Dot twitt dot tv that should touch the complete panoply of stuff don't let Facebook make you miserable. I don't know or is actually a New York Times article this Sunday today in The New York Times Seth Stephens David of it who is. A economist the author of a book called Everybody lies. Provocative name Big Data new data and what the Internet can tell us about who we really are and he wrote I thought was a very interesting. Piece. Apparently it's official now he says scholars have analyzed the data and confirmed what we already knew in our hearts social media is making us miserable. See we all kind of know right he says vaguely aware that everybody else can't possibly be as successful rich attractive relaxed intellectual and joyous as they appear on Facebook and Instagram and Snap Chat and Twitter the real world is not so neat and the problem is we know how our lives are he he mentions the old. Saying Don't compare your insides with other people's outsides and that's what we're doing aren't we in social media every So he says for instance Circus Circus which is a kind of a rundown hotel in Vegas you know and the Blasio which is the fancy one it's the one that just had the fire and the way each have the same number of people who check in you know saying to people stay there but the fancy one gets about 3 times as many check ins on Facebook right 1st Sadie's and b.m.w. User about twice as likely the owners of Mercedes and face and and be a bit about twice as likely to like their car brand on Facebook as our own owners of other kinds of cars right I'm a b.m.w. Owner. We spend invention 6 times as much of our time in life washing dishes as we do say playing golf. But we tweet twice as often about golfing nobody tweets about doing the dishes that's of obvious but what happens is if you look at social media after a while you start to think everybody else is leading lives of glamour and excitement and ours are just quiet lives of quiet desperation. Social. Social media irritable bowel syndrome and migraines each affect about 10 percent of the American population but I'm thinking you probably already know that there's a lot more migraine awareness at 20 a half times the migraine awareness that there is the i.b.s. Awareness on Facebook so what's the what's the solution. He says Use Google Now this is interesting. And I kind of like this is an antidote he says if you feel down after you go to Facebook you can quickly make yourself feel better if you go to Google and you know if you have auto complete turned on in your browser and you just type in a couple of words like for instance if you type in I always and then see what let's try that I'm going to try that I google right now type in. Always and then auto complete will tell you I always have to pee is number one I always feel tired is number 2. These are these 6 is normal not I'm always playing golf I'm always staying at The Bellagio but he said I always feel I always feel tired bloated hungry and sicker than a pretty city says this will make you feel better just do some. Some some Google auto completes rarely do you see I always on Caribbean vacations. I'm always counting my money. He's feel tired. This is good this is good this is good I am I'm going to use this from now on and finally he says as our lives increasingly move on line I propose a new self-help montor for the 21st century replace Don't compare your insides to other people's outsides with Don't compare your Google searches with other people's Facebook posts. Actually we should all start tweeting I always feel tired and depressed after effects but there's actually a acronym you know there's yellow You Only Live Once that's what you put on your acronym when you're you know for jumping out of an airplane or for water skiing or doing something crazy and fancy but there's also foam Oh which is actually more my life fear of missing out f o m o m I tell you browse Instagram and it's foam Oh City. Why am I not water skiing with Richard Branson on his private island why not me. Foam Oh. Somebody somebody did I always and has it's come up with I always find the fish Ok Ok your your mileage may vary because remember autocomplete is based on something what you search for a New York who you are if you want to find out what the real world sees you can do it incognito tab or private browsing tab in your browser and then type by always and you'll see. Makes me feel better to know everybody else feels terrible what. You see that's what we really want that's what we miss everybody always feels tired . If you are a a Macintosh user you should be where I've recommended many times a program called handbrake it's a really useful tool for converting video from it's called Check the whole transcoding from one format to another recommended all the time we use it to rip D.V.D.'s things like that somehow I don't know how one of the handbrake mirrors that's a site. You know when you download a very popular program often you'll visit a mirror that has a site that duplicates that the main site to spread the download around one of the mirrors had a malware on on it masquerading as handbrake or Oh dear oh dear So if you downloaded handbrake on a Mac. Between May 2nd and May 6th inclusive May 2nd through yesterday May 6th you'll have a 5050 chance because there's 2 sites one in America you know the main site the mirror that you downloaded the Trojan horse. And we thought Macs were safe. Here's here's what handbrake says on their site there's a rack and I have to put this in the show notes because it's kind of complicated but you need to open up the terminal and there are some commands if you see a process called activity agent in the o s 10 activity monitor you are affected infected really activity underscore agent there are some terminal commands and you must change all the passwords that live in your o.