Good morning and welcome to the senior living today show the show about seniors for seniors and those of us to love them I'm your host Dave Ritter Lee again with you this weekend and we have a great show with you love to talk about anything financial physical and today we're going to be talking about what goes on with the computer and I mean with Steve surely he's the CIA Parkview Hospital handles I t. He's a veritable with and we love to talk I will talk about things that you and I may never think about but we all have. Pewters Good morning good to have you here Hey thanks Dave good morning it's great to be here and what a time to talk about some of the current trends and and things that scare me when it comes to computers out in our world yeah we've done the show a time or 2 and it seems that every time you come on you've got some new threats and things that we have to consider and you know what I think we're just so used to getting on we have so much transaction now with our cell phones even our seniors are on the Internet more than ever before and this is why this is such a great topic No it really is and I you know as I think about what's happening out there today we do a lot of analysis every single day in terms of what the threats are but as I think about our senior population in things that could be very much germane to them ransomware is something we can talk briefly about today as well as social media and I'll probably talk a little more about social media then ransomware because I'm seeing some things that are really not good in terms of Facebook and Instagram and some of those things and to your point seniors are really using those social media tools a lot because we live in an age of instant gratification and it's a quick way to chat with her family or friends or do those kind of things will it is it and it's amazing now with Face Time where you know you just have to have a couple a wife I connections some place around the world I know I'm talkin day England a lot and you know all over the country all over the world just using a regular signal and in our seniors now are connecting with their kids at a distance so we're just getting so much more comfortable with the fact that now we have excess ability and with with Twitter now a lot of seniors I'm not sure are engaging a lot of those new newfangled ways to communicate but I think the standard Facebook and the standard getting on the internet and those types of things still seem to be a vulnerability no era. He is Dave it's just an interesting side note right now it's estimated that there's over 100000000 people in the world who are following the tweets of a certain u.s. President so that's very interesting because we're not seeing that in our times but you're but you're absolutely right I think you know Facebook there's so many people on Facebook and there's such great things that happen when families can communicate and stay in touch but I think what we're seeing lately are a couple things that really really are scary one is Facebook's now become a place where viruses spread and so I saw one just the other day where a Facebook post came up and said Your computer's at risk Click here for Microsoft's support and when the person clicked that for Microsoft's support it actually brought a virus down onto their computer so pretty serious stuff the other piece that sticks so sad to me is the perpetrators are now using Facebook to go out and embeds not embezzle but just steal from from our senior citizens. So as an example I saw a case a few weeks ago where a gentleman out on Facebook met someone purported to be a female and they conversed back and forth and the next thing you know he was wiring this so-called person money and needless to say after a little bit of time it all disappeared in the guy was out 10000 bucks so there's just such wonderful thing social media but they can also be so dangerous Steve you talked about ransomware of course the word ransom has an implied. Meaning to it is that we're ransomware comes from where people are trying to just. Use a false good to get money from people is that what ransomware comes from yeah that that's what's the big thing that's that's out there in the world today and so just a little quick 2 seconds of background in the old days the bad guys would try to force their way into our computers and so we've gotten so good in this world that bar in the door so to speak now what they do some called social engineering so they'll send an email they'll send something that looks of interest to the person on the computer and when they click into it that's one again just like Facebook it invites a virus so it's ransomware what happens is once they click on that link then the virus goes on to their computer in a message comes up that says I've now taken over your computer I have encrypted which is kind of like spy stuff where you can read it I've encrypted everything on your computer as soon as you pay me $3000.00 or $100.00 or some amount I will free up your computer and so it's called ransomware So basically they hold your computer for ransom the crazy part is a lot of the ransomware bad guys actually give you your computer back once you pay however there are some that purport to be you know going to give you your computer back you pay em and they just they just disappear and you've lost your entire computer and once Dave that computer is locked with a. Data you don't get it back out so it's just it's a loss if that's a loss that happens to you it's over Yeah it's a loss and you start over if you've got great backups which you know from our previous shows always talk about backups you might build or rebuild a computer but it's pretty serious stuff and we're seeing it corporately there's been one a month ago that hit all over the world and health care we saw some hospitals get hit and so pretty serious stuff yeah yeah that's that is it and is it does it hit a p.c. More than a mac or are both subject now to being that is that of a that's an awesome question today we still see P.C.'s because a Windows operating system is much more vulnerable than than the apple's I o s we call it the end the I o. S. Operating system so today both get hacked but absolutely the Apple stuff gets hacked last yes I'm going to take note of m m m a mac I's so I bet nice to hear that but there are so many more P.C.'s out there and I think with the changes that go on that's really interesting so to get back to your point on backups so if you were to get ransom like that is it possible then to wipe the computer and then put the backup back into it again absolutely and that's you know we do that corporately we've got 6 levels of backup we do that if we should lose something just even a machine failure but certainly ransomware all we