The 15 year old boy has lifethreatening injuries. Police say he shot himself just before eight this morning outside the schools auditorium. They rushed him to a hospital and roped off the area where it happened. Jefferson went under a short lockdown, but no one else was injured. Kcrg tv nines Dave Franzman joins us from Jefferson High School tonight. Dave, what have students told you about this . Who reported hearing some kind of a popping sound as they were entering one of the school buildings. Police dont believe anyone witnessed the shooting, and it was the sound that prompted those here to investigate and find the wounded student. Immediately after the reports of a selfinflicted shooting, jefferson began a lockdown procedure. That means one student who was off campus when it happened also discovered that meant you couldnt come back inside either. I called my mom because they wouldnt let us in. They told us to go home, and then they sent a call out later saying we could come back. The lockdown here ended after about two hours, and students and parents got a choice. They could stay in class with counselors available or go home immediately. Some parents wanted their students at home. My older son, hes pretty upset too he wants to come out, so im going to pull both of them out there was no one else involved aside from the student who tried to take his own life, and he was not near other students at the time. Theres no indication the individual had gone into the school earlier. We believe the individual went to this location outside the auditorium and at that point discharged the weapon. Students told tv9 about half left early, and the other half stayed till the end of the regular school day. Couldnt recall any signs of distress. Hes just an acquaintance like hi and bye, but its always a happy incident when im talking to him. Aloysius schmitt died aboard a battleship on december 7th, 1941 during the pearl harbor attack. He was a graduate of what is now Loras College, and he was a Roman Catholic priest. They stood on the roof while volunteers collected money as cars went through the drive thru. It helps raise money for Special Olympics iowa.