-s. 10 key chain or your browser password stores because those have been corrupt and Apple is updating a bad behind the scenes thing they have called x. Protect that will be pushing out mackintoshes today that should find this and remove it. But just a little boy if you down a hand brake check this out Leo Laporte the tech on Fox News reading. Like me I have actually never heard that song and I never want to hear it oh you yeah you and I I so I knew about it because my kids watched it was very popular in their early ninety's for p.b.s. For kids so you and I missed it you're just you were probably just you know 15 or a little too old to watch that and luckily child and you didn't have to be you missed the whole Barney thing and everything Oh man there's all kinds of things oh man lad so you have been like a baker you come in early early early in the wee hours of the morning to sprinkle flour on the phones and get the ovens heated up so that we can have by. I buy early morning we can have some lovely fresh baked callers and I take it we have some Today I reckon that's legally and time to May sit down on anything else hungry now hungry I mean myself I'm. Class. Oh Parker House Rules is. A killer and what can I talk to quick get me out of this loop that reading your words that he Claire that's a general George in Laguna Niguel has a great idea if it's hasn't been invented already I all I get Thank you Heather Hello George you know report the tech I am well thank you for taking my call Thank you for working I'm working with 2 academic medical institutions in West Los Angeles and they want to develop an electronic bulletin board where both of them post updates on the work that they're doing in a specific disease state and their goal is to have both. Organizations begin to communicate better with each other but also to get more people who are interested in this disease state looking out this electronic bulletin board and say hey I may have something to add to that I love that you use the phrase electronic bulletin board because that harkens back to the Carmen Sandiego era early ninety's before the Internet was popular we had electronic We called m b b S's b.b.s. Or bulletin board systems to remember that you dial in on your modem. I ran one in the in the eighty's actually for a long time a lot of people got started in you know technology and communicate telecommunications with bulletin board system nowadays I would just say make a website I mean you want to you want a couple of things you want a place people the public can go to see this information right if you want to open to the public. No we just want it open between the 2 academic institutions and the health care professionals and I see Ok so you don't but you do want so you'll have some sort of authentication required for people to get in to validate that they are a health care professional not necessarily it's not going to be meant to be exclusive to Cessnock to target those 2 so they can begin to communicate with each other. You know website can totally do this there are you know any decent website software can have multiple authors so you can assign authorship privileges to the researchers that you want to contribute websites also support comments and you can have commenting privileges you can say you can't comment unless you've been approved sounds like that's the kind of thing you'd like to do you can even make it not open to the public if you want password protected. So that I mean that's basically websites have completely superceded bulletin board systems because they do exactly the same thing in a in a much easier way. Only only drawback is what you have said before and that is you have to have somebody in charge to monitor that website and I don't think we'd be able to get that what well that's why I was hoping more like a cork board some a could just sort of post it on something and say I'm doing this area of research now you're going to need somebody at least in charge to the degree that somebody decides who has permission to post otherwise you're in trouble. Ok yeah so somebody's right somebody's got to say Ok you you you and you you can post what I would do is I would I would pick the lead researchers and say By the way your administrators you can add people if you want people to comment in post or have access to it so their number ways to do this Dr Mom says she runs one for her medical society and they use Linked In to do this Linked In is a social network business social network for professionals and you can Linked In will help because everybody's profiling tin shows their affiliation so you could say people affiliated with these hospitals are allowed or people in this department are allowed that kind of thing that would simplify it and that's a that's a really good suggestion because I'm on Li and it's wonderful So that just might be it because you can go in and post what you're doing and have somebody comment on that exactly I respond that's great you can you can make a Linked In special space on Linked In That's a group basically for this particular purpose. Then that is a good place to start you've got to be aware and she by the way she says you can make it a closed group you've got to be aware of HIPAA of course if you're pushing posting any patient records confidential records and. I don't know exactly how that would work on Linked In but we were going to be doing anything like that actually