Gone and said. We know he doesn't give a shit. Critics and. The thing. Is to. Do. This in the. Piece in the. It's full of the. Do and then day. And. Welcome to the hank in the pocket as Hank Haney Minnesota Tim Brodsky and the great protector Steve Johnson here with you today how you fellows doing. Do pretty good Hank. I got a news bulletin the. Breaking news here in Dallas that. This is not political but it's infringing on our rights here what's that I was listening to the radio on the way to work this morning and on Fox Sports they've got they're rolling out a show called the Saturday strong sports show really I thought there was a name in your show then it isn't a that that's a name that I thought though that was the moniker the you gave us it was a Saturday strong County John called it Saturday bold but we were going to go the Saturday bold because Saturday strong and now Fox Sports 2 we get the show attorneys to research that for us I thought you stole it from somebody else actually that's why I thought because we're using it we stole it from somebody else so that it was ours. And I don't know Tim who came up with that you are Steve I think Steve came up with that name for the Saturday strong you know Ok now you guys have been strong on Saturdays which is good but Fox is low bigger you know want to go against them in court Yeah I mean you know we've we've got a history we've done 37 weeks in a row we were on a roll Oh that's pretty good actually now I think maybe they you know made us feel like that's a generic kind of thing or Samana year you have a good point I think your you should put a claim on that Ok trademark a trademark and yeah I'm thinking we got some special stuff we're going to talk about today. We understand that. You know some people bend the rules a little bit. Steve you know me I'm not a rule Bender No no you're not a real Bender Yeah. Yeah I would you consider yourself a real bender. Oh I would be 100 percent honest here yeah yes I've signed I'm a skirting along the you know that that line yeah the line from appropriate to inappropriate I get a little bit too close to the line sometimes really oh yeah yeah I got it completely since Anonymous on a submission I appreciate that yeah. My agent Jeremy is a he's a rule breaker Well he really well. Here's the thing what a lot of people do and that's what Jeremy does when he hears a rule he immediately like analyzes that rule now I do that too I mean I think most who are you know sometimes I analyze or aunts and that's a stupid rule and then but but then I adhere to the rule because a rule is a rule what Jeremy does says is he and I analyze a rule doesn't think it's a good rule and then he figures out immediately he's he's trying to figure out how he can work around the rule there's got to be a work around as to how to be a way to get around this rule I'm like that's not waste our time I'm getting around the rule it's just the rule it's a stupid rule but you know it's the rule so anyway you know we buy every body is different I mean my wife as a rule bender for sure I mean she just you know she doesn't think the rules are really rules I mean I'm like it's a rule we're not going to break the rule but you know everybody's everybody's a little different now Tim Where would you fall in this category I am definitely a rule follower However I don't necessarily know what the rules are so wow. Man that was a little set up question wasn't it Steve I mean I definitely add a little spice to my rules Ok Ok well the reason. We asked that questions because we understand that you add in a little incident at a golf course. Private country clubs not correct Steve Yeah that's that's what I've heard in you know I mean this is like a this show I would classify Hank as a public service show because like Tim said he is a rules follower he just doesn't know any better so there may be some middle school kids or some elementary school kids out there that are going to this show is going to be a great. Reference for them because just like tim i mean sometimes you just don't have enough experience and you just don't know you just don't know. And I claiming ignorance is that that doesn't work doesn't well it depends on your age your dad doesn't it does not work in a court of law no you can't just you can't come of ignorance I didn't I didn't know that I didn't know that was the law right now and that Sana I don't think that's of the fence but anyway. What what exactly let's talk about those like country clubs have rules and they have dress codes a lot of times those dress codes are you know pretty pretty stupid I talked about my issue I had a couple years ago 1st time I went out to the. Country Club and I showed up there are not been a member for a few months never play golf show up now and the guy says and meets me I'm carry my clubs in and the guy meets me there and he says What do you know Mr Rayney we haven't seen you before as yes my 1st time out he said what we're going to do today as a louse going to I was going to play and he goes. Now we have a ladies tournaments and I'm like All right that's Ok can I have some balls he says yeah you can it's Mahler's never been here before what do I do he says well you just go out to the range in the you know all balls are all out there and you just help yourself is not great I'll go out to the range a nice time hit Moslem up 15 minutes later the guy comes out and he says Mr tuck your shirt in. And I'm like. A but I mean you know I didn't have my shirt tucked in when I walked up here and you know 1st I would say 114 degrees outside it feels good to have a little air in there but anyway plus it's really kind of a style to be honest with you and you know I mean but Ok so you got a Tucker shirt and he says yeah now I said I did have a tuck there when I walked up Even same thing you see a Kentucky and I look over and the guy next to me Steve you heard me tell a story and I look at him and he's got a shirt untucked and I lean over and I say Bond. Me his shirts not tucked in and he leans in. Real close he whispers he says he can't get it tucked in mood he says you I said you got to tuck your shirt in and washers so fat you can't talk it in to my man seriously so I talk you know I took my shirt and no problem Yeah you know I knew you were going to tell me you took your shirt in Did Mia Oh of course I did yeah yeah I mean I just talk there right in sure enough you know and every time I go out there every time I go out there I'm tucked it in you know. You know. I'll tuck in you know maybe maybe not wear a belt you know like it's a little protest you know. What I'm saying because because of you're going to if we're going to talk you're certain you've got to wear a belt but you know just to look decent but you know a lot of protest time I took my shirt in with no belt but yeah my talkin no problem every time I'm 65 now it would be 52 years I've been doing country clubs and I have to say that even to this day Country Clubs make me uncomfortable to 52 years later you know having worked at memory and been members that many of them some of them really really nice Luckily for me I've been a member Adam but you know is like do I have to take my hat off come in here. Can I have my had you know backwards or can my guest have a hat on backwards or got trouble another time with that problem when one of my guests had his hat on backwards so 10 had the country club incident we're going to talk about that we're going to get into it he helped himself is pretty much what he did is what I understood and. We're going to hear his version of this and we're going to hear the real version of those because I think we got it we got a pretty good handle on what happened. All right so let's let's tell the story 1st Steve you want to tell the real version or you want to me to tell the virtue listen to little of Tim start a song because it's much better when we can no let's let him walk himself out everyone let us walk himself out on the on the limb and then we'll cut that limb on kind of all right Ok. All right so I was so there's a country club near my apartment in St Louis Park Minnesota and I was going for a run one day and I was I stopped looked at the golf course I looked at the driving range and I literally just saw golf balls sitting on the driving range Ok and I understand that it's a country club and that you need to you know it's it technically have to be a member there but. Technically. Well technically speaking you got to be a member there at a country club and it's thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars but here we go Ok so I have this insane energy to grind on the driving range Ok I just want to grind and improve my game and grow the sport of golf I mean I watch the television I watch golf every week and everything you know you tell me you never hear you tell me you never hit golf balls Tim. Yes before my round for my Ok Before my round I never hit golf ball but when I'm not playing my round I love to grind either in the Field of Dreams of My parents yard I'm hittin sandwiches from tree to tree or a love to go to golf courses and just hit shot after shot figuring out the ins and outs and sequences of my golf swing so I know I was like man there's just golf ball sitting there and there's no gate there's no gate at the golf course so I drove up nobody stopped me because there was no gate I walked over to the driving range and I just hit golf balls because there were golf ball sitting there you just was I seriously just went to a private country club I was drawn there I saw balls on the range and I just wanted to get better. Oh Mark cons so you just started I just started it and. What happened what happened I have nothing nothing happened I just hit golf balls Nobody said in nobody said anything nobody was you were how many people were on the range. There was one other guy on the golf on the range in a car and you just hit for how long did you know I had for about 30 to 45 minutes and then would you do you just left or what Yeah I walked back to my car because it's all I wanted to so I could see the driving range from the road that I was running on and. What I didn't want to do was create any fuss I wanted to act like I was a regular So I showed up in the Polo I wore jeans I talked in the post you wear jeans Yeah I wore jeans I wanted to look like a right I don't know many golf courses that let you wear jeans on the golf course Steve you know no I mean the Discover the discovery properties you can you know I know for a fact your place up in Flagstaff and I can let you do the the jeans on the golf course now is one of the big That was one of the big rules at Muirfield Hey no no I know denims of any kind even a even for dinner Yeah even for dinner no no don't denims Ok but but some courses old that lets you go denims on the to eat like at Flagstaff you know it kind of pine can you can it Arizona Ok if you can but you can't go never you know w. No denims on the golf course for sure codenames no cut offs. You know no a lot of times you know your shorts have to be a certain length. To get someplace has got a no car go short rule there's a lot of you know collared shirt you got to have that takuji and belt you know