This is Weekend Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Scott Simon there are about 100 Democrats in the House of Representatives and one independent or former Republican who supports starting impeachment proceedings against President Trump one of the Democrats as representative and 11 of Michigan tonight the district who joins us now Mr Levin thanks for being with us hey it's great to with you Scott a 100 is not even a majority of the 235 House Democrats so what do you tell a fellow Democrats who may say I look I just don't think we have a vote. You know I really think all this sort of horse race tracking and vote counting and this is the point if most of my going to occur are colleagues believe as I do that Donald Trump commits impeachable offenses every day he's in office he trial a team all humans caused by taking money from foreign governments in many different ways is Properties imagine being invited as a new member of Congress to by a foreign government to an advance. That they're paying for at the Trump Hotel to just astounding he violates other basic norms by. Turning the presidency into a piggy bank not just from foreign governments so things go far beyond the mother report the question is how to proceed strategically and whether whether we can succeed with any Pietschmann process Well you know 100 of us say that the best way to proceed is to go ahead and start an inquiry because it will be more focused more expeditious and it will get the information to the American people in a way that they're used to getting it through their streams and their television but the media course is you know Mr Levin you are from a political family or the nephew or former senator your father once held your 9th District seat. President Trump isn't winning any popularity polls at the moment but neither is impeachment fact we found a poll in The Detroit News that says 53 percent of voters in Michigan are opposed to impeachment hearings so could calling for impeachment just wind up harming Democratic candidates especially in swing districts in your own swing state. Well I don't think so and in any event there's a little problem we took an oath of office that says we hold the Constitution and I really don't think impeachment is a question for popularity contest you know the Congress we have a job description from the Constitution that says that we have to pass legislation and holds ministration to account and saying we should legislate but not investigate it's sort of like saying a teacher should instruct but not great papers or ministers preach but not marry or bury anyone in a flock I mean this is a constitutional obligation of ours and we need to. Carried out with seriousness and I actually if you want my thought about the wisdom of the immense wisdom of the American public I think they will not be happy with us if they feel like we're cynical or just doing things for political gain so we've got to we've got to undertake our job Scott whatever it may be well let me let me put it this way that there is a there's a lot of urgent news in the world. Even this week there's North Korea Iran Syria immigration what's going on at the southern border doesn't impeachment take up months of time and attention and effort that Congress really should apply to getting a lot of other important things done cults got if you all would only cover the other work we're doing like you're obsessed with Pietschmann I hears the thing all right that's rare we did call you about this but go ahead yeah no seriously I'm not I'm not I'm a newbie here and I'm just a freshman just think of the body of work we've already built in the House of Representatives we've passed legislation to protect people with preexisting conditions we pass legislation to control out of control prescription drug prices we've raised the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour by 2025 which would give $33000000.00 Americans a race we've just protected the pensions of millions America and you know I could go on and I wish the media would focus more on all of that the legislation we're passing to protect the American people and how the Senate should get in the game and work with us on it we don't have a choice but to oversee. The administration and we just need to investigate it's all in the most expeditious and effective way possible and you know of many of us that's to go ahead and get going with an impeachment inquiry so we'll get the information to the American people representative and 11 of Michigan thanks so much saying it's got appreciate your interest and impeachment proceedings are all. Set to begin in Puerto Rico against the governor there but just before midnight Wednesday after days of protests the governor announced his resignation governor Rocio will leave office next week N.P.R.'s David Welner is in San Juan David thanks for being with us good morning Scott remind us how this remarkable turn of events came about well Governor had already come under a lot of criticism for graft in his administration and how poorly he handled the hurricane Maria disaster a couple of years ago but what really detonated this grassroots movement that pushed him from power was the publication 2 weeks ago of nearly 900 pages of a private online chat group that he was part of now the governor's nickname is Rickey So of course these quickly became known as the Ricky leaks and they were filled with sexist homophobic remarks and even jokes about hurricane victims the daily demonstrations kept growing and this week Congress announced impeachment proceedings and then he announced his resignation we've seen the protest what's what's been the even larger public reaction to Governor Rosales resignation Well you know this place just exploded with