The Community Health initiative haiti has been making trips to the island nation since 2012 to offer free medical and dental care. Volunteers travel there five times a year and offer a week long clinic. The trip was already scheduled, but now theyre planning to bring extra supplies to help people impacted by the hurricane. The gr director says the area where they work didnt get hit as hard as expected. What we were hearing on the news that it was going to be rain and lots of wind, and fortunately for our area, we had more of a Tropical Storm and so we didnt have quite as much rain or wind. A fairfax man thought he may have struck it rich after getting a letter from Publishers Clearing House. Turns out, it was an almost convincing scam. Though lonnie mcwas too smart for scammers, he at first thought hed won big. A few days ago, lonnie got this in the mail. Its a letter from what looked to be Publishers Clearing House, saying he had won 600thousand dollars. With it, a very realistic looking check for more than 12thousand bucks. Any out of pocket expenses. The catch, lonnie would have to contact the group and likely write a check of his own to cover taxes and processing fees to get the winnings. This was all suspicious to lonnie. He got the check checked out by a bank. Officials said it was bogus. They looked at it. Called state farm, which the check is made out from. They said run the numbers across the bottom. They did and said it dont calculate. Up periodically. People will send in a check to release the winnings, meanwhile the fake check bounces. Officials say this is not how Publishers Clearing House works. Youve heard this before but it bears repeating, be absolutely sure who youre dealing with when sending money. Theres more to this story, tonight at 10. In the newsroom, as flood waters started to rise in vinton last week, dozens of people helped their neighbors build flood barriers. But when it was time to cleanup, many people had to go back to work or school. So a dedicated group of volunteers jumped in. But now that theres still a need for clean up in the handful of damaged homes and businesses, many volunteers are back at work or at school. The flood clean up should wrap up this weekend in vinton. This group was in chicago on another assignment when they got a call to hurry members have mucked out basements, toted approximately 20thousand sandbags and gotten the work so close to finished the arrival of a couple of outside groups saturday should wrap it all up. We would have a big job this weekend to take care of if americorps wasnt here. We do have mennonites and the methodist Disaster Team in this weekend to wrap everything up. The eight members of this americorps teams cleanout out about a dozen homes or week. That leaves only a couple of damaged homes remaining for the other volunteer groups arriving saturday. Now that the flood clean up in vinton is all but complete, the next step is repairing those homes that need more than just debris hauled away and mud removed from basements. The Benton CountyDisaster Services organizer has a list of just three homes needing repair work and now the search begins for volunteer needs the city to pick up sandbags will have to set them along the curbs outside their homes before monday morning. The sandbags can go in the public rightofway next to the street, next to the curb, or in a driveway. Collection starts at seven monday morning. Once crews go through an area of the city, they will not be making return trips. The city says it could take three weeks to collect all the sandbags.