have to do is just basically arrays the computer and rebuild it and we're right back in business that's good to know so for the seniors who may be listening to this in the back up is usually the last thing on their mind what recommendations do you have to to do this sort of protection is it mostly cloud based backups or are we still talking about even a even a thumb drive that you can buy at a Wal-Mart to be able to to do a hard backup you know it's both and I'm so glad you mentioned both of those Klout is certainly. Simple to do and you can do it through Google and other other companies. But really the simple u.s.b. Drive and you're backing up all your data so you know if you have your financials or you know anything at all letters you've written just anything at all that's that's things you've created on the computer you can back them up to a simple little u.s.b. Drive that you buy a like you said Walmart and you're good to go they also sell bigger drives I've got . Drive that holds 2 terabytes and 2 terabytes is a whole lot of bees unseasoned So there's a lot of capability but certainly it doesn't need to be some cloud it can absolutely be just a local Well that's something to think about if you're listening to the show and you haven't backed up in a while. I've had I've had with my computer the ability to go to like an i Cloud to back those up and it's usually a fee based system and then of late I've been backing a doing an additional back up with a hard drive and you just plug it in and it sort of just works on its own in the background to to translate all of your data to that and it reminds me too if I have a plug in for a while like Yeah you're 20 days shy of your backup Well you've got to get back in and do that so that's that's a great thing to think about is that we have a lot of data on there we just take it for granted and doing that back up just in case you get into a jam is something to think about no question so as much as we look at the threats and the risk and I know the ransomware as it is that's really the thing that we have to be the the most concerned about if you're a senior because to me the vulnerabilities of trust and I know my dad has as you know bless his already he's gotten those little men you say your computer needs a little grease and you know it's 10 bucks and you kind of do it to make your computer better I've walked into a couple of those door. 1st to that look legitimate and then you find out what it populates your computer with all kinds of stuff it may even be it may then be a productive looking software package but it just comes with so many other billet he's yeah that's so true and you know it's interesting but the number one weapon and we have a lot of weapons we deployed today but the number one weapon we use today to try to solve or help this problem is education and so you know as it is I think about all of the great people that are out listening this morning on this this show there's a couple points of advice that we give to every employee at the hospital in any group in public that I talk to the end a lot of it relates to e-mail in the 1st one is. If you get an e-mail and you're not sure who sent it to you don't click on anything inside an e-mail that's a link the 2nd one is you might get an e-mail from a friend or you think it's from a friend and it's got something it says Click on this link or open this attachment the rules real simple if you get an e-mail from a friend that you weren't expecting you're so much smarter just pick up the phone to call them and say Did you send me an e-mail because what we're finding a lot of his once the bad guys hack into your computer then they send e-mails to everybody in your address book and making it look like you sent it and when they do that they you click on the link and now they're doing something that might get your identity or you know they're going to solicit your personal information and so we just every single day tell every person we come in contact with at the hospital don't click on the link if you don't know who it's from in even then be very careful Yeah it's true and we do weeks we tend to accept friends from people on Facebook and you know that we may that know we might know maybe through a friend we think we know so this is a really great show today to remind us that we just need to be cautious and meticulous about our behaviors are related to the computers I think this is a good one where we're going to take a little break you're listening to the senior living. Today show a thanks to Montgomery and Stewart funeral directors for and writing our show for so many years we've got the longest running senior show in America right now over 11 years we've been running the show so were excited that we've accumulated so many great listeners on i Heart Radio and also right here on News Talk 590 k c s j so we're going to be right back after these brief messages that don't go away sometimes in our lives we need a little help whether it's you or a loved one consider visiting angels to provide the personal care you deserve visiting Angels has been serving southern Colorado since 2000 and has been selected in the nationwide homecare leadership in Excellence Award 420142015 from one to 24 hours a day visiting angels provides your loved ones with experienced caregivers to provide the love and companionship to keep you in the place that you love the best with hygiene transportation meals and light housework and you'll appreciate the longstanding Better Business Bureau's rating of a plus so when it's time for you to get a little help call visiting angels at 543-4220 that's 543-4220 or go to visiting Angels dot com for more information there's no matching the services Montgomery and Stewart funeral directors provide some funeral homes try to match their prices but if the quality behind thoughtful professional personalized service is important to you in taking care of your loved one there really is no match and since 922 Stuart has remained aware that hometown ownership and operation means a lot but it's not just being located in our community that counts it's being active in it go to Montgomery Stewart dot com or visit them at 14th and main and they welcome back you know you're listening to this in your living today show I'm your host Dave Ritter ling here on News Talk 590 k c s j m with a really great guy Steve surely he's the c I o the Chief Information Officer specializes in i.t. At Parkview Medical Center so thanks Steve for joining us you bet. Always enjoy spend some time with you and try to help take care of this incredible senior popular will if it's fun and you are such a great community leader doing the State Fair parade I get to see every year and and sort of fall under your leadership has it all comes