rejoicing when he announced that and many here see this as a real show of people power a popular uprising that had no clear leaders but still got the job done I talked with Deepak. In economists who took part in the protests about what it means that Rosales bowing out and here's what he had to say I think it opens up a window for us to say when we get tired of being put down when we are mocked and when we are disregarded we have the power to take to the streets we have to power to raise our voice and make ourselves heard and take action and make things happen . David who is a likely to be the next person to occupy the fortress as the governor's mansion is known in San Juan Well by law and next in line to be the governor would be the secretary of state but he quit after the Rickey the scandal broke so after him comes the secretary of justice want to. Vasquez she says she's ready to be sworn in as governor next Friday which is when Rosales says he'll step down but the people who wanted Rosie o. Khalid say she'd just be more of the same I asked a university professor named leader or to his at a street rally if she and her friends were on board with Vazquez becoming the 2nd woman to serve as governor here here's what she told me we're not we're not this woman has been in defender of a multiple controversy if I sound secretary of just eating is really hath not done the type of job that the position requires and what's more this woman who would appear to be Rocio successor is now implicated in a new bunch of chats leaked this week they have her declining as secretary of Justice to investigate reports of missing hurricane relief containers the governor's wife had been in charge of distributing the contents of those containers and this is being seen as an effort to protect her from being investigated the justice secretary calls this all false and defamatory but the Office of Government Ethics here said yesterday it's looking into her actions and there's a lot of speculation that the governor may be for stepping down appoint a new secretary of state and that would be who'd succeed him just who that person might be nobody knows for sure but it seems like anyone the governor the governor picks would be tainted by the hand that shows him now N.P.R.'s David Well now from San Juan thanks so much for being with us you're welcome Scott the u.s. Justice Department will allow t. Mobile and sprint to merge both companies agreed to some concessions 5 years after they 1st proposed the idea but a group of states and rural wireless carriers still challenge the merger as N.P.R.'s Alina reports among the 4 nationwide carriers Sprint house historically had a good reputation with companies that provide cell phone service in rural areas so that's been a very nice relationship between Sprint and they're all carriers what he mumbled that relationship has not been so nice Carrie Bennett is a lawyer who represents the rural Wireless Association. She says when customers of smaller rural carriers travel out of the area they rely on bigger companies like Sprint to cover them these rural carriers also need bigger providers for access to high quality airwaves so-called spectrum that carry your data and calls and now that t. Mobile is buying Sprint close to 80 rural carriers worry about what that means for them if they don't have access to that spectrum they don't have access to those roaming agreements that lead Enron America will not have affordable service this is a big concern for the regulators but in the end the Justice Department struck a deal to approved the mobiles purchase of sprint for $26000000000.00 Much of this deal has to do with the government's goal of speeding up the rollout of 5 g. Wireless service the new generation of data connections t. Mobile and Sprint argue that together they would be a stronger 5 g. Challenger to Verizon and 18 on Friday's earnings call to mobile c.e.o. John Legere also said the prices won't go up we are going to create a bigger and bolder competitor with a transformative 5 g. Network another key element of the deal the government is pushing one more company to become the new 4th wireless provider Dish Network dish will buy Sprint's prepaid phone businesses Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile and it promises to also start building a 5 g. Network but Bennett and other critics point out Dish has long had spectrum and has not built a wireless network plus for the 1st few years dish will rely on ti mobiles network to operate Here's New York attorney general Leticia James dish has never shown any inclination or they're ready to build a nationwide mobile network on its own James is one of 14 attorneys general suing to block the merger Bennett's rural Wireless Association is also challenging the deal Meanwhile t. News I'm Scott Simon president trumps personal meetings with Kim Jong un of open the door to a new level of engagement with North Korea if a Democrat manages to defeat Trump and 2020 they'll have to decide whether to keep that door open N.P.R.'s he sure Rosco reports on what the candidates are sane foreign policy didn't come up too much during the 1st Democratic debates in June but California senator Comolli Harris did manage to get in this dig at President trop you want to talk about North Korea real threat in terms of a nuclear arsenal but what is he to hear braces came to a dictator for the sake of a photo op Here's his remarks came days before Trump met with Kim Jong un for the 3rd time and before he became the 1st sitting u.s. President to step foot inside North Korea twenties when the Democrats running for president seem united on at least one point they feel trumps talks with Kim have not achieved enough I'm not quite sure why this president is so bad on