whatever I mean they got a lot a lot of rules had on front ways no you know no backwards sideways hats Yeah my hat was forward I wanted to be as president of all and respectable when you wore blue jeans 1st off you you you went to a country go but you're not a member of you understand what the word private means the door so he does he does he didn't know t. Doesn't know the word Hank you know it can't. I think we've let Tim get out on the limb fair enough can I take the silent Intel a full story here yeah tell me this time Ito Ok what really happened is that doesn't sound like it's what really happened. In any he may have been jogging and saw the balls out there and all that I'm not I'm not questioning his honesty in that but let's go back to the full story 1st of all Tim is the producer of one of the best pod casts in the world he's well known as Minnesota Tim and the reason he's well known is that is because you gave man name Hank Minnesota Tim started back home when Sirius x.m. Everyone called the Minnesota Tim because you gave him that name and so. One of the pros there at that golf course invited Tim out to play Ok one time one time yeah and it was great it was a great occasion not this this is not the time we're talking about right now no no this is not the time this is not this is a kid Tim was running to. This is a previous time right so you had been there oh wow Ok so you what he thought he meant he thought he was and he'd given him a membership or something well I mean I'm not there once I'm not quite sure but the pro there said hey Minnesota Tim your love to have you come out and play with us we'll see his you know Z's Minnesota Tim because he listens to the podcast Ok so fair enough so he goes on plays and Tim wears his cargo shorts he's not not shaven doesn't he doesn't his shirt I don't think he has an iron Steve on that point I'm not sure I'm not sure how tempted to confirm or not do you have an iron I can confirm that I do not have an iron bar knew it a number of iron. Ok to none and I said you know because I know it doesn't everyone Somaya your Ptolemy Tammy's iron shirt but I don't think he has an iron Ok well for him when he maybe when he gets married will go you know most people get a toaster will give him an iron maybe he'll inherit one sunstroke that's true I'm a matter of fact we're going to send him an iron you need ironing board he's going to ironing board to yank you to do it on the table whatever I mean you know who. You know how to iron Tim even though you don't own I not iron Yeah I'm an expert iron or. That for you don't own one but no Ok Ok you don't have an iron so that's why it's shirts that's why a shirt looks like so I tried to get my tried to give me you know I'm 60 years old I'm twice the age of Tim I'm trying to pass on a little wisdom and he's resisting it every and every suggestion I have he's resisting what outfit gnowledge stuff so he tells me that he gets invited to the course and I suggest great that the reason you got invited was because a headache. He didn't really realize that you didn't say that that's Ok but you didn't realize that you didn't realize it that the reason you got invited to play this course Minnesota Tim was because of your relationship with Hank who's proud I was probably pretty accurate or yeah you hear it and then even though you're not on the clock and you're not doing a show you're out in public when you're in this situation Tim I tried to explain you're representing Hank here do you understand that I understand that yes attempt to get on himself he saw the balls out there he couldn't help it he had the urge to grind he went out there he knew that. He says he didn't but he knew that he was the he was stretching it was a stretch for him to go out there he didn't tell the guy by the way the guy that invited him to play the 1st time he didn't have to tell him that he was coming out there to grass so he didn't get invited no and it was no invitation I was not that the guy ever say to you. Hate him if you ever want to come out and hit balls just come a time and help yourself he did not but I thought that I was growing the spinny say I got him Tim censure Minnesota Tam we're going to give you a free membership at this Country Club do you ever say well no he didn't but I was there to say this is a private country club but you have to be a member but you don't have to be a member temp just come and help yourself he did not I was not to confirm it was not. While So anyway so as as would as you would probably guess hankies out there grinding on the driving range getting better growing the slowly getting around the sport yes thank you for all the support what he's really doing what he's really doing is he's he's infringing on private property is what he's doing so. The pro happened to see him I tried to give him some some advice here Hank but he just he wouldn't have it he wouldn't he wouldn't he wouldn't listen he wouldn't listen I was from there and though I was ready I came prepared to the golf course I was ready to I was ready to move it will wait a move where you move where he had some strategies what he's trying to say he he figured Ok if someone comes up in questions me he had it he had 2 or he had 2 or 3 different approaches I don't know I want to I want to I want to hear the lot so we'll take a break and when we come back going to hear Thames strategies for if he got if he got a question I'm sure this is going to be priceless. Tim let's hear what you got what was. Your plan so I had to come in with the plan that we've previously teased to talk about because I mean let's face it I mean it's a place that I haven't been to often and the Although the issue was that place because there was no gate I mean if there's no gate and there's golf balls on the range a golf addict like that's that's the whole main premise you're using that for this whole thing that it's Ok because there's no gate Yes it's a bizarre sign is there a sign is it's a private country club I did not see a sign I. Am There is one in no say Country Club and it's a private you never you know what the word private means. Yes Ok I'm just checking Ok so plan number one this is if this is this a pro if the pro drove up and you got questioned by somebody is out with the deal if that's the deal Ok so strategy number one I was going to speak with an accent so if he came up to me and told me what I'm doing here with blue jeans and a polo and shorts and a belt that don't match I was going to talk to him in an x. And I would be like I need from you a pia I. Ever. I don't know. Place that I have you're going to do that I see golf ball on range I want to grind . He's cool with the foreigner. Approach he was going to play because they don't pretend he was a foreigner pretty good isn't it in my you know speak English I speak no English no man Ok Well right now that's pretty weak right there I what was what was your other plan what would go up that didn't work what were going to go Ok so buy back up plan so this is number 2 and this is a more risky option because I don't know what they know Ok I don't know what they know because that's I mean that's the biggest risk so I was going to pretend that I was deaf you were deaf. As death so if it came up so when I was talking to you you couldn't you couldn't hear I could well I can I mean deaf people can read lips right I mean yes so but deaf people know silent which And I don't really know sign language so I would kind of do the hand signals like Rory McILROY does on the public usually come with the full he's going to come with the full hand signals Oh my God this is what So before you help yourself in a private club you came up with a plan in case you got found out or caught or kicked you know kicked off or questioned and these are the main You're going to be there pretend you are a foreigner or you're going to pretend you couldn't here yes. Ok well what if those 2 didn't work did you have a 3rd option I mean or you know what were you you're marking this all out in your mind I was workin all of this in my mind just in case you know just in case for emergency so number 3 and this one is more simple it's more basic I was just going to act like a complete moron I was going to act like I didn't know I was going to act like you know I wasn't so which is a grind and get closer to that. But not really what's up yeah it was closer to the truth but not really yeah that's closer to the truth. Oh man let me explain something to you here. Yeah I told you that's what he's going to say but. Let me explain some here to you. Private means it's private you just don't go help yourself Ok that's number one number 2 number 2 is is you're going to get the pro whoever and invited you in the 1st place out to this place in trouble that's just the way it is him meaning. He's the one because they're going to like like you don't understand when somebody and Steve you know this right yeah when when when you invite somebody out Ok they invite somebody in there you bring somebody with you Steve a few bring a guy with you like save a few and I are doing some and you break somebody is a tagalong you know how that guy gets labeled immediately right Steve yellow yeah he's my man he's mine is your man yes he's your man that's it he's your He's a media elite your man. If you Steven are going somewhere say I got a buddy going to come on I sit on Bring him on I said he's your man what that means to him is I am personally responsible for anything that this guy does yeah this guy's not color Joe if this guy is not dressed Yeah I hope really if this guy's a noxious I pay a price for it that well that's just the way it is he's your man right exactly guys will exempt then yeah yeah now. When when people work for me or with Me Ok they become my man like Steve's my man. Minnesota Tim is my man I mean I've inherited you guys as my men so this is this is this guy that invites you out there some time to play like you're his guy. Who's Minnesota Tim He's so and so's man he's a guy had him out here before and now he thinks he can just come all the time so this is the problem you put the guy in a in a bad not Mo I mean honestly it you know when people what do you think people are going to say when they say all that that's Minnesota Tempe we're going to say what's the next question are going to say. Who's Minnesota Tim Yeah Ok then one of the going to say Steve they're going to say he's Hanks man exactly he sank and he's a man. With the say so so that this is just the reality of life but I mean this is just the way it is so that. You're putting a couple people like on the line here when you go do something like that I'm just getting this is just a life lesson for you Steve explained they are probably going to get a speech on a life lesson Steve heard some of these life lessons before you know. That's just the way it that's just the way it is so so now if this guy even if this guy runs a place let's say this guy is the head probably I don't know what this guy is he's a head pro if he's the teaching pro whatever he might be Ok but he's he's workin for somebody if he's attorney teaching pro then he's working for the head pro and he's had pros man that's just it's your Somebody is Man Ok so he you know if the teaching pro invites you he's the head pros man if the head pro is is is work and there he's the general manager man. You know it's just there's always somebody that's that's above this person the troll or whatever is not going to say to whoever questions me like say well he's deaf he didn't know where they're not going to say well he's a foreigner or he didn't know or they're not going to say I mean I invited this guy out to play golf one time you know he's an absolute idiot he thinks he's you know if he thinks he can just come up for 3 well he thinks. 