together so I know you do so many things Lions Club I mean the list probably go on I just don't know all the things you do but I know you and your dance calendar is full but we certainly appreciate you stepping up into the community being the leader you are and coming on to the show today to help us out understanding some of the risks that have to do with our interactions on the computer so thanks so much for that. You know we talked a little bit about earlier some of the risks that happen and we were going to talk about our social media presence and some of the risks that take place there now the social media piece for me is largely Facebook if you're professional It could be linked in the thing that sort of taking off these days is is Twitter and as you said before our president has been tweeting a lot and so people get some really turn information the hashtags allow people to find specific information very very quickly and because of those interactions people are sort of the getting a Lol into sleep and what they may be doing what is your insight about what we should be thinking about in regards to social media Well you know Dave I tell you it's social media such an interesting thing to me because you know 1st of all it has put the whole world in instant communication and so one of the you know one of the things we look at is. If a flood happens in a certain state within seconds through social media it's all over the world that that's happened and so information moves so much faster and because of that it creates all kinds of vulnerabilities and opportunities because we're flooding folks with so much information coming over social media you know I talked a few minutes ago about a gentleman that was taken through Facebook and I want to just expand on that a little bit because this one breaks my heart Dave and it's it's it's just so easy to avoid but it's also easy to be taken and I've actually got 2 identical stories that I've seen in the last probably 6 months both cases it was a senior citizen a gentleman both cases on Facebook they apparently were communicated with by a purportedly a female and the communication began and in both cases they're awesome guys but they're both just lonely and as time went on all the sudden over Facebook a relationship started to blossom the sad reality is what we know from forensic research is a lot of these are not females at all they're just syndicates or you know groups of guys or whoever they're just trying to take advantage of you but in both cases these guys really felt like they'd met a soul mate they were promised that the lady would move here to publish and marry them and in just things would be great and then all of a sudden they got well I'm probably going to need a little money to move to public and in each case $1.00 guy over time sent 10000 dollars to the so-called female another guy spent $8000.00 and you know the next thing that happened was the female said well I move in a public context you want to get there and they never heard from again so between the 2 gentlemen they lost 800000 dollars and I just breaks my heart because the guys on the other end really don't care that they're taking your life savings or. Impacting your life in the way they do so you know my strong advice to folks is you just social media is great but you can't trust it as if you were looking at somebody and talking to oh yeah you know the relational gabs too as you age you know loss of a spouse going through a life change you know which happened somewhere around 50 and above we're seeking and we're reaching out for we're just trying to find our validation as we age and so are seniors so if you've got a mom and dad you know they are vulnerable especially if they've lost a spouse if one of them is passed on families are sort of trying to you know figure out what they need but one of the big needs and I think that you're bringing this up is is that pay attention to what mom and dad may be doing with their computer that they're not engaging a nefarious individual trying to part them from their pocketbook and I think that that's just as a really valuable thing that you've said here is that relationally we're vulnerable and this gives us that that sort of comic to be that people are looking for but also a lot of risk and really does David I like what you said you know I my recommendation especially to some folks that might be listening that have parents that are still around is that you really got to pay attention in $1.00 of the 2 cases I'm talking about the son is who discovered his dad was doing this and said Dad what's going on he lost his mother some years ago and the dad said Well you know I found perhaps my soulmate for the rest of my life and the son knew right away that it was a scam and contacted me and we kind of work together to you know help do some things that would protect the dad through this situation and sadly the dead already sent $8000.00 off to this purported love of his life before we were able to intercede but absolutely I love your thought there we really need to be watching out for our parents on this stuff yeah no it's good to have this this discussion and it's. Tough discussion to have with Mom and Dad to you know I look I know you're on the computer a lot you mind if I take a look at your history and find out what's going on and just to make sure that everything's on the up and up I encourage people to have that involvement this is not a really long show and we've got some really important things to talk about and I know we talk a little bit about smartphones and what's happening with smartphones that love to have your take on some of the risks that we're experiencing the I thank you that's what I have to start with a kind of an amusing story so you know I'm very much an observer of Technology's usage around our world and I sit in a restaurant this past week and there was a family of 8 people there ranging from somebody I judged to be probably 65 to 70 clear down to young children and at one point of time as I looked at them every single person that table had their smartphone out doing whatever checking Facebook or e-mail or texting somebody or tweeting or whatever and it's a microcosm of what's happening in our world because the because almost there's a huge number of folks who the smartphone has almost become an appendage to the big deal there Dave though is that we now are starting to see viruses on smartphones now once again we don't see as many on Apple is we do on Droid type smartphones but there are viruses coming on smartphones 2 weeks ago one of my coworkers called me and said I had this really weird message on my i Phone and i clicked on it. And sure enough she brought a virus into her smartphone so you know we used to think smartphones