To look at the music of Uzbekistan and we usually that's one of our most common little series we have here on red alert going behind the Iron Curtain to focus on the music of a country under a communist regime we also have a series called call for revolution where we look at a country that's maybe under a not communist but very authoritarian regime or just a capitalist regime that people don't like and look at some of the protest music the left wing music coming out of that country but today we're not. Particularly looking at one country so much as looking at a particular a vent occurring in one country earlier we looked at doing an episode of call for revolution we looked at music of Portugal and I mentioned that I may have mentioned that we could have also done an episode on Spain and maybe we will in the future but we're not looking at the music of Spain under their fascist under their right wing dictatorship. That was calling for revolution we're focusing we're doing a special on songs about the Spanish Civil War because there was a lot of music about the Spanish Civil War Communist and not but most of it is in kind of a general left wing vein because for the left I think the Spanish Civil War which was lost by the left wing governments. Is an excellent example or a real right candidate for some last calls made by. Ology sort of in the way that for right wing people in the United States you have lost cause mythology springing up around the Confederacy in our own civil war. I prefer the lost cause. Story lines the mythologizing of the Lost Cause of the Republicans in Spain I prefer that to confederate lost cause but both because I am much more sympathetic to the aims of the Republicans and also because the cause is really a lot less lost in that situation as socialists government would return to Spain within an half century although not without a lot of pain and bloodshed. Anyhow with that said we are going to kick off our journey into the world of Spanish Civil War music with something that's not actually from Spain at all but from England because one characteristic of the Republican saw in the Spanish Civil War is they didn't really get a lot of overseas support it was the it was the Franco ist forces that were getting support from the Nazis and well I suppose the Republicans got some support from the you know Stalinist Russia although the extent I'm not no expert on the history of the Spanish Civil War So the extent of foreign support on both sides I. Am not far far from the last word on that so if you really want to know go read a book but I do know that there were a lot of foreign volunteers fighting on the Republican side from all sorts of mostly Western countries including. The British Isles.
