You see in high school theres an issue with acceptance a lot of times and so its really pushed me to change that view of people. Being a friend to the kids, whos a good role model is theyre not always the best friendships. Developing strong friendships is the idea behind the best buddies program. It pairs a west student with another student who has a disability. Kailin got involved her freshman year. Playing cards this year, shes president of the west chapter and still works with her buddy whos also a good friend. Seeing the interactions and seeing the kids grow that way is just phenomenal. At the end of her school day, which, also includes College Courses at kirkwood and ap classes, kailin provides respite care for a family with a 9 year old boy with autism picking him up from school, taking him to appointments and working with him at home. We have goals that we work on. So saying his parents names, working on his address, using skills. Back to card game she may not be numero uno at cards, but shes number one to these kids, who count on her friendship and support. Accepting peoples differences is something that really drives me to do what i do. These kids provide i think probably kailin and i with more than we could ever provide them. Police are talking to a man in connection with a womans death in Benton County after they say he stole two trucks and crashed them. And now state authorities have identified the womans body found outside his home. Law enforcement found 25yearold sabrina hustads body sunday afternoon in a driveway. That was in the 32hundred block of 59th street trail, near shellsburg. Authorities say thats the home of 31yearold david miller. Thats who police say they are investigating in connection with the homicide. Right now, he faces vehicle theft and parole violation charges. Authorities believe miller stole a truck from a neighbor early sunday morning and wrecked it a couple of miles away. They say miller then stole another truck and crashed that one, too. The owner of the first stolen truck says he couldnt stop miller. He says, in hindsight, that was probably a good thing. Now that i know what hes capable of he probably wouldnt have gotten out and ran he probably would have fought for that ride out of here. Later in the day, the Linn County Sheriffs Office received reports of a man with a head injury walking along a road. The man who was identified as miller went to the hospital, where authorities interviewed him and later arrested him. A suspected shooter is dead this morning in the quad cities after police say he killed himself. Authorities responded to two reports of gunshots yesterday. Davenport police say the first incident was at a law firm, which is in the same building as a military recruiting center. Police say the man fired several shots, but no one was hurt. They say the recruiting center was not the target. Shortly afterward, Bettendorf Police responded to a man with a gun, standing outside a business. When officers arrived, the man shot and killed himself. With fewer than 100 days till doctor ben carson is leading the other republican president ial candidates here in iowa. Carson with 30 percent support among likely gop caucus goers. Thats 12 points ahead of donald trump. The only other candidate in double digits is marco rubio at 10 percent the poll also shows nearly four out of five people opinion of carson. More than half have a favorable opinion of rubio. Fewer than one quarter have a favorable opinion of trump. Governor Terry Branstad is creating a special division in iowas Public Defenders Office that will focus on wrongful convictions. People who live here say they have to walk a half mile to get to the bus stop. Officials say they hope to have at least a portion of the road reopened by the end of the weekend. Then open the entire roadway by thanksgiving. This is a significant part of coralville because officials want it to become a more popular area. All of the utilities went underground, all the water mains have been replaced, all the cables been replaced, all the power has been replaced, everything has been redone, which will benefit all the residents of coralville, not just along 5th street, but in other areas as well. City officials said theyll look to recoop some money for this project from contractors. They havent worked out those details yet. Unity point is expanding its urgent care and Family Medicine clinics in marion. It plans to add six thousand square feet of space from the existing lebeda Mattress Factory at 2992 seventh avenue. There will be separate entrances and waiting areas for urgent care and Family Medicine. Unity point says a growth in the number of patients led to the expansion.