were impervious to virus activity but because the bad guys are so intelligent they've now figured out ways to start to do that so you know once again that says to us be very careful about what we do and who we connect with and again as I said not to be horribly redundant but probably 80 percent of all bad activity these days you invite in through social through social engineering click this link or you have this problem click here so it's not so much the bad guy forcing their rain your smartphone it's getting you to click on something on your smartphone that invites a virus but what's really interesting to Steve is that this geo targeting phenomenon is that they're harvesting my data so if I want to buy a camp or r v or a jeep tire. Somebody is keeping track of all this stuff so wherever we're interested then you know you go back into another website and there you see all the things you looked at yesterday oh it's so true that in the marketing and I study this quite a bit with Facebook and Google and they are changing some of their practices but they mine the data and so if you went out to Google and did a search on like you said Jeep tire then they would mind then start saying you advertisements on Jeep tires. This is great information is really good for us to be talking about this we're going to take a little break right now and then we're going to head back into the last part of our show here we're talking with Steve Shirley from Parkview Medical Center we're talking about the risks that go along with being actively working on a computer smartphone social media etc So don't go away we're going to give you the helpful tips before we end the show we'll be right back after these brief messages there's no matching services Stuart funeral directors provide some funeral homes try to match their prices but if the quality. Professional personalized service is important to you in taking care of your loved one there really is no match. 1922 Stuart has remained aware that hometown ownership and operation means a lot but it's not just being located in our community that counts it's being active in it go to Montgomery Stewart dot com or visit them at 14th and main and sometimes in our lives we need a little help whether it's you or a loved one consider visiting angels to provide the personal care you deserve visiting Angels has been serving southern Colorado since 2000 and has been selected in the nationwide homecare leadership in Excellence Award 420142015 from one to 24 hours a day visiting angels provides your loved ones with experienced caregivers who provide the love and companionship to keep you in the place that you love the best with hygiene transportation meals and light housework and you'll appreciate the long standing Better Business Bureau's rating of a plus so when it's time for you to get a little help call visiting angels at 543-4220 that's 543-4220 or go to visiting Angels dot com for more information Hey we're back for the final segment of the senior living today show thanks for joining us so hopefully many of you are listening to us and I Heart Radio from all around the world we've got a lot of I hear from a listeners that have learned about the show and that are listening to us in South America and various parts of the globe so you can hear our show 8 30 am Mountain Standard Time on Saturdays and we also aired a couple more times on Sunday so love to have all of you joining us we had a great discussion this week with Steve surely is the CIA at Parkview Medical Center here in Pueblo a longtime friend Mark guy about i.t. And I think you know Steve what you've said are things that we need to be planning and working with our families moms and dads to make sure we don't get too far out in the realm of expanding computers farther than we ought to be let's go back and just look real quick at. Some of the things we've talked about this show just some helpful tips for listeners Yes David you know I think the 1st thing I'd want to say though is the computer and technology and the Internet are such incredibly wonderful things so you know I'm the guy that has to fight all the bad guys every day but we certainly don't want any of our users to be afraid to use these systems and this you know you can get so much information at your fingertips from Google amazing the things you can find out and so I don't want to dissuade their usage but that said we just want to really see folks be incredibly careful about the things they do so you know again ransomware somebody actually puts a virus on your computer encrypt everything on your computer which means they change it so you can read it and then you have to pay a ransom to get your computer back so being very careful about what you click on if it's not something you're expecting Don't click on it if somebody says if there's a message comes up that says your computers at risk click here don't click on it call somebody call your family call a computer repair store call somebody but don't click on it we also talked about you know the issues with social media again we're starting to see a lot of viruses on social media so Facebook really nice tool especially for families communicate with a sister in Utah through Facebook but really really scary the viruses that you can bring in and again most all of it is when they prefer to provide you something you click on and so I'm hearing more and more people that are friends of mine on Facebook saying I just got hacked. Don't answer my emails or until they change I'm not sure all that happens but it does give you pause it really doesn't it's that you know it's just really scary the one final thing that I do this every time we talk Dave but it's one of the easiest things you can do to protect yourself and that is get a good quality virus protection software so you know out there there's something called Symantec there's another one called McAfee there's another one called Kaspersky but they are software packages that help protect your computer and the advice I always give is it's not enough to just buy it and have it installed or buy a computer on it you need to have one that updates weekly So it's a subscription you pay every year but every week it updates with tools that fight the latest and greatest viruses so if I could leave all your awesome listeners with that one point it is make sure you go on good virus protection Absolutely I think that's a that's a great way and you have to upgrade that I mean it's something that you have to stay on top of me to slow that up there either upgrades itself but there's usually a fee for that service so you want to expect that that's going to be an ongoing expense but with all of the nefarious behavior out there I'm sure that it starts accumulating that to help that no question