3 He thinks he can just come any time he wants now and he says he's just game and covered all bases it's going to say Steve you know that's what he's going to say and you know how apologize I mean you know and that's but the problem is is. The head pro does everything Steve you about you're head pro for a long time oh yeah it's a small community out there Hank the members No 2 who's that guy the No one recognizes act there right and Steve you're I was a director golf when you were in the head pro so if I walked on a driving range I would look over and what would I say if I saw somebody out there that maybe didn't belong definitely get a phone call definitely get a phone call Who's the guy out there with jeans on the chat there grinding on the driving range right handed on the driving range you would you would be on the lookout for guys like that absolutely because you knew that you know somebody would say stop me either I would say some or you know there be some you know Board of Directors like all these country clubs have these board of directors that do nothing but screw up country clubs and they're all just a bunch of like you know I mean there but there are kin to a mall cop Well a board of director and you know they are yeah and you know they all think they know everything about God every country club has them you know except well run country clubs they don't have a board of directors but country goes every board of directors have all these guys out there they you know they they're in this position they think they're they own the club you know all the Ours is a member that you know volunteered or whatever to be a board a director and now they think they're in charge of the place and one of their jobs as Board of Directors is is to watch the driving range and make sure nobody would jeans shows up out there yeah you know I mean you know and Steve you but you know you and I don't domicile is his you know they're all you know all the same there's you know you go you met one board of director you no matter mom you're listening to the handkerchief I guess let's take a brief pause to hear from our sponsor. Me There are some way from a house next to the course that's a member or somebody that is you know was playing the course called in and told the pro shop that somebody is out there on the 14th hole at their hat on backwards Mark she's always saying how big the all the all the clubs are the sets the thing that Tim doesn't realize they're all exactly the same and that you know they know exactly who should be there who shouldn't be there and when Tim I mean word of what I'm afraid of Hank is it just him just does not know where to stop to say great learning a lesson is a great learning lesson. Don't play but I hang and I mean I just want to know I mean so seriousness I want to know where does this stop where does this stop does it stop when she get in the clubhouse does a stop when she get to the pool where does it stop what about the Buffet he could get out would you say Stevie can go for Friday night both Hey maybe you could just call for a reservation for reservation even if it's all. I am Tom Holland. 10 more strength training tips Yes that is the title and the topic of today's show . Talking about strength training I was doing it and I was if I may say so myself and I will the most recent show I did on strength training and it's mental. Depression anxiety I mean if you haven't listen to that show. And it's just. Amazing the benefits of cardiovascular exercise that so far exceed just weight. And strength training. I'm going to do there's so many more shows to do because there are many more benefits that are similar to the depression and anxiety that you might not and most likely haven't thought of or heard of and that's another show but today is 10 more strength training tips to help you what maximize your results maximize your enjoyment maximize your adherence to your program so you stick to it and to help you vary your routine give you some ideas and let me say this want to throw out just I friend John who started listening to the show and John was you know a fit guy an athlete and you know like so many people fell out of his routine a little bit and he started listening to the show and you know I often say just follow the seemingly simple advice the simple steps make those changes over time consistently see what happens and he has had incredible results and you know he said when I see you on a regular basis and it makes me you know really happy to see people benefiting from their you know labors and I get super frustrated with this business when people who have no business giving advice do and there's a huge huge group of those people in this business which is why another one of my. Jobs is being a fitness expert in lawsuits because things oftentimes go wrong when they when they should and that's the extreme people getting injured I don't want you to get injured that's a huge part of my advice I also want you to get like my friend John the results from putting the work in but you got to follow the recipe. And it there are no secrets in John even you know give me feedback about certain shows and he gave me the feedback about a recent show and he's like great and your final takeaway was you know whenever you want to do it basically whenever you can do it let's talk about the best time to run you know went through that that's the answer so I went through the science in this and that is this show it's talking about the science going Ok here's what science says but like what does that matter How does that apply to your life how does that apply to your goals and do we need to use that advice that research to actually get you to your goal so when it comes to the best time of day to run at the end of the day pun intended whenever you do it consistently and that is what so many podcasts are so many fitness experts with quotation marks they say there are no she crits per se there are no hacks there's a hack the person giving the secret and that's going to be by philosophy going forward you're going to you're going to hear that I'm going to go to the science but then we're going to figure out does that apply to you and how does it apply to you and so today it's 10 more strength training tips simple changes ideas concepts to help you maximize your results I don't like going to the gym and seeing the same people walking the same still being injured potentially injuring themselves it drives me nuts we're going to help them with the show let's get right into it 10 strength training tips you can be able to apply all of them right away and I promise you if you do them consistently you will see results and you might be doing some already but you need to be doing most of the use at some point in time. For variation and just to keep your you know your mental game on top you get bored doing the same thing and your body doesn't respond the same after it gets acclimated to the same stressors and if you've already achieved your goals. Most people have it and you know as we get older it becomes more and more important to apply these principles are right number one is just simple tips and tricks you know I've said it many times I don't even like the word tricks but you know it just helps clarify if need be so number one is attachments change the attachment so this goes for those of you who are going to the gym and using the cable machines or some people have those at home so cable machine would be something like doing a cable row or a lap pole down right but you know shot hundreds of exercises for different fitness apps over the years with just this the number of variations you have with a cable machine it's insane so when we're talking about let's just talk about like the. Pull down right so most people see that picture and it's often done wrong by the way the lap pull down behind the neck did a show about that's one of the most photographed pictures in fitness I would argue the lap pulled down behind the neck so it's the long bar right and then there's generally handles that come down at it like a $45.00 degree angle and you pull it down for a back exercise but you shouldn't pull it down behind your neck and the more that can be stressful on the shoulder joint and it's no more beneficial than pulling it down correctly to the front of your chest but I digress so that is one way right you get the long bar you do a lap pull down well you can take the close grip in the 2 handles still a back exercise but you are hitting your back muscles differently. One of my favorite ones to do now is the rope to use the rope instead of the lap pull down bar the y. Grip bar and that for me especially as I get older I feel it you've got to go much much later by the way much later and it just it will feel different so again people say oh it hits different muscles yes but no you're basically hitting the same muscles when you do this stuff you're just hitting them in a different way Ok you're hitting them stressing them differently challenging them so again change the attachment and you go for the cable row where you're seated seated cable row right still a back exercise the angle is different but you've got the rope you've got the v. Bar you've got the straight bar you've got the bar with handles you've got a close grip attachment so that is one simple yet super effective way to change your back exercise so let's just keep it with the back ups are sized to keep it simple but it can't be Groundhog Day at the gym or at your home gym you need some variation and yes this is where it gets a little slippery in that there's maintenance you get to a point in your life where you're like Ok You know you don't have to go crazy with variation I did that whole show on muscle confusion but there is physiological and psychological benefits to doing that to mixing up your routine and I just enjoy the heck out of it I know the problem though for many people is you have seen results doing certain exercises you know that's not talked about enough so people are like well I've achieved these results doing these exercises so I need to continue doing the exact same thing and the answer is actually no now you need you could still do some of that but you need that little bit of variation. You need that little bit of just tweaking just enough that the body goes something a little different and it doesn't have to be huge I say that over and over again doesn't have to be huge amount of weight there's nothing hugely and intense and that's what this shows about right now all right these little changes will be the variation you need Ok so change the attachment change the