elevating the profile of a dictator like Kim Jong when Kim gentle has not lived up to his promise from the 1st summit that's former heard Secretary Julio Castro on c.n.n. Last month Senator any club which I was also not a fan here she is all C.B.S.'s Face the Nation you know you just can't look at this as going over and talking to here dictator next door and bringing them a hot dish over the fence despite the criticism both club which on Cashel said that it's important to talk to adversaries and open up diplomatic channels the politics around the Korea have shifted says trot 1st shook hands with Kim now a number of Democrats are at least willing to entertain the idea of sitting down with a dictator one of those candidates is Senator Bernie Sanders his foreign policy adviser Matthew does says Sanders will be open to a face to face meeting it would be without preconditions but certainly not without preparation and I think that's what we've seen from Trump is that there's a real lack of preparation on the president's part when he goes to sit. Down with can well former President Barack Obama was running for the White House he made a similar pledge to meet with America's adversaries but he was pummeled by conservatives for even broaching the topic and never followed through on the summit Sarah Vogler is a North Korea leadership analyst at c.n.a. a Map profit research group she says that for better or worse any president who follows Trump will have to continue with the political reality he leaves behind if Trump approach does not yield significant gains or success then it is going to be very difficult for whoever comes after him to justify why their leader to leader approach will be different Vogler says Trump's unconventional presidency has given him leeway that more traditional politicians may not enjoy conditions may never get to the point where a u.s. Democratic president would have the domestic support of the political support to offer the kind of opening negotiating positions that the North Koreans are interested in one no Korea may not come up much during the 2nd Democratic debate next week the country continues to test missiles and will be a challenge for whoever is president after 2020 I saw Roscoe in p.r. News Washington. Casler of Will medal a noise 10 years old she loves classical music Beethoven is your favorite composer last month she tried to get a free concert given by Yo-Yo Ma in Chicago when she and her brother and sister reached the front of the line they were told the venue in Millennium Park was already full. On you was disappointed she wrote a letter to the editor of The Chicago Tribune that letter was read by Yo-Yo Ma and to tell us more reached on you Kester on the phone from her home outside Chicago Hi there. Why did you write the letter well I sort of wanted to tell what I had experienced and what had happened someone else and I started wanting to do something about it also my mom suggested it and I thought it was a good idea yeah you were disappointed not to be able to get into that concert even though you guys just showed up real early right. And just missed out at the last 2nd it sounds like yeah we were the 1st family to be stopped by the security guards Wow and were a lot of people saying oh I bet some of my family is already in there yeah like every few minutes somebody come up and says if you like my life is inside my kids are inside and then the security guards are. Actually they stopped doing that because I think they're starting to get suspicious like not everyone can have family inside yeah yeah I'm getting suspicious myself just hearing you tell the story. Tell me what happened when you as I as I've heard the story you got home and saw a big fat on follow up sticking out of your mail slot or something yeah so I was jump roping was my friend and I live just was like hey what's this in she picked up by below and I just came up to look and then she was like Oh I think it's from Yemen I was like you started jumping around and 'd squealing and staff well what will what did your ma say it is sickly said I'm sorry that had to go through it and I'm glad that you did something about it and good luck in your musical career Yeah and you you play music yourself right yeah I've been playing piano for quite a few years like 4 or 5 and then this school year I started playing violin with my school orchestra boy here busy well. How extraordinary to have this kind of personel response from Yo-Yo Ma You must feel very lucky special Yes I don't fear I would really like to thank him and staff for you know taking the time and effort that's a new question or Beethoven buff Yo-Yo Ma fan for life it has been wonderful to talk to you made my day. It's hard to grow old in America and that bash law finger is almost 90 lives in a comfortable apartment in Manhattan lined with books art and family photos she made out of Nazi occupied France has children and grandchildren in the area and says she knows she's blessed but I thought that when you are getting older a tear it comes in little steps you know slowly 1st one thing is a little bit weaker than another then another. But it turns out that everything happens at the same time and all of a send you find that you don't he is so well you don't see so well and all of a sudden you have bit a body. You don't even recognize people can live longer but lose a lot of everyday abilities which can frustrate and depress the elderly then they lose people close to them Children who grow up and move around the country spouses and siblings who die friends who begin to fade and loss one friend who died as a reset the vows I meant cheat at the end didn't know who I was at a law you know I say you lose them before they die. And. Cancer and all kinds of