Well Steve thanks so much for sharing your your wisdom with the community and and I think this is an invaluable totally invaluable discussion that we're having today and I want to thank you for your leadership in this Oh absolutely Dave always so fun to be here and hopefully said some good information will thanks so much Stephen and we want to thank all of our listeners joining us here on News Talk 590 k c s j tune in every Saturday 8 30 am Mountain Standard Time both and i Heart Radio or right here at 590 K.C.'s j. Senior Living Today show tune in each weekend at the same time for the most current information on senior living or go to senior living Radio dot com. With me today it's a former k.t. Z a jock Bob O'Shea Bob you were just in town Monday because we had a fun event going on. Oh man that weve so much fun they can't get to see all the old guys and I mean I don't think all of us realized until we got together the other night just how much heritage was wrapped up and well below radio and all of us and I thought I walk away feeling like I was part of a brotherhood you know absolutely absolutely What years were you on Katy's in here in Pueblo. From 64 until 68 I was one of the original guy Steve Scott actually kind of started it all and I know a lot of problem listeners remembers you finally. Got together with the original owner back in 62 when another Little Rock n roll radio station 8 which you really have to. Hold it up and I take it that you order. To a rock n roll format and you Rob Oh well we had was an anniversary of all the Katy's e.a. Jocks that were there when Roger Brandt basically was there before a little bit so Steve Scott was there he told me he was 77 years old I think is what he said the other night but Demi just had a birthday recently Steve and I go back believe it or not to grade school up and manage to wow wow. We've known each other for a while for a couple of years anyway and we just felt like we were moving a group well and obviously you were because that station we kept alive well into the 2 thousands was much is the same same product that was out there before you know some of that you know there are very few stations across the country that can claim that kind of longevity as far as holding the attention of its community and being a good citizen in the community you know we try to give back as much as with oxygen Could we were evolving so many charities in so many fundraisers and just trying to be a good citizen for a while yeah and some of the guys that were there the other night guys you haven't heard from or seen for years Frank provisions or was. Just a lot of folks Randy Jay was there and just a whole wealth of low radio was all there in a tent you know. I call Randy j. And that kind of guilt tripped him into it because Tony's because all the culmination Randi is like well I'm not. Going but I called my native said man you can't do this Randy and I worked for Jones Radio Network up in Denver together we were on a coast to coast network doing old eat a few years back and take on race and I ride all right but it's Ok because Tony the guilt trip me and getting on a plane from smart. But Tony can sell ice to Alaska and you know what I mean he's that guy and of course lots of folks in Pueblo know Tony Scola and been there forever and continues to do business in trouble and just one of the really good guys that I've ever known and a real you know leader and promoter and over the years he brought in so many great rock bands to Pueblo and then ended up owning Katie questions ad agency and it's just been a really good friend and so I picked up the phone call they said oh yeah I'm. Well you know you know it's funny part about it it's funny it's such a generous guy to a fault and yet at the end of the demo the waiters came around and gave us the check and I didn't think much about it and what I realized was I didn't have what it said at my check and I'm looking around thinking well I've got somebody else built and then they will start if you walk around the room and everybody realized that Tony was up to being totally again like hey this is Gary Sullivan from at home with Jerry something I sure hope you can join us this weekend of course we'll be talking about your summertime projects I don't know about you but I'm really busy around the house plus we'll have a guest from decorators We'll talk about decking you know stuff that actually last Plus we'll have an expert on pest control for your sure hope you can join us this weekend. With me today I have Andrea Aragon from bubbles United Way How are you young lady I'm doing great Nick how are you good good to see you and you've got good stuff coming up we're talking mentoring so we need people right yet we are making our big push to recruit caring positive adult role models right here in public to spend one hour a week with a struggling middle school student in our United Way middle school mentoring program aren't so what are the qualifications or what do we need here well you just have to have a listening ear and you have to be a positive adult role model of course pass a background check but what we ask is that you spend an hour a week with a student in one of the 5 middle schools that were at hand and that you listened that you provide that support information and advice on life skills that you can share and the hours typically around the lunch hour so if you're working individual and you can get out for lunch spend quality time we've seen that it really makes a difference in the students' achievement in academics in their behavior attendance but what's harder to measure but we really see a lot of strides with is in their schooling gaijin their overall self-esteem because Nic do you remember when you're in middle school all the tougher there are balls horrible oh so horrible it just makes me feel sick when I think about it and so so many of these kids they just come from families that maybe they don't have support are Maybe it's a single family household and they need that additional positive adult role model distillate a little extra encouragement and it really makes a difference and it's a bond that that's forged that I think is not only benefit beneficial for the mentor but also the person doing the volunteering. While I'm thinking back 8th grade was like the toughest 3 years of my life. Oh yeah so you're looking for. But from all walks of life and you are right all walks of life we are really putting a target on business people and the reason is is and just people that are in the workforce but will we love retired people as well as set so they can explain and demonstrate how school helped them in their specific job because if you remember insists grade you're like What the heck does algebra have to do you know I still