attachment that goes for tricep press downs to sometimes tricep press downs with the cable machine and use the rope you can use the v. Bar you can use that short straight bar and you can do that with either supine grip or a prone grip so palms facing up palms facing down so many different ways all tricep exercises but different Ok so change the attachment so easy so effect All right quick break we'll be right back. I Heart Radio goes one on one with live stuff about how he really grew into loving music my 9th and 10th grade year I've played baseball and I was a pretty good athlete but I hit my growth spurt and I grew like weirdly and I lost all my coordination I couldn't run and I had like my knees were all. So then you know I kind of started my band and what's interesting is my 12th grade year of high school I just decided to rehearse for a one act play and that was my only year that I truly truly got involved with drama but I'm actually glad that happened because it did kind of it took me off the path of not being that initially looks it started making me focus on the people listening to i Heart Radio 4 more loop and all your favorite artists. All right number to. Time your rest periods right through this in here for several reasons Number one there's so many people who say you know but at the time to go to the gym for an hour or they'll say I go to the gym for an hour 5 days a week and I'll look at them and again think you should have better results and one problem is the amount of work that's actually done so this is just it's almost like it's a very analogous to keeping a food journal greatest works of fiction ever done totally disagree with the and I know many nutritionists and he's even personal trainers who. In my opinion there were not a nutritionist or I wasn't a nutritionist when I was starting out as a personal trainer so people were told to keep 3 day journal you either totally change what you eat you lie a little bit and it's usually a mix of the 2 now yes over the years I would tell people hey keep a 3 day journal what you eat but I don't want to see it I want you to be aware of what you eat and I don't want you to change what you eat but it's still just the act the mere act of doing it oftentimes people change what they do all right so when you time your rest periods many of you are going to realize how much time you waste Now I'm not saying that you can't talk to people in the gym if that's where you go or you know if you're working at home watch a little t.v. You know do so as you're working out take rest periods of course but it's just a lesson too in how you can get a really really good workout in in a short amount of time so when people say Oh it only worked out for 30 minutes like why are you saying only you know if you take 32nd rests in between strength moves or any move for that matter and that's generally what you need again if you're late powerlifting different for the vast majority of people 30 to 60 seconds and 60 seconds is generally a long time so try this one time if you are someone who goes to the gym or you have a routine you do at home dumbbells weights whatever it is try to stick to 30 seconds what's really cool is you know there are machines at the gym some of the machines I use they have timers built right in it while to realize that these machines they weren't front and center but it's like I'm like oh wow 30 seconds up aready Here we go and that's why when you take a class where they use those type of intervals that's why you find it hard people that even necessarily that the instructor will it's just that you are being kept to a schedule so try that time your rest periods it will just teach you about the value of time and it will show you about the value of shorter work outs and that you do not need. To go an hour 75 minutes 90 minutes if you want to also you have that time and you have that social aspect in and you're seeing the results that's important you don't have a bunch of injuries you aren't in you know pain throughout the day certain things that can be fixed then that's Ok but most people need to tighten their routine All right. Number 3 change your grip No I already kind of spoke about this with the attachment but there's even more subtleties to it and this is a perfect example of subtleties that make huge change so what does that mean so a lot pulled out so if you are doing a lot of pull down that I was talking about earlier and you're always doing it with your palms facing away from you try it with your palms facing you and generally speaking you're going to move your hands in a little closer and this goes for so many different types of exercises right you can do bicep curls and what I like to do with that and this is again subtleties is you're not flipping your hand prone versus supine but you're going to change your grip with each rep so here's a fun little like technique you know way to change your barbell bicep curl so start with your normal hand position and then every rep go a little closer every rep is like half an inch closer to what you're doing $10.00 to $15.00 repetitions your final reps your hands are almost touching and then you can do it the opposite way you start with your hands almost touching and then every repetition half an inch to an inch to the outside so by the time you get to that 10th 12th 15th repetition your hands are nice and wide right they're such a great way to challenge your biceps in a different way. And that gets you results All right so change your grip so many different ways to do that and again if you're doing a bicep curl with a straight bar if you go palms facing down now you're getting more of your forearms by the way the hammer curl type thing more forearms So by changing your grip your hand position you're going to stress those muscles and a different way that is going to continue to give you results Ok Number 4 this was also a question I received from somebody was talking about unilateral exercises and it's one of the things that has kept me injury free I've talked about it on many different podcasts unilateral is using one leg or one arm at a time there's a time and place in a reason for that and one main reason is if we always do bilateral exercises if we do squats with both legs at the same time generally speaking one of our arms our legs stronger than the other so by doing unilateral exercises it hopes to fix those imbalances and in some people it's huge and in a quite many years ago who would do dumbbell curls and one hand would go up almost immediately and the other hand would take like 5 seconds so much differently that was an extreme example but we all were you know unless you're working on it and you should be have those imbalances and by fixing those imbalances through unilateral exercise makes all the difference so sometimes if you're using machines especially. Sometimes you're going to do bilateral exercises sometimes you're going to do you know out Ok So an example would be and I may use the lower body because it's simple you can do it with the upper body as well if you are using a leg extension machine and I hear people scream right away should never use that I disagree topic for another show Ok leg extension exercise most people will do both legs at the same time if you have the freedom depends on the machine to do one leg at a time that's one great way to really start to bulletproof your body and so many lower leg issues are those weaknesses and imbalances So again leg extension machine one leg at a time and what happens there you again have to really lower the weight but if you're doing throughout a number 80 pounds with both legs you know it's going to be 40 pounds somewhere or less maybe a little more depends on your strength but or how heavy you're going for bilateral but that's just a great way to do it and if you're working out twice a week one day a week is unilateral one day a week is bilateral leg curls same thing if you're on a hamstring leg curl machine bilateral one day unilateral the next leg press nother great example bilateral one day another one where that weight and do one leg at a time now let me say this if you're pressed for time don't do the unilateral that day takes twice as long as people and so when I see give you an example and I see people doing dumbbell chest presses with one dumbbell at a time why that's already unilateral Now I understand I can get into the maybe physiological reasons people are doing it and most aren't doing it for the reasons that I would give you but I don't want to get into right now it's sort of you know out with dumbbells so again when we're trying to maximize our time there are times to not do unilateral exercises so if you are like 20 minutes to do my strength training today. Not today necessarily to do you know after you have a little more time because you are going one limit a time that's the day to do the unilateral and let me just start there as I was preparing the show I don't use the lower body machines anymore almost for my lower body but I did for years now I'm just saying that because there are so many professional athletes and who changed the way they did things I got strong using those never I didn't hurt myself I did a mix so now my workouts are just shorter and I'm not saying never I will jump in every now and again to do it but much less frequently but my point is there's value to it I still believe so so when someone says you I never do that machine Yeah but that person did it for years now I'm saying correctly hopefully So in other words I built a base of strength with machines and that's generally how it happens people that's how you start to build strength in machines where you don't have this crazy freedom of movement less chance of getting injured the elderly What do you think rehabilitation you know doesn't have people doing you know box jumps out of the you know out of the gate and things like that so there is value to machines talked about that before but I wanted to say that because I'm always going to give you my honest experience personally and with my clients. So I'm more about bodyweight squats now lunges you know more say the term functional I believe all strength is functional though. And it's just more simple I don't enjoy my leg workouts as much as I do I'm a guy right but I know the value of them so my lower body workout is primarily now to keep myself injury free to allow my self to keep running and doing all those kind of things but I did heavier leg presses back in the day when I was bodybuilding things like that so I don't want you to say well he doesn't do them now so I should know I did for a long time I think that's a really important point the way. All right quick break when we come back on our last handful of tips and I'm telling you if you're not doing these and you start to throw them in you can see that for the record. On everything about fitness but I just love strength training good it's rid of you know aches and pains I do get that you know. Of the feel good hormones that we usually think about with cardio as I talked about in the pod cast about strength training depression and anxiety so yeah I've been doing this for a really long time and I will be doing it forever you