As the wapsipinicon bends through anamosa, most of the homes are on Higher Ground the Riverside Cemetery and High School Athletic fields would be the first impacted. Down river, olin is also experiencing flooding from the wapsi today. One man tv9 spoke with mike dlask says his fishing boat is the only way in and out of his house in his neighborhood. He says his home has flooded 5 times in the past 8 years. Waters are surrounding several homes and the American Legion post. The citys park is entirely underwater. Thats something people there say theyve seen happen several times in the past few years. Its kind of normal for us now. Cedar Rapids Police say they will identify the 13yearold girl killed in a shooting on the citys southeast side. Police did take 3 people into custody. Officers responded to 8th avenue and 15th street se yesterday morning. The teen later died at uihc. Of the three pe all are males and two are juveniles. More than 50 people gathered for a vigil last night for the girl. It started with a prayer from the teens aunt. Candles lined the sidewalk spelling out her name. Neighbors told tv9 that the girls death was not intentional. One witness says she was sitting in a car when one of the suspects pointed a gun at her, and it accidentally went off. I heard a gunshot. And when i did, i went to the window, thats when i seen a couple of males, which threw me off guard because my girlfriend said it was only three girls, so i shot. Boike said investigators took the car for evidence and did recover a firearm. At this point, police have not announced any charges. Dave loebsack are on capitol hill, working together, calling for the corps to prioritize its review of the the flood mitigation project. In the past year, both blum and loebsack have sent joint letters to the corps, the House Appropriations committee and the Obama Administration approved the cedar rapids project in 2014, but the Obama Administration has not yet included the project in its budget. Its very tough for a small, urban area like cedar rapids to compete with the larger cities in the united states. So we are asking them to prioritize this project and go outside of their guidelines because this is the second flood in eight years in cedar rapids. The army corps of engineers released a statement saying limited federal resources dictate that projects be prioritized so funds are focused on the highest performing projects first. We also reached out to blums opponent this november democrat Monica Vernon for her response. In a statement, she said quote while it is devastating that we had to experience another Flood Disaster in order for the federal government to move on its promise to us. My hope is that we will finally have the resources necessary to keep our people and our city safe. As the flood waters recede, the city of cedar rapids is drawing back the county government is removing a large temporary flood barrier. Chris, it took just one day to put up a double line of hesco barriers around the Sheriffs Office. Itll take three or four times as long to knock them down and haul away the piles of sand crews began the job of dismantling the hesco barriers here early this morning. The sheriff is hoping to get some of the personnel back inside perhaps as early as tomorrow by clearing the area around the entrances first the plan is to open the Sheriffs Office to the public next monday. One county supervisors says this barrier can come down now because its not close to the river. Out cue only.
