilevers to give you more square footage for less money per square foot because they don't have to put a found a. Underneath and calibers vary in size typically from a one foot 2 feet is normal 30 inches is a little more than normal to 2 feet is about the average but you can do more than that if you can engineer the framing accordingly so you have 30 inches Laura and it's cold bedroom because of the can leave or. You want to check the insulation underneath the candle leaver. That and the weighted you'll have to go outside and they'll be a layer of plywood on the bottom of that candle lever and you'll have to kind of ease a few nails out and take a look and see if it's stuffed full of insulation or not if your house is older and I'm thinking maybe eighty's and earlier and older than older than the 1980 s. You may not have a lot of insulation in there so you can stuff a bunch in yourself just you know you don't have to take the plywood totally off you can remove a full a few nails and and stuff insulation bass in there and pop the plywood back and and re nail it. So that I mean that's one answer the insulation above this bedroom this cold is something to check you want to about 15 inch or isn't 15 inches give or take. Blown insulation in their fiberglass or cellulose I like fiberglass but if you have. If you have gable vents on the ceiling above this cold bedroom make sure that their clothes off in the winter if they're facing north that will keep heat. In the you know in the bedroom and not leak through the ceiling as much with northerly facing winds blowing through there but so in a can lever to check the insulation below under the can lever and on top in the attic and that should really help a corner of course a corner bedroom is going to be a little cooler anyway just because you have to expose walls and so just as we talked before about noise you might want to check out the window coverings in the spectrum heavy drapes cellular shades maybe a storm window or something might might help especially bedrooms problematic when it comes to heating because. They're usually a long ways away from the furnace in the furnace room and there's a 90 degree bend in the heat ducks as they snake their way up to the bedroom and that can also mean the bedroom is cold you don't get a lot of hot air flow through those through those vents so there's some ideas for you but can't leavers in an older house especially may not be as well insulated as they should be it's pretty it's pretty much Ok to stuff that that there's kind of a little a little cavity under there where the joists are as I say plywood you pull off you get a flashlight and shine it in there and it's not totally full of insulation I would I cram some in there now when I say cram I want to back off just a little bit if you cram insulation to vigorously Of course you squeeze all the air out of it and that and that obviates to an intention of the insulation in the 1st place so you want to fill up the cavity but don't jam it in there or pack it in there that's a better don't pack it in but just fill up that cavity and that will really help with that cold floor in your bedroom so that's helpful We'll be right back give us a call to real 37138255 right here right around. Rocky Mountains so that's good because it's as I say it's kind of expensive there is a lot of subsidy with flood insurance purple down in places like you know on the Gulf Coast and so on that the federal government subsidizes So guess what you get more homes built in those areas which are more subject to flooding so it's kind of the moral hazard kind of thing people build more in areas where they know there's no there's less jeopardy because somebody else is going to pay the premium on flood insurance just rebuild again like they always say near the Mississippi and but up and here in the Rocky Mountains not really an issue Mike says we have a recurring problem there is a front downspout that freezes up and then overflows. Can I run he tape into it yeah and you know I haven't spent much time this season talking about ice jams and frozen down spots but you sure can problem is you got to thaw the ice out that's in there now but after you get it thawed whether it's an a warm day you might want to wrap heat cable around the outside of the downspout for now and to melt that ice it's inside you can sure sure drop heat cable or heat tape right down through that down spot just leave it in there plug it and leave it in there year round. So really works Well absolutely and in people that have these north facing downspouts by the front door have these kinds of issues and it's not a lot of fun because you get an ice skating rink on your sidewalk and you get overflows in ice jams so heat tape in those areas really works nicely so you can also run the heat tape down through the the pipe underground it serves that downspout and snake it all the way through but you may not be able to do it till spring depends if it's frozen up or and or not and you also want to make sure if if you get a lot of freezing and back up sometimes that pipe the downspout runs into has a belly in it or isn't sloped properly and so it traps water which is Ok in the summertime but in the winter time of course it freezes up and then it starts to back up backwards up through the pipe and up into the downspout into the gutters so you want to check maybe the spraying you can dig up the pipe to make sure it's straight and flat that's why in a critical situation where we don't have a lot of slope in the yard instead of that black polyethylene flex piping Sometimes it's good to use the the the hard white p.v.c. Pipe because you can slope this more easily and it'll stay in a nice constant slope whereas the flex pipe has a tendency to go up and down as you as you backfill with the dirt and so on so. You might want to if you have this freeze up as a chronic thing you might want to dig up that pipe and put p.v.c. In there under your lawn and run a heat tape through the whole thing leave it plugged in you're around and I think you will appreciate having that you have your problems will be over. New homes of course are very energy efficient they have to go through energy rating test and so on but it may be working against you a little bit new homes are sealed so well they don't breathe like older homes. That that you know used to leak air we were really aware of it the builder could install an air exchange control on the furnace it's a little box that will mix the air up it just turns the fan on and off once in a while and it can be