Coralvilles big debt and what to do about it will be a big topic at Tonights City Council meeting. On december 9th, Moodys Investors Service downgraded the citys bond rating. Tts generally seen ap a negative reflection of the cityty financnc and can make it harder for coralville to borrow money. The bond rating dropped to the lowest rating of Investment Grade on moodys scale. The company rated coralville this way becauau of its high debtbtnd liabilities. Liabilities include things like ownership of a hotel and performance center. Coralville has about 267million dollars in debt. In iowa, ly cedar raraids and des moines both much larger cities have more debt. Coralville city Officials Say the rating will have little impact on residents. They say they expect to see the city continue to grow. While taxes do help pay off this debt, those property taxes will not increase. No, theyre not, and we have. And we have never missed a debt payment, we continue to make those payments, and we dont have any plan to do differently. The city is moving forward with a 7thousand seat arena project in the iowa river landing. The city says that project will open debtfree, if it gets to that point. Cedar rapids and Linn County Public Health might have to give back some federal grant money. Its part of a program to remove lead paint from older homes. If homeowners dont use the money, it will go back to the federer government. Rgtv9s Forrest Saunders join us live in the newsroom this morning. Forrest, this grant is meant to make homes safer . Thats right. In august 2013, the two groups received two point two millilin dollars to address leadbased paint hazards in older homes in cedar rapids. Theyve handled the problem in that time, but theres enough money left for other 125 homes. Pepele have to qualify financially and have children either living in the home or visiting often. And the grant money would pay for contractors to fix the problem. Children with lead paint exposure can suffer Serious Health problems, like learning disabilities or impaired hearing. 13 56 04 we want to take care of all the people we can. We have a goal of 125 units to complete and we really want to get the word out to people that the money is available. And its a short amount of time left before the program time runs out. He signed an executive order yesterday that requires state security agencies to develop a plan by july first on how to respond to a possible cyber attack. The council talked about it at yesterdays meeting, but commission isnt asking the city to change a law or ordinance. It says it just wants a discussion. The Commission Says it can be next to impossible for a convicted felon to find a job after prison.