face that's one of the most difficult things and here we should say that parts of the story will be hard to hear because it's about this sobering statistic people 65 years of age and older now account for nearly a 5th of all suicide in this country and older people who attempt suicide are much more likely to die I think you begin to question your value you begin to question your purpose Dr Jerry Reed is a senior vice president at the Education Development Center in Washington d.c. Where he works to prevent suicides among the elderly if you start to feel like you don't belong and you're a burden and you have access to lethal means whether it's medication whether it's a farm or whatever and you don't think there's hope for resolution in the future those dynamics can contribute to you starting to think about maybe the world would be better off without me many experts cite many reasons why this may be true but often begin by saying a lot of elderly people no longer feel useful I think we have a culture of when you work you have value and when you no longer work we kind of dismiss you Dr Julie record founded the Suicide Prevention Coalition of North Central Washington State in 2012 following a rash of suicides nearby the thing I get asked often is. You know why do we care right and I think you know people say well they're going to die anyway they're seniors and isn't that part of being older and and so people feel that and senior still docs and I know that part of the struggle that my mom has had is a loss of identity Dr Rickard brought her mother Sherry Adler. She's 72 has suffered 2 strokes and says older people with frailties can in her words hide in their houses sometimes im afraid to drive and sometimes I'm afraid to go anywhere because I'm afraid I'm going to fall and I hurt myself really bad when I fall so it kind of leaves me in the house and it's sad you get lonely I mean that's why I go like to Wal-Mart and talk to all the old people because nobody else will talk to me but they'd like to talk a few months ago during a holiday dinner a member of their family who has a mental illness said something hurtful and personal to Sherry Adler his family loves him and understand his struggles but I think that it it was just more than I could handle and. I just made a stupid mistake. I guess I just wanted to give up because I felt like I wasn't good. And that's all I ever want it to be I've got to ask you what that stupid mistake was. Just. Trying to kill myself. Yeah yeah that was a tough call I received Dr Rickard was on her way home at the time her mother had driven her to the airport and she had to change planes on her way back to Washington state and so during that layover she called and said I just want to say goodbye I love you and I just appreciate everything you've ever done and and normally I would think oh that's a sign of suicide but it was during my layover so I had just left her and my whole life she had always cried when I laughed and you know would always say I love you in. Here. This time. It was good bye. It was it was very painful for both Julie and I. It's one of those things where I question myself because of my work that I do and I'm preventing suicide with everybody but not my mom it wasn't her fault it's not like I told her anything because they didn't tell her anything because I didn't even know that things got so bad that I was just numb Sherry Adler got professional help including medication and says she's no longer so despondent she thinks she might move closer to her daughter in Washington State Dr Rickard says her own mother's suicide attempt remind her why many elderly people find it hard to seek help there often parents and grandparents who've seen a lot of life they feel they should be the ones who offer Hill why I have always been the one to do it she's always been the strong one right I mean my mom was the warrior us in my life and so now roles are reversed and I think it will never raise my kids alone and a. I've just always been there for all my children and now it's the other way around. It's hard. And then. A young woman named Amanda Weiss often stops by to visit a net past law finger in her New York apart what have you been up to today. Well I wouldn't call it too exciting part of it was in the morning I went to see the idea to to see how I was progressing it wasn't so he's a volunteer with a local group called Hebrew for generations that provide services to elderly people the 2 women think of their visits as a friendship between generations as the number of elderly people in the United States grows and their challenges multiply simple human contact can remind them of the gifts of life and that bashful finger told us it's good to the knife it's really good to smell a flower or a to see things bloom or to see the sunset or to hear the voice of somebody in love all the things that really make a day special. And if you feel you're in a crunch please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 18027325 . Listening to Weekend Edition from n.p.r. News. The Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are investigating big tech companies in part to learn what they do with users' data California is already trying to protect user privacy and in Maine there's a new law that aims to restore the protections that were rolled back by the trumpet ministration and Congress Steve Missler from Maine Public Radio reports your Internet service provider whether it's a broadband provider at home or the telecoms that connect your phone to the Web can see almost all of the on encrypted information that you share while using the Internet g.g. Soane is a fellow at Georgetown Law and sees every e-mail that crosses its pipes it sees everything everything your browsing