supplemented with some a little outside air but they all know what you're talking about air strange control and maybe an air exchange heat exchanger air to air heat exchanger it's a little complicated described on the radio. But getting a little air mixed up in the House really helps if you have teenagers in your family make sure they're using the Bath fans not all teenagers of appreciate the. Benefits of a bath fan they take those endless showers playing the radio you know how that goes and if they're not using the bath and what you could be building up humidity from that of course cooking also your kitchen fan can help if it blows outdoors that is so if we just you know we just by breathing and showering and cooking and living in a house we just produce more Easter it might be helpful to get a little relative humidity. That you know when to recharge is every few nights traditional water softener you could plummet in yourself if you have some skills but I would just do that at least for the hot water in your house your wont it will help your dishwasher a lot in your glasses will not be filming I promise you but it also helps with other other fixtures in the house and showers lavatories that kind of thing and even washing your hands so I think you know this washers without rinse a dispenser in to spray arms is what you look for and. With this one switch up and one down electricity goes down through one with traveler and then when you flip either switch it comes back on the other travel you get the idea so it's a back and forth and so I think you've got a common mixed up with the traveler and the way you tell on those is the odd colored screw on the on the switch on a 3 way switches is the common they'll be 2 and it depends on the switch but the be a gold and 2 bronze or you get the idea that just a just one of a different color in the other 2 of the same the 2 that are on the same are the travelers and you've just gotten a mixed up that's all Ok for them coming out of the will is to black wires and then to ground wire which is their gravity inclination and then the red wire so I guess what those 2 black lines but don't use those 2 saying connections well there should be a 3rd on another wire going out to the light to the light fixture itself. And I know that in 5 of the squires coming out that's it ranters what knock and ground. Ok a red black a ground a neutral white and a ground no red 2 blacks in the ground a red 2 blacks on the ground well what you need to do is what the. One of those blacks goes off by itself with a white wire and the the other black and the Red go off by themselves into a another cable there should be 2 cables coming in their right. But you know I'm going to do a little research on my own but you know that she reminds me there is a filter in the bottom of the dishwasher and that little sump at the bottom the needs to be pulled out and wrenched off once in a while I hope you have been you've been doing that she wants but no what do I think of those tabs besides convenience I kind of like I'm not I've shared this with you a couple of months ago I switched to the Cascade tabs and one night I was running my dishwasher and the pump started making a funny odd sucking kind of sound which I had never heard before and the pump was what we call cavitate ing with too much so too much subsides and not enough water out of liquid and it so is making of so I drained the dishwasher and and refilled it and it kind of settled down so what I discovered was that my rinse a dispenser apparently was adding too much or in Satan so the water was too soft and so the soap suds would not dissolve and go away so I emptied out my rinse a dispenser and just closed it off and now my little pods seem to do a nice job for me so because now the soap suds are more normal so I think you're right Sharon those the little plastic Pods do put a lot of extra lot of soap and a lot of a rinse aid in the in the mix you have to be careful with over sudsing But you know I kind of I get what you're saying a little cascade powder measuring spoon if you may have really soft water share in the maybe contributing to this also but I do like the pods I like the convenience but I'm open to discussion on this if you want to call and say Tell me what you think of the little dishwasher Pasok I do like the fact I just grabbed one and I've not experienced that plastic you know shell not dissolve ing it opens up early enough the water's hot enough I think it just goes away it's a very delicate membrane on the dishwasher Pods as well they don't want you're handling on with. With wet hands so I haven't had that problem but I'd be open to some discussion if you want to call 237138255 if you want to give me some feedback about how your dishes are turning out since I've started using the pods my glassware is beautiful it shiny and you know that feeling when you grab a a a newly washed glass at your kind of a squeaky clean feeling on the outside of a glass so I have no complaints but Sharon I appreciate your sharing that feedback with me but I would also ask that you check your in say dispenser because I think you can just eliminate that part of the cycle you can take a turkey based or and some warm water and kind of open up the dispenser and blow some water in there to kind of rinse it out and make sure that it's all disappeared in and it isn't in the dispenser anymore that the dispensers clean and then you can turn that little dial to off and just use the pods themselves if you'd like so you got some feedback for me on that I'd like to hear from you 303-713-8255 bob sent me an email Bob from Arvada he heard me talk about a lady who sent me an email about a can't leverage bedroom that she has a bed in that sticks out into the air you know with a with a candle lever sticking out from the side of the house that's a really cold bedroom and I talked about insulating the under the floor of the can with a can lever is in on this and insulating the ceiling above and Bob wanted me to remind you in it so I'm glad you did Bob because it should be part of the discussion cold bedrooms need air circulation and generally speaking in most homes there is no cold air return in the bedroom it's out in the hallway someplace and so the air that comes in the heat vents has to circulate back under the door with the door closed and so you want what's called a reveal or. And undercut in the door an inch to an inch and a half is in should have salaamed let's say an inch at least been undercut so the space between the top of the carpet and the bottom of