And his examination of luerkens in the Linn County Jail detected signs of a major depressive disorder. But prosecutors also produced a final witness who says luerkens knew what he did and knew it was wrong. Luerkens brother and sister were the final family witnesses to take the stand. Both described a man who became withdrawn and acted strangely in the final months before the stabbing. As the family witnesses more and more episodes, all talked about a Mental Health commitment. Wartburg college in waverly faces budget problems, and today wartburg president Darrel Colson met with students to answer questions about possible cuts. The college says it has a dual problem. A nearly four Million Dollar budget shortfall along with a declining enrollment. Because of that, three tenuretrack faculty members in the art, english and religion departments could lose their jobs. Colson says the cuts would simply be a result of trying to balance wartburgs budget. We now have fewer students paying tuition fees, room and board than they did say three or four or five years ago. So we just have to adjust the budget. Students also voiced concerns about eliminating positions in the liberal arts. But at least one student was surprised at how calm people were at todays meeting. I think everybody was kind of intending, they were kind of anticipating some hostility and resentment from the student body. So it was really nice to kind of see that that was not the case at all and they were really quite civil. Right now the faculty cuts are just recommendati ons. The deal is between 12 pacific nations and is aimed at freeing up commerce in 40 percent of the worlds economy. Critics have complained about the secrecy surrounding the agreement. The white house says the deal will increase us exports and protect american workers. But many worry it will be good for businesses and bad for workers. Congress must still approve the agreement. Iowa already exports nine billion dollars worth or 60 percent of its goods to nations in the tpp. The trade deal would also reduce export taxes on many iowa products. Those include pork, which would see a 388 percent reduction, and beef, which would see a 50 percent reduction. Iowa senator joni ernst was among the us senators who voted against expanding the the us rule. Ernst says the bill would have given the Environmental Protection agency and other governing agencies too much control over different bodies of water in the country. Loras college is starting to take student applications for next fall for the new Connections Academy program. Thats a four year program that keeps autistic students in college with other students. The Program Helps those students handle the academic and social sides of college life. The college said it wanted to start a program like this because theres been a growing number of children diagnosed with autism. A 2010 report by the centers for Disease Control shows that one in 68 children is autistic. And the number of children and teens with developmental diseases like autism is up 17 percent since the mid1990s. Kcrg tv nines Dubuque Bureau chief Katie Wiedemann shows how loras is one of just a few institutions that are helping educate this growing population. A college classroom. A cramped cafeteria. Places some students who have autism believed were more than they could handle. Years ago students who have autism were told they werent college material. But faculty and staff at loras say thats absolutely not true. Starting next fall, students in the Connections Academy will be assigned a peer mentor and a faculty advisor. Theyll earn two credits per semester, learning skills that helps them better understand College Etiquette and social communication. A lot of times students who have that diagnois are very knowledgeable in specific subjects and theyre very willing to share, so sometimes they dont know when to stop talking and when to stop asking questions. Students in the Connections Academy will have the option of living in a single dorm room instead of having a roommate. At the beginning of the school year, theyre allowed to move into those dorm rooms two days earlier then the rest of student body. Thats to avoid the chaos of crowded move in day. A lot of students have sensory issues, so lots of people, lots of noise. Lots of change. Its difficult. If they move in early you are going to eliminate all of that unneeded stress. Gallagher says as more and more have autism become successful students, theyll ultimately help them become successful professionals. And more and more College Professionals and more and more ceos.
