Charges have been dropped for two men involved in a fight that injured a western iowa principal. Mills county prosecutors dropped Assault Charges against 19 yearold denvnv cook and 21yearold colton mcdaniel. Police say they were involved in a fight outside the home of richard hutchinson, the African American principal at glenwood high school. Police say a racial slur led to an attack on hutchinson and his stepson, hurl beechum. They say beechum got away, came back with a gun, and shot mcdaniel in the leg. Beechum, a former Iowa State University basketball player, is still charged in the case. He faces one count of intimidation with a dangerous weapon. His trial iset to begin next week. Mills county prosecutors say they dropped charges on the other two men because they were not responsible for starting the fight. A cedar falls man is behind bars for robbing a First National bank. 26yearold Jon Ellingson from the bank, changed his clothes, and then police took him into custody. Police were first called out at about 145 yesterday afternoon to the bank on white tail drive. Officers say ellingson did not show a weapon, and they found the stolen money. Its a very unusual event to its a very unusual event to have the magnitude of rainfall and the intensity of rainfall that we received this past december. November and december this last year were very warm. And very wet for winter. Good afternoon. This is the agribusiness report. Im david geiger. For farmers. One of the Biggest Challenges is planning for the weather. Or rather. Being able to deal with whatever weather comes your way. Which can be difficult when trying to stop nutrients from leaving a field. The department of agronomy at Iowa State University says fall application of nutrients should be done after the ground has dropped below 50 degrees. At that temperature. The biological process of converting ammonium nitrogen. To nitrates. Called nitrification. Is but this year. After soils got to that temperature. They warmed again. If nitrogen is in the soil as ammonium. Then wet conditions wont move much. If any of i. But if it gets converted. Water can take it away. But that doesnt mean applied nitrogen was lost this winter. Even though they were thawed an not frozen, the soils were cold. Denitrification would not be going on because its a biological process so compared to a summer or springtime event t en soils were warm, we would not have expected denitrification losses, but we could have had leeching losing nitrogen by water going down through the soil. Is different from runoff. When water runs on top of the soil. Does not lose much nitrogen. However. It does create erosion problems. And causes phosphorous concerns. While there isnt much landowners can do to change the weather. The department of agronomyoes have guidelines for safer times to apply nutrients. Sawyer says only earlier fall applications could have lost out on nutrients. But even then. Producers shouldnt assume their fertilizer is gone. Producers should wait and see how thihis go in the spring use some testing in the spring. Perhaps decide on how those applications are performing and not just make a quick decision to apply more nitrogen. I think wed rather see them waiting and see how the springtime goes. Fall application is an important tool to farmers. Who have limited time and resources while planting in the spring. Or have too steep of hills to apply fertilizer during the growing season. The long awaited Crop Production report from the usda is out today. Us corn and bean production are both estimated to go down. Analyst alan brugler gave me the rundown on whats going on in the grains. Particularly how the wheat market got a bump. Were getting a nice little bulsh pop h he the usda gave us a little bit to work with. And we were fairly oversold technically in some of these interday basis or on a daily chart basis. So a little Short Covering going on. Particularly in the wheat youre seeing that. The report was bearish other than the winter wheat seedings number down 7 percent from last year and 14 peent from two years ago. So thats a dramatic drop in u. S. Political polls help candidates gauge their support, and they give the public an educated guess of which way an election may go. But sometimes, polls contradict each other. Then yesterday, Quinnipiac University released a poll of likely Iowa Democratic caucus goers. It found sanders ahead of clinton. A city project is forcing two hiawatha bars to close because it wants to move an intersection. The work would be on north center point road, where robins road and emmons street meet. But the project would mean putting part of that intersection exactly where pour sports and papas sports bar sit right now. The city tried to acquire the land through an agent. Joe zoll owns both bars and refused to give up the land. So, the city was forced to domain.
