Investigators in anaheim, california, are looking for the cause of a fire that heavily damaged two adjacent apartment buildings. The Iowa AttorneyGenerals Office says a state trooper was justified when she fired her gun following a chase with a serial shoplifter. Cedar falls police had issued an arrest warrant for 26yearold tiffany reed of missouri. They say she took part in a theft at a von maur store with two other people. Police say reed is also connected to thefts at jordan creek mall in west des moines. On october 1st, Cedar Rapids Police tried to stop reed and a chase started down i380 and onto 218. Reed pulled off at the kum and go in riverside, and drove into a sheriffs squad car. Thats when trooper jewel orear fired her gun, hitting a rear tire on reeds vehicle. Jurors got the case just before two oclock this afternoon. Luerkens is on trial for the april stabbing death of 29 year old Lynnsey Donald at the hyvee parking lot in marion. Police say the victim, an ex girlfriend, was stabbed dozens of times in front of witnesses and her own son. Kcrgtv9s Dave Franzman is live at the courthouse. Dave, what were the key points in closing arguments . Beth, linn county attorney Jerry Vander Sanden told jurors to just believe their eyes and ears. Surveillance video captured the knife attack and witnesses heard what the defendant said. But defense attorney david grinde said that evidence wasnt the whole story. The prosecution told jurors the action of the defendant couldnt be clearer. He replayed a 10 minute video of the knife attack and read portions of luerkens journal in which he made a to do list that included killing lynnsey. The defense emphasized the evidence that showed luerkens suffered from a major depressive disorder. The defense wants jurors to consider a lesser charge. Theres no hesitation, no waffling the is passed. Just vicious, just brutal he obviously suffers from a mental illness, a disease. So the jury can consider a variety of charges starting with a conviction of first degree murder. Luerkens defense lawyer did not ask for a verdict of not guilty. Rather, he suggested a conviction of 2nd degree murder due to the defendants mental issues. One thing the jury cant consider is not guilty by reason of insanity. The judge ruled the defense did not meet the burden of proof for jurors to consider that verdict. Live in cedar rapids, Dave Franzman kcrg tv9 news the state Fire Marshals Office says an explosion at a cedar falls motel last month was an attempted suicide. It happened october 10th at the Shady Rest Motel on center street. Investigators say 43year old Matthew Ferleman tried to kill himself by trying to fill his room with natural gas from an appliance. When he awoke the next morning he tried to light a cigarette and caused the explosion. Ferleman suffered burns covering much of his upper body. He later died from those injuries. The state medical Examiners Office ruled his death a suicide. The blast forced 10 people out of their homes. President obama has rejected the proposed keystone xl pipeline project. Overall, president obamas statement reflected his commitment to fight Climate Change. One company is offering its the time of year for asian lady beetles to show up, and this year theyre creating headaches for iowas wine industry. The multicolored beetles are burrowing into clusters of grapes destined for wine barrels. The beetles secrete a foulsmelling chemical when crushed, which can ruin large quantities of wine. An algona wine maker says he plans to ask the federal government for permission to dump 250 gallons of wine after the bugs were found floating in his supply. He says the batch would have been worth nearly 19thousand dollars. An iowa state professor says the beetles thrived this year because of a nearrecord soybean crop that fed them, and the absence of a hard freeze. By 2017, oregon will no longer let schools use any team names, logos, and mascots that are associated with native american tribes. But the state isnt providing any money to more than a dozen schools that will have to find new nicknames. So adidas will do it instead. Yes, at it was beautiful thing to witness. The family says fostering to adopt was a long process, but it was their way of becoming a it didnt take tom and molly coyle long to know. They stole our hearts from day one. When they were just babies the coyles began foster parenting, now two year old carlie, and 18 month on jolie are into everything, happy little girls. Its the most rewarding thing weve ever done. It can be very painful and very difficult at the time. But its so well worth it in the end. Worth it, because today, they are all officially a family. These legal adoptions proceedings happen in Dubuque County court on friday mornings. Its one of those things where we know were creating something as opposed to breaking something apart. But adoption specialists say more local families need to open their homes to both foster parenting and adoption. There are lots of kids in this area who are getting shipped out of this area which is very sad for families because of the distance.
