Thanks for being with us welcome to Tuesday distrust between President Trump and Pentagon leadership has reached a near unprecedented level Ben Wolfgang Pentagon correspondent at The Washington Times says both sides of the Potomac are eyeing the other anxiously as Election Day draws near Ben what are sources saying to some degree Gordon it's part and parcel of the Trump era the relationship between Trump and and other officials in the government has always been sort of unprecedented You can go back to Jeff Sessions as the attorney general at the Justice Department where you had trouble well and battling that Attorney General on Twitter on a regular basis a couple of years ago so Trump has always had a different relationship to put it mildly with a lot of other top officials in the government even folks that he has appointed and what you're seeing now is at the Pentagon the top level of the military really hit a new level and sort of mutual distrust of a lot of sources that I talked to in this piece put it because on one side you have President Trump who believes you know seems always I was the station of people in the government are undermining him I don't truly believe you need a gender he said just a couple weeks ago that the top people in the Pentagon don't like him because he's trying to end wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and they just want to keep fighting so they can make money so that obviously something that he believes deeply about some of the military industrial complex and then going the other way the secretary defense Mark as Joint Chiefs Chairman General Milley you know a couple months ago course blocky at Square incident in d.c. You had Secretary Esther and Millie there with the president that ended up being a mistake both of them admitted later on Secretary experts came out and opposed the idea of sending troops to American cities General Milley said it was a mistake. Could be there with President Trump and so that's all of sort of the backdrop of how we got to where we are now which is a situation where the Pentagon is increasingly fearful that they're going to be dispatched after election day if we see protests from either side depending on how things work out if we see civil unrest if we see the situation in Portland spread to other cities after a contentious and disputed election what is the president going to do is he going to try and go back to that playbook that didn't work over the summer to send troops to American cities and we get to that point sort of uncharted territory Gordon I don't think the Pentagon exactly know risk what would happen there but it's something keeping him up at night I can tell you that for sure rights you have is he going to increasing political outspokenness of ex military brass What are we seeing on that front since really it's an unpleasant again I use that as the story but it really is kind of just underscores where we are in 2020 in this in this new era this new this new political era that we're going you have folks not only just retired military generals you know and Pentagon officials across the board criticizing Trump but I think what's been interesting is a lot of folks that the President Trump and even appointed like General Mattis of course who is defense secretary for 2 years has become one of the president's leading critics and you know they would of course say that they feel they have a constitutional and moral obligation a lot of people feel that way about the president quite a lot of people of course in uniform and retired officers back the president as well literally hundreds of them addressed him briefly So just to be fair to point that out as well but what you have is a situation where especially among retired folks in the military officers generals . It's breaking down along partisan lines we seems like every day there's a new endorsement letter that comes out with the Trump campaign or the Biden campaign saying x. Number of retired military affairs that interest me the president and the folks who are still in in the highest levels of the military are concerned that just because somebody else is. So my sense of the polling is this though that the one that made the most news just in the past 24 hours is the national poll . By n.b.c. Of registered voters well both of those things need to take a be taken into account for understanding Well what are we looking at and we don't vote our elections are just decided nationally they're decided electorial electorally So a national poll really doesn't need much because you don't know where those voters are coming from they could you know there could be a concentration of people from Chicago New York and California that was throw the entire thing off it could even be as granular as cities and not enough voters so that's why that show poll you know I'm skeptical of those it's also of registered voters that you need to really get down to someone who has voted in the last 4 elections to see who was likely to turn out right but even that's a problem Glenn because those are the there were a lot of voters this in 2016 because in our book The Great revote there were these voters we cope apparently starts their sort of like a better process because they only get there I occasionally come but they only come out every 100 years right. And those people are picked up by pollsters because if a poster is trying to do a really good poll and find a low likely voter and they get them on the phone and say hey if you go to the last 2 elections they're like No there John. And so there's there's this and they made up 6 per cent of Trump's winning coalition in Pennsylvania Ohio Michigan Wisconsin and Iowa so there is a you know I'm I'm always sort of earlier e of them not being part of the universe and finally between nationally about one and a half percent of Trump though there's or shy Trump voters in other words they don't tell a pollster that they're supporting him I'm surprised that I'm surprised is that low Well that's nationally in Pennsylvania Ohio Michigan. And Wisconsin in our book there's a poll in the back a survey of just voters and they say 34 percent of them did not tell a family member. Or a pollster that they were going to vote for him holy cow and that was even if he were the Disney movie compared to today oh yeah oh yeah. So when you're going through Pennsylvania and you're hearing and Ohio and Wisconsin and Michigan and you're you're listening to people are you hearing people that say I didn't vote for him before but I am now. Obviously I live in Pennsylvania we've never had valid voting for in this state until June primary we had absentee balloting but it was like so restrictive and punishing to do it that only 4 percent of people. On on an average basis now and then our primary June it was almost 50 percent of the people and while the process if doing it was not that bad in terms of getting your you know ballot and mailing it in the problems became a once the different county offices had your ballot there are completely unprepared I don't know why because certainly there were you know our our our primary was delayed several months so the preparation should have been there nonetheless with the exception of Allegheny County Pittsburgh almost every county went days if not weeks before the final results came in and you know that's something you could be the decider I think it's the time Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to be honest and so across you know we're in a like weeks like December before we know that's a. Big problem people have a level of expectation that they do their job and go through all the hoops and loops to vote why not just government to fill that same obligation I will tell you Celine I have to tell you I think what the Democrats have done and what the media is currently doing saying. That not only is expecting a result on election night wrong but it is dangerous and then trying to tell us that this is a.
