The Sheriffs Office says 18yearold Bethany Clark of belle plaine lost control of her car on highway 212 about five miles west of marengo. They say the road was frost covered when the accident happened about 7 15 this morning. Clark and her twoyearold son, roran, were in the vehicle when it caught on fire. They died at the scene. The icy Road Conditions caused two crashes involving seven vehicles in cedar rapids. Police say the first crash happened near the edgewood road southwest overpass over highway 30 about 5 45 am. And while police were responding, they crashed into a jeep. One of the officers had non lifethreatening injuries. No one else was hurt. The crashes closed edgewood road in that area for three hours. Lisbon police are searching for a man who broke into a local bar and may have burglarized some homes as well. Police say the man broke into early in the morning on december 27th. This is Surveillance Video from that morning. Police say he stole money and also damaged a cash register, an atm, a juke box, and game machines. A waterloo daycare provider faces a child endangerment charge after a baby died in her care. Police arrested Amy Hangartner yesterday. An unresponsive one year old boy at her home daycare at 1415 bertch avenue. The child later died at a nearby hospital. An investigation shows the boy became unresponsive while strapped in a car seat for his nap. Police say hangartner did not have a registered daycare. The heat is back on at both the linn county courthouse and jail. Now county leaders need to figure out exactly what happened and how much it will cost to fix. Damage from the ruptured pipes. The first break happened tuesday at the courthouse. The next morning, a pipe 500 gallons more of the watery antifreeze mixture and shut off heat to both the jail and courthouse. Bruce, a military surplus mobile heating and power unit was wheeled into place at the courthouse wednesday afternoon. It pumped in just enough heat to keep county business going until the system now the question is what happened and who pays. It was business as usual at the linn county courthouse. Sort of. Offices stayed open and court was in session. Behind the scenes some workers depended on coats and gloves and space heaters to stay on the job. Blankets, sometimes heating pads people are sitting on and plenty of space heaters out here. We havent rescheduled cases, we havent bumped things because of the situation sot nat the portable heating unit, coupled with a warmer day, meant temperatures in the low 60s inside the courthouse. Undoing the damage of two separate pipe breaks that spilled upwards of 500 gallons of a watery antifreeze mixture will take time. One county leader estimated six to eight weeks to repair basement courtrtoms and offices where pipes leaked. Sot nat its also going to take time to pinpoint just what started the whole sequence of events. We want to make sure experts come in and examine the professional opinion supervisor houser says although the system is barely five years old any warranties would have expired. One thing the experts will look for is any defects in the manufacturin g of the pipes installed. The county is selfinsured with coverage only kicking in for property losses above 100thousand dollars. The county does have some separate coverage of boilers and equipment that might get a lower deductible. Supervisor houser doesnt expect a report on the cause of all the mess for two or three weeks. The y is working with Martin Gardner architecture to narrow down a design proposal. Planning committee imagines for the layout. It promises four middle school size gyms, family changing areas, and a larger fitness area. The new location will be off of the extension of Tower Terrace road and will serve surrounding communities. Were working hard to make this a community asset, to not just marion but a ao it will make it easy for people in hiawatha, northeast cedar rapids, as well as springville and surrounding communities to use that facility. They estimate theyll break ground for marions new ymca building in six to eight months. More Eastern Iowa School districts are seeing a benefit in replacing some diesel schoho buses with propane fueled ones. Not only is propane considered a cleaner burning fuel, but districts say the buses are better in the bitter cold. Cold weather issues with the propane has actually gone away. We have evidence of these things starting at 30 or 40 below up in northern minnesota and canada without the Cedar Rapids Community School District is buying seven of these buses for next school year. Linnmar schools rolled out four this school year. Transportation leaders say diesel fuel can gel up when the temperatures really drop. Propane doesnt have those issues. The districts are paying about 5thousand dollars extra for each propane bus. But the costsavings from the fuel and maintenance saves districts in the long run.
