Million dollars each year. The levy would have increased property taxes about 23 dollars a year for the owner of a home with an assessed value of 150 thousand dollars. Kcrgtv9s Sarah Mccarthy has been following the story and joins us live outside the library. Sarah, has the library made any decisions for next steps . 0 beth, not yet. Library Officials Say theyre looking at what services to cut. But wont make any concrete decisions for at least a few months. 20 45 38 were helping people at square one. But square one may soon be a little smaller. For Library Worker erin horst, a failed library levy means fewer opportunities to help people who rely on this space for research, technology access, even job hunting. In who have never used a computer some people. So they have to learn to use a mouse, they have to make an email account for themselves. They have to write a resume for the first time in their lives. Right now, the library operates on a 6 point 3 Million Dollar budget each year. That money is locked in through june of 2016 thanks to the help of 1 point 5 Million Dollars from the city. And onetime emergency funding. The levy wouldve replaced that emergency money allowing the library to maintain current services. Now, officials will look at scaling back in several areas. 20 40 22 looking, forward, thats what we know has to change. We cant keep the same hours, we cant keep the same staffing, and we cant keep the same outreach because we have to make those cuts. Again, its getting to the new normal. A normal thatll include closing both the ladd and downown Library Locations one day a week. A closure workers say many people will feel once the cuts kick in. 20 46 56 for some people, were the only interaction they have with the outside world or with other people. So having us close one day a week means theyre cut off from the outside world. Scale back operations. New financial plans need to be in place by july first. A judge has dismissed a lawsuit against governor branstad for closing two state Mental Health institutes this year. The head of the states largest Public Employees union and 20 democratic lawmakers had filed the lawsuit. They claimed that branstad didnt have authority under state law to close the Mental Health centers in Mount Pleasant and clarinda. But a judge ruled that the governor can turn down Financial Support for the centers. Branstad said the facilities were not suited for modern Mental Health care. A former university of iowa athletic official has filed a gender and sexual lawsuit against the school. Former Senior Associate Athletic director jane meyer says Athletic Director gary barta attempted to derail her career by demoting her last year. Attorneys say the school reassigned her after she. Complained about the firing of the field hockey coach who is also her longtime partner, tracey griesbaum. The university fired her after players accused her of verbal abuse and pressure to play while injured. Its tough to remember all the president ial candidates this year. Two republicans and two democrats have already dropped out, leaving at least 18 major candidates still in the race. But thats really just a small, small fraction of the number of people whove filed with the federal Election Commission as 2016 president ial candidates. Its a long list with more than 13 hundred names. Some are a little funny. Like buddy the cat, and very odd dog, and even the iowa teenager who filed as deez nuts. But most are serious. The list contains plenty of republicans and democrats, but the vast majority are independents or third parties coming from every direction of the political spectrum. One of them, representing the constitution party, lives right here in eastern iowa. Theres a lot of candidates out there , left, right, republican, democrat, all sorts of parties, but they dont seem to be talking about the constitution. And thats whats most important. Its not left or right. Its what our soldiers took an oath to. Witter knows he has no chance of becoming president. But his candidacy does have a purpose. Id like to at least start a conversation about the constitution and how far weve strayed from it. Third Party Candidates have a huge disadvantage when it comes to mounting their campaigns. They just dont see crowds like this. But they can still make a difference. That are often coopted by the major parties. And holly harris from the Iowa Green Party agrees. I think a lot of people see the third party vehicle, even if its not a hundred per cent successful at the top ticket, as a way of exerting pressure and influence. And in fact throughout history that is what has happened. The two party system is entrenched in american politics. But what those parties offer doesnt always satisfy a lot of voters. Youve got two parties that offer a wide range of ideological positions. However, within those parties its become increasingly difficult to gain support for all voices. So instead of candidates a or b from the major parties, many voters might prefer candidate c from a third party. But they just dont want to waste their votes. Voters are being strategic in who theyre voting for rather than being sincere. They may really have a strong preference for c, for candidate c, but they say that persons not going to win, so lets ditch c for the moment and pick someone thats viable. Through the years, no matter who a third Party President ial candidate has been, a big hurdle has always been funding. Most donors, like voters, dont want to support someone who has no chance of winning. And another obstacle can be just getting onto the ballot. Ballot access in many, many states is prohibitive. And, in fact, its deliberately so. There have been many steps along the way that have been intended to exclude third parties and those voices. So, if running for the white house is such a difficult process, why do so many people decide to do it . This is an opportunity for me to do something that might be enjoyable. Heck, theyre not going to win, but its not about winning. Its about the value that they get from running and being part of the process, which can be very exciting. Wont win, the basic reason most of these people file as president ial ideology. Basic beliefs that differ from and democratic platforms. There was an old saying that if you find yourself off the beaten path and youre kinda lost, go back to the path you were on. Our Founding Fathers were there. They put us in the right direction, and we need to get back on that path. By the way, no Third Party Candidate has ever won a president ial election. The republicans were a third party in 1856, but by the time Abraham Lincoln won as a republican in 1860, the republicans and democrats were essentially the two top parties. And he will also have regional volleyball championship highlights from classes onea and saturday in bloomington against the top offense in the big 10. Heres more with coach ferentz. Michigan state linebacker said indianas offense was better than oregons. He it was simple but it was so fast paced and they had so much team speed. Have you seen that on film. I agree with that to your point coach wilson has always been an up tempo guy and they do it very well. Quarterback knows how to make players at every position. The offensive line doesnt a great job qb and rb are very good players they are a big threat. Is this the best tackling team you have had since you have been here . It would rank right up thier that to me is where defense all starts if you tackle you are going to have a hard time eliminating big plays and just playing good defense they have really done a great job playing team defense and this going to be a real test for us. You beleive the big 10 in turnover margin is that something you can teach and coach . We teach it every year but it really gets down to the players i think the better you play as unit just creates a few more opportunities and the more film study you do desmond king is a great example all of suden he than he did a year ago. He is really the same guy it is just his experience and him making it work for him. The publicity for iowa has been crazy. Facebook every where you go their is videos you have herky chasing Kirk Herbstreit on national tv that can only be good for iowa right . I guess i am only laughing because i dont know how to get to facebook. I can spell it. When you are winning that helps. Our guys are playing well and our guys play hard and that is hard not to appreciate that. I can tell you as a coach i am really enjoying it. It is a great group of guys and hopefully we can finish strong looking forward to the challenges. Lets play some volleyball. A trip to state was on the line tonight in class 1a and 2a. 5th ranked springville in the far court played Bellevue Marquette in a 1a regional championship. The orioles can throw mean stuff at you. How about the kill by kortney kirby. But Bellevue Marquette had an answer this time. Hallie corum and Alyssa Jaeger combine for the block. The mohawks at one time led it 133. But springville scored the last five points. Chrissy hoogland places it perfectly. They rally for the 2523 win. Game two Megan Wagaman takes care of business. The orioles win it three games to two. Class 2a wapsie valley and north cedar faced off in center point. And Madison Hawtrey finds the open spot for the knights. And that had the surfing crowd on their feet. Checkout the hopps from wapsies kierra saulsberry for the kill. And the black and gold going was going bonkers. North cedar responds at the net with the double block this time. And the beach boys didnt have an jump out of the gym and wapsie valley is headed to state with the 30 sweep. More bad news for former linnmar mister basketball marcus paige. He fractured a finger in his nonshooting hand in practice yesterday and will be out 34 weeks. And that means he will most likely miss his homecoming game at uni november 21st.