history which apps you use the location of your mobile device so on is also a former attorney for the Obama era Federal Communications Commission that drafted to 2016 privacy rule that would have barred Internet service providers commonly called I s P's from selling all that personal data without your consent but that data are valuable to the I s P's which can sell it to companies for highly targeted advertising so this is not exactly a secret here about who doesn't like these broadband privacy rules 2 years ago the industry convinced the Republican controlled Congress and President Donald Trump to overturn the privacy rules and that's how soon this spring and it up testifying before the Maine legislature in an attempt to secure privacy regulations for i.s.p. Is operating in the state when the federal government stands down the state government should stand up Democratic state Sen shine a bellows tried that 2 years ago but the bill failed with a new legislature she tried again this year everything you do on line goes through your Internet Service Provider and that's why it's so important they should not be profiting off your personal information large I s P's and attorneys from trade groups like the Internet and television. Association argued that the bill unfairly targeted I s P's while excluding so-called edge providers like Google and Facebook it from mean politicians who want to defend Facebook to call and thousands of other Internet companies from new privacy legislation the mainstay Chamber of Commerce spent thousands of dollars on digital ads like that one buying space on websites like Facebook Sen bellows the bill's sponsor says there's a big difference between regulating I s P's and edge providers mainly that you can't get to sites like Google and Facebook without I a species the on ramp to the internet I dish and only Facebook and Google are free services that you pay for with your privacy your Internet service provider charges you a lot of money for that access to the Internet the bill passed overwhelmingly in the main legislature before Democratic governor Janet Mills signed into law what privacy advocates say is the toughest in all 50 states consumers don't have to ask I asked p.s. Not to sell their data the burden is on the i s P's to ask customers for permission going a step further than a new law in California Charter Communications one of the largest I s P's in the country declined a request for an interview and issued a statement saying the main proposal is deeply flawed because it could lead to a patchwork of state regulations but Gigi soon who watched as I a speech spent millions of dollars overturning the federal privacy rule is unsympathetic and hopes other states follow Maine's lead and don't push Humpty Dumpty off the wall and then complain when he breaks into 50 pieces and barring a lawsuit by the I s P's at least one part of Humpty Dumpty will go back up on the wall in July 1st of next year when the Maine law takes effect for n.p.r. News I'm Scott Simon Grindr the mobile dating app is now on the market it's been on the hunt for a buyer after its current Chinese owner was accused of sharing users' h.i.v. Status with 3rd parties Grindr was launched a decade ago as a way for gay men to meet and not just for dinner and a movie but in addition to which legal issues grinder is disappointed some l.g.b. T.q. People met the road ragers is a former staff writer at grinder's own news site in 2 he joins us from New York thanks so much for being with us Mr Rodriguez thank you for having me what did grinder want to be for queer people Grindr was at the intersection of 2 very interesting phenomena and historical timelines Grindr was the newest iteration in a long history of the way that queer people found each other great so we're talking about going back to classified ads chat rooms you know so I think in 2 and Grindr more broadly we're trying to evolve and really find out what does it mean for queer people to connect and it doesn't only have to be for dating or for beyond a dinner and a movie like you said I think that it could also be like what does it mean to use stories about queer people to foster connection how did things change when the Chinese owner took over. So I would say that because of all of the envisions that Grindr had when I got there and have 2017 it was a very potent time it was a time where there was a lot of excitement for all the things that in 2 could do and I would just say that there was a cultural shift when cooling took over and that there was a somewhat of a cultural mismatch you know when you buy an app I don't think that coming from a completely different world and having a lot of heterosexual leadership I don't think they understood that this wasn't an app that was just on your phone that maybe didn't have as much to do with your identity this was something that people felt some really strong emotions behind what did it mean for a lot of people who work a grinder established to be a voice and a part of the lives of queer people in the United States to have the president of Grindr say marriage should always be between a man and a woman well I can tell you there were a lot of people who were saying you know it's really important that the people who are in charge of an app that is so much a part of queer life really have clear people's best interests at heart and felt that the story that we told was an important one so I was very outdated Why would somebody who has those views on marriage that that's only between a man and a woman want anything to do much less own and run an app for queer people. Grindr made money and I do think that I'm going to day you know we were under a corporation that had to have to make money but I think that that is really