Now, right now you can see employees at that roadblock there, where brighton boulevard is shut down in both directions from 56th to 60th avenues. The employees are with suncor security as we mentioned regarding roadblock and they say they are going to soon that facility after it was shut down since just after noon today. Thick yellow and black smoke could be seen from across the city after a sudden power failure at Suncor Energy in commerce city. At first it looks like there was flames coming out with the smoke. It was just really, really dark orange coming out. Reporter this picture shows a plume of smoke, the shot of out of one stack, a suncor spokesperson told us the excel power power failure cost and operational upset leading to abnormal emissions into one of the units. The smoke was created by what they call a catalyst dust, a clay substance with oil on it. Refinery workers shut down the facility stopped work and went to designated safe areas on site. We talked to witnesses who heard a loud sound and saw flames. As i was going by i look up and the thing ignited. I get the heck out of the way and when i tried to come back they had roads closed. The study did say that. It also says there would be little to no job lost. The Womens College at du partnered on the study with the Womens Foundation of colorado which funds many of the groups pushing the amendment. A different study funded by commonsense policy round table the amendment would cost the economy nearly 4 billion and 90,000 jobs. There are many conflicting studies on the minimum wage. In terms of reallife scenarios, supporters note when colorado raised the minimum wage in 2006 it added jobs. Opponents note it was the first increase in eight years. Since then the minimum wage has gone up and will continue to be adjusted every year based on averaged 0. 15 a year. The escalation in home rental costs has far outpaced that. The governor and Business Owners across colorado indoors amendment 70. Thats true but more Business Leaders oppose the amendment. The Restaurant Association released a survey of its members finding 90 would raise prices and 72 cut jobs if the measure passes. Many not all of those that support it like the one in this ad are located in the denver minimum wage. Because the cost of living is higher. This is the biggest criticism of amendment 70. It treats rural and urban colorado the same. The Pew Research Center found the costofliving disparity between rural and urban parts of the state is among the highest in the country. A bill in the Legislature Last session would have allowed cities to set their own minimum wages. But the Restaurant Association opposed it. Arguing it would much of a patchwork. Opponents now point to new york and oregon as models. Both said regional rates when they raise the minimum wage. This brings us to their add. Larger businesses in wealthier areas could probably weather it but Small Businesses in rural parts of the state, familyowned businesses, they would be devastated. Small businesses would have no choice but to cut jobs. Thats true. Again based on some studies. Others dispute this but given between urban and rural colorado, its hard to imagine Small Businesses in Grand Junction for example wont be disproportionately impacted by a 44 increase in the minimum wage than in boulder. Bottom line, 300 a week. The takehome pay for a full time minimum wage worker in colorado, is not a living wage. In any part of the state. But amendment 70s one size fits all approach to raising the wage will undoubtedly hurt rural areas harder than urban areas and as such, could hurt some of the very people this measure is meant to help.
