On it. Well. Comrade capitalists cat ever you want. To read alert the old in the show featuring communist music anti-communist music and the music of postmodern communism seemed to me 091.9 case yes b f Ben in Santa Barbara and around the globe but I have a case yes b. Dot au r g any time in the next 2 weeks via the archive at radio. America. That. Too would turn 80 and beyond in your heart I'm your host John Walsh a k a brother number 0. And this week in red alerts Well once again we've got something a little different for you last week we went behind your iron curtain. To look at the music of Uzbekistan and we usually that's one of our most common little series we have here on red alert going behind the Iron Curtain to focus on the music of a country under a communist regime we also have a series called call for revolution where we look at a country that's maybe under a not communist but very authoritarian regime or just a capitalist regime that people don't like and look at some of the protest music the left wing music coming out of that country but today we're not. Particularly looking at one country so much as looking at a particular a vent occurring in one country earlier we looked at doing an episode of call for revolution we looked at music of Portugal and I mentioned that I may have mentioned that we could have also done an episode on Spain and maybe we will in the future but we're not looking at the music of Spain under their fascist under their right wing dictatorship. That was calling for revolution we're focusing we're doing a special on songs about the Spanish Civil War because there was a lot of music about the Spanish Civil War Communist and not but most of it is in kind of a general left wing vein because for the left I think the Spanish Civil War which was lost by the left wing governments. Is an excellent example or a real right candidate for some last calls made by. Ology sort of in the way that for right wing people in the United States you have lost cause mythology springing up around the Confederacy in our own civil war. I prefer the lost cause. Story lines the mythologizing of the Lost Cause of the Republicans in Spain I prefer that to confederate lost cause but both because I am much more sympathetic to the aims of the Republicans and also because the cause is really a lot less lost in that situation as socialists government would return to Spain within an half century although not without a lot of pain and bloodshed. Anyhow with that said we are going to kick off our journey into the world of Spanish Civil War music with something that's not actually from Spain at all but from England because one characteristic of the Republican saw in the Spanish Civil War is they didn't really get a lot of overseas support it was the it was the Franco ist forces that were getting support from the Nazis and well I suppose the Republicans got some support from the you know Stalinist Russia although the extent I'm not no expert on the history of the Spanish Civil War So the extent of foreign support on both sides I. Am not far far from the last word on that so if you really want to know go read a book but I do know that there were a lot of foreign volunteers fighting on the Republican side from all sorts of mostly Western countries including. The British Isles. This saw the Taal rock to 2 teen by the young guns is from an album called The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff which is actually interesting concept album that details the life of a working class activist and just overall swell social justice oriented you living in England not exactly sure where I'm from America so my knowledge of the very regional understandingly is very regional but. That doesn't make just like a lot of people just like for a lot of foreigners. America even though its parts are very different all blurs together for me in England to an extent I mean I do know certain things but I don't know exactly where you is from but he apparently had a very interesting life that intersected with a lot of important socio political events in the 20th century the young guns did an album I think they met one of his descendants and that inspired them to do a concept album about his life and that life included a stint of volunteering for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and this song Toronto. Forgive my pronunciation is about him the wistfulness of his old memories of going off. Being on the precipice of going off to fight that conflicts. Enjoy. Here on red alert. I called Norman or were the chap called Jim I told him I'd volunteered to go spare and I was gone and that's. Totally mad see them are Saturday in a pub at Broadway but on the Saturday 5 lads turned up to wish me good luck and I just said that I had to. Be. For the picture. Among the 5 men to me. Like. It's. ily. I know that. You know. Because. He said that. As. You. Well go back if you're just now tuning in I'm your host Johnny Ushuaia k.a. Brother number 0 and you are now listening to red alert. Me show featuring communist music anti-communist music and the music of postmodern communism themed to me news this week is Episode 17 lucky 17 all over red alert and. It's on the music of the Spanish Civil War that last track. Is core all core all with a row ha a law of bomb. Off Coral deer Rudy's album concert and our key status which translates I believe to an artist's songs so yes not everyone who wanted the Republicans to win the Spanish Civil War was