the question that's out at the heart of it is can someone who doesn't understand grinders place in the community should they be the person making money off of the app right that's also something that we are really concerned about who is making that money and who are the people leading and making decisions and are they aware of the very complex role that grinder plays not only in American crew people's lives but quick people's lives abroad so I think that's really at the heart of it as well Matthew Rodriguez an editor with The Body dot com which provides a Treasury information and support Thanks so much for being with us thank you and now it's time for sports. Records in Korea the Derby n.b.a. Season reaches its halfway mark birthdays All-Star Game and twin tragedies in the grisly business of boxing N.P.R.'s Tom Goldman joins us Tom thanks for being with us thank you Scott not one even but 2 boxing deaths this week yeah Russian mech seemed to dash of an Argentine who go Sunday on both died from brain injuries a few days after their fights last weekend certainly not the 1st boxing deaths but being so close together just 2 days apart that's very dramatic and has the boxing world split once again between those calling for reform and those saying it's tragic but it's just part of the game you want to have both reported on the human damage in boxing over the years and I dare say it's one of the reasons we don't talk about it a lot here we you know we we both were coral at this sometimes really being called a sport and you know when I love sports. We often talk about what boxing should do is there something fans can do to make it less destructive You know I suppose they can take their money out of the sport as long as there's demand boxing will continue and and not see a need to change but if fans stop betting if they stop buying paper reviews stop attending fights and let the powers that be know this is a protest maybe that would spur the kind of reform that might help reducing the length of fights 0 tolerance of performance enhancing drugs which there isn't now a ringside doctors with neurological and concussion training at all fights and ensuring boxers train safely brain injuries may happen initially in training and not be detected by the time they fight but you know Scott even if meaningful reform happens death happens to you know it's the nature of a sport where the goal is to hit someone to the point of unconsciousness and in the words of Hall of Fame boxing writer Nigel Collins it's up to each of us to face that reality and decide whether or not it's worth the price yeah. Los Vegas this afternoon the w. N.b.a. All-Star game means the women's basketball season is halfway through what teams have been most successful so far well it's been a very competitive season so far led by Connecticut and Las Vegas both with $13.00 and $6.00 records but not leading by much 8 of the 12 teams go to the playoffs in the 8th team Minnesota is only 3 and a half games out of 1st place the contenders include defending champion Seattle which lost League Most Valuable Player Briana Stewart and star Sue bird before the season to injuries there were predictions of doom but the storm of stayed together they played well and they're in the thick of the race right now and Tom were a year out from the 2020 Olympics the World World Swimming Championships are to I know you've just begun to pack World Swimming Championships are taking place in South Korea right now what what might we see in these championships. That can help us look forward to next year in Tokyo Well you know it might be a good preview although Americans hope not too much of a pre preview for super swimmer Kadal a decade she's had a really tough time of it in South Korea illness forced her to drop out of 2 events but just today see out some redemption I saw yes she won the 800 meter freestyle for the 4th straight time out for Pete at the World Championships and for those who love controversy there's been plenty of that related to China's son that Yang there are strong doping suspicions about him he served a drug ban 5 years ago and fellow swimmers haven't been shy about speaking are acting out competitors who won medals in races he won refused to stand on the victory stand with them and after he won the 200 meter freestyle British swimmer Duncan Scott who tied for 3rd wouldn't have his picture taken with son as they left the stage son turned around and called Scott a loser and said he son was a winner now Scott whether this all plays out at the Olympics depends on an upcoming hearing where son could get a lifetime ban though for a strange incident with drug testers who showed up to give him a drug test but he reportedly destroyed blood samples with a hammer so we'll see if that plays out in Tokyo N.P.R.'s Tom Goldman thanks so much and we should note last night and South Korea 3 u.s. Water polo players were injured when a balcony collapsed 2 South Korean men were killed Christopher Ramsey the c.e.o. Of USA water polo said players from our men's and women's teams were celebrating the Women's World Championship victory when the collapse occurred at a public club our hearts go out to the victims of the crash and their families. There's a provocative exchange at the beginning of the 1st episode of My Life as a murder a woman scrolled through images of glistening pics and washboard abs and chatting on the phone like. Of herself. That of course. Sounds fabulous. And it's. A problem. I have had. It turns out to be strictly business crime solving business that is Lucy Lawless plays Alexa Crowe a retired detective called back into police work as a consultant on some of the most baffling murders in Victoria Australia Lucy Lawless is also executive producer of