Saint Anthony Police officer Jeronimo Yanez fatally shot 32 year old Philando Castile during a july 6th traffic stop in a saint paul suburb. Castiles girlfriend streamed the aftermath on facebook live. She says the officer shot castile while he reached for his wallet. Castile had also told the officer he had a gun permit and was armed. Today prosecutors said the officer had no good was black. His family claims yanez racially profiled castile. The Iowa City City Council voted to allow its Police Department to temporarily overhire. The goal is to increase the diversity of the police force. Iowa city budgeted for 66 uniformed officers working the streets. One officer recently left and another will retire by the end of the year. But police can now hire four officers because three of the next four candidates on the certified list ae the city council didnt approve the over hiring, the department would have probably lost candidates. The extra cost will come from temporarily overstaffing. The city will have to find an additional 77hundred dollars a month for each officer. Thats until numbers drop from current officers leaving or retiring. Iowa city police say they were lucky to get a number of diverse applicants. If i wait eight months from now, that wont be the case just iowa city reserved four training spots at the state Law Enforcement academy for january. The extra minority officers hired will bring police close to the racial makeup of the entire community. Right now, white officers make up slightly more than 92 percent of the iowa city department. And black officers just over three percent. With the new hires, that departments makeup would change to 88 percent white officers and almost eight percent black officers. The 2010 census put at just under six percent. The Cedar Rapids Police are also hiring full time officer positions. The Department Says it wants candidates who are interested in serving the community while making a difference. Cedar rapids officers annually make more than 52 thousand a year plus benefits.