we're just trying to get our people to be consciously aware of what's going on at one institution and the other so we can get more people that have interest in this. Disease state to find out about what work is being dishonest perfect length and that's a great idea of all linked in a Microsoft company Thanks thanks for the call Microsoft spent a huge amount of money to acquire Linked In fact a lot of people were a little puzzled when Microsoft bought Linked In. Because they thought. Why would Microsoft want this but now you could kind of see the value of a cancer and of course what you really get is the data about who knows whom who's doing what Dr mom tells me Linked In is not HIPAA compliant so you got to be aware of that but it sounds like that's that's the perfect solution from one doctor to another there are B.B.'s is apparently still around not the kind that you dial in with your dial up modem but there are forums and there and there's a lot of forms we always are talking about a form called x t a developer's 68 s developers dot com That is a form for Android users and it's really a great place because each. Android handset every model has its own little section where people talk about it within the sections are you know different topics around that handset so forums are kind of have taken the place of the old b.b.s. As bulletin board systems those are a lot of fun I ran a mac b.b.s. In the early days of the Macintosh thinking any for any 5 called mac you enter San Francisco and it was a big deal because I had not one but 2 phone. To no wait Leo Laporte the tekka to. Tell him. Rather like around the world he wasn't here yesterday cause he was in Hungary until Alabama for the teabags Congress Senate travel conference travel bloggers exchange . You know the owner who runs it recovered Oh yes I do he used to run the blogger con. Cast Expo blog world and was world yeah yeah yeah recount Yeah so he does and they've had $1000.00 of them wow they do all over the world they just like nonstop next next year's going to be in Zimbabwe is it open to the public or is it just travel writers and people like you bloggers and p.r. Fans I mean people like you know there's a lot of people who are just starting out they want to you know they want to be able to travel the world they want to learn how so they go and they don't they don't charge a lot for bloggers I think it's under $100.00 for that for the weekend I got a question for you from a viewer actually from Dr Mom seems like she's the only person actually listens and interacts with the show I know but it's not she said she was flying she flew from Indiana to New York yesterday on Southwest you know after boarding we were told a new regulation says all laptops have to stay in the overhead bin or under your seat for the duration of the flight what is not heard that I knew yesterday you can see that you were on Delta yesterday were I was an American there today and you didn't experience that no it's a 1st I heard of it but. I'll have to get on my horn start find out what that's all about that would be you know that's what we're talking about well sort of we're talking about the travel ban for the for the Middle Eastern airlines they were they said you had to check any electronics bigger than your phone in your check your carry your a check on luggage but they said you can carry it on but you just can't use it and I guess I think it could be you just have a crappy captain on that on that flight but they say it's also what. They like to joke around but oh maybe they think they were teasing I don't they will I doubt it but that doesn't sound like something they would joke about yeah that would make some very angry a lot of people expect to work on flights I mean that's what I do the whole flight yeah I work a tie pass the time these flights used to be torture for me now I'm like oh my God we're about to land I got to hurry up. So it would really be a bummer if that does take an effect and I was worried about that when say now stood for. You know the Middle Eastern and North Africa but and now they're talking about maybe Europe but I haven't heard about this one Well look people I on it but meanwhile I know you've been you've been working hard to get us some some stuff yes I have so. I just did a post on how to find the cheapest cruises because I was at a conference a few weeks ago at York and I met with the c.e.o. Of cruise compete which is like a really cool website a great way to find deals so he told me some good information I'll tell you about his website too so he says the best time to buy cruises are either 12 to 18 months in advance or 6 to 7 weeks before the sailing because that's just after final payments are due and a lot of people cancel you know back exactly as I said that's just 6 to 7 weeks before sailing if you can't book a year in advance 12 or 18 months but still cruise compete is a free anonymous service that lets consumers compare multiple custom Cruise offers from competing travel agents so you know whenever you want to book a cruise it's always best to go through a travel agent you can see I mean why is that and I've been doing it because of your recommendation but why be just they have deals they can get you upgraded they know what's going on and they and because if you just book on line you're not going to find the best deal and also special novice cruises you don't want to do that but what I like about these guys you just pick the cruise you want they send it out to all these different travel agents and they they bid on you and they don't know who you are but if you like what they have you can then contact them