Back to you. Thanks a lot forrest. On the republican side. New polling shows marco rubio is Still Holding onto third place and has been for some time here in iowa. Commanding senator ted cruz is got a boost on saturday with an from the Des Moines Register. I sat down with rubio on sunday some of the subjects that came up. Immigration and the republican brand. From the opening moments of sundays 12 minute interview with florida senator marco rubio, he stressed multiple times that he is the republican who could defeat former secretary of state Hillary Clinton in a general election. Ill beat Hillary Clinton. Yet can senator rubio find a path to get past donald trump or texas senator ted cruz, who have been 1st or 2nd in polling of Iowa Republicans for months. Rubio has been a strong third, usually at 12 or 13 . I give the Republican Party the best chance to unify this party after the nomination fight is over. We will unify the Republican Party and we will create new conservatives. We are going to campaign to people that have not heard from the Republican Party in a long time. Border security has become a critical issue for this election cycle. The senator talked about a firm stance on who gets into the u. S. And who does not. The first thing i would say is now, immigration, the number 1 issue, first and foremost, is know who you are or why youre coming, youre not getting into the united states. Number 2 is we have to secure our borders. This is not an easy found position as ive been pushing for this for most of my time in the senate. The hiring of 20,000 new border agents. Completing the 700 miles of walls and fencing. An entry exit tracking system to prevent visa overstays also, something rare. A republican attacking Vermont Democrat Bernie Sanders as its been secretary clinton who has been a rallying point at Many Republican candidate rallies. The people who are out of touch here are people like Bernie Sanders, who is an avowed democrat socialist. He doesnt hide that. I think he should run for president of sweden or some other country with economies he seems to enjoy. We want to be america. It is the Democratic Party that has gone way off the scale, far to the left, espousing openly socialist policies that are, perhaps appropriate for europe. They dont work here. We dont want them here. Chief mark carlson reports on the 24hour Crisis Line Program in Johnson County, in this weeks show you care spotlight. Ringing nats inside the Johnson County theres a small room where inside volunteers make a big difference. We let them identify what their own crisis is, so we dont put a definition of what a crisis is or isnt, usually theyre in dealing with depression or anxiety, maybe theyre dealing with financial distress, thats been a big thing lately. In addition to staff about 100 volunteers help make up the crisis line team. The clock. Because a crisis knows no time. Were always aware that were as a team just working to help people in our area, but also other places, we get calls from not just iowa but all over the country. The calls can get very serious. About 10 percent involve talk of suicide. And the center takes dozens of call each day and roughly 8thousand per year. Something that i definitely came into this job feeling is that were all the same we all have the same needs, we need the same sort of support, but then this position confirmed that for me, it just seemed like people need others and that even at the worst times sometimes all you need is officials at the Crisis Center are now working to make the program even bigger. They hope to add another 25 to 50 volunteers so that even more people can work the phones. Theyre a tremendous part of our program, last time i counted they do the work of about 810 fulltime employees for us, so we couldnt run the agency without them. And without them this community and far beyond would likely be a different place. Because there are many people who just need an ear. In iowa city, mark carlson, kcrg tv nine news.
