With this cold weather, the American Red Cross is reminding people to be careful about using space heaters and other heating devices. Just this morning, a fire started in a central city home in the chimney of a wood burning stove. A dog alerted the family, and but the house is a total loss. Over the weekend, red cross volunteers helped 35 people throughout eastern iowa because of house fires. Heating sources didnt cause all of those fires, cause of home fire deaths. Iowa city police are arresting more people for driving under the influence. According to city data, Police Charged 621 people for operating while intoxicated in 2015. Thats the most owi arrests in ten years. On average, Iowa City Police charge 484 people with owi per year. Sewer repairs began this morning in downtown cedar rapids, reducing traffic on part of first avenue down to one lane. The work is taking place in both directions of first avenue between third and fifth streets southeast. The work will end in about a week, weather permitting. Students going to Mount Mercy University now have the e and law school in six instead of seven years. Its through a new partnership with the university of iowa. Mount Mercy University has joined several other iowa colleges in the three plus three program. It allows students to do three years of undergraduate at a participating college. Then, they apply to law school at the ui in their junior year. If accepted, their senior year doubles as their first year of law school. Two linn county organizations could be sharing a new building in the future. Linn county Public Health and Child Development services say this will help both organizations. Stay with tv9. This area of seventh street cedar rapids could soon become the home for two linn county organizations that help people of all ages stay healthy. Today the supervisors started the process of relocating Public Health and Child Development services. And the approximate 10million dollar plan is a new building that will house both. Public health is located at 501 13th street northwest. Child and Youth Development occupies part of an Old School Building next door. Supervisors say both buildings have structural issues. Kcrg tv nines Dave Franzman says supervisors believe it wont cost much more to build new. As buildings go, linn county Public Health isnt that old. It went up in 1988 with an addition put on 10 years later. And thats one source of settling left a large crack where the buildings joined and theres also problems with uneven floors. The lack of space could be the biggest drawback. We need to have a better place to work and we are grateful to the board of supervisors a study by linn county staff found there isnt enough space for the 60 people who work at Public Health now and an expansion would cost almost as much as a new building. An estimated 10million dollar project would put both Public Health and Child Development on this vacant lot together. I went into the meeting knowing it was a strong possibility but not knowing what stage we were at the county owns this Old School Building with the abbe center for Community MentalHealth Sharing half the space. Moving Child Development could help that program too. Has long looked to expand. Weve never been able to give them space. This could be an opportunity for that as well. County supervisors construct a joint facility that would be elevated above the flood plain. The plan is to look for bids in early 2017 with work wrapping up the following year.