communists there was a variety of generally left wing political elements and that song title roughly translates to throw with Obama so yes war is occurring I don't know what the other lyrics mean so I don't really know the context of this is an x. Or Taishan to war or just one of those woe is us we are being bombed types. It could go either way it's sort of the martial tone of the instrumentation seems to kind of indicate the former to me but if you do know Spanish and. You would like to inform me what those lyrics you just heard meant the number to call is 805-893-2424 That's 8058932424805893 cup and where mine dear you can find the playlist for this show and all the other episodes of red alert before it on red alerts Facebook page at a red alerts and. Whether you all are listening. With your dial tuned to 91.9 in Santa Barbara or you are listening live over a case u.s.b. Dot o.-r. G. Or on the 2 we guard and Radio Free America you can all go follow red alert on Facebook to get. Play lists for a minute show time reminders advance notice of what episodes are coming up means etc We've been a bit quiet lately on the Facebook page but and by we I mean of course I this isn't. This is not. This is a d.i.y. Operation we're running over here and by we I want to get mean I But now that those dreaded that bane of college life finals are over things might get a little bit interesting so make sure to follow red alert but I. Want to hear more music that's coming right up before that song we heard 2 versions of all last para caught us to the barricades. Classic song of the Spanish Civil War we heard a version in Spanish and English 2 languages for the price of $1.00 by the female fronted junk bands. The dandelion junk Queens and I think that is a pretty interesting intersection of different cultures and musical traditions I really like this cover of the track but before that we had the other version. By lost more air tools de Cristo I'm not sure where these guys are from they appear to be a rock band or punk band of sorts. Judging from something that sounded a bit like excuse me like. A bagpipe . I suspect they may be from goalies 2 but that's just kind of a shot in the dark. But I also really like their more aggressive cover of a loss Barrett caught us now if you're wondering why Last but not least we heard the triumph of our tired eyes by the celebrated poster rock groups over a mountain Diane Now if you're wondering why I played this it's because while you heard those versions of OS law last para caught us and the eagle eared among you will have heard that near the end of that silver mounted on track the vocalist repeats to the barricades multiple times which given silver mounted is noted anti-capitalist political affiliation is almost certainly a reference to this song and by extension the Spanish Civil War And if on the off chance not well. That's a bit awkward for me but you got Congratulations you got to hear an extra amazing songs that you really think that one is amazing even though I can be a little bit apprehensive of post rock times coming up next we're going to hear some tracks from a suite album. Called. What's that called. Bright spots of the Spanish snow Pasar on Scots of the Spanish Civil War Now you can't find this album everywhere I don't know if it's on very many streaming services it's off a label that's basically you know just promoting Scottish music but it doesn't appeal to appear to have a very high profile elsewhere and I think that's a bit of a shame because there's a very excellent tracks here highlighting a very under looked aspect of history outside of Scotland East which is the presence of Scottish volunteers I mentioned international volunteers before I mentioned in England we had a song about English volunteer earlier but. There was apparently a significant Scottish presidents in the Spanish Civil War On the Republican side and there is now a book which collects. Different kinds of music and different kinds of experiences from that history into one place I highly recommend it and we're going to hear some tracks from it right now here on red alert starting off with this song deck by Dick . Gone titled Jamie 4 years. Well a lot. By Haim's Fahringer is the brain. Name to staunch the morning. But as far as the line Scots are. Jamie for. That stamp. The claims there's how. We just heard. You Lee yet 1936 by. And really I don't really know when they are actually but I suspect they all were. French and judging from that song they sound pretty punk perhaps with given the topic and the general by with some anarchist tendencies this album that this is off of is 71862136 I don't know what that means but it was released in 1906 of these guys have been around for a while so pretty. Pretty loud bruising sound for the 80s. Or for any period mind you and I don't know exactly 100 percent for sure that this is about the Spanish Civil War but I don't know what else would be going on in 1936 that a politically charged. Band would be singing about potentially the $936.00 Berlin Olympics but this sounds like something to do with. The beginning of the Spanish Civil War which occurred in 1006 before that we had and Trent. Excuse me el Trin. Blin Dago by Yes that's right your x. Well not your x. It's the x. So I guess it's a archetype of everyone's x. That you just cringe slightly upon recalling. This album or really e.p. I think it is is called 936 and guess what yes it is about the Spanish Civil Yeah the Spanish Civil War they.
