California, where a chill inging report is emerging. And it turns out they had a stunning arsenal left over as they were shot dead in a gun battle with police. The suv riddled with bullet holes. One neighbor capturing the sound. Yeah. Authorities say the young wife was firing out the back window in those time moments. The husband, syed farook was born here, a u. S. Citizen. His wife, originally from pakistan, on a fiances visa. Leaving their 6monthold baby with family. This image of their marriage license. Authorities say they has thousands of rounds of ammunition. Remote controlled bombs, enough for another attack. And the fbi today searching their home in redlands, california, looking under the hood of the car, searching computers, cell phones to learn if they had any help, any support. There are major new clues tonight, and we begin with abcs chief investigative correspondent brian ross. Reporter the fbi tonight is now treating the investigation of syed farook and his tashfeen malik, as a case of terrorism. Behind the doors of the young couples San Bernadino home, police say they found an arsenal of weapons that could have been used to kill thousands of people. Clearly they were equipped and they could have continued to do another attack. Reporter in the garage, a virtual bomb factory with 12 unexploded bombs, described as similar in make to this one featured in an al qaeda publication. And more than 6,100 unspent rounds or bullets found at the home, and in the getaway car, along with two highpowered assault rifles and two handguns. All purchased legally and quietly stockpiled by farook, prior to the deadly assault on a Holiday Party for his fellow workers from the county Health Department. Nobody just gets upset at a party, goes home and puts together that kind of elaborate scheme or plan. To come back and do that. There was some planning that went into this. Reporter by outward appearances, farook, born in chicago, lived a quiet life in angeles. On muslim dating sites, he described himself as devout and looking for love, seeking a wife who would wear a hijab. He called himself a liberal, interested in snowboarding, working on cars and taking target practice in the back yard. His wife is a mystery to authorities tonight, and its not clear how they met. We dont know enough. We do not know enough. Reporter she came to the u. S. With him in 2014 from saudi arabia, on whats known as a fiance visa, and according to this marriage certificate, they married in riverside, california, in august of that year. When their daughter was born just six months ago, they registered for baby gifts, asking for pampers and an infant car seat. Yet, on wednesday, they left all that behind, as farook took the wheel of the suv, rented just a few days earlier, and his wife sat in the back, firing dozens of rounds, as the Police Closed in and ultimately killed them both. You heard me mention the fbi looking through their computers, their cell phones here in california. The major question tonight, were they radicalized . Reporter thats right, david. The fbi is looking at connections between farook and at least two specific individuals here in the United States who may have been involved in the planning of the attack. But tonight, bottom line, david, the fbi says its still too early to call this an act of terrorism. David . All right, brian ross leading us off. Brian, thank you. Tonight, we have new and dramatic images of the moment of crisis. A nurse recording as s. W. A. T. Teams storm that office complex. She was texting her husband, another drill. Then realizing it was the real thing. Inside, the evacuation, a little boy, his hands in the air, a Police Officer telling everyone, its okay now. Abcs matt gutman is here in california tonight with what police discovered at the scene, after the couple made their escape. What they placed there. Reporter david, were also rampage unfolded. You mentioned police were there within four minutes. But in that time span, that couple managed to get in, fire off dozens of rounds and flee before police even got there. The horror quickly overtaking the holiday luncheon as farook and his wife came into the Conference Room at 11 00 a. M. , wearing tactical vests and bearing rifles. Need assist now. I have shots fired, inland regional center. We believe the suspects, when they entered, fired somewhere between 65 and 75 rounds. They sprayed the room with bullets. Reporter within four minutes, a massive Law Enforcement response. We have several down in a Conference Room. Reporter discovering an explosive device, apparently to be triggered by Remote Control. We need to slow this thing down. I need you to advise all of the units to move with caution. We did locate the one pipe bomb that was actually three that had a Remote Control cartype Remote Control device. Reporter this Dramatic Video Shows Police trying to keep people calm. An outpouring of support for the officer who said this. Try to relax. Everyone try to relax. Ill take a bullet before you do, thats for damn sure. Reporter those evacuated searched one by one. But the suspects had fled. About four hours later, a tip leading police to this house, five miles from the center, where the pair takes off again. In that black rented suv, leading police on a chase back towards the scene of the earlier rampage. Shooting at folks. Suv. Responding. Cross fire. Reporter the female suspect firing out the back at police. And then the male suspect, who was the driver, got out and fired at officers from the street, as well. Reporter all in all, firing 76 rounds. A neighbor capturing the gun when the officers came past, and he told us, run inside the house, active shooter. Reporter the suv now cornered. Finally, it was over. Right now, we have one down outside the car, one down inside the car. Reporter both suspects dead at the scene. And david, this is still very much an active investigation. Just moments ago, we saw fbi agents leaving farooks house with armloads of evidence. David . Matt gutman here in california tonight. Matt, thank you. And late today, i sat down here with one of syed farooks coworkers. They actually shared a cubicle, sat a few feet away from one another for years. Both were environmental inspectors. Patrick ba carry thought he was his friend. He was in the room yesterday for that holiday work event. Farook was