The citys water crisis began in 2014, when the state switched the water source from lake huron to the flint river to save money. Experts said the water was highly corrosive and leached lead from the pipes. As a result, thousands of people reported feeling sick and tests showed their blood had high levels of lead. The organizations have to do the count every other year because they receive funding from the Us Department of housing and urban development. Kcrgtv nines brea love spoke with one of agencies before the head count tonight. Six people, two groups, and a list of places to go. Community housing initiatives, a transitional housing program, is one of the groups. Every other year, they search all over town to find people who need help. All while keeping a count of those in shelters and on the streets. It helps us get an understanding of whats going on in the community, and as a Housing Provider we need to know if there are Homeless People on the streets groups will spend three hours walking the streets, checking in places like this one. Which they say is a normal spot for the homeless. Spots like parking lots, car washes, parks, and certain bathrooms in the city that are open all night. If they find an unsheltered person, they will offer help with finding a bed, or offer them a sleeping bag and hand warmers. They take some of this warmer stuff along, incase the shelters happen to be full, and they cant refer them. And thats a reality in black hawk county. In the last count, agencies found only eight people unsheltered. Youre always going to find some unsheltered, unfortunately, its lucky that its that low, but it shouldnt be that high. Currently, the salvation armys mens shelter is at capacity, and the womens and childrens shelter is 85 full.