think that's right once in a while I think high should've paid more attention algebra and I could figure out how to lay this. Really so it's really kind of to show the students how school goes into future life and in their jobs and and just not only that but just life skills they are you know how you become more organized the kids in the program are smart kids that's for sure you just need a little bit of help to the tune up the little Internet yeah maybe give them advice on how to be more accountable response a but these are smart kids they just need a little handout and all of you you're thinking I know it when you open up the paper or you're out there you think it how can I help publish youth this is a great way to do it one hour a week during the school year it's safe it's monitored and we do field trips to as well to create bonding This is a way that you can make a meaningful impact in our community because this is our future now I know in the past you've needed more males is that still the case yeah we typically need about 60 percent males and 40 percent females because we see that typically mostly in that's the breakout because it's the the boys you know they need a little bit of extra help so you need a lot of men that are willing to step up and be that positive male adult role model but of course we use females and you know our gladly able to accept them now if somebody wants to. Do this well how do they sign up what do you do this so I'm going to direct them to our website below United Way dot org slash mentor will test information there they can sign up they can apply and again you just have to pass a background check we do an interview with the prospective mentors just to line them up with the student that we think they'll fit 7 yes and then we do a training just to give pros on and plates on how to best interact with the kid but if you can listen you can do this it's not a tutoring program it's just that positive adult role model which we all probably have somewhere in our past if you went back you know we all know there are so many that made a difference really good even outside of our parents teachers Yeah church something like that and I still have mentors and if I didn't have mentors Ike I just can't imagine you know where my life would be so they'll always make an impact Well there you go if you feel that in your heart again probably United Way dot org is a slash mentor yet you can go on there check it out and we're happy to answer any questions as well they can give us a call at 225-8580 as well but lots of information on the on the website and we'd love to have you be a part our mentors are amazing people they're all busy they all care and for them to donate their time is really humbling and the mentors I've talked to they're rewarded as well they think they're great about it they hate to see the end of the school year they do they do so yes we really encourage if you want to make a real difference in public with the United Way middle school mentoring programs the way to go are right you need details you can even call here we'll get you hooked up Andrea always a pleasure great thank you so much never to give in her own key because she just keeps showing up at the radio station Andrea Aragon back here from bubbles United Way in today's a big day for the United Way It Is a neck and thank you for that key I appreciate having 2nd thoughts are either yes so we're kicking off today at the public. Convention center at $1130.00 this is our 95th year a fund raising. Started in 1923 and boy it was tough that 1st year I was there and here we are again. I feel like that but we are just trying to drum up community support because we're going out there into businesses and we're having events and we're sending letters and driving people to our e-mail because our goal is to raise dollars for pueblos nonprofits and that means. Dollars that are helping your neighbors your friends your coworkers and even yourself so we have a lot of work to do to try to fund those different nonprofits out there that are providing services in public so you guys are kind of like the hub of nonprofits they come to you about the money out of any means you many do so what I love about United Way are $2.00 things one is even a small gift makes a huge difference so if it's if it's a buck a week or you know $20.00 a year or some give $2000.00 it all goes and makes a difference and it impacts so many different areas so we're talking about youth we're talking about senior citizens we're talking about people just like you and I that maybe go through a crisis right maybe they need counseling in their life they've had some kind of situation I have been in that situation myself where I have needed someone to come in and give me that little hand that little boost and that's what United Way services do so it's not a handout it's a hand up I gotcha is so today it is kind of kicks off you got a new president a new chairman right yeah Mike Baxter the c.e.o. Of park few Medical Center has a volunteered to be our campaign chairman and go out and raise money part Few does a great job they raise over $100000.00 for us and he wants to take That's a step further because he cares about the community so we're thrilled we've got a lot of volunteers every year we have about $600.00 volunteers now yes and they help us in businesses we were just out at Xcel Energy yesterday and they're outstanding So it's really a community wide f. For people coming together in the knighting to stand and we and we really say we stand for hope and problem because we believe in public we know we have our challenges but we have hope. And when people give of their time talent treasure we can we can give hope to more people make public better now do you have a goal that we can say or not yeah yeah we're going to we're we're going to announce it's $1075000.00 a lot of depot all to yes a lot to goal but but we are trying to rally the community to say any little bit helps and we think we can we can do it with their help and every year I think there's no way they're going to hit that goal and every year somehow you do survive somehow by the grace of God and by the generosity of Pablo ends we're able to do that so I thank all the donors out there who give and if you find it in your heart you want to give a little or a lot we'd love to take it will put it to good use $0.89 of every dollar that you give goes directly to programs and we have that commitment to keep our admin very low so that more people can benefit and there's ways to do that through your employer too I know that we have a lot of employees that give through payroll deduction and that's the best way to give because a dollar a week or $5.00 a paycheck it adds domicil it you don't miss it and it makes a