The library is facing budget cuts after a 27cent tax levy failed in november. It will have to cut back on hours,ervices and materials as soon as march. The library held a Community Conversation meeting last night to hear opinions on which library hem. Library director dara schmidt says its imporornt to have input on these tough decisions. Officer William Porter testified that he knew freddie gray from his patrols of the west baltimore neighborhood. He said, quote, freddie gray and i werent friends, t we had a mutual respect. When one of porters lawyers asked if he wau sorry porter responded, absolutely. Gray died in april, a week after officers put him in the back of a police van shackling him but not putting him in a seat belt. During the ride, somehow, gray suffered a broken neck. The van made six stops during his 45minute ride to the police station. Prosecutors allege porter should have caaled for a medic after the fourth stop, when gray asked for help. Porter testified that he didnt realize gray needed immediate medical assistance until the last stop. With one of his attorneys at times demonstratin g grays position, porter testified that people transported in wagons were never secured with seat belts certainly not the people he put in wagons roughly 150, he says, since joining the Baltimore Police department in 2010. On wednesday, porter told the jury, quote, it is the responsibility of the wagon driver to get the prisoner from point a to point b. They also say farook might have plotted an attack with the man accused of providing him assault rifles used in the shooting. This happened around 5 00 yesterday afternoon. Waterloo Police Responded to a 2vehicle crash at the corner of franklin street and east 8th street, just east of downtown and near the old Expo High School buiuiing. It appears a pickup truck rearended the school van in the intersection. Police tell a tv9 crew at the scene that ambulances took 6 people to the hospital. Investigators say several of those injured were students. They didnt say how many were students or how badly they were hurt. Also in waterloo, fire crews are investigating a house fire as suspicious. Firefighters respondededo a home at 71 mulberry street around 8 45 last night near mulberry and mullan avenue. No one was injured. The Fire Department says people inside the home had put out most of f the flames by the time fire crews arrived. Prosecutors have filed new charges against a man who they say tried to kill a woman in elkader last month. 24yearold brbrdon thoma now faces first degree burglary and Second Degree theft charges. Thats in addition to the original attempt murder char. Police say thoma broke into a home last month after the womans husband left for work. They say he then repeatedly punched and kicked her. Police dont think it was a random attack. This morning, a cedar rapids man waiting sentencing after a jury found him guilty of Second Degree murder. 47yearold edward cusic beat his mother to death with a ow bar three years ago. It happened at her home on old marion road ne. He faces up to 50 years in prison. Police say he admitted beating his 68 year old mother at the time, but he claimed it was selfdefense. He was on trial for first degree urder, but the jury found him guilty on the lesser charge. Members of a Charitable Organization in iowa city some rigging from outside their buiing. Members of the fraternal order ofofagles noticed that a us flag and a fraternal order of eagles flag were missing tuesday night. The groups building is on highway 1, a block from riverside drive. Iowa city police sayay they have not heard any report from the eagles about the missing flags. New cameras installed in the Jones County Sheriffs Office prisoner transport van are helping deputies keep an eye on offenders. This v v is similar to what t police in baltltore, maryland, used when they arrested freddie gray last april. Gray died from a spinal injury while in Police Custody, and his death set off nationwide protests. Six Baltimore Police officers face charges, and one is already on trial. In addition to keeping prisoners safe, jones county sheriff greg graver says the sysm alal covers his office e om a legal standpoint. He says the freddie gray case exposed potential liabilities in how they transported prisoners. Theres a camera inside each of the 3 pods and one computer screen. It records in high definition, it records all the cameras at the same time, so you dont have to worry about the user forgetting to turn on a camera sheriff graver says the entire camera system cost the county around 15thousand dollars. The coralville ecumenical food pantry will soon have a new and much larget home. Its a space workers say theyve needed for years, but couldnt find an affordable solution. Kcrgtv9s Sarah Mccarthy shows us the new spot that should fix this growing need. This is the former coralvivie post office ittjust a short drive away from where the food pantry sits now. You can see theres a lot of open space here, but it wont be empty long. Over here is where workers will put food and shelving. And if you look this way, this is where theyll being installing offices as ely as friday. At the pantrys current location, shelf space is tight. The group takes in about a thousand pounds of food each month from Community Members that feeds 24hundred people every year. And the organizations executive director says that need is growing. Food storage has been a really big obstacle for us. To store food and at times weve had to turn donations away just because we dont have space for them. Because the city of coralville owns this property, this is all happening because the Council Unanimously approved the move. Coralville mayor john lundell says its a good use for ace that would otherwise sit empty. Im really pleased itll be occupied again and there will be more activity around here and the food pantry will dress it up a little bit. Itll be great to have a tenant in here. The group is upset with how the board chose Bruce Harreld as the new university of iowa president. It says the board desisied the searchch specifically to prevent any faculty opinions in the selection of the final candidate. The report also states that the regents chose harreld as president above three other more qualified candndates. D the board acted in bad faith toward the administrators of from other universities, were candidates in an open, honest search when the process in actuality was being manipulated to reach a foreordained result. The aaup presented its findings to the board and to Bruce Harreld. The board responded saying it believes it quote ran a fair and transparent search process. But couldnt provide any other comment due to pending litigation. When harreld saw the report, he said he will continue to respect and engage in the shared ggernance of this inststution, as i pledged to do before assuming my duties.
