Im jason nathanson, abc news, los angeles mitral regurgitation. Its a heart condition that can cause fatigue, and shortness of breath. Our university of iowa heart and Vascular Center expert, dr. Firas zahr, is here with us today, to talk about something called mitral regurgitation. Dr. Zahr is an interventiona l cardiologist at the university of iowa heart and Vascular Center, and a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics. Lets begin with what is mitral regurgitation . How common is it . Mitral regurgitation is a condition where one of the heart valves, the mitral valve does not close tightly. When this happens, there is a backflow of blood from the left ventricle, the hearts main pumping chamber, into the left atrium. This forces the heart to work much harder to push blood through the heart and out into the body. This condition, known as mitral regurgitation causes fatigue, shortness of breath and worsening heart failure. It is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Nearly 250,000 people in the u. S are diagnosed annually with mitral valve insufficiency, and more than 50,000 of them have severe enough disease to require surgery. What are the Treatment Options for mitral valve regurgitation . There are no medications indicated to treat mitral regurgitation, so for patients with symptoms who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe mitral regurgitation, surgery is generally recommended to repair or replace the mitral valve. This typically involves openheart surgery with the patient on cadiopulmon ary bypass. Patients recovering from mitral valve surgery may take several months to regain normal physical function and activity.