huge difference so for one buck a week make $52.00 over a year's time we can buy $200.00 meals throughout we've done some funding for food pantries at Central High School East High School South High School so there's there's a lot of needs and you're dollars are helping to make that happen all good stuff and again if somebody wants to make a donation with the best way just go to our website publish the United Way dot org There's information on how they can donate if they want to do a campaign in their business that's awesome have an event for us or just want to give a contribution one time or a continuous gift of a small amount whatever it is will take it you know Andrea for bubbles United Way for the details you can get hold of us to get you hooked up and I'm going to need that key back now but if I bring donuts now we're talking. With me today I got a couple folks from bubble Crime Stoppers some board members I have Cynthia Brown and Paul Montana's how you guys doing today very good morning it's coming up now you've got to run coming up on Saturday September 30th right yes that's correct and this benefits public Crimestoppers restaurant which is a great organization that you guys do a lot of things and I've noticed a lot of things like on Facebook and different things where you are actually put out rewards to pick up people that are causing problems around here so this good thing here protests. Yes I am you look like a runner is why I asked there so this is kind of right up your alley here then right yes it is and I actually retired military so I've had a lot of a lot of experience with Ronnie Ok and I'm like we're looking forward to our run it's called the Swat. Run which stands for the sprinters walkers and trash talkers . Trash talkers of d.c. I thought you guys just didn't know how to spell very others like the swat team was what I was think of trash talkers are people like me is what you're saying yeah so good stuff going on now Guinness is coming up on September 30th what if you got knees like mean you can't run can it can you walk on this deal yes that's not a problem it's a one and a half mile walk Ok a memory going to walk and what are we going to do that it's going to be at City Park we're going to walk a mile and a half and then we're going to have 5 Cave Run as well and how many laps around city park is that have you calculated that yes we have we have a route already in place and the walk is one time around Ok there is 2 times around dacha. Experience runner like you that will just be kind of a warm up probably right yes it will but we're really mostly happy that the people that are going to help us are the southern Colorado runners Association were sanctioned by them and this is a sanction run through the southern Colorado runners a cessation So thank God for all their help they've been very very pivotal and alpinist get this run together so none of this is a sanction Ron if you set a record or something go down. How do how does all that work I'm not a look at me I'm not a runner Wow Well the way that works is that we they will bring their timing equipment thing will be officially timed and if in fact someone happens to do that then I think they are the governing body that would be able to you know say this is one of the fastest times in southern Colorado and maybe put in the bucks told you know if somebody wants to be a part of this what do we need to do Ok Our you can go to run Sign Up dot com And that is where you can actually do the registration Ok And it allows you to pay online on time hand at the end of the race there is a cutoff for I believe it's September the 20th and they have to register by them and after that then of course the price goes up and they would have to register the day of the day which is at the City Park and the price will go up they'll get all their stuff at that at the time all right all sounds like good stuff it's all for a good cause so instead of running from the law will be running for the law I guess or something that's not right that's correct the 5 k. Run and walk anything else we need to know while the walk starts at 7 40 am in the run media after at run starts at 8 o'clock am it's all good stuff a Saturday September 30th if you need some details you can reach out to the radio station tune will get you hooked up thank you both for coming in and look forward to c.n.n. Thank you very much I mean the list probably go on I just don't know all the things you but I know you know your dance calendar is full but we certainly appreciate you stepping up to the community being the leader you are and coming on to the show today to help us out understanding some of the risks that have to do with our interactions on the computer so thanks so much for that. You know we talked a little. It about earlier some of the risks that happened and we were going to talk about our social media presence and some of the risks that take place there now the social media piece for me is largely Facebook if you're professional It could be linked in the thing that sort of taking off these days is is Twitter and as you said before our president has been tweeting a lot and so people get some really current information the hashtags allow people to find specific information very very quickly and because of those interactions people are sort of the getting a Lol into sleep and what they may be doing what is your insight about what we should be thinking about in regards to social media Well you know Dave I tell you it's social media such an interesting thing to me because you know 1st of all it has put the whole world in instant communication and so one of the you know one of the things we look at is. If a flood happens in a certain state within seconds through social media it's all over the world that that's happened and so information moves so much faster and because of that it creates all kinds of vulnerabilities and opportunities because we're flooding folks with so much information coming over social media you know I talked a few minutes ago about a gentleman that was taken through Facebook and I want to just expand on that a little bit because this one breaks my heart Dave and it's it's it's just so easy to avoid but it's also easy to be taken and I've actually got 2 identical stories that I've seen in the last probably 6 months both cases it was a senior citizen a gentleman both cases on Facebook they apparently were communicated with by purportedly a female and the communication began and in both cases they're awesome guys but they're both just lonely and as time went on all the sudden over Facebook a relationship started to blossom the sad reality is what we know from forensic research is a lot of these are not females at all they're just syndicates or you know groups of guys