sitting at the same table. Then he noticed that farook wasnt there. Patrick didnt think anything of it. But a short time later, he was in the restroom, drying his hands when bullets came bursting through the paper towel dispenser. To take a 15minute break. During that break, i excused myself and got to the restroom. When i finished up, im ready to leave and theres, like, a bomb went off. And i turned back and look at the mirror, i can see that im bloody here, here and here. And i dont know what it is. You were at the paper towel dispenser . Just pulled paper towels, im pulling the towels, it sounds like an explosion went off. Comes right through the dispenser . I get hit with a blast. I dont know what it is. I thought the dispenser was booby trapped. I announced to people, were under attack. So, the one that was beside me, i told him, get down on the floor. And we put our feet against the door to inhibit anybody from entering the restroom. So, were hearing all this gun fire take place. Were not feeling anything. And tell her i love her and that im okay, but were under attack. And so, the gentleman beside me, i asked him to call the police and he did and he got through to them and he told them we were in the restroom and there were three of us. Within minutes of us being in there, i guess four, five minutes, they came and they attempted to open the restroom door but they couldnt move the door because we had it braced closed. With your feet. Yeah. You were frozen. So, we followed their directions. They took us across the that building to another building. They asked, who is injured . One of my coworkers was outside that restroom within, from her to myself, and she took two or three rounds. And, so, we could see the injuries on her, i could feel my little bit of bleeding, some and so, we said, you know, weve got to get her to an ambulance, shes ambulatory. We sent her on her way. Reporter patrick, who is also a medic, helped many of his wounded coworkers. Today at the hospital, he saw one of them, a woman who was shot, who he helped survive. Did she thank you . Yes. She said, this is the man that rendered me aid. And that made me feel good. During all this, you know, youre frantic. Im on the floor, im trying to get some help, my phone doesnt work in the restroom. I sent out a text to my wife, and i said, gunman attacked and she didnt understand what it meant. And the moment you saw him, you got to the hospital got to the hospital. I didnt know if he was shot. I didnt know i didnt know what was going on. She didnt want to believe me when i told her it was just just kept thinking, my husband going into that bathroom saved his life. That couple telling me they here in this community and patrick telling me he lost 14 of his friends in that shooting, 14 victims. Including a father of six, now 21 wounded, including a woman telling her sister about the time she realized she was hit. Abcs Kayna Whitworth with their stories, and the image going viral. Reporter tonight, reality sinking in for the families of those killed. Everybody knew and loved him. Reporter ryan reyes partner, daniel kaufman, ran a coffee shop inside the inland regional center. The world will suffer from having one less person like him. Reporter 42 years old, one of the 14 killed in the shooting. Also killed, environmental specialist michael wetzel, a father of six. They are very overwhelmed. There are six kids that have lost their father. Reporter nicholas thalasinos, damien meins and ten many employees of the county Health Department attending a banquet when the shooting took place. 21 people also injured. Kathy hotetzs younger sister, denise, hospitalized with a bullet still lodged in her abdomen. Nobody ever expects for Something Like that to happen, you know, so close to home. Reporter denise telling her sister about the horror inside that room. The door opens, but you dont think anything of it, and then all of a sudden, gunfire starts. But then, she said, she felt a sting in her lower side of her back. And then she knew she was shot. Reporter earlier today, i spoke with the chief of emergency medicine here at loma linda hospital. She said, theyre prepared, because in her opinion, Something Like this happening was not a matter of if, it was a matter of when. David . Incredible team at that hospital. Kayna, thank you. President obama today saying, we do not know their motives, quote, its possible this was terroristrelated. Its possible this was workplacerelated. If it was terrorrelated, we also know that the fbi is tracking 900 homegrown terror so, lets bring in abcs senior justice correspondent prre thomas tonight. And pierre, the big question this evening, was this young couple on the fbis radar . Reporter david, so far, it does not appear that farook or his wife were actively being investigated by the fbi before the shooting. My sources tell me they still cant say this was terrorism, and theyre still pursuing the workplace angle, as well it could be a combination of both. But we do know that the fbi is under tremendous pressure. You mentioned those 900 terror i vest games and david, there are dozens of suspects under 24hour surveillance. Clearly this couple was not in that group, but tonight, david, the fbi is pouring over intelligence files to make sure nothing was missed. Pierre thomas with us tonight. Pierre, thank you. Reporter do you think this was terrorism in california . I think it was terrorism, yeah. I think it was terrorism. Reporter senator ted cruz saying its further proof were a nation at war. And all of us are deeply concerned that this is yet another manifestation of terrorism, radical islamic terrorism here at home. Reporter for hillary clinton, this tragedy underscores the problem of gun violence. Yesterday, tweeting, i refuse to accept this as normal. We must take action to stop gun violence now. But in New Hampshire tonight, she believes this is terror, too. Its becoming clearer that we are dealing with an act of terrorism. Something that included bombs, luckily one that didnt go off, but pipe bombs that were found lots of weapons. And just a deliberate hateful murder of all those innocent people. Reporter and david, some republicans are reserving judgment on a motive, both senator rubio and jeb bush waiting on more information to come out. David . Tom llamas with us tonight. Tom, thank you.
