The Democrat Controlled Senate passed two bills that would set a four percent increase to basic state aid for schools starting in the 2017 fiscal year. Those bills are separate from legislation that would al set a four percent increase for the next budget year. Last night the universitytyent out a crime alert notice about one alleged incident saturday at an east side residence hall. The second reportedly happened the next day at a west side residence hall. Both reports came fromomanonymous sources, and both victims decided not to report the incidents to police. The university did not have any federal law requires the school to send out notices like t ts one when meone reports Sexual Misconduct on campus. Kcrgtv9 Dave Franzman joins us now. Dave, the infoation the university sent out last night was v vy vague. Does Something Like that really do any good . Bruce, its certainly not going to help the public identify any possible suspects for police. But thats not really the point of the crime alerts that come out maybe 15 to 20 times a year. The purpose, aside from meeting federal requirements, is to telelthe communini something may have happened and people should take care and not be afraid to report or seek help. Campus police agree the crime alert warning about possible Sexual Assaults was vague. Theres no description and only a reference to residence halls. U of i interim safety chief dave visin says failing to issue a timely warning Like University to a 35thousand dollar federal fine. But its also part of a plan to make the community safer. It just supports why were doing education, why are we looking at policies. We spent so much time on this issue on campuses it just reinforces its a problem were trying to address trying to be transparent about visin says the crime alerts sent as timely warningnghave neneer generated a lead for police to follow up. But this program has. Sot nat a hawk alert last november about a man on campus molesting women did generate calls and an arrest. Visin says police use hawk alerts when theres an immediate threat and a location or description. The email crime alert is more to acknowledge something may have happened and remind the Campus Community where to turn for help. In my opinion, its the universitys attempt to alter what wed call rape culture and its highlighting the universitys i think its just to raise general Public Awareness this is not something thats ok. The crime alert issued monday night represents the third and fourth Sexual Misconduct reports at the university in 2016. Another bit of confusion is the crime alerts sent out also have the phrase trigger warning. The u of is Sexual Misconduct Response Office says s ats meant to alalt people who might have been Sexual Misconduct victims in the past. The concern is such information could trigger an unintended rction and just serves as a warning to those whmight have strong reactions. Bruce .