know I want to be doing. Push ups until the day I die and I well all right so where are we number 5 number 5 so this is just a way to kind of structure your workout and I go by feel so Number 5 is sometimes if you're doing like a full body workout and you're doing $2.00 to $3.00 exercises per body parts in other words you're doing 3 exercises for your chest some days do all 3 in a row other days 23 circuits and this is what I've been doing forever and I just go by the way I feel that day so in other words like some days I'm like Ok I generally start on this chest press machine so I do that and then I might go do dumbbell chest press and I'll finish with a 3rd and then other days I think I just I don't want to do 3 back to back and that day I will do a chest exercise a back shoulder a bicep tricep and then I'll repeat the circuit and it's a mental thing and this is another technique tip that is not talked about enough so much of this is just mental and it allows me to enjoy that session more so much we had to do it a certain way all the time as you are told by so many fitness people this is you know we know you can't possibly do it this way and my question was this Why let me just keep asking you the physiological questions and justify that in exercise science terms All right so go by feel one day you're like yeah I'm up for like doing 3 sets of chess then I'm going to do 3 sets of back you know whatever way you're doing it if you're doing 2 sets 3 sets then you go you know what today I just want to do a circuit and you keep moving to the mental side as well we can never forget that is it is the most important thing if you're not enjoying it if you're not doing it the way you know that makes you want to do it you're going to do it long term so super important All right number 6 it ties in with number 5 sometimes you can superset. So superset this is interesting because superset is one of those terms if you look at up there's so many different definitions and I polled mine out of one of my textbooks from many years ago the essentials of strength training conditioning you know the n.s.c. Is a national strength and conditioning associations book on strength training and their definition is a superset uses the performance of 2 exercises that activate opposing or in tag in this that muscle groups with no rest between each exercise you know what the heck is that so basically supersets many people call them or define them as being doing 2 exercises right after each other and the same body parts so you do you know chin ups and then you do a set of bicep curls with no rest in between now I don't care like you know people go oh you're using the wrong term. But for my purposes superset for me is doing the antagonistic muscle groups and I kind of take out the one with no rest in between that's the official definition at least according to essentially of strength training Additionally here's what I'm going to throw out there my way of doing it is my way a superset is what I just said so we're doing like a circuit you already have supersets built in to a certain degree I'm doing a chest exercise and then I'm doing a back exercise then I do shoulders and there's no in tagging mystic muscle group for that but then I'll do a bicep in a trice. Another example of 2 muscle groups would be hamstring and quadriceps so the front of your thighs in the back of your thighs and that's a great way to do it too and it feels good sometimes right you're doing the opposing muscle groups and when you want that pump story for another day or topic for another day you have a workout I called the party pump in New York City that was a Friday night routine for certain clients but I digress yet again but yeah so that is just another way to kind of structure your strength training workout and when I'm really maximizing my time to exactly how I'm doing it bicep curl triceps kick back right bicep curl tricep kick back and this goes to back to number 5 Some days I do 3 in a row and then some days I want that superset and that's just a mental thing for you and you can mix it up it's not right nor wrong all these different techniques they are tools in your exercise arsenal as I put it Ok And one final superset muscle group that I love is lower back in abdominals and this is generally done at home for me because I'm going to use the equipment out at the gym although I contradict myself in a 2nd about that so I do a set of crunches and then I'll do a set of back extensions a do differ different set of crunches like a different version and then I'll do a bird dog type exercise So basically you're on your back and then you're on your knees or stomach and that's where balance comes from everybody that's where you know we tend to use and work our mirror muscles as I call them what you see in the mirror your abdominals your chest your arms the front of your arms even and we don't work what we can't see our lower back or upper back right so we need to do both so when you superset in this with this definition you're doing it and you're creating balance and that's so important. All right now I just want Gosh I love this concept and so many of the concepts that I think are so valuable are tough to kind of you know. Verbalize but number 7 is change your count actually not too tough to explain but in other words I had a client years ago way to kind of describe this and you know I would count for clients in different ways but this point would say said to me you have to count backwards for me when you talk about he goes I just that's how I want you to do it I don't want you counting up you know if you're doing push up if I'm doing push ups he said I don't want you saying 1234 tell me the number we're going for and count backwards and this is the psychology people this is why I'm still studying the psychology of exercise and just human behavior I was of that stuff this is so for him that was what he wanted and what I realized myself is some days when I am doing an exercise some days I count up and some days I count back and some days when I'm doing a workout it changes for different exercises but I'm so aware of this stuff because what I do for a living and think for yourself do you do that do you count up you count back to change it but here's what I found for myself I'm an experiment of one so I can only talk about that client. I have those experiences and then myself some days I'll be doing an exercise and I'll start counting backwards and I'll change them like you and I don't I don't think I'm going to get there if that makes sense so like I don't think to get those last few Sometimes I want to count up sometimes I want to count backwards I know this sounds crazy to some of you but really think about how you do it and what exercise you do it with and I'm telling you mix it up figure out what you need if you want to count backwards is that going to get you to where you need to be especially with exercises like body weight exercises where you are going for you know more than 10 or 15 reps and let me throw a 3rd way and sometimes I count up halfway. So like when my kids and clients were doing you know 40 push ups sometimes you count up to 20 and then I would count backwards back down it's like chunking It's like doing an Iron Man and saying I'm not going to think of how much I have left in front of me because sometimes you get 234350 my gosh I got 15 more reps Well if you count up to 20 and then count backwards for some people has much more manageable mentally and that is so important when it comes to fitness Finnis is not just about you know muscle head guys. You know Arnold Schwarzenegger super smart guy and I guarantee you he utilized all of these tips and tricks and much more all right so think about changing your count be aware of it see what works best for you . We got really left maximize your rest period so this is where I said I'm going to contradict myself a little bit when I go to the gym I tend to use the equipment that's why I'm there that's what I'm paying for right the different machines the stuff that I don't have at home and I want to vary in around but I'm also paying for someone to use the expensive different women that I can't get my house or I don't want to buy but I'm also going to maximize my time so instead of standing around remember that 32nd rest interval tips I gave you during that 30 seconds don't just stand there Ok 3 different things you can do I love doing abdominal exercises in between now that's generally something I do at home because I don't what why am I going to the gym to do abdominal exercises. But when I am in need of a rest period anyway I'm going to maximize that time back to like people saying 020 minutes isn't enough 30 minutes isn't enough Ok if you are utilizing 32nd rest periods and they're not even truly rest periods because you know if I do squats and then I'm doing abdominal exercises there's no true rest so a core routine you know planks you can do you know lower back exercises like back extensions things like maximize your rest periods now if you're going heavy like squats I can't really do a plank in between then stretch the muscle group you just worked. I mean how simple and yet effective All right one more break for the record. Most people detest stretching and it's the last thing you want to do at the end of your workout which is the time you should do it when your muscles are warm but you can also do it right after you exercise that muscle you work that muscle group and this is especially true for legs you know you do squats then take 15 seconds and stretch your quads of one leg quads or the other way you do another set of squats stretch the hamstring of one leg for 15 seconds stretch the hamstring for 15 of the other maximize your time and finally if you're like Ok I really want this like you know short workout I want to put everything together a cardio interval and I've talked about my 1st in his videos exactly what the progression was and so if you're doing you know a set of whatever doesn't matter you doing a strength move and then for 30 to 60 seconds in between you do a cardio interval you know burn some calories you can keep your heart rate elevated and that can be jumping rope it can be running in place it can be skaters you can jump on a bike and go for 60 seconds maximize your rest intervals so again either core exercise stretch a muscle group or burn a couple extra calories and the burn a couple extra calories that's when you want to get the most as far as Cork expenditure in a short amount of time. All right 2 more I like I had to throw this one in finish with a burned out set so again it's a term as many different ways of saying it but one fun way to end a workout I used to do this with clients and myself let's go back to just bicep curls why not because it's kind of fun to do so we would go to the dumbbell rack and you finish your arm workout with a burned out set so let's just say you do bicep curls normally with 30 pounds just throwing out a number so you do a set of 10 with 30 pounds and then you make your way down the rack right ideally by increments of 5 pounds so set a 10 with 30 pounds set of 10 with 25 set a 10 with 20 now you're going to probably get a set of 9 a