He asked governor branstad and other state officials for more than five Million Dollars in additional funds for the upcoming fiscal year. He told them the money would keep the university competitive. Iowa state requested an extra 8. 2 Million Dollars for hiring more faculty. And uni asked for more than 7. 6 million in additional funding. The state regents plan to vote on renaming a building on the university of iowa campus today. But they wont release details until they meet later today. Some are concerned that the move violates the states open meetings law. But a regents Spokesman Says the board is complying with the law by giving notice of the its not releasing any other details. In the past, the regents have typically renamed buildings to recognize donors. As we mentioned, the board of regents is meeting today. They will also be talking about possible tuition increases for students at the three public universities. Tuition has already been increased for the upcoming Spring Semester at uni and iowa state. A state budget impasse in illinois means job cuts and a reduction of service for a dubuque based Sexual Assault prevention agency. The Riverview Center gets funding from both iowa and illinois. Staff members say two people in dubuque lost their jobs because of the cuts the Development Director and the project coordinator. Both of those positions were bistate funded. Riverview Center Executive director Carrie Melton says, in the illinois offices they will be laying off 85 percent of their Sexual Assault program staff. She says the center will now be unable to protect and assist those people. Also in her statement, melton said in illinois, victims of Domestic Violence will have no choice but to remain in a violent home which will force their children to live in that environment. She also says the loss of services will be a burden on police, prosecutors and schools. Tens of thousands of iowans who rely on medicaid are on deadline to choose a new provider, as the state privatizes the health care program. We received many calls into the newsroom about signing up for medicaid in the past few days. Patients got letters in the mail asking them to pick from four companies by the middle of the month. But some say they dont know whether their current doctors and hospitals have contracts with any of the four companies. Medical officials at physicians clinics of iowa say the only thing a patient can do is call their provider and ask which direction they are leaning toward. Certainly there will be iowa available for those patients, the question then becomes which of those plans did they sign up for. Thats puts most of the responsibility on the state at this point in time because things havent been finalized to provide those members, our patients, with some direction on what they should do. Dalton says some providers could opt out of full participation, but pci will participate in one of the plans. A northeast iowa woman is sharing her experiences living with hiv. This event at uni yesterday was part of world aids day. Each december first, people to come together in the fight against hiv. Tami haught says she was diagnosed with hiv in 1993, shortly after doctors diagnosed her husband with aids. Her husband died in 1996, and now shes sharing her story with the hope of educating people. In waterloo, city councilman quentin hart received nearly 60 percent support in the runoff. He got more than 52 hundred votes to beat former mayor tim hurley, who had more than 36 hundred votes. Hart will replace mayor buck clark, who did not seek a fourth term. Waterloo voters also filled the City Council Seat in ward four. Jerome amos junior is the winner with nearly 900 votes. Chris schwartz had around 600 votes. Amos will replace quentin hart, who won yesterdays runoff for waterloo mayor. And in cedar falls, businessman jim brown received overwhelming support for mayor. He got about 75 percent support, with about 35 hundred votes. While incumbent jon crews received 143 votes. And David Halterman had about mayor crews had urged people to vote for brown in yesterdays runoff. He decided to step down from the position at the end of the year. But his name was still on the runoff ballot. Mayor crews has served cedar falls for 30 of the last 44 years. Police in des moines have a suspect in custody this morning for a double homicide. And thats after a standoff with authorities late last night on a highway. Dallas county authorities closed down several miles of highway 141 last night when they found a car matching the description of the murder suspects minivan. Michael wanchanic was parked at a gas station when officers recognized the car and tried to bring him into custody. Leading to a chase that ended when the van died on the highway. You know i think the cold finally got to him the reason he ended it. He finally came out. Um he didnt have any heat in his vehicle, i think thats why he finally decided to get out of police say wanchanic is the suspect in a double homicide in des moines on monday. Authorities found 26 year old byron howard and 31 year old heath belieu shot to death in their home monday night. Some people in dubuque have damage to their homes this morning after late night gunfire. Police responded to spruce street between university and jefferson around 10 30 last nigig. They found shell casings and some homes had broken windows. The Police Department is still investigating. Cedar Rapids Police are investigating a shooting that sent one person to the hospital. Police say they received reports of gunshots around eight oclock last night near the 16hundred block of b avenue northeast. They did not find a victim there, but they did find a vehicle with bullet holes nearby. Police say a man later arrived at Saint Lukes Hospital for treatment. He is expected to be ok. In a tv9 followup this morning. Authorities have released the name of the inmate who was at the center of a smuggling investigation at the anamosa state penitentiary. They say Wesley Ziegler worked with a correctional officer to smuggle in cell phones in exchange for money. Hes now serving a sentence for robbery and kidnapping in kansas. But he had been serving time in anamosa under a transfer agreement. Authorities punished d egler with confinement and transferred him back to kansas after they discovered a cell phone. Former correctional officer Garrett Barton and three others have pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the investigation. Five other prisis employees have lost Transamerica Corporation says its reorganizing, but have not said how that will impact jobs there. Transamerica is an insurance and Investment Company that does most of its business in the us. The company told employees yesterday that as part of its 2020 strategy, it is combining 14 different didisions into one company. It will now be organized by function rather than products. Transamericas Senior Vice President released a statement on the re organization. The statement says in part transamerica is making internal changes to better deliver on a singular, consistent and. For the past five years officials have discussed raising dubuque street and the park road bridge. Twice in the past three years, dubuque street has flooded between foster road and park road. Both times the road was closed for nearly a month. Officials hope to prevent future flooding events by raising the road one foot above the 100 year flfld plain. Officials originally wanted to break ground in spring 2014. Some of the from residents and enviroental studies showing concern. But now city council is expected to approve the plan in a couple weeks. The new design takes the roadway just above the 100 year flood plain. That should save some old ttes along dubuque street. The project is now expected to cost 52 Million Dollars, up from the original estimate of 32 million. The bridge itself has taken a little bit different shape than what the original concept was, so we have a little bimore money in the bridge, we also, as the delay in the project, originally we were going to be under construction two years ago, so obviously inflation raised the price of the project also. They will break ground in may and it will take two years to complete. Cedar rapids is looking a little more festive this morning. Laststight, people helped welcome the holidays with the lighting of the first of five trees for the season. The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance held medquarter district by mercy medidil center. Tree lightings are also scheduled this week in the kingston village, newbo, downtown and the czech village. This is the first year the Economic Alliance will light five trees.
