Cedar Rapids Police chief wayne jerman says hes thats a day after an accidental shooting killed a girl who was 13 years old. Today, Police Identified the girl as ireshia parks. She was shot yesterday morning in the 800 block of 15th street southeast. Police say a boy, who was also 13, was handling a gun when it went off. The shot hit parks, who later died at a hospital. Police cant name the boy because of new state law that protects the identify of juveniles, expect when they face forcible felony charges, l Involuntary Manslaughter charge, which is not a forcible felony. Hes also charged with carrying a weapon and interference with official acts. Two other teens also face interference charges. Kcrgtv9 jordee kalk joins us in the studio tonight. Jordee, whats next for this investigation . I sat down with cedar Rapids Police chief wayne jerman today. He tells me police are working to figure out exactly what happened moments before the gun, and a second gun found at the scene. 25 32, they met up. Again theyre all friends or acquaintances. We still havent been able to determine why the gun was brought out; whether it was to show. But it was out in the open police are still looking for the gun that was involved in the shooting. Police do have the other gun, which chief jerman wants to remind parents its illegal for kids under 18 to have any firearms. Jerman also says hes concerned with the growing gun violence in cedar rapids. Particularly among teenagers. 13 58 not only as a police chief but as a parent myself i cant imagine the pain and the grief parents are going through, losing a child in such a senseless and preventable way. Police in clive have released more information about a Fatal Shooting outside the 7 Flags Event Center earlier this month. They say the two men who died shot each other. They were johnny jackson, who was 29, and kevin hall, who was 45. Both were from des moines. There were about 60 people in the parking lot when the shooting happened. The 7 Flags Event Center had been hosting an allblack party, which asked people to wear all black. Work on a pumping station part protection was supposed to get underway this week. But the current flooding has delayed the start of that project for several weeks. The eastern iowa communities that flooded in the last week. So the Unitypoint Health st. Lukes hospital is reminding people to make sure they take precautions when cleaning up. 50 certainly in the last flood we saw a lot of water chemicals that was creating skin reactions. We saw a lot of rashes that we werent able to identify. So a lot of that happens to be local care, such as topicals or steroids if it looks to be a straight infection, as opposed to steroids some people will be using generators and other Power Equipment to clean up from the flooding. So Linn County Public Health wants to make sure often emits carbon monoxide. Thats an invisible and odorless gas that can be deadly. The county says people should run generators only outside and away from open doors or windows. The cedar rapids Flood Control manager says the timing of this flood is ironic. The city had planned to start work this week on a pumping station thats part of the citys permanent flood protection plan. The location is next to one of the temporary southeast. Cleanup from this flood will delay the project. It may push us back a few weeks as we have to dry out the sinclair site so they can dig and half of the project is underground. We will dig down about 15 feet to get a clay liner under the levee. The city also planned to start moving dirt next week next to the old sinclair meatpacking plant. That was to make way fo thousand foot permanent flood berm. The city says the berm will eliminate the need for some of the temporary barriers that kept most of the newbo district dry. We have an update on a story we reported last night. Today the us house passed a water resource bill, and it included an amendment calling for expedited construction of permanent flood protection in cedar rapids. The Senate Already passed its similar amendment. Iowa lawmakers want the army corps of engineers to prioritize the cedar rapids project by budgeting funds for flood protection. And tonight, Congress Passed a stop gap spending bill that will keep the federal government running through december ninth. The bill includes one point one billion dollars to fight the zika virus. One of the all time hawkeye greats randy duncan passed away today at the age of 79 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Duncan was an all american quarterback 3812 win over cal. The osage, iowa native led the big 10 in passing and was named the College Football player of the year by three organizations. Duncan was the first player selected in the 1959 nfl draft.
