In a tv9 followup this morning. Iowa city firefighters say they had quite the battle with Mother Nature when trying to put out a house fire. They faced some intense conditions during a thunderstorm while battling a house fire at 623 east college street. At one point, lightning in the area forced them to take cover. The fire tuesday night sent one firefighter to the hospital for evaluation. The Fire Department says while they were there, dozens of calls poured in about other lightning related incidents. We had multiple calls at one time, and like going to the emergency room, we triage calls, so those that are most important first, those are the ones we go to first. The house that burned tuesday night was the home of well known artist hans breder. His wife told us there was a lot of valuable art inside. The Fire Department says it does not have an estimate yet on the damage. Many university of iowa students and faculty wont give up fighting the board of regents decision on the new university president. A group protested at the meeting yesterday. Last month, the regents chose Bruce Harreld, passing over three other finalists who have more experience in education. Since then, several student and faculty groups have condemned the regents decision. There were a couple hundred people outside the imu yesterday afternoon, holding up signs and chanting. Transparency was a common sticking point, as they say the regents search for a new ui president had none. The group iowans defending our universities accuse the regents of conducting an illegitimate search that produced an illegitimate ui president. Michael kumpf, a retired classics professor from Valparaiso University living in coralville, says the board and harreld need to resign. The board of regents as i understand it conducted a search that was not open or fair, the other candidates did not have a chance. Protestors went inside the imu to the regents meeting, holding their signs high. Incoming president Bruce Harreld starts the first week of november. In todays agribusiness report, the state climatologist explains how this recent round of weather is affecting this falls harvest. But right now, heres a look at todays opening farm markets. Good morning its. Agribusiness report. Im david geiger. Last week was warm. Dry. And windy. And farmers got a quarter of the states corn crop out of the ground in the six point nine days suitable for fieldwork. Which the iowa crop report says is the most this season. That report now only looks at two measures of progress. How much corn and beans are harvested. Half the corn crop is now harvested. 52 percent. Two weeks ahead of last year. Moisture content for all corn is at 17 percent. Though ive heard reports of farmers having too low moisture content. Near 13 percent. The soybean harvest is 83 percent done. Ten days ahead of last year. Nearly nowhere in the state had rain in october until just this week. Which was a complete turnaround from septembers variable rainfall. Which gave perfect conditions to dry the crops in the fields. Temperatures were also above normal as well. Even though most of the state has now had its first freeze. The further northeast you go, the colder things were. Some places even down to upper teens earlier in the week. And so growing season definitely over with. Might help make the soybeans a little easier to harvest in places where they still had green stems and things like that. But the southwest part of the state more hit and miss. Hillaker says the dry weather and frost poses a challenge to farmers who are getting cover crops in the ground. A farmer told me this last week that his month old cover crop wasnt growing much. The rain this week could jump start the germination. But it will be harder for some of those conservation practices to get a stand. As it gets colder. The grain markets are moving along with harvest way ahead of schedule over the five year average. Nationally. Soybeans are 50 percent ahead of last year. Weve had incredible weather here in the midwest part of the united states, and at this point were at about 75 degrees in the chicago land area, which is amazing. Its pushing Natural Gas Prices lower. Were going to do almost 3. 9 billion in soybeans so another outstanding crop we did four billion last year so back to back record crops. Were going to do 100 Million Metric Tons in brazil, so its not like were short soybeans but things just seem to have bottomed out. Im not recommending any type of short position in the agricultural markets or the grain markets, but im sitting on the sidelines. About a 1314 percent rally in the last few weeks. Remarkable. Im definitely telling and advising producers to start taking advantage of this. But as a speculator sitting on the sidelines wait for better chart structure to develop. But as a producer, you have to start lowering some of your monetary risk. This is a heck of a rally. Hogs were one of the strongest markets while Everything Else was selling off. They continue to move higher. Were right near recent highs, the highs from like six months ago are around the 70 level so were just an eyelash away. Again if youre a producer i would