or whoever they're just trying to take advantage of you but in both cases these guys really felt like they'd met a soul mate they were promised that the lady would move here to publish in and marry them and just things would be great and then all of a sudden they got well I'm probably going need a little money to move to problem and in each case $1.00 guy over time sent $10000.00 to the so-called female another guy spent $8000.00 and you know the next thing that happened was the female said well I move in a public context or when I get there and they never heard from again so between the 2 gentlemen they lost $800000.00 and I just breaks my heart because the guys on the other end really don't care that. Taking your life savings or impacting your life in the way they do so my strong advice to folks is you just social media is great but you can't trust it as if you were looking at somebody and talking to oh yeah you know the relational gabs too as you age you know loss of a spouse going through a life change you know which happened somewhere around 50 and above we're seeking and we're reaching out for we're just trying to find our validation as we age and so are seniors so if you've got a mom and dad you know they are vulnerable especially if they've lost a spouse if one of them is passed on families are sort of trying to you know figure out what they need but one of the big needs and I think that you're bringing this up is is that pay attention to what mom and dad may be doing with their computer and that they're not engaging a nefarious individual trying to part them from their pocketbook and I think that that's just as a really valuable thing that you've said here is that relationally we're vulnerable and this gives us that that sort of comic to be that people are looking for but also a lot of risk and really does David I like what you said you know I my recommendation especially to some folks who might be listening that have parents that are still around is that you really got to pay attention in $1.00 of the 2 cases I'm talking about the son is who discovered his dad was doing this and said Dad what's going on he lost his mother some years ago and the dad said Well you know I found perhaps my soulmate for the rest of my life and the son knew right away that it was a scam and contacted me and we kind of work together to you know help do some things that would protect the dad through this situation and sadly the data already sent $8000.00 off to this purported love of his life before we were able to intercede but absolutely I love your thought there we really need to be watching out for our parents on this stuff yeah. I know it's good to have this this discussion and it's a tough discussion to have with Mom and Dad to you know I look I know you're on the computer a lot you mind if I take a look at your history and find out what's going on and just to make sure that everything's on the up and up I encourage people to have that involvement this is not a really long show and we've got a some really important things to talk about and I know we talk a little bit about smartphones and what's happening with smartphones that love to have your take on some of the risks that we're experiencing the I thank you that's what I have to start with a kind of an amusing story so you know I'm very much an observer of Technology's usage around our world and I was sitting in a restaurant this past weekend there was a family of 8 people there ranging from somebody I judged to be probably $65.00 to $70.00 clear down to young children and at one point of time as I looked at them every single person that table had their smartphone out doing whatever checking Facebook or e-mail or texting somebody or tweeting or whatever and it's a microcosm of what's happening in our world because the because almost there's a huge number of folks who the smartphone has almost become an appendage to the big deal there Dave though is that we now are starting to see viruses on smartphones now once again we don't see as many on Apple is we do on Droid type smartphones but there are viruses coming on smartphones 2 weeks ago one of my coworkers called me and said I had this really weird message on my i Phone and i clicked on it. And sure enough she brought a virus into her smartphone so you know we used to think smartphones were impervious to virus activity but because the bad guys are so intelligent they've now figured out ways to start to do that so you know once again that says to us be very careful about what we do and who we connect with and again as I said not to be horribly redundant but probably 80 percent of all bad activity these days you invite in through social through social engineering click this link or you have this problem click here so it's not so much the bad guy forcing their rain to your smartphone it's getting you to click on something on your smartphone that invites a virus but what's really interesting to Steve is that this geo targeting phenomenon is that they're harvesting my data self I want to buy a camp or r v or a jeep tire. This is great information is really good for us to be talking about this we're going to take a little break right now then we're going to head back into the last part of our show here we're talking with Steve Shirley from Parkview Medical Center we're talking about the risks that go along with being actively working on a computer smartphones social media etc So don't go away we're going to give you the helpful tips before we end the show we'll be right back after these briefings. Keeping the kids in Richmond campus senators police in riot gear about what they are aligned between 2 groups auto task force in Virginia one of the perhaps the worst Confederate monumentally also. It's a joining all surely your many of you were asked to being 60 years to notice that harmony lays off. A lot of suburban life hours Alison and was arrested in Can I was about to get a subway or the answer to the music likely scenario is this is their interest as he told you about you can hear our show is c 30 radio. Saturday morning and we also write up over 600 dogs that are well within what I saw you and it was a very significant We had a great design I should abort her history radio the home secretary today surely says now you know it already has you. Fox News for their own talent read work guy about t.v. And I think oh you know something might change that someone or they are just getting me to use tragedy and working with their families no one cares and to make sure we do whether or not they've struggled. People seem to think should be having some leaders are there we are that make it better let's go back in history work. At some of the things we can do is show just how much of it. Yes David going to callously.
