From the states medicaid director as iowa gets ready to switch a privatized system. Are scheduled system on march first. Thats after the federal government ordered iowa to delay the privatization by two months because it wasnt ready. Today, iowa medicaid director mikki stier addressed the 16 issues the federal centers for Medicaid Services identified. They included expanding the network of doctors and hospitals that will accept medicaid patients. Stier also said the state has stepped up comminication efforts to answer questions from patients. Some lawmakers asked about the states readiness now, but stier insisted iowa is ready. Months to sort this thing out . Mikki the state is ready, the state was ready in january, were more ready now. The state expects the centers for Medicaid Services to decide soon on whether to iowa can move forward with medicaid privatization on march first. Opponents say they have proof a planned oil pipeline through iowa wont benefit the state. Iowa is the only state not to approve plans for the Dakota Access pipeline to carry crude oil from north dakota to illinois. Pipeline opponents want the iowa utilities board to consider the fact congress lifted a ban on oil exports. They argue that bolsters arguments the pipeline wont directly benefit iowa, which is a requirement for such projects. Dakota access argues iowans will benefit from reduced reliance on imported oil. Alongside her husband, tom, she started and now oversees the courage ride, a bike ride that raises thosuands for cancer research. And it requires a whole lot of careful planning. All of the credit goes to our but jackie, has a story to tell, and a reason why she works so hard to make sure every year the courage ride returns to eastern iowa. We started the ride in 2005 to honor our son seth who passed away from sarcoma cancer in 2003 after an eight year battle. Seth was 25. Over the past ten years the courage ride has raised 300thousand dollars to help doctors learn more about sarcoma. And most of the money has gone directly to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center in iowa city. Since weve been partnering with them, they have now been able to do clinical trials, which they couldnt do when our sons was going through cancer, they now have 14 clinical trials, they have two or three specific sarcoma doctors hired. Jackie says what shes been through. Is what drives her to help others. Thats what keeps us going, its awesome to jackie says she knows seth is looking down with pride, and she has proof.