set of 8 with 15 a set of 7 with 10 and by the time you get to 5 you can barely do them. So it's just a fun way to kind of you know put the finishing touches on your muscles the muscle group you're working that day and you can do that again with so many different types of exercise you do with pull ups right through a set of 10 pull ups wait a couple seconds maybe 10 and a lot of people are doing this type Now jump back up try to get 10 weight 10 seconds jump back up so just really finish and fatigue that muscle group and just a fun way and it's basically descending pyramid right you're going down so start with a heavy weight and just work your way down so that when you get to that 510 pounds you do it with you know triceps shoulders you name it chest you know that's a fun one to do it with whatever muscle group you're working finish with or an upset all right and the final one is connected to the one I just gave about adding in that cardio interval and this is just so many people have that you know do I do cardio 1st do I do strength training 1st does it matter unless you're going max and I talked about that and then some people you know are doing cardio one day they're doing strength the other day but many people are just like Ok I need to put it together you know I'm working I'm going to gym 3 days a week or I'm going down to my basement 3 days a week and if you are doing that you need to do your cardio and strength together ideally right you need to get both in so here's a great way to do it I give you an hour routine is not to be an hour you can shorten the times to make them half hour or whatever but here's like if you're set I'm going to gym 3 days a week I want cardio and strength together I love giving this example take what you can do right away and it has so many benefits if you're going to do tens Basically you need to 10 minutes of cardio you get 10 minutes of strength and you do both of those 3 times simple math adds up to an hour right 10 minutes of cardio 10 minutes of strength 3 times and I'm just going to do a breakdown real simple to give you an idea so let's say you did 10 minutes of walking on the treadmill that's a great way to get warmed up or running on the treadmill then you do a very simple full body routine. I'm going to do 8 exercises which would basically take roughly 10 minutes to do you do a chest exercise you do a back just gave you this already shoulders biceps triceps now your upper body is done you can you set a squats or leg exercise you know set a one ges another leg exercise or 2 leg exercises and then finish up with an abdominal core a plank so there's a basic framework and how you can do it right so 10 minutes on the treadmill 10 minutes of a full body routine like I just gave you and those can be machines with everyone then you can either go back to the treadmill but ideally you mix it up and here's a thing like their machines that I just could not fathom getting on for a half hour much less an hour I can I can mentally handle 10 minutes so that is when I will do this type workout and be 5 minutes you're going to 30 minutes and you go 5 minutes and you do different strength moves but sticking to 10 at the 10 minute treadmill you know one circuit full body then maybe you go 10 minutes on you pick a bike aired on bike stationary bike and then you do another 10 minutes 2nd set of strengths and you do your final 10 for cardio and maybe that's the Jacob's ladder maybe that's the moving stairs the gauntlet right but this is the perfect time again to do those different types of cardio that are challenging for you both mentally and physically and something that you don't want to be on for anyone other than 10 minutes perfect Ok there you have it I know they seem simple I've been doing every single one of these for well over 30 years with incredible success taking all of these things at different times supersets changing my grip that workout I just gave you Ok doing different things during my rest periods you know I was really looking at social media and in preparing the show I felt like when. You know many of you go to my Instagram account but it goes to like my Instagram account and what you see me do at the gym and I don't ever want you to go to most people's Instagram account is the same thing you're like Ok this person's And that's fine and that's kind of what social media's about who is this person but that's not who I am in fitness and that's why I have had the success physically that I have because I said it a 1000000 times to you if you only do the same thing I care how healthy it is if you just run if you just swim if you just you olympic lifts and you're not doing all the other components of fitness you're going to have problems so when you go to my Instagram account you're to see running or going to see the swimming you going to see biking going to see strength training you going to see food now that has been a detriment to my career to be completely honest which I always am because the media and the profession wants to pigeonhole you are you what are you basically people who say to me I'm actually physiology I'm someone who wants to be as healthy as possible so we do everything a little bit excessive moderation I do a little bit a lot and that's what I take pride in and yes I mean I have some exercise to talk about pushups and things I absolutely love and I will be doing forever but I'm very those around and I do exercises that I'm not crazy about but I know a really good for me and I was the great I was on Joy Behar. When I came out with my book beat the gym talked about this before and you know the pre-interview. And one of the tips I gave for that was start everyone I've given this on a podcast start every workout routine with one exercise you really don't like especially the ones that are going to help you write for me at shoulder exercises things like that they're boring but I know I need to do them but I got to get them out of the way at the beginning a heart that flashed up on the screen she looked at me and she said why don't I do that like we're not going to argue because it's healthy for you and I'm not asking you to do you know an entire hour of things you don't like one thing it's the small steps small things done consistently all right enough hope you enjoyed it hope you had some aha moments like wow I can do that and it's the simple stuff one final time there are no secrets I'll call them tips and tricks whatever but this is exercise science this is this is behavioral psychology. Thinking what you should do with what you can do and what we've evolved to do right keep it simple All right thank you show much for listening. It is here we find one of the best athletes in this class chase a defender so disruptive opposing coach Lane Kiffin claimed there are only 10 guys like him in the world other say he's a generational talent that was in college now Jase as a new world to conquer starting one week from today at the draft. 12 1st it's a. 32 day break how much of a come I. Say. For the past year chase young has listened to the media tout him as a rare. Potential to become one of the N.F.L.'s most prolific play make. On the defensive side of the ball all those defensive players as you mentioned some studs that will be at the top of the board in any giraffe you're another matter you're always going to have chase young Adam near the top of that list with his past rush ability. She just. In. Case has the same elite skills and now has the same high expectations to change the course of the game and a franchise in the blink of an eye. With. This kind of. A 6 foot 5 inches long stride quickly eats up turf and gets him to the opposing quarterback Donna shingly fast at nearly $270.00 pounds his strength overpowers would be blockers what he brings to the table is in very high demand. All around the face of this me in that I believe. In the running game. I can cover. If need be I feel like I bring aggressiveness and dog like mentality and the football. And. K. To the next level defensive line an associate head coach Larry Johnson recruited chased Ohio State and worked with him to develop the versatile disruptive Defender we know today Jason are really close and I started going to recruiting process and I think we have to chase tonight was a real real conversation what do you want what you want to be a great experience and the more I gave him the more you want to so you know you got a guy who's really found it but he's also got a very Congar. Most fans don't see the work and dedication it takes to go from that tall fast athletic 18 year. Recruit into a nearly un block of a force of nature standing atop the draft the athletes we all call a natural are often the guys spending the most time in the weight room watching film and constantly working to improve themselves. It was our most shop to run that was and that it were. And when he got in trouble. He goes to try and. Use a high school. To get rid of telling a highly recruited player to get rid of their most successful move doesn't always sit well habits are hard to break and some top players can get by on their athleticism alone edifice freshman year going into spring football we had more time to spend one on one just trying to contain the bills too but so what I would do it cut those clips out shown to him and said This is why it doesn't work at this level and this is why these techniques we're going to. Sack same thing I'm going to train a dog let me show it to you live. And I think the moment. This really works I don't want sophomore year he was a totally different player but think as we say at a house they will cause they is really joining a cool. You know I was 7 after the season when I. Saw it they it goes out because a. Film study. Specifically every day. I mean he changed from a software church a year and that's what you want to see happen but he really took a bigger job because he had certainly and he just worked on some people don't realize it really wants to be the best. So can through high school career. Despite missing 2 games due to suspension last season young broke the Ohio State single season sack record and led the nation with 16. A half a quarterback takedowns cloud of doubt. That on a bone he became the 1st defensive player since 2012 to be named a finalist for the Heisman trophy but in the end lost out to Joe burrow a player he's competing with to be the topic should he be the number one overall pick I think it should be no more drive and I think he will be the number one draft pick he is the most dominant player at his position in all of causal mock draft boards and pundits have the field on going either 1st overall to Cincinnati number 2 to Washington or 3rd to the Detroit Lions but what does all this hype and the prospect of being picked in the top 3 mean to chase in his family as they await the draft from home I do like this shirt. Here don't fit you. Know me good and then. You go and be good men and be patient. Be patient and then be fine. And then it can be about me in church. Right now in quarantine it's all about being patient and focusing on what the young playmaker can control. Right now in quarantine it's all about being patient and focusing on what the young playmaker can control. 