oh so this site is kind of like requesting a quote How do you know if it doesn't but he says that I state that I bet the cruise but I don't understand how can a travel agent get a better one travel agent get a better deal in another they because if they're sending more business to one cruise they never I don't they get a better deal so you can just keep on. And that I mean it's a way to fight. Other travel deals too so let's say if you want to go to Asia or Japan so a lot of people would say wouldn't go down to the you know the Japan Japanese section of town if you live in a big city and go to one of those travel agents because they're sitting so much business you can usually find a better deal or go down to China town if you're going to China and things like that you can even narrow it down by cruises because one of the concerns I have an honest crew search is that you did yeah yes some cruises are very inexpensive but you know you get what you pay for like that and you choose where you want what happened with a lot of rocks in Italy I don't date Ok yeah so nice What's a cruise to nowhere because I'm searching for that right now so that. You want to do a cruise to nowhere what is it so let's say fuel from New York and you go out for a couple days and you come back it's just you just on the boat floating around Exactly so that's what I've done to many of those because they do a lot of media previews so they invite sure you know you can air travel agencies them around shore or you just go out for their 2 or 3 nights and cruise to nowhere fun I love my travel agent I'm never giving her up but what's her name again I'm not going to say it because I don't want to be asked to know what's funny is I just got an email today from someone asked me for my business class travel agent and my guy told me not to give his name out anymore because he's got too much business or too much but I'll. Travel store and I asked Jane if she if she if she wants me to do any more referrals because I've mentioned her name a few times and I imagine you know at some point you just have more business than you can handle correct we've got time for a nap yes please Ok so 2 weeks ago I mentioned an app about how you can book hotels by the hour. But now they have when you can book hotels by the minute and I know you get your head at the gutter and it's hard to wrap it but I think that's. What all you want to tell so like you can take a half hour nap. Exactly that's what they're going after the no business traveler is something. Well you don't take a given exam you can take a red eye a lot of times I'm going to do business in New York I'm going to take a red I arrive at 6 in the morning I had 10 o'clock meeting what am I going to do if I could go down to the Ritz Carlton take an hour nap I feel better Yeah so this app is called recharge retreat in Iowa City enjoy it Ok and so they go after 54 and 5 star hotels and they started in terms of scope so they had the Taj Captain palace and the w. 7 disco the Westin all these s.f.o. . And then now they just a couple weeks ago or last week they announced they're moving into New York City and they have 16 hotels there including the pier which is really nice is. The w. There as well one hotel Central Park but anyway so they charge between Let me get exact be supposed to between $0.83 a minute and $2.00 So if you want to have a 20 minute power nap it's going to be $57.00 to $12840.00 after 20. I don't know you. Well they'll charge it they'll keep charging the charge what you check clock which you can check out and you don't check out the maid goes into the room then you get charged that could be expensive for sure a 60 minute news and shower whatever going to do is $85.00 to 270 dollars 207 dollars so good business travelers who have you know big spend expense accounts this is nothing to them and they just don't they don't want to expense a whole night which is you know could be a $1000.00 and they're all going to take a shower or whatever they're going to do but. You know when you hear hotel but a minute you're like they have one of my favorite San Francisco hotels I'm here to stand for court I love the Stafford court and yes very nice I think it's a very it's very interesting you know. Well it tells you know they've got those rooms any any time a room is vacant right as is they probably are most of the day. You know that they're not making any money so I think you buy that a good idea yes so you're charged a $250.00 overstay fee if the you're still in the room well the way. To make sure you're out so that they're going out to these hotels at let's say it's a 250 room property Yeah well they could sell out they could they could sell 10275 rooms doing this way and this way they don't have a lot of people sleeping in Hawaii which I think is probably more at the airport airports what you asleep at the airport at 8 some airports are so hostile to anybody getting comfortable Johnny Jet you'll find him a jolly Jet dot com That's where his cruise article is also his travel newsletters are free to subscribe to an often have mazing. Oh well you could say a lot of things about me and people have they say a lot of time out of control I'm crazy I'm losing my mind I've sold out all my They take. 8888 ask me all the phone number Julie in Little Rock California Is there a little rock in California yes story Little Rock it one word. And light on the city let you know what Highway 138 you go through here on their way to Vegas I know exactly yeah I've probably been through it Lloyd I'm like What can I do for you Well well Ok I have a galaxy s 3 you know else has a galaxy s 3 we think