the door I think an inch and a half would probably introduce privacy issues and noise issues and so on but at least an inch and even then a little more than an inch would be good the doors close the air will still circulate and go back into the door and find his way to the cold air return otherwise if the door and the people that replace their carpet sometimes forget about this. And put new nice new tall squishy wonderful new soft pad in and a new high end carpet but that closes up the gap under the bedroom doors and in the bedrooms can get cold and be in the winter and be hot in the summertime because the furnace air is not circulating properly now. If you're lucky enough to have a newer home where in many new homes each bedroom has its own cold air return then that's really great but I most people don't so the undercut of a door a inch or so gap is a big deal and thanks for reminding me of that 303-713-8255 I got a an e-mail and some pictures from a lister named Bud He has a 4 year in his house that's 2 stories high with kind of a clear story window over the front door you've seen you know what I'm talking about where the where the shit rocks wall surface is probably close to 14 maybe even 16 feet tall depending on on the height of the roof and so on and there's some bulges he sent me some pictures of dry wall bulges in but that but the cool thing about it the good news was the bulges were in a straight line and so I emailed Bud back and if you have these in your house if you've got drywall bulges there really not much to worry about particularly in older homes if there are straight line out we worry about zigzag cracks. In a in dry wall it was zigzag you know 45 degree and maybe they shoot off from the corner of a window and go down on the floor those are stress cracks are a little more worrisome but straight line cracks simply mean the weak part of the of the wall which is the seams where the sheet rock comes together that's the weakest part and if there is some stress inside the wall it will telegraph itself and then the bulges will start to show so not to worry about it you just simply you can gouge them out and sand them down a little bit put some dry wall mud in there and retape and re texture if you want or ignore them some people if they're in a are the right place I will take a painted board with the with the fluted edges you know some routed edges on a decorative board and put it over that seam it looks like it belongs there and that's one way to get over this without patching the dry wall but straight line bulge cracks especially in a high wall like that are not a big deal at all so. Anyhow that's the story on dry wall deterioration as the house ages and and cracks and bulges and at least a little seems that start to show you just patching as you need to and and just let it go this is from email here from Thomas. Pressure regulator gizmo just turn it to the left a full turn unscrew it and the pressure should drop by a 2 or 3 pounds you need to check that and if it does then you're pressure regulator is working Ok which you do is you turn it and then stop and let it stabilize go open a faucet somewhere open and close a faucet to restabilize the pressure and you'll check so if it gets lower and lower and lower than Then you know that it's not on the fritz it's working properly and when you get to about 60 pounds or so 55 to 60. Then stop and you've done your adjustment if on the other hand you turn that bolt on top of the pressure regulator and nothing happens then you need a new one so a plumber has to do that for you unless you know how to. Use a couple of pipe wrenches and solder copper pipes and all that so it'll be about thought on 300 bucks give or take maybe a little more 3 to 400 for a new pressure regulator at your house but this is very very important it's like the Anant the analogy or the analog is blood pressure in your body water pressure in your house if it's too high you have problems so you want to just as I say to 55 or 60 pounds if you have a sprinkler system you need a 2nd pressure regulator because that pressure needs to be higher in my house my interior water line pressure is 55 pounds per square inch and in my sprinkler system it's gets around 75 to 80 I want to use my sprinkler system because you want more pressure on the yard so the sprinkler heads throw water a little a little farther so you need to in your house with a sprinkler system to get that pressure knocked down as soon as you can it's just not good to have that high pressure inside your house as if you know again if if you if you knew you had really high blood pressure you'd just some about a really quickly so there you aren't that I'm glad you checked in with me because 80 pounds is really is really too high 303-713-8255 going to check in and talk about any of the things that we've talked about read Fisher is taking your calls producing the program today and be glad to get you on the air in the meantime Larry as my wood fire place always seems to let odor into the house even when we haven't used it for a while the place smells like smoke downstairs. So I would could should we sweep in there they sell various powders an artificial logs that are supposed to get ready or Korea so they don't do really any good because they don't get up high enough into the fireplace flue area itself in the damper area so a chimney sweeps the way to go not terribly expensive now it's if you want to burn harder woods like cedar Aspen and oh they have more b. To use anyway per pound of wood that's better than pine because they don't create as much buildup of creosote and and other combustion products that's what's you know what you're smelling to other recommendations that go along with this it's a good question Larry you should have a set of glass doors over your fireplace opening so that'll help with this odor issue and we a lot of wind around here and when you when wind comes down that chimney is where the odor is coming from with glass doors on their own you won't smell it at all you can also have a metal cap and spark arrestors screen on the top of your chimney I have one in my house is just a metal cap to keep the weather out. If you have a screen you don't want it to be you want to be a very coarse screen so you don't get trapped firebrands and an ash up there in the screen I just have a cap only without a screen but that tends to keep the the the weather out to the snow and rain it also helps to get the wind out so you might think about a flu kept up on top your chimney and the glass doors I hope that was.