the series about to prepare on a cord t.v. In the United States and Lucy Lawless who will always be Xena Warrior Princess generation of viewers and Diane on Parks and Recreation but especially Xena Warrior Princess joins us from New York thanks so much for being with us Scott it's so nice to be back with you again Well thank you for saying having me I enjoyed the episodes I saw and. Alexa uses skills and guile but I want to reassure people no and then she gets to throw someone around doesn't she use what little I was to be honest with you I was a bit chagrined by that because that was never my favorite part of the job but. Not really did it snow I always hated it but I didn't have any choice you know if you don't have a choice about something he really or didn't to invest in it emotionally so I just get it over and Don laughs but it's always a shock when they say I have to run out of the way of a car. But you know how to do that yes I say I have a stunt woman but there is it's always known Yes because that's how it's done but there is some amount of selling before immediately after. It doesn't get easier with every passing decade. We don't learn a lot about a lecture all at once but it comes out in occasional lines may I ask what's the good luck charm as she calls it in her shoulder it's the tip of a knife from a drug dealer that reminds her that she got away scot free from that bad deal when that deal went down and I think she's just being dry and tough. You know when she pretends that's a good look Yeah and she's sure she's widowed she is widowed her husband was also a detective and died in the line of duty and we we explore that loss in a slightly light hearted way when we go into the world of the to take it because every episode we try to take you into another sector all of life you know some party you've never been invited to some might be the world of the very beautiful people and p.r. And models where you get to see the ugly underpinnings of that business and there are themes which then reflected back on. Alexa Crowe herself so you get we're going to lift the veil a little bit and have some fun and push you justice in those wells and it's really satisfying you know it's lovely to pursue justice and I mean. Well you know the verisimilitude of justice when you spend an hour with people that you like on television in a very beautiful vibrant environment and get this lovely sense all of tieing catching the bad guy to me it's a little bit of a chance to recruit because the news of it grim these days and it's just nice to have a little bit of like a sucky break the series also shows off it Turia. Very picturesque this town is incredible now but I got city in the I've never been there before and this town is such a foodies paradise and at one time it was the richest city on Earth during the Gold Rush that's where they bank with gold and it was also quick to tell me not a penal colony is where free man free English people chose to settle so they see themselves as being a little more genteel and certainly it is a much more sedate city flat and beautifully planned with a wonderful light rail system. Which everybody uses it's clean it's efficient and everything runs on time and. Just miles upon miles of Victorian Edwardian housing which is very low rise so it's a super sedate charming cosmopolitan town and very stylish met May I ask you what do you make of the impression that gene is still seems to leave on a lot of lives all over the world when he bowled with Naaman did I give you I don't know no not at all not remotely but I don't want to talk you through shadow Ok I don't right now we don't give the folks using a question I'm sorry let's do that a good. Enough about Melbourne Lucy. Well back to me they were not about Melbourne back to me Well what do you make of the impression Regina still seems to have with a lot of people well I'm I'm really delighted because people are so kind to me I think I've been around long enough that everybody knows me from something and it's like I'm a like a really cute walking dinosaur or something you know they're really nice to me than afraid of me they're not cold to me I don't know I think I've got some must have some camp lost or about me that makes me. People feel friendly towards me and I'm really gratified and delighted by that you you were one of the founding sisters of women superhero characters I never feel I can really take credit for that it was super in the Alien movies before me and. And the real me and some Indian warrior princess so I was delighted I should be one of the new and the ninety's iteration Yeah but certainly it was new on television at the time and people said it would never work I'm I'm going to guess you could have a happy life just living open your residual checks what do you know you're wrong if you like $0.90 each. Really there was no. No fortune to be made in residuals and syndicated television it's not like you know doing a sitcom or something but I mustn't grumble it's given me everything well what do you still enjoy about working oh my God if I think I love that what's beautiful about television is that you have a very long list of tasks of the day so all day long you're just checking them off so it's really satisfying and your problem solving in order to make the day getting it all done on time. In as joyful as possible that's that's a really satisfying day's work you know and hopefully make something that people like but even if they don't like it well you're already paid in your ahead of time so that's that. Kind of it's incidental to me whether it's a success or not. Lucy Lawless stars in and as executive producer of my life is murder and you are struggling crime drama with comedic tortures of course on a current t.v.