President Trump That's the phony troops with. Oh dear Ok. I'm not you know you're in good company oh Ok there we go Yeah Ok I need to hold out I apparently so easy for you can afford any phone but you know what you know what that was a great phone I completely understand I mean we're now at the Galaxy s 8 so that's 5 galaxies ago but but that was a good one I remember the s 3 s 4 and s 5 I thought were a little disappointing I like the s 67 with. The sh the new one I like it a lot. What's going on with your at the wate The one problem with having that old of a phone is you can't get it past Android Kit Kat Android 4 and that means you're missing out on some new features and some security protections. I. I don't understand any of that but Ok Well yeah. On the floor he days ago I was certain I stopped receiving my e-mail on my phone that's too bad and I don't know that there is anything that can be done about that. You're using the builtin e-mail app the Samsung e-mail am. I would think so you know and who is your email provider is it your Internet service provider or Google were what is your e-mail live oh. You mean Linux at home yeah I have. But it spectrum so it's your Internet Service Provider spectrum cable Yes Ok so you know and you've been getting mail even after I presume that you became spectrum after Time Warner sold you and yet you went through that tradition just fine I was yes I think Time Warner use Yahoo let me see who spectrum uses for their e-mail lot of big guy S.P.'s don't do their own email they. They use somebody you know what I have i.e. Hotmail Ok There you go they use Hotmail Well that might explain it. Hotmail is a Microsoft service and they've replaced it with Outlook mail and I'm wondering if the settings that worked so long for you might have finally worn off you know they stopped maybe stopped using those settings so. When you 1st set up your phone you may not even remember this it was so long ago you put in the settings for your e-mail. Probably all you have to did you had to do was was say I have Hotmail and logging in and then that would all be handled I would do that again so Hotmail does not you know stores your mail that's the good news you don't have to worry about if you if you mess it up on the phone you're not getting e-mail it's still going to Hotmail In fact you could on your desktop computer log into hotmail and see your mail there have you done that oh yeah yeah that's still working right now you could I I'm on the road all the time and you know you need your phone I yes of course so what I would do is go into the settings on the phone and delete that account the hotmail account and recreate it and the reason I tell you that you don't have to worry about losing mail that it's you know it's stored on Hotmail is in case you're worried well if I deleted I'm going to leave everything on my phone you will not I mean you will but it will come Hi Pak because it's still Story Yeah so why don't you try it. So you're going to getting Yeah it's in the I don't remember where they put it in in the old versions of Android but it will be in probably in accounts. Section of settings there is currently anyway an account setting and when you look at accounts you'll see a list of all the accounts and one of them will be a Hotmail account or might it might be a Microsoft account but it probably would be a Hotmail account and just you could just click on it and delete it you know just get rid of it Ok so I had Google and have Microsoft Change Act Yeah well it is at account so I don't even know you only have 2 accounts Google and Microsoft Microsoft is the one you need to delete was this is this a corporate Exchange account or is this just your this is just your spectrum account. Just like Ok And you know your Hotmail log in right yes Ok that's the one thing I would I should have warned you don't do this if you don't know you're so select the exchange and then there's a little menu up in the corner with 3 dots you click on that and remove account will be one of the choices and you can just remove that account you can also actually if you if you want to dig deeper and see if there's something going on tap the exchange entry and just make sure that it's selected that mail will be sinked and all of that because maybe that that's what it was when I when I link you back I want to change Ok my e-mail address so that my hotmail and it was. Turned off oh it's turned off well there you go turn it on again I don't even know what that is get sick you think is get in the mail now it might be like a circuit breaker that if you turn it on it and then you check and it goes off again because something's wrong there in that case you could just delete it right or but it doesn't sound like you have to just turn sync back on that's getting the mail so that just so you for your deeper understanding the way this works is exchange is a mail server and it has all your mail it never it doesn't delete a mail it just sits there on the server and the sync means that device you get you have a view of that mail on your phone and it synchronizing so that your view matches on the phone what's on the server and if it hasn't been doing that then you look like you don't have any new mail because it hasn't sent. To turn it back on Ok I don't know why it went out that yeah well I don't know either and that's one concern is that maybe went off because settings changed or whatever in which case you might have to start over but try turning it on see if it fixes it. Well yeah and if it doesn't if it doesn't. It doesn't stay on then I would say delete the account and start over. All right.
