Several people here in this freeport neighborhood were out here just a few hours ago going into their houses trying to recover what belongings they could, and trying to clean up. Nats darcie hurst spent much of her evening shoveling water and dirt. Out several houses in the neighborhoods basements caved in. We didnt get much sleep last night checking to make sure our basement didnt cave in firefighters evacuated the neighborhood early wednesday morning and allowed people to go back to their houses around 4 oclock. A lot of mud a lot of debris, you could see just how high the water was probably a foot and a half in their house hurst says her family was lucky. But you know what im just glad my family is still safe house is still standing, well deal with it. People living in the neighborhood say they arent sure when the water will go back down. The city is asking people not to go near the Upper Iowa River and to stay off the dike. The mayor of spillville, which is also in Winneshiek County, says this flood is worse than what the community faced back in 2008. Mayor mike klimesh says the turkey river in spillville set a record high today, beating the previous High Water Mark by a foot. Water filled the basements and got into the main level of at least eight homes alon spillville looked like it was sitting in the middle of a lake, and the city had just finished renovations there. There just wasnt enough time to put sandbags around the building. And down river in fort atkinson, people had to evacuate the riverside trailer park. The park sits on the Northern Edge of town, right near the turkey river. Water also covered the Railroad Tracks and highway 24 going into fort atkinson.