definitely take advantage of this, i dont think hog prices are going to stay this high for long. Iowa monarch butterflies have been struggling. With few places to live. But the Iowa Department of agriculture announced yesterday. It got nearly a quarter of a Million Dollars as grant money to establish monarch habitat. It comes from the National Fish and wildlife foundation. And goes to work three thousand three Hundred Acres of privately owned land into monarch habitat. But when long qt syndrome shows up in young athletes, theyre automatically benched. Now, Cleveland Clinic researchers believe theyve found a way to get these kids back into the game. Martie salt reports that can happen with some precautions. Tyler lajko has a heart condition called long qt syndrome which, if triggered by a lot of exertion or even surprise, can be dangerous or worse. So hes just playing golf when hed rather be involved in team sports. In patients with long qt syndrome, the heart takes longer than normal to relax. The issue with that is while its relaxing, taking a long time to relax, that can lead to arrhythmias, which can be life threatening. But doctor azizs Research Team has tyler back on the basketball court. They studied more than 100 kids with long qt syndrome who played more aggressive sports. Took beta blockers. Pla yed with coaches and parents aware of their condition and they made sure there was always an aed nearby. There hasnt been one heart incident during sports over the seven years. Just being able to shoot around, you know, knocking down that three was good. It felt good. Doctor aziz says letting them play is not without risk, but its a calculated one. Were trying to figure out a way to balance both, keep them safe but at the same time, keep them participating, keep them feeling normal. Tyler is careful. Police say they stopped a vehicle near 32hundred ravenwood terrace northwest around 1030 tuesday night. 21 yearold Jonathan Gossman and two other people were inside. Police believe the three were involved in narcotics related activity at a nearby drug store. Police say gossman tried to run away. Two officers, including a police dog, started chasing him. Thats when police say gossman pulled out a gun and fired at the officers, who fired back, killing him. Police are questioning the two other people who were inside the vehicle. The two officers involved were not hurt. 3 14 30 my main concern is for the welfare of the Police Officers that go out every day and every night and these are the situations that they end up to be a huge concern of mine. The officers are on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in officerinvolved shootings. The Iowa Department of corrections is phasing out a program that connects perpetrators of crimes with victims. Right now, state prisons use a program called victim impact listen and learn to help offenders empathize with victims. Its meant to lower the number of criminals breaking the law again. One cedar rapids man served more than seven years at the anamosa state penitentiary for Second Degree robbery. He says the program was a turning point in his life and hopes officials will reconsider the change. 14 30 10 hopefully theres another young man or woman that can take advantage of the program, learn from it, and better themselves, put themselves in the situation that im in now. Youre at work and you get a text, an email or call about something that has been going on at the school and i think there has been a lot of anxiety for parents here. The Marion Police chief and the us attorney for iowas Northern District visited Marion High School during their lunch hour yesterday. They talked with them about a pledge where students say they wont bring guns to school or use guns to settle personal disputes. So you have to admire when a young lady chases her dream to play the game she loves. Josh christensen has the story. Springvilles jade hard was a volleyball player growing up. But last year when she was in 8th grade, she tried out for football. And since then, shes developed a passion for the game. Ive thought about going back to volleyball, but thats just like walking into a new school and not knowing anything. So, sticking with football, its tough at times but usually im able to pull through with all the guys supporting me. Footballs just my life. Jade plays offensive line and defensive end on the Junior Varsity team. She says some opposing players are shocked when they see her on the field. But jade doesnt want her playing football to be about gender and she doesnt want other teams to take it easy on her. People think its crazy that real nights game, i hit this kid that was coming out of nowhere. And you can hear our helmets crack. You can hear my dad on the sideline, hes so proud of me. It feels so good to hit someone. She is one of the players, and thats how we approach it every day in practice and in games. Its not because of who she is, but its more because of the player she is. Even though jade sees limited time at the varsity level, shes cherished every moment. I feel wonderful when i get to play on varsity. My longterm goal is to be on varsity by my sophomore year.
