Dave, why the delay . Bruce, it was a situation where the contractor hired by the city needed more time to prepare a contract. Picking up thousands of sandbags curbside is not cheap with the estimate at about 475 thousand the city request people who wanted sandbags removed to have them out by the street by seven oclock this morning. Landlord michele kolsrud was still working on it and appreciated the delay. The city says sandbags can go curbside on the right of way, in the street for lightly traveled roadways or even in a corner of driveways. And watching them disappear will make many residents feel good. I think soyeah. Itll look like its going back to normal. Residents who want sandbags removed will need to follow instructions. One big nono is placing sandbags in alleys. These sandbags wont be picked up. The flood has the Buchanan County Disaster Recovery coalition reactivating. Organizers formed it after the flood of 1999, and has reactivated it several times to help people impacted by natural disasters in their county. People should First Contact their Insurance Company if they have flood damage. Then they can apply to the states Assistance Program through dhs. Theyre also taking donations. Cedar falls says home values in the northern part of the city dont justify building a levee to protect against flooding. The cedar river crested above major flood stage a little more than two weeks ago. And floodwaters reached quite a few homes on the north side of cedar falls. With the mayor about the costs and benefits of building a levee there. This area at north cedar elementary was covered in more than 7 feet of flood waters just weeks ago. Some of it is clearing out. You can actually walk on the playground and sit on the benches, but there is still about 2 feet of water that needs to be pumped out. This spot also flooded badly in 2008. The city built a levee to protect its downtown, but it says it cant get federal funding to of the city. It says thats because a Feasibility Study done in the 1990s showed that the cost of building a levee here is more than the value of the area. Youd have to go to a 500 year level which would be very if you kind of compare it to where it is across the street at the levees downtown, thats just very cost prohibitive of going that far that high and that wide. I also asked the mayor if the city plans on moving any of the residents. Hear his response, and a woman who says she will stay and fight the flood waters tonight at 10. They were asking the state to change columbus day to indigenious peoples day. They want to honor the native americans who were in the us before Christopher Columbus arrived.
