About zika. My first reaction was to think about the folks we had down there so i went to the cdc website. Trying to find the symptoms and what is the impact of the disease if you do have it. A lot of us got mosquito bites, it happens down there none of the 11 people who went with schmitz reported any symptoms. But that doesnt eliminate concern. Health experts say 80 percent of adults show no symptoms at all. The greatest risk is to newborns with zika connected to a brain abnormity called microcephaly characterized by much smaller than normal heads at birth. Dr. Andrea greiner is a high risk pregnancy physician at university of iowa hospitals. Her main concern now is making sure pregnant women know the potential risks. I think were being conservative in following what the cdc and our professional organizations tell us. Pregnant women should not travel to countries where zika is known to be active vaccines yet to prevent a zika infection from mosquitoes. So until more is known, the word is be cautious. The Mission Leader just back from haiti tol us he doesnt see any reason to cancel future trips yet except for telling pregnant women not to go to those countries. But that could change if World Health Leaders decide there are other risks for travelers. Live in the newsroom, Dave Franzman kcrg tv9 news.