21st birthday was my family and friends and just chill in the house and just just present spending time with his friends and family waiting for his name to be called preparing his body for the upcoming season he said Blago the noise we said basically do what we don't face. But it. Is a trap. Having. The 1st we get care when I'm good and I want to live it. It's a rough. You know they tell me you know they said oh they say does it. Say. Sports Illustrated's. Go. Cold. But analyst or somebody and then just say. All of. His I should say spank him. Chase his former Ohio State teammate Nick both led all rookies with nice acts last season already he setting his sights on surpassing that going after the rookie record for sacks set by Javan curse at 14 and a half it's this dogged pursuit of greatness and his pursuit of opposing quarterbacks that led to Chase's nickname the predator. He's going to be expected to be today v. On Clowney be expected to be mild Garrett Cleo Mack that great outside pass rusher and if he's picked 1st overall by the Bengals Chase will play only a few hours from Ohio State's campus they go 2nd to Washington young will play home games just 20 minutes away from the community he grew up in Upper Marlboro Maryland it would actually be our you know that's the team I've been growing up watching my whole life and you know to be able to go play. You know form why my backyard would definitely definitely a blessing just because you know my family will be close and come see me play. Chase's families played a major role in his life sharing their work ethic commitment to detail and even their athleticism Young's father Greg was a basketball player and his uncle Bernard Joseph play defensive end for Virginia Tech families were big for me. You know just people that you know to always have your back and you know I tried Hugo's it was close as possible I want to be here for was a for their own a raising me made me help me become the man I am today on and on to feel and a definite deserve to you know be a little careful because they were key people to help me get for you today and you know I can't say I would be here without growing up in Maryland he had a lot of off field interests while attending St Vincent high school there were no minutes then when I went to. It was a talented singer a musician as I grew up my mom would put Me course. And things like that so you sound pretty good but as he got older the predator knew his true calling wouldn't involve his voice or instruments I had a lot of things I just knew one of the best football players ever to put a game lodging was to be one of the best players a high school the best time to state a man they all came to reality as a draft approaches carries heavy expectations teams and fans Invision greatness from him and the bar is as high as it can be I hear a lot of things that are dark interested down wherever I go I'm on the phone numbers for some prospects struggled under the weight of this immense pressure. Even break completely is 21 year old Chase ready for what the football world and tens of millions of dollars in salary will soon demand does he fear not living up to fans who expect an immediate game changing talent where is journey will take him we don't know but what we do know is that journey begins the moment in the draft when his name is finally called seeing. That's. My. Life as the predator is a very different experience from what most draft hopefuls go through for the hundreds of prospects not at the top of the n.f.l. Draft the process is filled with doubt. And what can feel like a never ending series of questions. Oh. Yeah it is specialized. A job right. Now you know you get. Away. You're not going to you're just a number 2 yes. You. Know. First just you. Know. Ok. Let's just keep. On hearing on the interview yeah I'm going to be working towards. Yet another just. To meet the saying bassy an undersized 5 foot 10 quarterback from Wake Forest projected to be drafted in the mid to late rounds next week saying the same bassy from. Georgia. Georgia boy Columbus Georgia since about 100 miles south. West of Atlanta in a state where high school games and college recruiting are particularly fierce a lot of people question my size I'm smaller guy or whatever but you know that's never ever mattered to me when I was playing ball I never even knew my size has an issue in my game until this whole draft process started because I've always been the type of player to you know attack anybody who's an up in front of me never never back down from anything despite the upcoming draft being touted as the year of the wide receiver with a dozen top rated pass catchers expected to be selected in the 1st 2 rounds someone has to cover all these new weapons in the league on defense and so it's sayings athleticism aggressive nose for the ball and 4 for 6 speed that caught the attention of scouts and his 4 seasons in the a.c.c. He Total 227 tackles 5 interceptions and 45 broken up passes lofty numbers for someone playing his position on draft day is that my name gets called flat out that's my biggest concern and for my family to. You know seeing to have a fair mean now know that all the support they put into me and I was worth it Nephilim for them as well for many players the journey to the n.f.l. Is a group effort it's a collective dream about more than just a career playing football this is especially true for saying spend. Their Nigerian immigrants which isn't too unusual in the n.f.l. . But their story is fun to go. Get my brother make sure. He comes out to dinner. So a lot of times when he's hungry you know he does he can't communicate that he's hungry so we you know we kind of know. He suffers from. He has autism he's been in the house with us you know my whole life I've seen him grow up and you know how to kind of take care of him being the younger brother my whole life. And. Not getting to make sure. You know yeah. Your family you. Know almost saying he's out of stairs for a minute because he was kind of jumping around screaming the other day. And he actually going to want to work cabinets and broke one of the cabinets. As she kind of mad about that so. He's very very hyperactive when people think of autism you know they think of like. Functional they can do but he you know and so you can probably hear he's down there like yell and scream and doing his own thing. And he's actually a big reason why I. Play football and one of the things that keeps me going so. You know everybody in my family kind of. Tied my brothers in medical school because my brother my dad the doctor obviously takes care of people every day my mom's a teacher she's special a you know that's kind of her thing sister is a nurse so everybody's kind of has those you know keeping in mind with their careers and with maybe. An athlete can't play sports so that's kind of expressed the impact he has on me. With me being the Athlete of the family and you know he can play sports organized sports so that's kind of you know how I express my. Thinking of him you know how the impact he has on me just you know play because he can and I've actually want to be able to take care you know give him the best care that he needs and you know it's really cool to see how the whole family kind of rallies around him and you know it impacts all of us so much. And I know football and the path I'm on and everything I'm doing. That's kind of been one of the main driving factors for well is things brother has been an inspiration pulling him toward his n.f.l. Dream he's not alone another force has also been pushing a 6 journey forward from behind the scenes my biggest fan is the. Past 2 years actually made it to like every football game home and away. Takes all the work to take off work on a Friday because. I had a good afternoon my name is bassy and a certain bass is mother I always have mixed feelings when I talk about this because a son was the baby of the family and personally I wanted to go right he had 2 boys before him so when did that tell me it was another. Male. But then I immediately x. Got for forgiveness but because I was a little bit worried on how to raise 3 males in the same home. Ira. I kind of initially had a mixed feelings but I'm so grateful to God that He came into our family he's always been my biggest fan she's always been the one to tell my games and little e t We took me to all my math tournaments whatever I was doing in school she was on me for my academic stuff was ceremonies she keeps all my trophies everything I have only my mom that I'll say as much of my number one fan for this is that that was the statement and if this is what it is we have no choice you've done all that we expected of a child how ever. I never had any point in time let him slack with the education his high school coaches will tell you how many times I've tried to take him up whenever I had to be I mean I didn't turn him assignment I did they want him to think football is it I've always tried to make him understand you have to have something to lean back on in case this doesn't work there's a saying in sports that you can't teach size for the Chase Youngs of the world this works in their favor for many others like a saying it raises a lot of teams have been known to shy away from smaller players for fear of injury that their production won't translate or that they simply can't match up with bigger stronger opponents 8 of the top receivers expected to be drafted this year at least $4.00 to $6.00 inches taller than a saying that alone puts a draft ability in serious jeopardy. But also. Some are courting stubborn Marg just. As if there's one prospect to never doubted his place in football it's Jeff Okuda. Jeff was chased a teammate at a high state and well known cornerback prospect. 21 Texas State University quarterback this is the same position as saying place and Jeff's role on defense isn't all he and his sister Karen have in common with a saying I know this is Karen and. So. Both my parents are Nigerians my mom was born in one Gerry and we have the background that's how we were raised with both Jeff and a saying being brought up by Nigerian immigrants and both playing cornerback it's difficult not to compare the 2 Jeff played 3 years in college the same place for on paper sayings collegiate stats warthe Japs on field accomplishments but stats can be deceiving especially for n.f.l. Draft picks. He calls me Jeff and I'll stay everyone is like you know just love it boring I want to call it is like like today not only Jeff you don't we haven't. You know so there was started going crazy and then there was our saying for you have it and then from there it's kind of grew I mean the fans just loved it so I stuck with it I don't know it's strange hearing everyone call him job for having all the stuff I've just always known him it's going to be brother like it's weird to see him come as far as he has just always known him as someone who I have to protect and just someone who I just didn't need to do everything for the days of his older sister needing to protect little brother Jeff are long gone Jeff is now 6 foot 1205 pounds and an almost certain top 10 pick in the n.f.l. Draft his career stats are low 88 tackles 3 interceptions 21 passes broken up due to a shocking reason he is good at football he is so good in fact opposing teams essentially choose not to play against him most opponents simply didn't attempt to pass to the receivers he defended and extraordinary sign of respect in football and I think I worked really hard on does. I mean people always assume that you know just being a 5 star and all that. It dangerous an easy 5 star recruits are the top rated players coming out of high school into college this year across the entire country only $28.00 players receive the 5 star distinction and I know from ages behind the scenes in a lot of work even school to become a foster to get a house they be successful so a lot of sacrifices on Main. Kilometer course always around very. Tricky terrain right because I'm going up hill but I can tell you that. For all types of wind. I run up a hill like this. One walking the. Line and then. Just a. Choice of. Gears just a former college defensive cornet or an associate head coach Greg Schiano on those sacrifices it was nothing uncommon in the middle of end of February to drive in and be doing some Saturday afternoon as a coach and then you hear some some noise and you walk out there and he's out there working technique was one of his buddies you know at a time when most college kids are laying around playing video games I mean he was just that driven I just remember Jeffrey from the get go saying I love football and I want to be an about Starr at the end of day I'm I'm going to know that I've made it when I can take care of my mom and myself so just from the get go he just knew what he wanted was to be in the n.f.l. I am athlete it is tell he was someone the how to go that he want to achieve and it was I guess strange seeing it in like a 6th grader when I would see it but now that we're at this point I just think it's so crazy so how is this 6th grader come within one week to fulfilling his prophecy how did Middle School Jeff turn into Jeth the 5 star recruit what was so unique about his family and upbringing in like the Ebo which is what my parents are the mindset in a way is you go to school you don't miss school you get a the Ebo are ethnic group native to Southern Nigeria this is the culture Jeff and Karen's mom are Eat up in and like you saying in his household Jeff and Karen were raised with the same high expectations in the Ebo. There's no such thing as like a b. Or c. Like wire you're going to go to gays to be a doctor to be a pharmacist to be a nurse to be some type like accountant in other points as they're free to go to university going to be those things I don't really think football or some type of sport is like a career to most let's say Nigerian someone that's not a job that's a hobby job and that's a lot of times where Jeffrey and I were kind of. In our own mindset free Speer way of thinking which kind of we got into trouble for that here and there for being so different. From him tell my mom he was going go to on a film I know it gives me chills just to think about I remember when he was say something that he wants to do and regardless of what it will like come to us by the cost of work not just go ahead and fight for the I'm just so proud of him just level of focus is nearly unprecedented in college football over the last 2 seasons no opposing player topped 50 receiving yards against him in a game this season he didn't have a single holding or pass interference penalty and he was only beat for one touchdown the entire year he wasn't perfect but he certainly was close I think it was my technique. Consider myself a technician. And then all of this is in phase a ways like it was your technique so I try to sharpen my sword every chance that I can get it's not only technique and physical ability that separate Jeff is a dominant player he's as mentally strong as anyone in the draft thanks in part to the few people he could lean on the most this thing about us and out of music. On. Sunday I'll forever be appreciative of her for my name is Jean. Jacques was. He happy to be having the. Time to be. Back in my. And syllogistic Aimee's root cause of the d 8. Whom. Suggest. It was a student. Mine in middle school he happens to be having a problem and it. Happens a building off is when t.j. Was having a come back I'm out of the kitchen and sometimes a game is a real possibility and say hey. Jeff you're a good little destruction my classroom this wasn't a 3. Act like you had an African last name and maybe in the end you and I had to get more interesting no way in the this child is actually the way to have described him to be acting as if he was going on with you he is going to tell me what was going on he didn't have I think a novel in the class a test for some day and he felt at each other's. Eyes that Ok Q Tell me why you don't have this sex what is not and he said that. Because we can't afford an. Because of how to see mom Mary was. 'd what Jane didn't know then is that Jeff's mummery had been in and out of the hospital since Jeff was 2 years old. And I said Ok what do yo parents feel I said man a man does not have a job. He said my mom's and now it's their duty and mom has a knock on she doesn't you know can't help out you know and then at that point he broke down and said it right he said My mom has cancer. And. I say crimes such as the book for a name calling a husband I say I had this to instigate I just raise my hat you know and there's no way I can come home if I don't will find his lead in trying to receive. Every chance the mom understood media. And among just an absolutely has to eat until Mitchell is Larry to see us alone. From that moment forward Jane Odo became. A permanent fixture in Jeff and Karen's lives 7 and their eventual Guardian in caretaker later in life though they had some issues to sort out 1st Jen laws for. Each and read from a book I wasn't full well from and so when Jeff came to me in my grade and say hey I want you to support me and I said I said Jeff I don't like just like his problems you know he's the head and I remember you saying that and generally support me I'm going to put my best in this and I'm not going to disappoint you everybody ones there. Is an awful news because you're That's my girl I'm going to watch what's the reaction I think in terms of Jefferson or of United for athlete but says Yeah Ok that was me when I was younger was Ok if you don't want to be things probably are now I know like to hear the kid say I want to be a doctor I want to be a firefighter that went out but I think it wasn't so high school that I really started to see what everyone else was seeing in terms of technique and form and just drive like this kid was actually wanting to be an official athlete *. I guess I realized he was maybe between his sophomore and the junior year so when his father started coming that's when I kind of understood how special he was and how much one can put exude this game so he also likes to please me and about that makes me happy I told him that he's great to get up so we can get distracted. By some stuff and came in at the county had like 15 kids and he was losing you didn't hide. Here again is former House State Defense of court Nader and associate head coach Greg Schott Oh he was part of the team trying to recruit Jeff the 1st couple times that I went to his high school to see him practice South Grand Prairie high school I mean you watch and when they're doing a one on one pass coverage he's just an intense competitor has great length and really really fine speed he wants to be the best he can be striving for perfection and that jumps out at you very quickly when you watch from practice you just got the sense that he was a guy that was a special player and that if we could somehow lure him out of the state of Texas and get him to come to our state that that would be a real big feather in our kept at Ohio State over time Jeff Annette Jay narrowed down the choice to 2 schools so he called me and say hey you know we're going to start a scholarship and I was very happy. I kind of very had a time to make you see that indeed you know I say Hey silly campaign. And it's pretty academic and half a 1000000 education for Krege How do you know one that he had a great if I did c.p.a. Had everything just his brain and if it wasn't a full body and. Running here I tried very much to come easy to go to Stanford and I said how can you choose Ohio State Williston for if there is a good discount for I know it would be easy for me to spot he said All High City has a lot of. Our house who to put in the walk to get on the field at the highest Amazon because it was cool auntie but in the example it has with the t.c. To prevent it I want to be accomplished enough about 80. Feet would bring up a penny fund that former o.s.u. Coach Sean o. One of the things that I think attracted just so much was a lineage of cornerback play that was pretty special right so Jeff. Game they're expecting to be the next of a line of really fine corners he was going to be able to play top level football against great competition not only on Saturdays in the Big 10 conference but also within his own program every day in practice and that was something that was very important to Jeff that he had an environment where he could be the best that he could be and that's what attracted me to him so I think the combination of maybe not quite a Stanford education but a good education coupled with elite level football in an elite level football conference that was something that Jeff couldn't pass up is very intentional on his bended boots you know what he. Somebody said. If it is systematic what is on for you but I want you to know that at. If I don't find out to beat what I'm on the street to be it will bring back. Some doubt for. My husband I said you know what the language is where presidents go because he does not cease to amaze us my husband and I will find you know all this come about as the owner got a chance. Was Right it's almost like he sat down and just kind of a pretty day when he was pleased to be this he told me when he was a Frenchman he said I'm just going to. Be Single the ones in America is the ones we don't want that I'm going to meet. These amazing form I think you know he's. He's a child and. Now this 11 year old's fateful predictions are one week away from finally becoming true proving himself right to and Jane once again this time on the biggest stage of football. Trapped a whole job to experience. That if he doesn't obey bless it because these guys have put in the same my work room they don't have the same chance to get drafts either releasing it as a pressure thing the question is how high will Jeff be chosen and what happens after he reaches the goal he set so long ago Can he maintain his laser focus has it become ingrained on alterable part of who Jeff Okuda is going to only play one about Ohio State stand it is a lockdown cornerback so anything less than that time is seen as a disappointment and as the guys who play before so I think we have a horse up to that standard that. One 1st round or just going to have to try it kind of just comes along with it even if you are striving for that isn't the moment I never get.
